  Sat, Jun 9th 2007 23:41

Desktop Environment :: File Managers
Desktop Environment :: Gnome
Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

About: GNOME Commander is a fast and powerful graphical filemanager. It
has a "two-pane" interface in the tradition of Norton and Midnight
Commander. It features drag'n'drop, GNOME MIME types, FTP using the
GnomeVFS ftp module, SAMBA access, the ability to extend the context menu
with entries to call external applications or scripts on the selected
items, quick device access buttons with automatic mounting and unmounting,
a fast file viewer for text and images, a history of recently accessed
folders, and folder bookmarks.

Changes: This release (apart from the usual bunch of fixes) adds support
for Python scripting, user defined keyboard shortcuts, OLE and ODF
metatags in advanced file rename templates, and SAMBA authentication. More
work was done on the following translations: ar, bg, cs, dz, en_GB, fr, it,

[013] - gpgdir 1.3
  by Michael Rash (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelrash/)
  Sat, Jun 9th 2007 23:17

Security :: Cryptography

About: gpgdir is a Perl script that uses the CPAN GnuPG module to encrypt
and decrypt directories using a GPG key specified in ~/.gpgdirrc. It
supports recursively descending through a directory in order to make sure
it encrypts or decrypts every file in a directory and all of its
subdirectories. All file mtime and atime values are preserved across
encryption and decryption operations. In addition, gpgdir is careful not
to encrypt hidden files and directories.

Changes: --Obfuscate mode was added so that the files within a directory
can be altered into unrecognizable names (which are stored within the file
gpgdir_map_file within each sub-directory, and this file is itself
encrypted). The obfuscated file names are reversed when a directory is
decrypted. The --Agent-info command line argument was added so that the
value of the GPG_AGENT_INFO environment variable can be specified on the
gpgdir command line.

  Sat, Jun 9th 2007 06:02

About: GWintree is a GEDCOM-based genealogy program. It provides
facilities to view, edit, and merge data, and to produce charts, family
trees, and reports in a range of formats, including HTML. Charts can show
all relatives, ancestors only, or descendants only. HTML charts allow you
to click on a person in your HTML report to see where they are on the
chart. Automatic matching and merging of data is supported.

Changes: This release adds support for Web pages (users can produce charts
in HTML and click on a person in the report to see where they are on the
chart), adds a range of formats for charts (including SVG, LaTeX, and
RTF), adds facilities for automatic matching and merging of GEDCOM data,
and expands report facilities, support for lists of data, automatic backup
facilities, and support for character set conversions.

About: JavaOp is a cross-platform, flexible, plugin-oriented Battle.net

an InvalidVersion exception (which is caught, of course) if the product is
STAR, SEXP, or W2BN. This allows D2DV D2XP, WAR3, and W3XP to hash locally,
although they will need their local hashing information updated.

[028] - Safe and SafeDesktop 2.1
  by daywalker (http://freshmeat.net/users/ddaayywallkkkeeeer/)
  Sat, Jun 9th 2007 23:38

About: The idea behind Safe is that a user need not remember all her login
names and passwords. Instead, the user utilizes her cell phone to store
sensitive data in an encrypted way. Only one root password is required to
be remembered to get access to the data. The cell phone in question needs
to support J2ME applications. SafeDesktop is a cross-platform desktop
application that provides the same features as Safe, and has a mechanism
to keep the data synchronized between the two.

Changes: Exception handling was added. In case of an error, error messages
are shown to the user. An icon was added.

[031] - Syslinux 3.50 (Release)
  by H. Peter Anvin (http://freshmeat.net/users/hpa/)
  Sat, Jun 9th 2007 23:59

System :: Boot

About: SYSLINUX is a collection of boot loaders for the Linux operating
system which operates on Linux EXT2/EXT3 filesystems, MS-DOS FAT
filesystems, network servers using PXE firmware, or from CD-ROMs. SYSLINUX
has an advanced extension API and contains two optional menu systems. It
also includes MEMDISK, a tool for booting legacy operating systems from
non-traditional media like PXE or CD-ROM.

Changes: This is a major new feature release that includes the ability to
chainload a new configuration file at runtime, possibly from a custom
module. A new "RAID mode" makes booting from RAID-1 more reliable. A
number of new APIs have been added to make the writing of custom modules
easier. There are a number of other enhancements to the menu system, as
well as support for the "include" directive in the configuration file.

[032] - sysstat 7.1.5
  by Sébastien Godard (http://freshmeat.net/users/godard/)
  Sat, Jun 9th 2007 18:29

System :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration

About: The sysstat package contains the sar, sadf, iostat, and mpstat
commands for Linux. The sar command collects and reports system activity
information. The information collected by sar can be saved in a file in a
binary format for future inspection. The statistics reported by sar
concern I/O transfer rates, paging activity, process-related activites,
interrupts, network activity, memory and swap space utilization, CPU
utilization, kernel activities, and TTY statistics, among others. The sadf
command may be used to display data collected by sar in various formats
(XML, database-friendly, etc.). The iostat command reports CPU statistics
and I/O statistics for tty devices and disks. The pidstat command reports
statistics for Linux tasks (processes). The mpstat command reports global
and per-processor statistics. Both UP and SMP machines are fully
supported. Sysstat has support for hotplug CPUs and for National Language
(NLS).

Changes: The -d option was added to pidstat: this option reports I/O
statistics for individual tasks. The -C option was added to sadc: this
option enables the user to insert a timestamped comment in the binary data
file. The -C option was added to sar: This option tells sar to display
comments inserted in the binary data file by sadc. A bug that could happen
while reading /proc/interrupts where IRQ numbers can now be 4 digits long
in recent kernels was fixed. A possible buffer overflow in ioconf.c was
fixed.
