Internet :: WWW/HTTP
About: @Mail is a fully-featured WebMail server, allowing users to send
and receive email via a Web browser or WAP device. It has full support for
IMAP/POP3 mailboxes, and an optional email-server mode that uses Exim as
the MTA. Features include a scheduler, MySQL backend support, spell-check,
addressbook, user preferences, multiple accounts, Spamassassin support,
migration scripts from other mail servers, a customizable interface, an
attractive DHTML interface, an optional group Calendar/Addressbook, an
Outlook 2000/2003 plugin to sync Contacts/Tasks/Calendar data between a
desktop client and Webmail.
Changes: This release includes an improved HTML editor, IMAP functions
when using UW-IMAP as the backend server, improved message parsing, and
improved documentation. Internet Explorer and Firefox browser support has
been improved in the Simple, Simple AJAX, and Advanced Interfaces. UTF-8
is now set as the default message encoding for outgoing emails, which
solves encoding issues if users are sending messages in
non-Western-European character sets such as Thai, Arabic, and Traditional
Chinese.

About: Allegro is a multi-platform game library for C/C++ developers that
provides many functions for graphics, sounds, player input (keyboard,
mouse, and joystick), and timers. It also provides fixed and floating
point mathematical functions, 3D functions, file management functions,
compressed datafile, and a GUI.
Changes: This is the first version of the unstable branch after 4.2.0.
Most things won't work as expected in 4.2.0, and unfortunately there's no
documentation. It is useful only for very impatient users who want to get
an idea of the new API.

About: aria2 is a utility for downloading files. It has completely new
design concept from its predecessor, Aria, and is written from scratch.
aria2 has a segmented downloading engine in its core. It can download one
file from multiple URLs or multiple connections from one URL. This results
in very high speed downloading, much faster than ordinary browsers. This
engine in was implemented in a single-thread model. The architecture is
clean and easy to extend. aria2 currently supports HTTP, FTP, and
BitTorrent. It also supports Metalink version 3.0.
Changes: This release adds Metalink3.0 backward compatible link support, a
BitTorrent download in Metalink, a lowest speed limit command line option,

About: The aim of auch is to visualize harmonics in musical recordings and
the effect of analog/digital filters on the spectrum. There are plenty of
tools that visualize the spectrum. The difference here is that one or two
octaves can be focused on, so that notes, chords, and harmonics become
clear. Another feature is that this tool is aimed comparing audio out (eg.
a .wav file) with audio in. This way, external filters added between the
audio output and input of your sound card can be studied.

Tue, Aug 8th 2006 06:50
Internet
About: Bitgate Server Software Environment aims to build a multi-protocol
environment in which server protocol handlers can be eventually loaded and
unloaded on the fly using a center console or controller Web page. It aims
to have 99.9% uptime, and have high-availability (Java 6) compliance. It
is written in Java 5, and relies completely on Java's I/O functionality to
provide non-blocking support for both SSL and non-SSL sockets
(transparently). All configuration is done via XML files, as this is
easier to maintain. It includes a minimal demonstration HTTP server.
Changes: Support code for handling automatic closing of input and output
files instead of having to watch over them on a constant basis was added.
Server documentation was updated. Extra support classes were added for
later functionality. This release tests functionality with the server and
adds more test support code.

Scientific/Engineering :: Geographical
About: Happy Camel is intended to combine your digital camera with your
GPS device. You feed it a list of digital photos and a tracklog, and it
figures out where these images were taken, embeds this position in the
EXIF-data, and creates a Google Earth file with the photos at the right
positions along the tracklog.
Changes: This release adds some more features for the output of the Google
Earth file, like specifying the size of the photos and the width and color
of the track. Furthermore, it uses the description from the EXIF data for
labeling the photos in the KMZ file if it is present. Internally, there
also several changes, including a more logical class structure. This
release can handle very large, precise, tracklogs (and simplify them for
display). The option to load multiple tracklog formats has been removed,
and with it the dependency on GPSBabel.

About: libferris is a virtual filesystem that exposes hierarchical data of
all kinds through a common C++ interface. Access to data is performed using
C++ IOStreams and Extended Attributes (EA) can be attached to each file or
directory to present metadata. Ferris uses a plugin API to read various
data sources and expose them as filesystems and to generate interesting
EA. Current implementations include native (kernel disk IO with fam), XML
(mount an XML file as a filesystem), DB4, xmldb, Evolution, Firefox,
Emacs, LDAP, HTTP, FTP, eet, sockets, RDF/XML, RDF/bdb, and mbox. EA
generators include image, audio, and animation decoders.
Changes: Improvements were made to ferris-first-time-user. The ClipAPI now

Education :: Computer Aided Instruction (CAI)
Education :: Testing
About: LON-CAPA (The LearningOnline Network with CAPA) is a learning
content and course management system. It offers an underlying shared
content pool from which instructors across departmental and institutional
boundaries can assemble granular learning content for their courses. It
has strong assessment capabilities, both formative (homework and in-class
using wireless PDAs) and summative (online and bubblesheet exams), with a
one-source multiple-target strategy for the content. It offers students
portfolio space in which they can stage materials for submission to
projects, and provides a number of tools for synchronous and asynchronous
student-student and student-faculty communication. LON-CAPA scales well
with number of students, as load-balancing is possible across the whole
network of servers at participating institutions.
Changes: This release candidate fixes the following issues: some portfolio
files submitted for grading were not accessible to the grader; the JME

About: Open Blue Lab is a rapid application development framework for
building portal applications based on Web 2.0. It is currently being used
to develop a full Web ERP from scratch. Portal layout may be configured
through the UI, and Ajax and HTML-based forms are automatically built from
XML widget definitions, which may be generated on the fly from a UML model
that describes your information system. Widgets are dynamically populated,
making them data-aware automatically at run time with no need to code any
database interaction. This framework allows you to focus on Information
System design, with forms and portal architecture being generated
automatically.
Changes: You can now manage employee and services from Project Management.
A form for managing messages and resouces was added. Some bugs were fixed

[036] - pmacct 0.11.0rc2
by Paolo Lucente (http://freshmeat.net/users/plucente/)
Tue, Aug 8th 2006 14:10
Internet :: Log Analysis
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration
About: pmacct is a small set of passive network monitoring tools to
measure, account, classify, aggregate, and export IPv4 and IPv6 traffic. A
pluggable and flexible architecture allows collected network data to be
stored into memory tables or SQL (MySQL, SQLite, PostgreSQL) databases and
exported through NetFlow or sFlow protocols to remote collectors. pmacct
supports fully customizable historical data breakdown, flow sampling,
filtering and tagging, recovery actions, and triggers. Libpcap, sFlow
v2/v4/v5 and NetFlow v1/v5/v7/v8/v9 are supported.
Changes: The 'nfprobe' plugin can now transport packet/flow classification
tags inside NetFlow v9 datagrams. It has the ability to select an Engine
Type/Engine ID through a newly introduced 'nfprobe_engine' config
directive, and automagically select different NetFlow v9 template IDs,
which is useful when multiple 'nfprobe' plugins run as part of the same
daemon instance. The 'sfprobe' plugin is now able to redistribute NetFlow
flows into sFlow samples. The documentation has been updated with examples
and quickstart guides on how to use pmacct as a NetFlow and sFlow emitter.

[038] - Rats! 1.8.2
by Robert Grimm (http://freshmeat.net/users/rgrimmm/)
Tue, Aug 8th 2006 10:06
Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers
About: Rats! is a parser generator for C-like languages (though currently
it only generates parsers in Java). It has been designed so that grammars
are concise and easily extensible. To this end, grammars are organized
into modules that can be easily changed by adding, removing, or modifying
alternatives in individual productions and composed with each other
through module parameters. Furthermore, it relies on ordered choices to
avoid ambiguities, supports syntactic predicates for unlimited lookahead,
and integrates lexing with parsing. Finally, it has extensive support for
automatically generating abstract syntax trees, thus greatly reducing the
need for explicit semantic actions.
Changes: This release features a completely rewritten Transformer phase.
This phase deduces semantic values; lifts nested choices, repetitions, and
options; and desugars repetitions and options. The rewritten code is more
accurate in deducing semantic values, and more uniform in processing
deeply nested choices, repetitions, and options. It is also more modular
and (hopefully) more easily maintainable.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
About: rest2web is a tool for automatically maintaining Web sites or parts
of Web sites. It integrates with docutils so that contents can be kept in
reStructured Text or HTML. It has a powerful templating and macro system
and can automatically generate index pages and navigation trails (like
sidebars and breadcrumbs). It generates static HTML and can generate
relative links, which means that sites can be viewed from the filesystem.
A "uservalues" system assists with creating sites in multiple languages.
Changes: Several major feature enhancements were made along with a host of
bugfixes and minor changes. There should be no backward compatibility
issues with previous versions. The major new features are new command line
options and global uservalues (available to every page). rest2web will now
build sites (including indexes) with no metadata: it is only necessary to
drop ReST documents in a directory.
