[004] - bit 0.4.1
  by Rick Vinyard (http://freshmeat.net/users/rvinyard/)
  Sat, Mar 24th 2007 11:22

Software Development :: Libraries

About: bit is a library that makes it easier to dynamically manipulate
data buffers containing fields that do not have octet (byte) boundaries.
An example is the IP header, which is generally dealt with at compile time
via bit fields in a structure. A key feature of the bit library is support
for loading data formats described in XML files and dynamically parsing
those fields at run time. This library was initially created to support
reading various kinds of robotic device I/O (IR sensors, motors), but it
has also been used for run time parsing of IP, TCP, UDP, and RTP headers.

Changes: This minor release makes all bit::Data comparison operators const
methods, allowing for comparison of const data items.

[005] - Botan 1.7.0 (Development)
  by Jack Lloyd (http://freshmeat.net/users/randombit/)
  Sat, Mar 24th 2007 12:25

Security :: Cryptography
Software Development :: Libraries

About: Botan is a C++ library of cryptographic algorithms. It includes a
wide selection of cryptographic algorithms (including AES, DES, SHA-1,
RSA, and DSA, among many others). It also support X.509 certificates and
several common certificate-related formats and protocols. It has a high
level interface, is easily portable to most systems and compilers, and
includes a substantial tutorial and API reference.

Changes: DSA parameter generation has been changed to match the new system
in FIPS 186-3. OIDs for the Rabin-Williams and Nyberg-Rueppel public key
signature schemes have been added, so those keys can now be imported and
exported using the same system used for RSA and DSA keys. In addition,
those keys can be used in X.509 certificates. Portions of the API
documentation have been reorganized and rewritten to help cover the most
common tasks first.

  Sat, Mar 24th 2007 00:52

System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Archiving :: Mirroring

About: Clonezilla is a partition or disk cloning tool similar to Symantec
Ghost. Unlike other open source clone tools such as G4U or G4L, Clonezilla
saves and restores only blocks in use on the hard drive if the file system
is supported. For unsupported file systems, dd is used instead. It has
been used to clone a 5 GB system to 40 clients in about 10 minutes.

Changes: Some more options were added to the boot menu: "To RAM", which
makes it possible to remove boot media (CD, USB flash drive) when booting
is finished, a failsafe mode, and a FreeDOS option. A bug where the dialog
menu was distorted was fixed.

[016] - fastutil 5.0.9
  by Sebastiano Vigna (http://freshmeat.net/users/vigna/)
  Sat, Mar 24th 2007 11:48

Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: fastutil extends the Java Collections Framework by providing
type-specific maps, sets, lists, and queues for Java with a small memory
footprint and fast access and insertion; it also includes a fast I/O API

[029] - RPL/2 4.00pre8u (Development)
  by JKB (http://freshmeat.net/users/jkb/)
  Sat, Mar 24th 2007 12:00

Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
Software Development :: Interpreters

About: RPL/2 (Reverse Polish Lisp/2) is a langage derived from the RPL
made by Hewlett-Packard for its HP-28S. It has some extensions
(preprocessor, compilated libraries, new functions), a TeX output, and can
draw graphics.

Changes: SYSEVAL was modified to return an error when the execvp() syscall
cannot execute its arguments. The hard-float sparc option was removed from
mkrplso. A major bug was fixed in the SQL intrinsic, which would hang when
a query did not return any values. Escape sequences can be used in SYSEVAL
arguments. Graphic and PostScript outputs are now cleared in a child
process. Locales are now used by the preprocessor. A major bug was fixed
in impression_tex(). PRINT did not work due to a bug introduced by
multitasking code. SORT can now use a name as its argument.

Security

About: RWSecure parses the /var/log/secure (or specified secure log) file
for invalid usernames or failed passwords. If more than a specified number
of invalid or failed attempts are made by one IP, indicating a brute force
attack, it will add that IP to your /etc/hosts.deny file by default.

Changes: Improved handling of IPv6 and illegal users.

[035] - xterm patch #225
  by T.E.Dickey (http://freshmeat.net/users/tedickey/)
  Sat, Mar 24th 2007 12:18

Desktop Environment
Terminals :: Terminal Emulators/X Terminals

About: The xterm program is the standard terminal emulator for the X
Window System. It provides DEC VT102/VT220 and Tektronix 4014 compatible
terminals for programs that can't use the window system directly. If the
underlying operating system supports terminal resizing capabilities (for
example, the SIGWINCH signal in systems derived from 4.3bsd), xterm will
use the facilities to notify programs running in the window whenever it is
resized.

Changes: New features include a termcap-driven keyboard and the ability to
spawn a new terminal. ASCII equivalents were added for select/paste. The
Urgency hint is set for the window manager. Bugs were fixed.
