Ever wonder why HP has seven consecutive years of Linux market share

leadership? Maybe it's our portfolio of best-of-breed partner products, or
HP value-add in management, high availability, and virtualization. Maybe
it's the integrated, consolidated infrastructure of HP BladeSystem,
single-source accountability and solution support from HP Services in 160
countries, or just our unwavering commitment to the open source community.

[003] - AntTweakBar 1.03
  by philippe_ (http://freshmeat.net/users/philippe_/)
  Sun, Oct 29th 2006 23:41

Multimedia :: Graphics
Scientific/Engineering
Software Development

About: AntTweakBar is a small and easy-to-use C/C++ library that allows
programmers to quickly add a light and intuitive GUI into OpenGL or
DirectX based graphic programs to interactively tweak them. Program
variables can be linked to a graphical control that allows users to modify
them. Programmers are not required to design the graphical interface by
providing coordinates or by using a visual UI editor. Controls are
automatically organized following an optional given hierarchy.

Changes: The medium font is antialiased. The code now compiles on 64-bit
x86 platforms. A problem which occurred if the library was initialized or
uninitialized more than once was fixed. Some other minor fixes were done.

[004] - Apache AntUnit 1.0 Beta 2
  by Stefan Bodewig (http://freshmeat.net/users/bodewig/)
  Sun, Oct 29th 2006 20:56

Software Development :: Build Tools
Software Development :: Testing

About: AntUnit is a library of Ant tasks that was initially developed to
write tests for Ant tasks without resorting to JUnit. It makes it easy to
turn an existing build file that exhibits an error into an AntUnit test.
Tests are written as targets in a build file using assertion tasks
provided by AntUnit. The antunit task executes targets in a collection of
build files and supports custom listeners in a manner similar to the junit
task's formatters.

Changes: This release fixes a few bugs found in the first beta, and adds a
new assertion that matches strings against regular expressions (requires
Apache Ant 1.7.0 Beta 3 or later).

  by Thierry FOURNIER (http://freshmeat.net/users/fourniert/)
  Sun, Oct 29th 2006 05:17

Security
System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring

About: arpalert uses ARP address monitoring to help prevent unauthorized
connections on the local network. If an illegal connection is detected, a
program or script is launched, which could be used to send an alert
message, for example.

Changes: MAC vendor name is retrieved. Lease files are loaded and the MAC
addresses already discovered are remembered. A port was made for Solaris8
ultrasparc IIi. The "white list", "black list", "authorizations", and
"oui.txt" are reloaded when a SIGHUP is received. The use of errno was
generalized. The code was cleaned. The install system was changed. A
default config was generated. A scheduler bug in dumping lease time was
fixed. A lease file dump is launched before quitting.

[021] - GNU ddrescue 1.3-rc1 (Development)
  by Antonio Diaz Diaz (http://freshmeat.net/users/ant_diaz/)
  Sun, Oct 29th 2006 20:26

System :: Recovery Tools

About: GNU ddrescue is a data recovery tool. It copies data from one file
or block device (hard disc, cdrom, etc) to another, trying hard to rescue
data in case of read errors. GNU ddrescue does not truncate the output
file if not asked to. So, every time you run it on the same output file,
it tries to fill in the gaps. The basic operation of GNU ddrescue is fully
automatic. That is, you don't have to wait for an error, stop the program,
read the log, run it in reverse mode, etc. If you use the logfile feature
of GNU ddrescue, the data is rescued very efficiently (only the needed
blocks are read). Also you can interrupt the rescue at any time and resume
it later at the same point.

Changes: This is a maintenance release. Some changes to the "configure"
script have been made, and the target "sddrescue", which builds a
statically linked ddrescue, has been added to the Makefile.

user interface in a simple XML-like language, and use it with any
interpreter that supports either files, standard I/O, or environment
variables. It can be called as an external program from the interpreter,
but can be used as a stand-alone framework for the application as well.
Stand-alone, bash, and awk examples are provided.

Changes: This version includes support for the widget properties and
signals. A very useful new feature is the Glade compatibility which
enables one to load and execute the Glade XML files from a shell program.

[025] - Hachoir 0.6
  by Haypo (http://freshmeat.net/users/haypo/)
  Sun, Oct 29th 2006 20:21

Software Development :: Disassemblers
Utilities

About: Hachoir is a Python library used to represent a binary file as a
tree of Python objects. Each object has a type, a value, an address, etc.
The goal is to be able to know the meaning of each bit in a file. Hachoir
is able to open invalid or truncated files. It only reads or computes data
on demand to minimize load times. Many field types are predefined (integer,
bit, string, etc.) and strings with a given character set (such as
ISO-8859-1 or UTF-8) are supported. Addresses and sizes are stored in
bits.

Changes: This release supports file editing, so it's possible to change
field values and add and remove fields. hachoir-strip is a example of use:
this program removes metadata, video indexes, padding, etc. to create
anonymous and smaller files. Hachoir can also open corrupted or truncated
files; it can continue to parse the field even if minor errors occur. The
project has been split into many components: hachoir (core),
hachoir-parser (40 file format parsers), hachoir-metadata (metadata
extractor), hachoir-urwid (file viewer), hachoir-grep (find a substring in
a binary file), and hachoir-wx (GUI).

Database :: Database Engines/Servers
Software Development :: Libraries

About: hk_classes is a set of C++ libraries for rapid development of
database applications with all features a modern database application
should have, like forms and reports. hk_classes is database and GUI
independent. It also includes command line tools to use hk_classes in
scripts. hk_classes includes drivers for DBase, Firebird, MS Access,
MySQL, Paradox, PostgreSQL, ODBC, and SQLite.

Changes: A new "dbase" driver is included, which works out of the box. The
PostgreSQL driver better supports modification of the table design. The
"date" widget has a new design, and the CSV import and export dialogs have
been improved. A new form filter that allows easier creation of filters was
implemented. The QBE query editor parses the condition criteria, which will
be automatically completed and corrected. Reports work much better. Module
handling was added and many bugs were fixed.

  Sun, Oct 29th 2006 04:37

Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Filesystems

About: libferris is a virtual filesystem that exposes hierarchical data of
all kinds through a common C++ interface. Access to data is performed using
C++ IOStreams and Extended Attributes (EA) can be attached to each file or
directory to present metadata. Ferris uses a plugin API to read various
data sources and expose them as filesystems and to generate interesting
EA. Current implementations include native (kernel disk IO with fam), XML
(mount an XML file as a filesystem), DB4, xmldb, Evolution, Firefox,
Emacs, LDAP, HTTP, FTP, eet, sockets, RDF/XML, RDF/bdb, and mbox. EA
generators include image, audio, and animation decoders.

Changes: The sqlplus plugin was updated to the 2.1.x API. The configure
script was updated, so fast install is now on by default,
--enable-postgresql-tsearch2-indexing is on if postgresql is found,
--enable-kde-extractor is on if KDE3 is found, and many new --disable-foo
options were added to explicitly disable detection of libraries. Minor
updates were made to xsltfs://. ferris-capplet-auth now includes
postgresql support. ferrisls --xml now creates a DOM and serializes it
using xerces-c. The new --xmle ferrisls option allows binary data to be
presented base64 encoded. The branches:// filesystem was updated. a bug in

About: The LibXDiff library implements basic and yet complete
functionalities to create file differences/patches to both binary and text
files. It uses memory files as file abstraction to achieve both performance
and portability. For binary files, it implements both (with some
modification) the algorithm described in "File System Support for Delta
Compression" by Joshua P. MacDonald and the algorithm described in
"Fingerprinting By Random Polynomials" by Michael O. Rabin. For text
files, it follows directives described in "An O(ND) Difference Algorithm
and Its Variations" by Eugene W. Myers. Memory files used by the library
are basically a collection of buffers that store the file content.

About: libXEL (XEL) is an event log library that stores log data in SQLite
files and is capable of exporting it as XML and CSV. It provides a set of
C/C++ preprocessor (xelm) macros for project integration. The xelm macros
wrap the most common C/C++ macros (e.g. __FILE__) to be posted along with
the event information. It is ideal for, but not limited to, generating log
data for debugging purposes. All of the log information is stored in a
specified SQLite file that can be accessed from many programming
languages. XEL has limited system detection support.

Software Development :: Compilers

About: Neko is a high-level dynamically typed programming language. It can
be used as an embedded scripting language. It has been designed to provide
a common runtime for several different languages. Learning and using Neko
is very easy. You can easily extend the language with C libraries. You can
also write generators from your own language to Neko and then use the Neko
Runtime to compile, run, and access existing libraries. Neko is a good way
for language designers to focus on design and reuse a fast and
well-designed runtime, as well as existing libraries for accessing
filesystem, network, databases, XML, etc. It has a compiler and a virtual
machine. The virtual machine is very lightweight and well optimized. The
VM can be easily embedded into any application, and your libraries can be
accessed using the C foreign function interface.

  Sun, Oct 29th 2006 07:15

Communications :: Usenet News
Multimedia

About: nzb is a binary news grabber. It natively downloads, decodes, and
even streams the files specified in the .nzb file, an XML format which
describes binary files on Usenet by their message-id. libnzb provides
developers with useful nzb processing functions.

Changes: This release focuses on portability. Settings can now be stored
in an nzb.ini file in the program directory, meaning that nzb can be used
without installing it on the system and configuring it, and it doesn't
have any external dependencies. SSL support has also been added, which is
very useful in mobile situations where the network may not be trusted and
your credentials should be protected by encrypting the traffic.

[060] - peak-o-mat 0.99j
  by Christian (http://freshmeat.net/users/ckkart/)
  Sun, Oct 29th 2006 20:56

Scientific/Engineering

About: Peak-o-mat (formerly Lorentz) is a peak fitting program aimed at
the fitting of spectroscopic data. It is especially useful if you're
facing a large amount of spectra which has to be transformed, cleaned, and
fitted. Some predefined peak shapes are available which are frequently used
with spectroscopy, but adding custom functions is very easy.

Changes: This is a pre-release of peak-o-mat 1.0. The GUI has been
completely redesigned and the code has been cleaned up. Support for
Numeric has been dropped in favour of numpy 1.0. New features can be added
easily by writing your own modules. The fit now includes confidential
intervals for the parameters, and error weights may be specified.

  Sun, Oct 29th 2006 06:17

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes

About: html2ps is a PHP equivalent of the popular Perl script by the same
name that accurately converts HTML with images, complex tables (including
rowspan/colspan), layers/divs, and CSS styles to Postscript and PDF.
Unlike most other HTML2PS/HTML2PDF converters, it offers good CSS 2.1
support and is very tolerant to non-valid HTML. It can convert even
CSS-intense sites like aol.com and msn.com.

Changes: Minor bugs were fixed. Minor documentation and FAQ updates were
done. Tables with several colspans in the same row under certain
conditions could cause notice messages, so this has been fixed. Missing
support for the "in" and "pc" CSS units was fixed. Non-valid HTML
containing table sections with omitted TR tags could result in notices or
warnings, and tables were rendered incorrectly, so this has been fixed.

  Sun, Oct 29th 2006 06:05

System :: Archiving :: Backup

About: rdup is a utility inspired by rsync and the Plan9 way of doing
backups. rdup itself does not backup anything; it only prints a list of
the names of files that have changed since the last backup. It also
handles files that are removed, allowing for correct incremental backups.
Auxilary scripts are needed to act on this list and implement the backup
strategy. This way rdup can be kept lean and mean.

Changes: A hardlink backup scheme was added. All utilities were renamed to
have a "rdup-" prefix. The default output of rdup and the internal filelist

[072] - SffTools 3.1 (SffToBmp)
  by peter (http://freshmeat.net/users/pschaefer/)
  Sun, Oct 29th 2006 20:30

Communications :: Fax

About: SffTools consists of SffToBmp, a little utility that converts
Structured Fax Files to BMP, PBM, JPEG, or single- and multipage TIFF
format, and SffView, a GUI viewer for those files. The tools should be
especially useful to people who are faxing with ISDN cards because the
CAPI interface of these cards generates such files. CAPI support for Linux
is available for the active card AVM B1 and the passive card AVM Fritz!.

Changes: SffToBmp has been around for a while, and one should think it has
seen every strange SFF file yet. However, there seem to be a few odd ones
still left. This release adds support for skipping "junk" at the beginning
of the file until it reaches the "SFF" header. It will skip up to 2048
bytes before giving up. Other changes are backported from the Debian

see anything at all on stdout.

Office/Business :: Financial

About: SolidState is a Web-based billing and customer management solution
for Web hosting providers. It is written in PHP, uses MySQL, is fully

and a manager interface for administering customers, services, and orders.

Changes: A remote file inclusion vulnerability present in most class files
was fixed. A French translation and a Bosnian translation were added for
the Order interface. A bug that was preventing services that recurred once
a month from showing up on invoices was fixed. A check was added to the
"generate invoice" page to prevent invoices from being generated for

Changes: This is a version with important changes to support
multi-threading. This version provides two kinds of threads: synchronous
LURC threads and asynchronous POSIX threads (a.k.a. pthreads). Other
changes include better error messages, the ability to compile byte-codes
to a C file, new optimizations, more customizable REPL, some new

About: Wine is an implementation of the Windows API on top of X and Unix.
It does not require Microsoft Windows, but can use native Windows DLLs if
they are available. It provides both a development toolkit for porting
Windows source code to Unix as well as a program loader, allowing many
unmodified Windows programs to run on x86-based Unixes.

Changes: Support was added for multiple monitors using Xinerama. Various
MSI fixes and improvements were made. Many memory leaks were fixed. Many
common controls were fixed. Lots of other bugs were fixed.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: WordPress is a state-of-the-art, semantic, personal publishing
platform with a focus on aesthetics, Web standards, and usability. It was
born out of a desire for an elegant, well-architectured personal
publishing system, and is the official successor to b2/cafelog. While
primarily geared towards functioning as a Weblog, it is also a flexible
CMS capable of managing many types of Web sites. In addition to the basic
Weblog functions, it also has an integrated link manager (e.g. for
blogrolls), XFN support, support for "static" pages, Atom and RSS feeds
for both content and comments, XML-RPC blogging API support (Blogger,
MetaWeblog, and Movable Type APIs), spam blocking features, advanced
cruft-free URL generation, a flexible theme system, and an advanced plugin
API.

Changes: This maintenance release contains mostly minor bugfixes, a few
small feature enhancements, a couple of database speedups, and one minor
security fix. There is one known bug which only affects sites running
under FastCGI, but a plugin is available to work around that issue.

About: XSI is an easy-to-use, secure, and comprehensive system monitoring
daemon that replies to network queries with XML-encoded system information
and statistics. This data can then be analyzed, graphed, or otherwise
presented by a front-end.

Changes: This release comes with many changes and even more cleaning up.
Portability fixes and improvements were a main focus, as well as adding a
couple of features, such as CARP(4) status reports on OpenBSD and FreeBSD,
and interrupts per second output on NetBSD. Another little bonus is CPU
speed reporting on some NetBSD architectures. The XML Schema has a new
<carp /> element, and was slightly changed in the RAID section.
