The Case For Java-Based Scripting Languages
by Subhash Chandran (http://freshmeat.net/~subwiz/)
Section: Editorials
Sat, Apr 21st 2007 00:00
Scripting languages are ubiquitous. They are used everywhere: in log
parsing, triggering applications, or performing volatile operations which
require frequent changes in logic. Shell script was one of the most
popular languages through the end of 1980s. Then came Perl, which
revolutionized the world of scripting. Later in the day, we have Python
and Ruby, both pretty popular. In an organization having primarily Java
skills, is it worthwhile to have your developers learn these languages?

by Grzegorz Adam Hankiewicz (http://freshmeat.net/users/gradha/)

Games/Entertainment
Multimedia :: Graphics
Software Development :: Libraries
About: Allegro is a multi-platform game library for C/C++ developers that
provides many functions for graphics, sounds, player input (keyboard,
mouse, and joystick), and timers. It also provides fixed and floating
point mathematical functions, 3D functions, file management functions,
compressed datafile, and a GUI.
Changes: The Mac OS X port is broken. A new mouse cursor API is used, but
it doesn't work in Windows fullscreen modes. Some new API documentation
was added with NaturalDocs. A new exnew_events.c example was added,
demonstrating the new API. CMake and SCons build systems were implemented,
mainly for Allegro developers. Various bugfixes and minor changes were
made.

Education
About: Anki is an intelligent, spaced-repetition flash card program
designed to maximize your memory potential and minimize the time spent
studying. It has special features useful when studying Japanese, but can
be used to study anything.
Changes: The program was rewritten in Qt due to too many bugs in the
previous toolkit. The new version sports a cleaner interface, enhanced
deck and kanji statistics, and easier to use synchronization support.

Office/Business
Office/Business :: CRM
Office/Business :: Scheduling
About: Auto Project Planner automatically calculates a proper project plan
based on your effort estimations and the due dates you have in mind. A list
of tasks and a list of employees can be defined. Tasks can be assigned to
one or more employees. It is also possible to define a maximum percentage
value an employee can/should work on a task. Public holidays, leaves,
weekly working hours, and more parameters can be specified and are
considered in the calculation. According to this input, the software
computes time plans by minimizing the MSE (mean squared error) between
expected and computed end dates.
Changes: The project Web site has been moved to kitesoft.net. The Web
appearance has been reworked. The first UML design diagrams have been
added. This should give developers a better understanding.

About: cpdetector is a small yet clever framework for codepage detection
that integrates different strategies. It may be used as a library for
third party software that accesses textual data over network. It also
includes a best-practice implementation in form of a command line tool
that allows sorting and transforming large collections of documents based
on their codepage. Available strategies include: jchardet (exclusion,
frequency analysis, and guessing), detection of the HTML charset property,
and detection of the XML encoding declaration.
Changes: Severe errors like a potential infinite loop and incorrect file
handling have been removed.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
About: Dada Mail is an intuitive, Web-based email list management system,
which runs on any hosting account that can execute custom CGI scripts.
Dada Mail is also a conceptual art project. Dada Mail handles double
opt-in/opt-out subscriptions, and can send complex announce-only and/or
discussion mailing list messages. It also provides archiving, viewing,
searching, resending, and syndicating (through RSS or Atom) sent messages.
Dada Mail produces valid XHTML and sticks to best practices when creating
email messages.
Changes: This release is purely a bug fix release. Of note are some fixes
to the dada_bridge.pl plugin (primarily used for discussion lists) that
close up some security holes found in the plugin's message validation and
moderation systems, as well as handling the POP3 mail queue correctly and
dealing with large messages that may cause havoc to the Dada Mail system.

popularity ranks), support for various character sets, and phrases
segmenting for the Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Thai languages. It has
accent-insensitive search, mod_dpsearch for Apache, and support for
internationalized domain names.

Communications :: Email :: Mail Transport Agents

About: fakehermes is a small, lightweight fake SMTP server. It's useful as
a way to avoid spam by configuring your domains to point their secondary
SMTP server to a fakehermes server. It will log not only the email
messages involved, but also how they are trying to send email and whether
they should be considered spam or not. This information can be used to
"profile" the spammers that send you spam and can allow you to configure
or tune other spam filters. It supports SPF and RBL checking.
Changes: This release adds three new checks: whether the remote machine is
an SMTP server, the from domain exists, and the helo domain exists. With
these checks, most spam messages will get a rating greater than 1. RPM
releases are now available.

Sat, Apr 21st 2007 13:01
System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Firewalls
About: fwsnort translates snort rules into an equivalent iptables ruleset.
By making use of the iptables string match module, fwsnort can detect
application layer signatures which exist in many snort rules. fwsnort adds
a --hex-string option to iptables, which allows snort rules that contain
hex characters to be input directly into iptables rulesets without
modification. In addition, fwsnort makes use of the IPTables::Parse Perl
module in order to (optionally) restrict the snort rule translation to
only those rules that specify traffic that could potentially be allowed
through an existing iptables policy.
Changes: This is a major update to add the ability to send packets that
match content or uricontent criteria to userspace via the iptables QUEUE
or NFQUEUE targets. This can be used to speed up snort_inline IPS. A
fwsnort mailing list was added. A bug was fixed to remove any existing
jump rules from the built-in INPUT, OUTPUT, and FORWARD chains before
creating a new jump rules. This allows the fwsnort.sh script to be
executed multiple times without creating a new jump rule in the fwsnort
chains for each execution.

About: GNU SASL is an implementation of the Simple Authentication and
Security Layer framework and a few common SASL mechanisms. SASL is used
by network servers such as IMAP and SMTP to request authentication from
clients, and in clients to authenticate against servers. The library
includes support for the SASL framework (with authentication functions
and application data privacy and integrity functions) and at least
partial support for the CRAM-MD5, EXTERNAL, GSSAPI, ANONYMOUS, PLAIN,
SECURID, DIGEST-MD5, LOGIN, NTLM, and KERBEROS_V5 mechanisms.
Changes: IMAP protocol usage was fixed in the 'gsasl' command-line tool
server. GSSAPI servers are now supported in the 'gsasl' command-line tool.
A self-test of the gsasl_check_version API was added. Translation updates
were made and gnulib files were updated. The project now uses autoconf

About: Yaacfi is an authentication, authorization, and access control
filter for J2EE Web applications. This filter loosely emulates J2EE
servlet container role based security with some extensions, and allows to
easily implement login procedures for much more complicated user
interaction schemes than the standard container-based security form login
procedure. These schemas are required to provide cookie login, openid
login, explicit login, etc. The filter is completely compatible with
Struts.
Changes: Unsafe use of WeakHashMap was removed.

About: zfec is a fast, portable, and programmable implementation of
erasure coding. It includes a C library, a Python library, and a
command-line tool. Erasure coding is also known as "forward error
correction", which is the generation of redundant blocks of information
such that if some blocks are lost then the original data can be recovered
from the remaining blocks. The RAID-5 algorithm is an erasure code. But
instead of recovering from the loss of only a single element, zfec can be
parameterized to choose in advance the number of elements whose loss it
can tolerate.
