Communications
Communications :: Chat
Communications :: Chat :: Unix Talk

About: 123 Flash Chat Server is a chat server with a Flash-based client.
It can fully integrate with the user databases of Postnuke, phpbb,
phpnuke, vbulletin, Invision board, and MaxWebPortal, etc. It's a fast,
easy and affordable method of hosting and managing real-time chat rooms.
It allows you to organize chat events, collaborative work sessions, and
online meetings reliably. The interface and function are customizable.

Changes: An optional white board module was added. The image transfer
module was enhanced so that not only a local picture can be uploaded but
also a picture on the Internet can be linked. Users can send an Internet
URL with the suffix as ".jpg" and the chat client will load and display
the image accordingly. Management privileges were added, so the admin,
moderator, and speaker will not be restricted by the limit on the number
of users in a room. The bug in which some public messages were missing was
fixed.

About: Amanda is a popular network backup and archiving software that
protects multiple machines running various versions of Linux, Unix, and
Microsoft Windows operating systems. It supports tapes, disks, optical
media, and changers.

Changes: Many bugs were fixed. The code was cleaned up. KRB5 auth is now
working. The program now works with IPv6 addresses. The Amanda
configuration file (amanda.conf) was changed. Debugging is enabled in the
configuration file. The tapetype is set to "readblocksize" if
maxtapeblocksize is set too large for your hardware.

About: aoeui is a lightweight unobtrusive text editor optimized for the
Dvorak keyboard layout. It interacts easily with the rich text processing
environment around it.

Changes: Rewritten tab completion (works for words now, and is gleaned
from open files as well as pathnames) and code alignment. Better colors in
xterms. Regex searches and captures to registers. The man page and keyboard
diagram are now on the home page. Also, somewhat less ugly colors are used
in xterms.

Multimedia :: Graphics :: 3D Modeling
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Analysis

About: The aim of auch is to visualize harmonics in musical recordings.
Many tools show the spectrum, but this tool focuses on one or two specific
octaves with an indication of the tonica (the key) and sub-dominant(IV) and
dominant(V). It also supports wavelet transformation and resampling to
further analyze and clean-up the recording. This way, notes, chords, and
harmonics in a musical piece become more clear. Another feature is that
this tool can compare outgoing audio (from a .wav file) with incoming
audio (microphone). This way, the effect of external filters can be
tested.

Changes: The 'spiral' display type is designed to visualize rhythm in
music. If it is correctly tuned, beats show up as upward pointing spikes
while off-beats as down-pointing spikes. The basic idea is to use
reflection of impulses. Regulary repeated pulses will add up to a strong
and steady pulse, unlike irregular pulses who are weaker and move.

Internet :: Name Service (DNS)
Software Development :: Libraries

About: Avahi is a framework for Multicast DNS Service Discovery
(mDNS/DNS-SD a.k.a. Zeroconf) on Linux. It allows programs to publish and
discover services running on a local network with no specific
configuration. For example, you can plug into a network and instantly find
printers to print to, files to look at, and people to talk to.

Changes: This release adds a new standard GTK dialog "avahi-ui" for
browsing for services. avahi-autoipd has been ported to FreeBSD. Linux
inotify support has been added. There are many bugfixes and minor
improvements.

Communications :: Conferencing
Desktop Environment :: Tools
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Capture/Recording

About: Boxtream is both an audio and video encoder and streamer and an
assembly of audio and video hardware, forming a mobile video streaming
studio. It is designed to easily record and stream live presentations
including a presenter and synchronized slides, or slides only, or
presenter only, and was built to stream live courses over the Internet for
distance learning students. It supports and autodetects several brands and
models of video switchers. It can be entirely controlled remotely over
XML-RPC, and includes an X11 interface built with wxWidgets. By default,
it supports five different streaming and recording scenarios. The software
can still be used without most of the hardware included in the original
boxtream project.

Changes: The threading model and remotely accessible API were simplified.
The commands launched at the beginning and ending of a recording are now
launched asynchronously. Screenshots were removed from the development and
distribution trees to create much smaller tarballs, and were uploaded to
the Web site instead. Several minor fixes and code changes were made. The
subversion repository is now available through Apache instead of through
svnserve. The bug tracker is now publicly accessible.

About: cgmail (check Gmail) is an email checker and notifier applet for
the GNOME desktop. It will periodically check your Gmail account and will
notify you of new incoming messages. It will use GNOME Keyring to store
your credentials for security enhancements instead of storing it in plain
text files. It uses a fresh DBUS notification to tell you that a new
message is into your Gmail inbox.

Changes: The status icon will display the incoming email count.
Notifications are cleaner, and include a button to open a browser to the
Gmail URL. An Italian translation has been added. Now only 5 email
subjects and senders will be shown on notifications to avoid to
overlapping the desktop area. The popup menu has a better menu positioning

System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Archiving :: Mirroring

About: Clonezilla is a partition or disk cloning tool similar to Symantec
Ghost. It saves and restores only blocks in use on the hard drive if the
file system is supported. For unsupported file systems, dd is used
instead. It has been used to clone a 5 GB system to 40 clients in about 10
minutes.

Changes: A helper program was added to make it easier to mount a device or

  Wed, Apr 18th 2007 06:35

About: inotail is a replacement for the 'tail' program found in the base
installation of every Linux/Unix system. It makes use of the inotify
infrastructure in recent versions of the Linux kernel to speed up tailing
files in the follow mode (the '-f' option). Standard tail polls the file
every second by default, while inotail listens to special events sent by
the kernel through the inotify API to determine whether a file needs to be
reread.

About: Konch is a highly-configurable KDE system tray applet that acts as
a proxy to ordinary scripts. You can change the icon shown in the tray,
apply several effects, and create menus. Konch relays events to your
script via command-line parameters or STDIN. Your script can respond by
simply printing out appropriate lines (such as a menu listing), or
executing a program.

Changes: This release adds several effects (fade, grayscale, monochrome,
desaturate, gamma, and overlay). It has nested sub-menus and
check/uncheck, enable/disable, and showitem/hideitem commands, a
restoreIcon command, a "set" command for semi-persistent variables in
Standard mode, "mclick" and "quit" events, and system tray quit
confirmations per script. It handles many startup and runtime errors, and

About: SPWrapper analyzes Oracle database system tables, finds out
parameter names and types, and writes the Java code necessary for calling

Changes: This release introduces new functionalities. Not only it is
possible to create a Java wrapper for stored procedures, but also for SQL
statements. For instance, the statement "INSERT INTO TBL(ID,NAME)
VALUES(4,'mouse')" can be used to produce a Java class with two input
parameters that executes inserts into the table TBL. The same is possible
for SELECT, and in that case the class can be quickly used with JSTL
forEach to render SELECT results into HTML tables. SPWrapper now supports

[069] - XMLUnit 1.1 Beta 1
  by Stefan Bodewig (http://freshmeat.net/users/bodewig/)
  Wed, Apr 18th 2007 23:51

Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
Software Development :: Testing

About: XMLUnit for Java provides two JUnit extension classes, XMLAssert
and XMLTestCase, and a set of supporting classes (e.g. Diff, DetailedDiff,
Transform, SimpleXpathEngine, Validator, and NodeTest) that allow
assertions to be made about the differences between two pieces of XML, the
outcome of transforming a piece of XML using XSLT, the evaluation of an
XPath expression on a piece of XML, the validity of a piece of XML, or
individual nodes in a piece of XML that are exposed by DOM Traversal.
XMLUnit for Java can also treat HTML content (even badly-formed HTML) as
valid XML to allow these assertions to be made about the content of Web
pages.

Changes: This version fixes all known issues of version 1.0 and adds a few
new features. The most important changes are support for XML Namespace in
XPath tests, support for XML Schema validation, and support for the JAXP
1.3 XPath engine in javax.xml.xpath. In addition several minor but useful
enhancements have been made.
