Internet
Internet :: Name Service (DNS)
Software Development :: Libraries
About: Avahi is a framework for Multicast DNS Service Discovery
(mDNS/DNS-SD a.k.a. Zeroconf) on Linux. It allows programs to publish and
discover services running on a local network with no specific
configuration. For example, you can plug into a network and instantly find
printers to print to, files to look at, and people to talk to.
Changes: Compatibility with newer D-Bus releases (0.9x) was added.
Compatibility with DBUS builds with --disable-checks was added. An error
was fixed in the DBUS event loop wrapping which caused the avahi client
libraries to dispatch some events too late when used with D-BUS 0.62 and
newer. a minor memory leak in the DBUS code of avahi-daemon was fixed.
Some GLIB adapter cleanups were done in avahi-glib. A segfault in
avahi-dnsconfd when passing an invalid command line option was fixed.
Portability patches for Solaris were applied to avahi-test. In
avahi-browse, STDOUT is flushed after each line, making it useful in shell
scripts. The service type database was updated.

Text Processing :: Indexing
About: DataparkSearch is a Web search engine tool. It features support for
http, https, ftp, nntp, and news URLs, htdb virtual URL support for
indexing SQL databases, text/html, text/xml, text/plain, audio/mpeg (MP3),
and image/gif mime types built-in support, external parsers support for
other document types, the ability to index multilangual sites using
content negotiation, searching of all of the word forms using ispell
affixes and dictionaries, stopwords and synonyms lists, boolean query
language support, results sorting by relevancy, popularity rank, last
modified time, and importance (a multiplication of the relevancy and
popularity ranks), support for various character sets, and phrases
segmenting for the Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Thai languages. It has
accent-insensitive search, mod_dpsearch for Apache, and support for
internationalized domain names.
Changes: A bug in cache database optimization has been fixed. The
CharsToEscape command has beed added. The Neo PopRank has been modified.
Processing of LocalCharset has been fixed for the non-multithread version.
An erroneous warning of "AddURL: URL not found" has been fixed. A new
command, "MarkForIndex yes/no", has been added. mod_dpsearch can now be
built without SQL-server support for the cache mode only version. The

[005] - DictEm 0.81
by Aleksey Cheusov (http://freshmeat.net/users/vle/)
Sat, Jul 22nd 2006 13:26
About: DictEm is an extremely customizable DICT client for (X)Emacs. It
implements all functions of the client part of the DICT protocol
(RFC-2229). Unlike dictionary.el, it widely uses autocompletion that is
used for selecting a dictionary and search strategy. It provides several
hooks that may be used for buffer postprocessing. Built-in hyperlinking
and a highlighting mechanism are based on this ability. It supports the
mechanism of virtual dictionaries that can be used for grouping
dictionaries from different DICT servers into the client-side virtual
dictionary.
Changes: The dictem-server variable can be equal to nil, in which case the
"dict" command line tool will be called without the -h option, meaning that
the default list of servers specified in .dictrc (or dict.conf) will be
used. dict:///dictionary_name (in dictem-user-databases-alist) also means
that the default server list will be used. The dictem-server variable now
defaults to nil. dictem-strategy-alist and dictem-database-alist also
default to nil.

by Joe Allen (http://freshmeat.net/users/jhallen/)
Sat, Jul 22nd 2006 13:46
About: JOE (Joe's own editor) has the feel of most IBM PC text editors:
The key-sequences are reminiscent of WordStar and Turbo-C. JOE is much
more powerful than those editors, however. JOE has all of the features a
UNIX user should expect: full use of termcap/terminfo, excellent screen
update optimizations, simple installation, and all of the UNIX-integration
features of VI.
Changes: This release includes fixes for some core dump bugs and also a
few feature enhancements. The bugs include core dumps when traversing
menus and when using the multi-file search and replace command. Also fixed
is a bug where the compile command (ESC c) and the exit command in jmacs
(^XC) would sometime core dump. Enhancements include some
internationalization improvements, syntax highlighters for M4 and joerc
files, and the ability to edit sections of files larger than 4GB. This, in
combination with the hex-dump display mode, allow JOE to be used as a disk
editor for large hard drives.

About: LON-CAPA (The LearningOnline Network with CAPA) is a learning
content and course management system. It offers an underlying shared
content pool from which instructors across departmental and institutional
boundaries can assemble granular learning content for their courses. It
has strong assessment capabilities, both formative (homework and in-class
using wireless PDAs) and summative (online and bubblesheet exams), with a
one-source multiple-target strategy for the content. It offers students
portfolio space in which they can stage materials for submission to
projects, and provides a number of tools for synchronous and asynchronous
student-student and student-faculty communication. LON-CAPA scales well
with number of students, as load-balancing is possible across the whole
network of servers at participating institutions.
Changes: This release candidate makes new collaborative group
functionality available, which allows groups of students to share

Internet :: Proxy Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers
System :: Networking :: Firewalls
About: NatACL is a firewall group policy controller for intranets and the
Internet. It is made of 3 main programs: a DHCP server, a Web
authenticator (the old NatACL functionality), and a statistic collector.
It forces users to use a DHCP client. Group policies can be based on MAC
address. ACLs may be created to control which group may see other groups.
Users can be forced to authenticate over the Web. Internet access can be
restricted by using DNAT/SNAT. Different networks (subnets) can be placed
on the same logical network.
Changes: DHCP client expiration was added, so five minutes of inactivity
will remove the FORWARD IPTABLES rules. Group-to-group policies can be
implemented to manage ACLs that restrict or allow communications between
groups (subnets). EXEC options are now executed with a minimum of five
minutes (even if the DHCP client requests an IP address at 15/15s). A
little HOWTO in English has been written.

[030] - Solar Imperium 1.6.4
by Yanick Bourbeau (http://freshmeat.net/users/mrgibson/)
Sat, Jul 22nd 2006 13:55
Games/Entertainment
Games/Entertainment :: Turn Based Strategy
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
About: Solar Imperium is a Solar Realms Elite clone. In it, you rule a
solar empire. The goal is to become and remain the most powerful empire.
You can gain strength by buying forces, and you can gain size by
colonizing planets. You start with some planets, and a little bit of
money. You are required to feed your people and army, and to pay to
maintain your planets and army. If you fail to do these things, disastrous
results may occur. You are given several turns of protection, during which
you cannot attack or be attacked, and cannot perform covert operations.
This provides a way for smaller empires to build up their defenses and
planets before they enter the real world.
Changes: Covert ops logic was added. CSS was integrated. Handling of
pollution/taxes was improved. Pirates now attack protected empires a
little bit less. A random event that terraforms a random number of planets
was added. Gov. planets reduce the base planets' maintenance cost. If you
buy a lot of planets in bulk, the production level will be adjusted to get
a more gradual increase in resources over turns.

[031] - Spammer 0.3.3a (Development)
by Nils Durner (http://freshmeat.net/users/ndurner/)
Sat, Jul 22nd 2006 13:41
Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Filters
About: Spammer is an anti-spam mail filter for Sendmail and Postfix. It
uses libmilter to communicate with the MTA. Spammer checks client IP
addresses as well as all IP addresses in the "Received: " headers against
a DNSBL database.
Changes: Termination of long strings was added (this was probably never a
problem, since those strings are configurable). The main focus of this
release is the updated documentation. This is the first release verified
to work with Postfix.

[033] - Sunifdef 2.1.2 (Stable)
by Mike Kinghan (http://freshmeat.net/users/imkinghan/)
Sat, Jul 22nd 2006 13:49
Software Development
Software Development :: Build Tools
About: Sunifdef is a command line tool for simplifying the preprocessor
conditionals in C/C++ source code (#if and related directives) based on
the the user's stipulation of the preprocessor macros that shall be
defined or undefined. It is a more powerful successor to the FreeBSD
'unifdef' tool. Sunifdef is most useful to developers of constantly
evolving products with large code bases, where preprocessor conditionals
are used to configure the feature sets, APIs or implementations of
different releases. In these environments, the code base steadily
accumulates #ifdef-pollution as transient configuration options become
obselete. Sunifdef can largely automate the recurrent task of purging
redundant #if-logic from the code.
Changes: Two errors when compiling to the C89 standard were fixed, as were
warnings provoked by "warn_unused_result" declarations and by building to
64-bit.

[034] - SyncEvolution 0.3
by Patrick Ohly (http://freshmeat.net/users/pohly/)
Sat, Jul 22nd 2006 23:03
Database
Desktop Environment :: Gnome
Office/Business :: Scheduling
About: SyncEvolution synchronizes Evolution's contact, calendar, and task
items with SyncML servers and thus with other SyncML capable devices. The
items are exchanged in the vCard 2.1 or 3.0 format and iCalender 2.0
format via the open source Funambol C++ client API library, which should
make SyncEvolution compatible with the majority of SyncML servers. Full,
one-way, and incremental synchronization of items are supported.
Changes: This is the first release with full support for synchronizing of
Evolution's contacts, calendars, and task lists. It was extensively tested
with ScheduleWorld (sync.scheduleworld.com). This Web based service is easy
to use and a lot of effort went into ensuring that it works well together
with SyncEvolution and Evolution's PIM data.

[036] - textbender 0.1.0
by Michael Allan (http://freshmeat.net/users/mcallan/)
Sat, Jul 22nd 2006 23:20
Artistic Software
Communications
Text Processing
About: Textbender is a distributed system of collaborative writing, with a
basis in genetic theory. As a distributed system, it differs from the
typical centralized approach (e.g. of a Wiki) where writers push
contributions to a single, central copy of the text. By contrast,
textbender has no central copy; instead, each writer has a separate copy
of the text, and selectively pulls contributions from other writers. As a
consequence, there are multiple variations of the text. Collectively, the
text has spatial diversity.
Changes: This is textbender's first alpha release. It marks a shift upward
in development, from infrastructure to concerns of usablity. A new
component was introduced as an integration wrapper around the Jaxe XML
editor. It attaches a set of genetic tools, allowing the editor to
function as a centerpiece in the Recombinant Desktop (whose users now have
a choice between Jaxe and Emacs); and also in the Recombinant Web, where
Jaxe is now the reference editor for Web-launch.

[037] - tntdb 0.6.3
by Tommi Mäkitalo (http://freshmeat.net/users/tmaek/)
Sat, Jul 22nd 2006 13:34
Database :: API
Software Development :: Libraries
About: Tntdb is a c++-class-library for database access. It implements a
database-independent layer, which loads the actual driver dynamically when
a connection is made. The classes use automatic resource management with
reference counts. Resources are freed when the classes go out of scope.
Error handling is done with exceptions (derived from std::exception).
There are STL-like iterators for result sets and rows, and also the cursor
is an STL-like iterator. It is written in standard C++ with Linux. Drivers
for PostgreSQL, sqlite3, and MySQL are available.
Changes: The license was changed to allow tntdb to be linked with OpenSSL,
because PostgreSQL is linked with OpenSSL. The sqlite3-driver got some
minor fixes.

Software Development :: Debuggers
About: Ultimate++ is a cross-platform C++ rapid application development
suite. It includes set of libraries (for things like GUI and SQL) and an
integrated development environment. Rapid development is achieved by smart
and aggressive use of C++ rather than through fancy code generators. In
this respect, U++ competes with popular scripting languages while
preserving C/C++ runtime characteristics. Its integrated development
environment, TheIDE, introduces modular conception to C++ programming, and
can be used to develop non-U++ applications.

Sat, Jul 22nd 2006 22:59
System :: Networking
About: UMIT is an nmap frontend. It is meant to be an nmap frontend that
is really useful for advanced users and easy to used for newbies. With
UMIT, a network admin can create scan profiles for faster and easier
network scanning and can even compare scan results to see any changes
easily. A regular user will also be able to construct powerful scans with
UMIT command creator wizards.
Changes: A services view allows you to select one or more services and
discover which hosts are serving them. Directories and Umit's database can
be searched for previously saved results. Colored nmap output can be shown,
with a preferences window that allows the user to select the colors. A new
parser is used, and is about six times faster and able to manipulate huge
XML output. Some save/load/close scan bugs were fixed. Umit doesn't no
longer shows a terminal window while running a scan in Windows.
