Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players

About: AlsaPlayer is a new PCM player written with the ALSA sound system
in mind. It also includes support for JACK, OSS, NAS, and ESD. It makes
extensive use of multi-threading and supports OGG, MP3, WAV, CDDA (CD
Digital Audio), MOD, S3M, IT, and many other input types. Features include
a real- time effects stream, variable speed/pitch control,
SHOUTcast/icecast streaming support, multiple active visual scopes,
command line mode, playlists, plugin architecture, low-latency mode, and
more.

Changes: The player has now a fully working GTK2 interface. It includes
the same functionality as the GTK1 interface and some new functions (loop
song and loop playlist). The playlist window has been completely
rewritten, and is inside the main window. The scopes plugins have been
migrated. A lot of debugging has been done. All users are encouraged to
upgrade and to use the GTK2 interface.

  Mon, Jun 11th 2007 04:47

Communications :: File Sharing
Information Management
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: Ampache is a Web-based audio file manager. It allows you to view,
edit, and play your audio files via the Web. It has support for playlists,
artist and album views, album art, random play, playback via HTTP with
on-the-fly transcoding and downsampling, vote based playback, playback via
MPD and Icecast, an integrated Flash player, and per-user themes and song
play tracking. You can also link multiple Ampache servers together using
XML-RPC. Ampache supports gettext translations and has full translations
into many languages.

Changes: This release adds LastFM album art searching. Album Art dump and
Folder Art gathering were improved by allowing for wildcards in the
filename. An issue with some configurations of PHP that generate session
IDs that are greater than 32 chars (non-MD5) was fixed. Numerous other
minor bugs were fixed.

[004] - Attal: Lords of Doom 1.0-rc1
  by lusum (http://freshmeat.net/users/lusum/)
  Mon, Jun 11th 2007 06:56

About: Attal is a turn-based strategy game. You can play it in stand-alone
mode (against an AI) or against other human players through a network. This
game is open and themeable in order to allow new graphics, new rules, new
campaigns, and new scenarios. A scenario editor and a theme editor are
provided.

Changes: The graphical engine was improved. The code was ported to the new
Qt graphic engine. New graphics were added for bases and units. New
scenarios were added. The server and AI were integrated in the client, so
local games no longer need any program other than attal-client. Lots of
new features were added. At least Qt 4.2.0 is required. A lot of bugs were
fixed.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: The Avis client library is a Java API for clients accessing Elvin
event routers, including the open source Avis event router and the
commercial Mantara Elvin product. It fulfills the same role as Mantara's
"je4" library, but is a more modern Java 5 API.

Changes: This release contains many improvements and general
solidification of the API, including a few changes incompatible with the
previous release. Programming examples have been added to make getting
started easier.

[006] - Cairo 1.4.8
  by Moritz Barsnick (http://freshmeat.net/users/barsnick/)
  Mon, Jun 11th 2007 10:56

Software Development :: Libraries

About: Cairo is a vector graphics library with cross-device output
support. It currently supports the X Window System and in-memory image
buffers as output targets. It is designed to produce identical output on
all output media while taking advantage of display hardware acceleration
when available (eg. through the X Render Extension). It provides a
stateful user-level API with capabilities similar to the PDF 1.4 imaging
model and provides operations including stroking and filling Bezier cubic
splines, transforming and compositing translucent images, and antialiased
text  rendering.

Changes: A surface cache for solid patterns was introduced, dramatically
improving performance. Error handling paths were improved, making cairo
much more robust against out-of-memory and other errors. Several other
fixes were made.

[007] - Citadel 7.10
  by Art Cancro (http://freshmeat.net/users/ajc/)
  Mon, Jun 11th 2007 13:58

Communications :: BBS
Communications :: Chat
Communications :: Email

About: Citadel is an advanced messaging and collaboration system for
groupware and BBS applications. Users can connect to Citadel using any
telnet, WWW, or client software. Among the features supported are public
and private message bases (rooms), electronic mail, real-time chat,
paging, shared calendaring, address books, mailing lists, and more. Unlike
other collaboration servers, Citadel provides its own data stores and is
therefore extremely easy to install; you don't have to "bring your own"
email and database because they're built in. The server is multithreaded
and scalable. In addition, SMTP, IMAP, and POP3 servers are built-in for
easy connection to Internet mail. Citadel is both robust and mature; it
has been in production since 1987.

Changes: IMAP ACL support. Small enhancements to the calendar service.
Enhanced support for certain text-mode mobile devices.

[008] - COllaborative DEvelopment SHell 0.8.0
  by Trump Coup (http://freshmeat.net/users/bourilkov/)
  Mon, Jun 11th 2007 13:52

About: The CODESH (COllaborative DEvelopment SHell) project provides an
automatic persistent logbook for sessions of personal command line work
by recording what and how is being done, for private use/reuse and for
sharing selected parts with collaborators. It is an intelligent shell
that automatically logs a user's command line (shell) session: commands,
scripts executed, output produced, changes to environment variables, alias
creation, and other information needed to recreate the session later.
Sessions are uniquely tagged and stored in local or distributed backend
repositories and can be extracted and reproduced at any time by the user
who created the session or by collaborators located anywhere in the world.

Changes: This release introduces a new persistent backend for virtual
sessions, based just on flat (mostly ASCII) files, and the corresponding
new module codeshbascii.py. Now the user has a clear choice between a CVS
backend, a flat file (ASCII) backend (thus avoiding the CVS dependency),
or no backend at all. The protection of repository commands has been
improved. Now they are executed only after a check that the repository
specified by the user is alive and operational. The verification of
user-supplied command line parameters has been improved.

  Mon, Jun 11th 2007 10:59

Communications :: Chat
Games/Entertainment
Games/Entertainment :: Multi-User Dungeons (MUD)

About: DutchPIPE allows Web developers to make virtual multi-user "avatar"
environments. Each Web page becomes an abstracted environment or location
where visitors and other items on the page are visualized. This status is
retained as visitors move around. A lot of real-time interaction is
possible, resulting in persistent interactive page environments. DutchPIPE
uses AJAX and the DOM for the browser, and it works without Java, Flash,
plugins, or firewall adjustments.

Changes: DutchPIPE has moved from alpha to beta status and is now quite
stable. Changes from 0.1.3 include a powerful property/setter/getter
system, a "Coinherit" system, actions on image maps, a monetary system,
command line history, a game area showcase, a draggable objects/free
movements experiment (see others move on a page), and support for more
browsers. This release uses jQuery and offers more stability on the client
side. It is stable in memory consumption and code, and has no crashes.

About: GNU Source-highlight produces a document with syntax highlighting
when given a source file. It handles many languages, e.g., Java, C/C++,
Prolog, Perl, PHP3, Python, Flex, HTML, and other formats, e.g., ChangeLog
and log files, as source languages and HTML, XHTML, DocBook, ANSI color
escapes, LaTeX, and Texinfo as output formats. Input and output formats
can be specified with a regular expression-oriented syntax.

Changes: Some language definitions were fixed and use of sed and ctags in
makefiles has been corrected. Some memory leaks were removed. Script
languages are also inferred by checking for the env specification. Error
reporting for lang definition files was improved. A syntax for regular
expressions that permits backreferences and conditionals is now available
in language definition files. The check-regexp program was added for
checking regular expressions on the command line. The --doc option and
references for docbook output are now available. XHTML output with a
non-fixed font is now available.

message digests, HMACs, and SSL and S/MIME functionality.

Changes: This release adds m2urllib2, and a CONNECT proxy for httpslib and
m2urllib2. It adds PKey.get_modulus, X509.get_fingerprint,
X509_Name.as_der, and m2.bn_to_hex. It adds Err.peek_error_code. It fixes
m2urllib.open_https to return the response headers; otherwise, code that
relied on that would break (such as msnlib 3.5). The Twisted wrapper has
been fixed to work with BIO buffers larger than 16 kb. DSA.save_key,
DSA_.save_pub_key, and X509.check_purpose() have been fixed.

[026] - multitask 0.2.0
  by Chris Stawarz (http://freshmeat.net/users/cstawarz/)
  Mon, Jun 11th 2007 10:56

System :: Networking

About: multitask allows Python programs to use generators (a.k.a.
coroutines) to perform cooperative multitasking and asynchronous I/O.
Applications written using multitask consist of a set of cooperating tasks
that yield to a shared task manager whenever they perform a (potentially)
blocking operation, such as I/O on a socket or getting data from a queue.
The task manager temporarily suspends the task (allowing other tasks to
run in the meantime) and then restarts it when the blocking operation is
complete. Such an approach is suitable for applications that would
otherwise have to use select() and/or multiple threads to achieve
concurrency.

Changes: Child tasks now return values to their parent by raising
StopIteration with the return values as arguments.
get_default_task_manager() has been added to provide access to the default
TaskManager instance used by add() and run(). readline() has been added,
which (on Unix-like systems) is useful for doing non-blocking reads from
the stdout of a child process.

  Mon, Jun 11th 2007 13:48

System :: Networking :: LDAP
System :: Systems Administration

About: nss-ldapd is a (glibc) NSS module for doing name lookups to an LDAP
server. This module allows retrieval of information about Unix accounts,
groups, hosts, and other information from an LDAP directory. It is a fork
from the nss_ldap module to do some architectural changes. This
implementation splits the functionality into an NSS part and a local
daemon to do the lookups. This works around a number of problems in the
original implementation.

Changes: This release brings a lot of code cleanups and improvements,
eliminating a lot of gcc warnings and implementing better structuring of
code. A bug in the netgroup lookup code was fixed, and a timeout mechanism
for communication between the client and server has been set up. Work is

[054] - Web100 2.5.15 (Stable)
  by imipak (http://freshmeat.net/users/imipak/)
  Mon, Jun 11th 2007 04:44

Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Networking
System :: Operating System Kernels

About: The Web100 project was created to produce a complete host-software
environment that will run common TCP applications at 100% of the available
bandwidth, regardless of the magnitude of a network's capability. Web100
has endowed TCP with better instrumentation. This instrumentation is the
foundation for both the TCP autotuning performed in process-level code and
the process- level tools designed to locate bottlenecks within the
following major subsystems: the sending application, the sending OS, the
Internet path, the receiving OS, and the receiving application.
Measurement tools have also been built on this instrumentation to display
performance indicators to end-users, as well as provide internal
diagnostics for network and system administrators.

Changes: This version was updated to Linux 2.6.21.

System :: Networking

About: The WendzelNNTPd is a tiny, easy to configure NNTP server for Unix,
Linux, and Windows. The server is IPv6-ready, only supports the most
important NNTP commands, is very secure, and uses an SQL backend.

Changes: Support for -fstack-protector was added. The openssl/libssl check
in the configure script was removed since it is not needed there. The
syntax of the configuration file was modified. A new configuration command
"port" was added to specify the TCP port on which to listen.

Software Development :: Libraries

About: Xapian is a search engine library, scalable to collections
containing hundreds of millions of documents. It's written in C++ with
bindings for Perl, Python, PHP, Java, Tcl, C#, and Ruby. It is a highly
adaptable toolkit that allows developers to easily add advanced indexing
and search facilities to their own applications. It supports the
Probabilistic Information Retrieval model and also a rich set of boolean
query operators. Omega is a Web search application built upon the Xapian
library. It can index a Web server's document tree (including HTML, PDF,
OpenOffice, MS Word/Excel/Powerpoint/Works, WordPerfect, RTF, PS, etc.),
or data exported from arbitrary sources (e.g. SQL databases).

Changes: This release fixes several bugs, and improves performance in a
few places. The example programs have been overhauled, and some
improvements made to the documentation.
