Sun, Aug 20th 2006 10:13
System
Utilities
About: actkbd is a simple daemon that binds commands to keyboard events
(e.g. multimedia keys). It recognises key combinations and can handle
press, repeat, and release events. Currently it only supports the Linux
2.6 event interface, but the platform-specific code is well contained and
support for additional platforms can be added with minimal or no changes
to the rest of the code.
Changes: Some bugs in the device autodetection code were fixed, and the
documentation was slightly improved

Sun, Aug 20th 2006 00:48
Internet :: Log Analysis
Security
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
About: Bruteblock allows system administrators to block various bruteforce
attacks on UNIX services. The program analyzes system logs and adds
attackers' IP addresses into the ipfw2 table, effectively blocking them.
Addresses are automatically removed from the table after specified amount
of time. Bruteblock uses regular expressions to parse logs, which gives it
enough flexibility to be used with almost any network service. Bruteblock
doesn't use any external programs and works with ipfw2 tables via the raw
sockets API.
Changes: A configuration file was added for the proftpd daemon. max_count
processing was fixed. sshd regular expressions are now more strict.

[024] - log4sh 1.3.5 (1.3.X)
by Kate Ward (http://freshmeat.net/users/sfsetse/)
Sun, Aug 20th 2006 11:59
System :: Logging
About: log4sh is a logging framework for shell scripts that works similar
to the other wonderful logging products available from the Apache Software
Foundataion (eg. log4j, log4perl). Although not as powerful as the others,
it can make the task of adding advanced logging to shell scripts easier,
and has much more power than just using simple "echo" commands throughout.
In addition, it can be configured from a properties file so that scripts in
a production environment do not need to be altered to change the amount of
logging they produce.
Changes: Two major things happened in this release. The appenders have
been turned into dynamically created functions that do their logging using
static data to reduce the work in the log() function. This should improve
performance a bit under Solaris and Cygwin (or at least prevent it from
getting worse in future releases). This release also adds a ton of unit
tests, as it was becoming impossible to extensively test the code anymore.

Sun, Aug 20th 2006 00:04
Communications :: File Sharing
About: Reft stands for "Ridiculously Easy File Transfer", and is a file
transfer program without hassles. All that's required is for two parties
to load Reft. One person sends a file, the other person accepts the file,
and that's it.
Changes: A new pane was added in the lower right hand side that shows all
the previous sets of files that were sent. Any set of files can quickly be
resent without having to choose the same files again by clicking the button
near the pane. The file chooser dialog now shows up near the upper left
hand corner of the application. Directories and files appear in seperate
panes and the split pane defaults to show more of the directories/files
and less of the buttons on the bottom. A few things were fixed with
regards to the cancel mechanism.

[042] - SportsTracker 2.2.0
by ssaring (http://freshmeat.net/users/ssaring/)
Sun, Aug 20th 2006 11:51
Database
Information Management :: Records Management
About: SportsTracker is an application for recording sporting activities.
It is not bound to a specific kind of sport, as categories can be created
for all sport types, such as cycling, running, or tennis. The main
advantages are the good overview of your exercises and the easy creation
of exercise statistics for specific time ranges and sport types. Users of
heart rate monitors (Polar and CicloSport) can import, display (including
diagrams), and organize the recorded exercise data.
Changes: The biggest change is the support of sport types that are not
endurance related (e.g. tennis), so distance and speed input is not
required there (was requested by many users). The installation creates an
application starter in the system menu now. The PolarViewer lap panel
displays the data of all laps in a table now, so it's easy comparable.
Bugs have been fixed in the Polar file parsers. The Czech and German
translations have been updated.

Sun, Aug 20th 2006 00:46
System :: Systems Administration
About: Virtualmin is a Webmin module that simplifies the process of
setting up and managing virtual servers. It can create Apache virtual
hosts, BIND DNS domains, MySQL and PostgreSQL databases, and set up
Sendmail or Postfix to accept email for a domain. It can also manage
mailboxes and mail aliases within a domain.
Changes: When email is set to a new or modified mailbox, the From: address
is that of the domain owner. Sub-domains with DNS enabled are now added by
default as records in the parent DNS zone. The server template editing
page is now broken down into sections. The missing view_domain.cgi script
was added. An option was added on the Backup Virtual Servers page to have
each server's backup file transfered by SCP or FTP after it is created.
The delete-domain.pl script was added. Virtusers associated with mailboxes
are not unnecessarily removed and re-added.
