Games/Entertainment
Software Development :: Libraries

About: Alpy provides Python bindings to the Allegro game programming
library.

Changes: Experimental Windows precompiled binary support. Basic support
for AllegroGL 0.4.x in an extra module named aglpy. tostring() and
fromstring() methods in the Bitmap class for converting to and from raw
strings for use with other libraries (PIL, pyopengl, etc.). topil() and
frompil() methods for converting to and from PIL images. The Python
Imaging Library is only required if these methods are called. All examples
have been changed to use allegro_message and be GUI friendly, plus other
minor bugfixes. AlpyError has been replaced with the correct AlpyException
in the documentation.

[002] - appctl 1.13
  by Rainer Meier (http://freshmeat.net/users/skybeam/)
  Sun, Apr 29th 2007 07:57

System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Software Distribution
Utilities

About: Appctl is a framework for virtually any server software. It
provides a central script called "ctl" which allows you to start, stop,
restart, maintain, or query the current status of an application. It is
meant as a completely generic replacement for application-specific
startup/stop scripts. The project also supplies generic monitoring scripts
for clusters, which can dramatically decrease clustering costs.

Changes: This release fixes the Linux status message printout where the
PID was omitted from the printout. This does not affect the functionality
at all; only the output text has been fixed.

About: Areca is a file backup system that supports data compression (zip /
zip64 format) and encryption, incremental backups, FTP file transfer, a
file history explorer, and many other features. It includes a transaction
mechanism, which guarantees the integrity of your backups. Two user
interfaces are available: a command-line interface (useful for backup
automation) and a graphical user interface (useful for backup
administration).

Changes: This version adds FTPS (FTP over SSL/TLS) storage. Both explicit
and implicit modes are supported.

manager where windows are almost always fullscreen maximized or tiled. It
can be driven using the keyboard alone or with the mouse.

Changes: A configuration file is read at startup for tweaking. Some new
bindings were added (like stop all pending actions and open all future
windows in a new group (i.e. like other window managers)). A hook system
was added to tweak all X11 events if needed (like a map window). Some
minor bugs were fixed (unclutter is now usable, for example).

[012] - Dnsmasq 2.39
  by Simon Kelley (http://freshmeat.net/users/simonkelley/)
  Sun, Apr 29th 2007 13:29

Internet :: Name Service (DNS)

About: Dnsmasq is a lightweight, easy to configure DNS forwarder and DHCP
server. It is designed to provide DNS and (optionally) DHCP to a small
network. It can serve the names of local machines which are not in the
global DNS. The DHCP server integrates with the DNS server and allows
machines with DHCP-allocated addresses to appear in the DNS with names
configured either in each host or in a central configuration file. Dnsmasq
supports static and dynamic DHCP leases and BOOTP/TFTP for network booting
of diskless machines.

Changes: This release adds some features to the log subsystem: it is now
possible to log directly to a file, and to log asynchronously to syslog.
More detailed logging of DHCP transactions is available. DHCP options can
now be specified by name instead of by number. DHCP configuration can now
use information from a DHCP relay agent. There are a few minor bugfixes
(notably failure of TFTP with --listen-address). Some translations have
been updated.

[015] - dtrx 4.0
  by Brett Smith (http://freshmeat.net/users/bretts/)
  Sun, Apr 29th 2007 17:04

About: dtrx intelligently extracts many different archive types. It will
get the contents from tar, zip, rpm, deb, and cpio archives, as well as
compressed files, with one simple command. It helps keep your filesystem
sane by putting every archive's contents into a dedicated directory, and
making sure the owner can read and write whatever's extracted. It can even
recursively extract archives.

Changes: dtrx is now interactive. If an archive has unusual contents — for
example, it only contains one item — this release will ask you how you
would like to handle it. You can turn these questions off with the -n
option. If you just want to see what's in an archive, rather than
extracting it, you can now do that with the -l option.

About: eKitaab is an eBook Catalog Manager to manage large collections of
ebooks. eKitaab is not an eBook reader. eKitaab displays a list of all
books you have, with their titles, authors, descriptions, and photos of
the book covers. It also shows if you have read that book before or not.
eKitaab downloads all this information from the Internet, based on the
ISBN of the book, or by searching by author or title. eKitaab is designed
to be extremely safe for the eBooks; the eBooks themselves are never
changed.

Changes: An Authors filter was added. A "checkout" feature was added. A
split-pane was added in the main window. The project build settings were
downgraded so this can be run with Java 1.4 as well, instead of 1.5 and
above. A bug was fixed where files from the root folder would not load,
only sub-folders would load. The build was corrected to see the proxy and
about box changes. Other miscellaneous bugs were fixed.

Desktop Environment :: K Desktop Environment (KDE)
Utilities

About: KThinkBat is a laptop battery monitor for the KDE-Kicker. It is
inspired by the "Battery Maximizer" included with Levono (former IBM)
ThinkPads. Although there are allready some battery monitor applications
for the K-Desktop Environment, they ar mostly too small to see the current
battery charge at a glance. Features include display of current battery
strength as a percentage, and visually as a gauge, display of the current
online/offline state, and display of current power consumption. It has
support for a second battery. On ThinkPads, it can use the SMAPI BIOS
interface.

Changes: Beside more complete translation, this version deals with laptops
whose batteries don't provided correct power consumption values. On those
laptops, older KThinkBat versions didn't calculate reliable remaining time
information. All users with ACPI or SMAPI-based batteries should be able to
use all features of this release.

[031] - Nixstaller 0.2.2
  by Rick (http://freshmeat.net/users/rickhelmus/)
  Sun, Apr 29th 2007 04:36

System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Software Distribution

About: With 'nixstaller' you can easily make installers for Unix-like
systems. Some of the project goals: support for many different platforms,
support for different (optional) frontends used by the installer
(currently FLTK, ncurses, GTK 2, and Qt are planned), ease of use for the
install creator and the end user, different ways of installing (extract
files to a location, compile software on the user's system, and maybe even
integration for the package manager running on the user's system).
Nixstaller can be fully translated and is programmed in C++ and sh.

Changes: This release fixes several small bugs: startupinstaller.sh would
not sort files, geninstall.sh didn't check given commandline arguments
anymore, and quotes were missing in startupinstaller.sh. This release
supports a way of choosing frontends: instead of trying to find available
C/C++ system libraries, each frontend is checked with ldd for missing
libraries.

Communications
Communications :: Chat
Communications :: Conferencing

About: SILC (Secure Internet Live Conferencing) is a protocol which
provides secure conferencing services in the Internet. It can be used to
send any kind of messages, in addition to normal text messages. This
includes multimedia messages like images, video, and audio stream. All
messages in the SILC network are encrypted and authenticated, and messages
can also be digitally signed. SILC protocol supports AES, SHA-1, PKCS#1,
PKCS#3, X.509, OpenPGP, and is being developed in the IETF. The software
is delivered as SILC Client for end users, SILC Server for system
administrators, and SILC Toolkit for application developers.

Changes: This release fixes a small problem with parsing the 1.3 protocol
version string correctly. Clients that conform to the 1.3 protocol will
not be able to connect to a SILC server that isn't running this version.

[040] - sysstat 7.1.4
  by Sébastien Godard (http://freshmeat.net/users/godard/)
  Sun, Apr 29th 2007 13:17

System :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration

About: The sysstat package contains the sar, sadf, iostat, and mpstat
commands for Linux. The sar command collects and reports system activity
information. The information collected by sar can be saved in a file in a
binary format for future inspection. The statistics reported by sar
concern I/O transfer rates, paging activity, process-related activites,
interrupts, network activity, memory and swap space utilization, CPU
utilization, kernel activities, and TTY statistics, among others. The sadf
command may be used to display data collected by sar in various formats
(XML, database-friendly, etc.). The iostat command reports CPU statistics
and I/O statistics for tty devices and disks. The pidstat command reports
statistics for Linux tasks (processes). The mpstat command reports global
and per-processor statistics. Both UP and SMP machines are fully
supported. Sysstat has support for hotplug CPUs and for National Language
(NLS).

Changes: The addition of a new command "pidstat" aimed at displaying
per-process statistics. The option -N has been added to iostat, which
enables the user to query any device-mapper devices for their registered
device name (useful for viewing LVM2 statistics). A small memory leak in
the readp_uptime() function has been fixed. iostat -t now also takes into
account the value of the environment variable S_TIME_FORMAT.
