System :: Logging

About: Alerttail monitors a given file and executes a list of actions when
a user-defined text pattern has been written to the file. For example, the
user can pop up a GTK notification window when a certain message is
written to a log file. Actions can be alerttail built in actions (GTK
notify action, geoipLocalization action, or filtering text action) or a
custom user defined shell command action.

Changes: The action regexReplaceAction allows users to replace captured
group texts with a custom one. This way, any user defined text will be
shown between captured groups. The Log4cxx dependency is no longer needed.
A custom logging framework is provided. The Web site documentation has been
updated.

Communications :: Conferencing
Desktop Environment :: Tools
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Capture/Recording

About: Boxtream is both an audio and video encoder and streamer and an
assembly of audio and video hardware, forming a mobile video streaming
studio. It is designed to easily record and stream live presentations
including a presenter and synchronized slides, or slides only, or
presenter only, and was built to stream live courses over the Internet for
distance learning students. It supports and autodetects several brands and
models of video switchers. It can be entirely controlled remotely over
XML-RPC, and includes an X11 interface built with wxWidgets. By default,
it supports five different streaming and recording scenarios. The software
can still be used without most of the hardware included in the original
boxtream project.

Changes: The encoder can now generate a Python source program which can
record a different event at a later date while using the very same
scenario. For example, switching between inputs or adding and removing
text overlays will be done at exactly the same time, and the type of
recording, the video balance values, and so on will be exactly the same as
they were during the recording of the original event. The generated program
is a headless XML-RPC client to the encoder, which defaults to talking to
the encoder running on localhost, but which can also talk to a remote
encoder. Minor bugs were fixed.

About: CDnavigator is an application that files your CDs and DVDs in a
database. It also deposits information about photos (JPEG), music (MP3),
and films stored in such media. You can also store other metadata such as
notes and ratings. You can search over all items and save the choices.
CDnavigator supports an automatic cache that saves the most frequently
used data on hard disk. Photos can be viewed directly in the application.
It can download new photos from a camera, sort them into albums, and
prepare them for burning on CD.

Changes: A user can now configure more devices and CD/DVD types. The XML
configuration structure was changed. The DB structure was changed. New
photos albums can be created. Photos can be downloaded. EXIF orientation
tag can be rotated and changed. Sorting can be done according to EXIF date
tag. Files can be renamed. Photo keys are shown. Bugs were fixed.

About: cgmail (check Gmail) is an email checker and notifier applet for
the GNOME desktop. It will periodically check your Gmail account and will
notify you of new incoming messages. It will use GNOME Keyring to store
your credentials for security enhancements instead of storing it in plain
text files. It uses a fresh DBUS notification to tell you that a new
message is into your Gmail inbox.

Changes: Notification messages that have already been displayed are not
shown again unless the user clicks on the status icon. French, Polish, and
Swedish translations were added. A bug was corrected so that cgmail will no
longer crash if there are more than 5 new mail messages to notify.

  Tue, Apr 24th 2007 13:51

Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)
Communications :: Email :: Filters

About: getmail is intended as a simple, secure, and reliable replacement
for fetchmail. It retrieves email (either all messages, or only unread
messages) from one or more POP3, SPDS, or IMAP4 servers (with or without
SSL) for one or more email accounts, and reliably delivers into
qmail-style Maildirs, mboxrd files, or through external MDAs (command
deliveries) specified on a per-account basis. getmail also has excellent
support for domain (multidrop) mailboxes, including delivering messages to
different users or destinations based on the envelope recipient address.

Changes: This release explicitly watches for broken POP3 servers that
return a blank UIDL value (not permitted by the POP3 protocol) and print a
fatal error message.

  by Frederik Dannemare (http://freshmeat.net/users/dannemare/)
  Tue, Apr 24th 2007 05:48

System :: Networking

About: Local IP Takeover provides network link redundancy within a single
server that has multiple network interface cards (NICs) with each NIC
connected to separate network switches. If the primary NIC fails (i.e. it
cannot ping its default gateway), the "service" IP (the IP that the
outside world connects to) will automatically float to the secondary NIC
and a specially crafted ARP (utilizing send_arp) will be broadcast on the
local network, thereby instructing all other hosts to update their local
ARP cache. The result is minimal service downtime. Plus, no manual
intervention is required in the event that a network card, cable, or
switch breaks.

[021] - MirBSD Korn Shell R29c
  by mirabile (http://freshmeat.net/users/mirabile/)
  Tue, Apr 24th 2007 04:58

System :: Shells

About: The MirBSD Korn Shell (mksh) is an actively developed successor of
pdksh (the Public Domain Korn Shell), aimed at producing a shell good for
interactive use, but with primary focus on scripting. It is intended to be
portable to most *nix-like operating systems as long as they're not too
obscure. mksh incorporates improvements from OpenBSD and Debian, as well
as bugfixes and enhancements developed for the MirOS and FreeWRT projects.
The emacs command line editing mode is UTF-8 capable, and Byte Order Marks
are ignored in scripts. The shell supports large files, as well as all
pdksh and some csh, AT&T ksh, and GNU bash features, is compatible with
the Bourne shell and POSIX (within limits, but you can turn off brace
expansion), has no limit on array sizes, and incorporates some other
useful builtins and features. While being already fast and small (without
losing functionality), flags to make it even smaller can be given at
compile time. An interactive shell reads "~/.mkshrc" on startup.

Changes: A rare out-of-bounds array access was fixed. Debian GNU/HURD and
GNU/kFreeBSD are now fully supported, and support for HP-UX 11i was added.
This release added shebang support, UTF-8 Byte Order Mark processing, and
the "dot.mkshrc" sample file. One of the regression tests is broken on
HFS+ (Macintosh).

About: The PCRE library is a set of functions that implement regular
expression pattern matching using the same syntax and semantics as Perl 5,
with just a few differences. PCRE is used by many programs, including Exim,
Postfix, and PHP.

Changes: Very little of the C code has changed (one small new feature, a

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio

About: PeerStream Audio Video Streaming server is a lightweight, scalable

Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: POrqi is a library that modifies POJOs to make synchronous and
asynchronous calls across the network. During asynchronous messaging,
conversational state is automatically persisted. Reliable orchestrator
services can then be generated from simple Java objects, giving
Lightweight SOA. Container and network support via Spring and Mule are
supported.

Changes: Asynchronous and synchronous support have been integrated and now
share the same messaging and method identification classes. The
documentation includes a fully worked example for synchronous messaging
which deploys a system both as a monolithic application and as distributed
services without changing the business logic.

About: Frink is a calculating tool and programming language designed to
help you in the real world. It tracks units of measurement throughout all
calculations and ensures that answers are correct. It converts between
systems of measurement and has a huge library of physical data. It handles
conversions between time zones, currencies, and historical values of the
U.S. dollar and the British pound, translates between several languages,
does date/time math, and more.

Changes: This release adds a "set" datatype. In addition, several
functions were added for the upcoming symbolic algebra capabilities. These
include suppression of warnings for undefined variables, and functions to
substitute parts of expressions with other expressions. Interval
arithmetic was also changed to allow degenerate intervals (that is,
intervals with the same upper and lower bounds) to keep from collapsing
into a single number. This allows analysis of numerical error in
algorithms.
