  Thu, Apr 26th 2007 15:33

Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules
System :: Boot
System :: Operating System :: Linux Distributions

About: Cobbler is a command line tool for configuring provisioning and
update servers. It supports provisioning via PXE, virtualization (Xen),
and re-provisioning an existing Linux system ("auto-kickstarting") when
having a PXE environment isn't possible. The latter two features are
enabled by usage of ’koan’ (a client side provisioning application) on the
remote system. Update server features include yum mirroring over rsync://
and integration of those mirrors with kickstart. Cobbler is easy to use
and has an accompanying Python API. It supports RHEL4+, Fedora Core 5+,
and derivative distributions.

Changes: This release improves "import" support for RHEL4, Centos 4, and
older distributions. It removes the "--basedir" parameter for createrepo,
such that "cobbler import" will work with newer createrepos that do not
have support for this parameter. Koan 0.3.1 is also released, and includes
a fix for a bug in the "--replace-self" reprovisioning feature introduced
in 0.2.9.

About: Cubulus is an analytic engine and a slice and dice Web interface on
top of a relational database (MySQL and SQLite at the moment). It caches
calculated cells, and is able to parse basic MDX queries.

About: The Linbox Rescue Server (LRS) is a tool to centralize hard disk
images (like Ghost Enterprise Server), file backups, hardware and software
inventory (with Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X agents), software deployment,
and remote access on a single server. It can be managed from any PC
through a Web-based administration interface, and disk images can be
restored using PXE boot or using a bootable CD or DVD. It supports Ext2/3,
ReiserFS, XFS, JFS, and LVM v1/v2.

Changes: This new major release adds a secure remote software deployment
system compatible with Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, or any Unix system which
can run OpenSSH.

[027] - Linux graphical bootsplash 3.1.6-2.6.21
  by Stefan Reinauer (http://freshmeat.net/users/stepan/)
  Thu, Apr 26th 2007 14:39

Desktop Environment
System :: Boot
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: Linux graphical bootsplash allows you to use custom graphics during
early system startup. It makes it possible to place a nice graphic behind
or above the kernel boot messages. It hooks into the fbcon layer and, if
activated, searches the initial ramdisk for a JPEG picture to show. On any
output operations to the console, it takes care of painting a margin around
your text and a background picture behind the text with a set of special
cfb functions.

Changes: The bootsplash patch was updated to apply cleanly against Linux
kernel 2.6.21.

[029] - Mini-XML 2.3
  by Michael Sweet (http://freshmeat.net/users/easysw/)
  Thu, Apr 26th 2007 23:39

Software Development :: Libraries
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: Mini-XML is a small XML parsing library that you can use to read
XML and XML-like data files in your application without requiring large
non-standard libraries. It only requires an ANSI C compatible compiler
(GCC works, as do most vendors' ANSI C compilers) and a "make" program. It
supports reading of UTF-8 and UTF-16 and writing of UTF-8 encoded XML
strings and files, and provides a hierarchical view of the file via a
linked-list tree structure of typed nodes and functions for managing,
traversing, indexing, and searching the tree.

Changes: This version adds a SAX API, more convenience functions, a user
data pointer to the mxml_node_t structure, and improved HTML and new man
page output from mxmldoc. This release also offers relaxed LGPL licensing
that allows static linking.

[030] - MOSIX Cluster and Grid Management 2.21.0.0 for Linux 2.6.21 (Linux

About: MOSIX is a management system for Linux clusters and organizational
grids that provides a Single-System Image. In a MOSIX based system, there
is no need to modify or link applications with any library, copy files,
login to remote nodes, or even assign processes to different nodes; it is
all done automatically. Just "fork and forget", like in an SMP.

[031] - MultiTail 5.0.1
  by Folkert van Heusden (http://freshmeat.net/users/fvh/)
  Thu, Apr 26th 2007 11:25

System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring
Utilities

About: MultiTail lets you view one or multiple files like the original
tail program. The difference is that it creates multiple windows on your
console (with ncurses). Merging of 2 or more log files is possible. It can
also use colors while displaying the log files (through regular
expressions) for faster recognition of what is important. It can also
filter lines (again with regular expressions). It has interactive menus
for editing given regular expressions and deleting and adding windows. One
can also have windows with the output of shell scripts and other software.
When viewing the output of external software, MultiTail can mimic the
functionality of tools like 'watch'.

Changes: A segfault in the 'find' code has been fixed. --mergeall would
merge all the following files into the previous window. This may be
unwanted, so '--mergeall-new' has been added, which creates a new window
in which all the following files up to --no-mergeall are merged.
Conversion schemes/color schemes selection would fail if no schemes were
defined in the config file. On certain terminals one needs to explicitly
set the background color to be usable. Version 5.0.0 always remembered the
last search string; this can now be turned off in the config file. Major
bugs on the (IBM) AIX platform have been fixed.

Development)
  by Moritz Barsnick (http://freshmeat.net/users/barsnick/)
  Thu, Apr 26th 2007 11:17

About: VMware allows you to run 'virtual machines' inside a Linux host. It
is not an emulator. It provides a virtual computer within the host which
can boot whichever OS you decide to put on the filesystem image that is
used as a harddrive. It will run DOS 6.22, Win 3.1, Win9x,
WinNT/2000/XP/2003, Linux, Novell, and more. The only main requirement is
a 400 MHz or better machine, along with lots of RAM (128M minimum, 256M
recommended).

Changes: ACE authoring capabilities were introduced. This release
candidate runs faster due to the omission of debug code.
