Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Conversion

About: Aften is a simple A/52 (AC-3) audio encoder based on the FFMpeg
libraries. The name is an acronym for A/Fifty-Two ENcoder. It is also
Danish and Norwegian word for 'evening'. It is able to create stereo and
multi-channel AC3-compatible audio streams.

Changes: Bit allocation speedups, a compile-time choice of using floats or
doubles internally, an internal restructuring of MDCT functions, and
bugfixes. quality=0 is now a valid setting.

Database
Documentation
Information Management

About: AgileWiki is a Java-based wiki that provides a virtual wiki for
each registered user, complete with access control and versioning. The
backend includes a built-in database (which uses flat files) and
communicates via RMI to either a Servlet (packaged as a WAR file) or to a
Swing client. AgileWiki is also both an application platform and a
knowledge management system.

Changes: A problem where quote marks in a headline kept causing errors
when the rolon was visited was fixed. The CSec include now updates the
namespace properly. A problem with caches not being cleared was corrected.

Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)
Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: IMAP

About: AlphaMail is a mod_perl webmail system with a C++ middleware
component that is intended to make the system highly scalable. It supports
many Unix variants with any RFC-compliant IMAP server (including UW, Cyrus,
and Dovecot).

Changes: The Red Hat EL4 RPM dependencies were changed, as the old
dependencies caused problems with up2date. The new set installs locally
within the alphamail subtree, and should not cause problems. Some minor
code cleanups that should not affect functionality were made.

[004] - AsItHappens 0.32
  by Mark Abrahams (http://freshmeat.net/users/markabrahams/)
  Tue, Aug 22nd 2006 07:19

System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: AsItHappens is a real-time network statistics collector and
grapher. It collects data from devices over a network via ICMP and SNMP
and displays them on a graph, optionally storing collected data in a
database for later retrieval. Collection types include network response,
bandwidth usage, processor usage, memory usage, Cisco NBAR, and Cisco
NetFlow. AsItHappens polls data in regular intervals, which can be as
short as every second, to give immediate feedback on network performance.
AsItHappens can also graph flow information from packet capture files.

Changes: This release adds SNMPv2c support and enables bandwidth
utilization collection from 64-bit interface counters. It also adds the
aggregation of bandwidth statistics from more than one interface into a
single graph. A new option displays simple summary statistics for a
graph's data sets: minimum, maximum, and average values for each set. This
release also fixes an important rounding bug that caused erroneously high
bandwidth values to be reported in some circumstances.

System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: Astaro Security Linux is an all-in-one network security gateway
that includes a firewall, intrusion protection, virus protection, spam
protection, URL filtering, and a VPN gateway. Features include stateful
packet inspection, deep packet filtering, intrusion detection and
prevention, portscan detection, content filtering, virus detection for
email and Web traffic, whitelists and blacklists, IPSec and PPTP VPN
tunneling, spam blocking, proxies for HTTP, FTP, SMTP, DNS, VoIP, SOCKS,
and Ident, logging, and reporting. The WebAdmin and Up2Date service make
it easy to install, manage, and update.

Changes: This Up2Date includes a security fix for a virus scan engine, a
fix for the HTTP Proxy Report, and a correction in the Chinese language
file. All ASG 420/425 appliance users should install the Up2Date as soon
as possible, because it includes a fix for the sometimes not properly
working Ethernet NICs 4-7.

[013] - DiffJ 1.1.1
  by Jeff Pace (http://freshmeat.net/users/JEugenePace/)
  Tue, Aug 22nd 2006 05:38

Software Development

About: DiffJ is a commandline application that compares Java files based
on content, not whitespace, comments, or reordering of types, methods, or
fields. Its output is based on the Unix program diff, and it also has a
"brief" output format for a concise summary of what changed. It can work
on directories recursively, looking for matching filenames, like "diff -r
dir0 dir1". It is primarily for developers refactoring and reformatting
Java code, for which most difference tools tend to produce misleading
results regarding the type and extent of changes.

Changes: This version includes the latest release of java-diff, the
library that does the comparison of code within methods, constructors, and
field initializers. As a result, a bug in code comparison has been fixed.

Terminals :: Terminal Emulators/X Terminals

About: Eterm is a vt102 terminal emulator intended as a replacement for
xterm. It is designed with a Freedom of Choice philosophy, leaving as much
power, flexibility, and freedom as possible in the hands of the user. It is
designed to look good and work well, but takes a feature-rich approach
rather than one of minimalism. Current features include color support,
background images (all Imlib-supported formats), theme support, and
pseudo-transparency.

Changes: This release contains primarily bugfixes, particularly for dead
keys, but has a few new features thrown in as well, like support for a
"beep command" to replace the PC speaker beep, EWMH/xcompmgr window
opacity support, 256-color support, and NetWM startup ID support.

  by Gerd Kortemeyer (http://freshmeat.net/users/korte/)
  Tue, Aug 22nd 2006 01:24

Education
Education :: Computer Aided Instruction (CAI)
Education :: Testing

About: LON-CAPA (The LearningOnline Network with CAPA) is a learning
content and course management system. It offers an underlying shared
content pool from which instructors across departmental and institutional
boundaries can assemble granular learning content for their courses. It
has strong assessment capabilities, both formative (homework and in-class
using wireless PDAs) and summative (online and bubblesheet exams), with a
one-source multiple-target strategy for the content. It offers students
portfolio space in which they can stage materials for submission to
projects, and provides a number of tools for synchronous and asynchronous
student-student and student-faculty communication. LON-CAPA scales well
with number of students, as load-balancing is possible across the whole
network of servers at participating institutions.

Changes: The system now supports import from WebCT 4 Vista. When selecting
course materials, instructors can jump from Search to Browse. Printing
dialogues are improved, including better multi-column formatting options.
The system now supports batch generation of courses. Online problems can

  Tue, Aug 22nd 2006 01:14

Communications :: File Sharing
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search

About: Sharehound is a file systems indexer and Google-like searcher. It
currently supports SMB file shares (i.e. MS Windows-based network shares
are supported). The Web UI is used for search and crawl monitoring. Files
and directories are indexed and searched by their paths and some other
external attributes, not contents. Historical data (deleted files and
offline hosts information) is indexed, which allows you to have
full-fledged RSS notifications about added, changed, and deleted files in
search results.

Changes: This release fixed a race condition and an issue where Tomcat
could not stop due to the crawl task. The class ID is now stored isntead
of the class name, which will make the index data more stable. The single
SMB host crawl Quartz job's now was changed from
LucenedSingleRootSmbCrawlQuartzJob to LucenedSingleSmbRootCrawlJob.

[051] - Speech and Debate Timekeeper 2.0 beta2
  by Jemmy Chen (http://freshmeat.net/users/jemmyc/)
  Tue, Aug 22nd 2006 14:09

About: Speech and Debate Timekeeper is a multi-platform debate timer for
various debate formats and individual events. It has speech order and time
limits preprogrammed for Policy, Lincoln-Douglas, Parliamentary, Public
Forum, Karl Popper, and miscellaneous debate formats. It also tracks prep
time for both sides. All time limits are user adjustable. These timers give
visual and/or vocal time signals at user defined intervals. At the end of
each speech, cross-examination, or preparation, the timer automatically
sets itself to time the next thing that needs timing at the push of a
button.

Changes: The debate timer and IE timer have been integrated into one
program. The debates and IEs are selected from separate lists in a tab
panel. The program can now be launched by a shell script. It is now
possible to enable audible time signals for Impromptu and Extemporaneous
speeches in the time signal configuration dialog. For constructive
speeches in Parliamentary debates, a tone is played at the beginning and
end of the point of information period (at the end of the first minute and
the beginning of the last minute of the speech). The program now includes
Karl Popper debate format.

About: SRESI is a smart bookmark manager. It currently sports both a
command-line and a PHP interface. It works with both the standard
hierarchical trees and the new and fashionable tagged bookmarks. It was
developed as a way to interface both representation systems. SRESI can use
Del.icio.us, Mozilla, Opera, and XBEL bookmarks, and handles a few more
exports besides. Directories and tags are used equivalently, and the final
hierarchies are inferred from actual tag use.

Changes: The per-element portal output was added to the CLI, and
consequently, the portal output is now accessible from the PHP scripts.
The scripts have still not been safeguarded against malicious input,
though. There was also some code simplification, as well as some bugfixes,

Desktop Environment :: Tools

About: SunflowerApplet is a Gnome Applet that changes the shadow on the
windows managed by compiz when the decorator plugin is enabled. The shadow
on the window moves from left (west) to right (east) from sunrise to
sunset, and stays static from sunset to sunrise, as if the shadow is being
cast by the "sun" moving right (east) to left (west) over your windows. It
requires compiz to be the window manager and the compiz decorator plugin
to be active.

Changes: A preferences dialog was added so that you can set your latitude
and longitude and the applet will approximate the times for sunrise and
sunset.

[057] - Test-AutoBuild 1.2.0
  by Daniel Berrange (http://freshmeat.net/users/danielpb/)
  Tue, Aug 22nd 2006 14:07

Software Development :: Quality Assurance
Software Development :: Testing

About: Test-AutoBuild is a framework for performing continuous,
unattended, automated software builds. It pulls code from source control
repositories (CVS, Perforce, and GNU Arch are currently supported),
calculates inter-module dependencies, builds each module, and then
generates HTML status pages, copies binary packages to Web/FTP server
roots, and sends email status alerts. It is written with flexibility and
extensibility in mind to make it easy to integrate with a wide range of
development tools and languages.

Changes: The backend build engine has been refactored into a modular
workflow engine. Support for Mercurial SCM repos has been added, and
existing SCM implementations extended to allow extraction of changelogs.
Performance and scalability are improved by hard linking files instead of
copying. Error reporting and logging has been enhanced to make debugging
of crashes/problems simpler. Major work has been done on documentating the
tools, configuration file format, and developer APIs. The coverage of the
test suite has been increased to cover a large portion of the critical
code sub-systems.

[059] - Unicode Description Utilities 2.20
  by Bill Poser (http://freshmeat.net/users/billposer/)
  Tue, Aug 22nd 2006 13:59

Text Processing :: Linguistic
Utilities

About: The Unicode Description Utilities is a set of four programs for
finding out what is in a Unicode file. uniname defaults to printing the
character offset of each character, its byte offset, its hex code value,
its encoding, the glyph itself, and its name. Command line options allow
undesired information to be suppressed and the Unicode range to be added.
unidesc reports the character ranges to which different portions of the
text belong. unihist generates a histogram of the characters in its input.
ExplicateUTF8 is intended for debugging or for learning about Unicode. It
determines and explains the validity of a sequence of bytes as a UTF-8
encoding.

Changes: This release fixes bugs in unidesc and unihist caused by use of a
bad UTF-8 reader. It also adds to uniname the option of ignoring ASCII
characters.

Games/Entertainment
Multimedia :: Graphics :: 3D Modeling
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics

About: The primary focus of WFMath is geometric objects. Thus, it includes
several shapes (boxes, balls, lines), in addition to the basic math objects
that are used to build these shapes (points, vectors, and matrices).

Changes: The Quaternion class has been modified so that in a number of
cases when it is initialised from data that would result in corruption,
its valid flag is cleared. Many arithmetic operator functions have been
reimplemented to make them more efficient and more compact.

[062] - X-Chat NewsWindow 1.0
  by pawz (http://freshmeat.net/users/pawz/)
  Tue, Aug 22nd 2006 01:41

Communications :: Chat :: Internet Relay Chat
Internet
System :: Networking

About: X-Chat NewsWindow is a script that redirects all RSS news text and
XDCC file server announcements to special channels instead of flooding
channels. They only produce notify level events, so they cause the channel
tab to go purple (or maroon) rather than red, and don't cause your dock
icon to display the new message icon. It also removes the original message
and event from the original channel, so that channel remains idle. It
ignores any ! or @ prefixed commands by default.

[064] - XML_PullParser 1.2.1
  by Myron Turner (http://freshmeat.net/users/turnermm03/)
  Tue, Aug 22nd 2006 07:53

Text Processing :: Markup
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: XML_PullParser moves the API of the PHP XML facility from an
event-based model to a token-based model. Instead of processing data as it
is passed from the parser to callbacks, a script using PullParser requests
"tokens" from XML_PullParser_getToken() and a number of helper functions.
Tokens are arrays representing XML structures, which become available in
the order in which they appear in the document being parsed. Methods are
provided both to get tokens and to extract their data.

Changes: This release includes a number of feature enhancements to
XML_PullParser_nextElement() and XML_PullParser_getText(), as well as some
minor improvements to error checking in several methods.
