Software Development :: User Interfaces
About: Aejaks is a windowing toolkit for rapid development of AJAX-enabled
Web applications. It combines the powerful simplicity of the Tcl language
with the Java-based Echo2 browser-independent windowing system. Aejaks
applications are written in a single scripting language, without need to
write any HTML, Javascript, or CSS. It borrows from the Tk windowing
system, but is not directly compatible with Tk. It runs on top of any Java
Web server, and can make use of any existing Java library.

Communications :: File Sharing
Information Management
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
About: Ampache is a Web-based audio file manager. It allows you to view,
edit, and play your audio files via the Web. It has support for playlists,
artist and album views, album art, random play, playback via HTTP with
on-the-fly transcoding and downsampling, vote based playback, playback via
MPD and Icecast, an integrated Flash player, and per-user themes and song
play tracking. You can also link multiple Ampache servers together using
XML-RPC. Ampache supports gettext translations and has full translations
into many languages.
Changes: This release fixes the LastFM plugin, which broke due to a chance
in the LastFM handshake format. A fatal error on the genre display page was
fixed along with some cataloging corrections for Unknown (Orphaned) albums.
A serious bug with the Albums of the moment that could cause an endless
loop in very specific conditions has also been fixed.

Software Development
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
About: The Azuki Framework is a Java application framework designed to
resolve various problems in the software development lifecycle. These
goals are achieved by splitting the software conception into two main
stages: creation of independent components and definition of component
dependencies (weaving). The latter is performed with a graphical tool
named "the weaver". By representing component interactions using different
perspectives, the weaver provides a straightforward way to analyze an
application's architecture, allowing deep and easy customization of its
behavior.

About: The Big Faceless PDF Library is a Java class library for creating
PDF documents. The Extended Edition offers the ability to create and edit
AcroForms, PDF's answer to the HTML form. Like HTML forms, PDF forms can
contain text boxes, radio buttons, and can call JavaScript functions. The
Extended Edition also includes a PDF reader for importing and editing,
along with FDF support, verification for digital signatures and text
extraction. Both variations offer full Unicode support, encryption,
embedded TrueType and Type1 fonts, barcodes, hyperlinks, and spot and
calibrated color.
Changes: The Jar was split into three parts: "bfopdf.jar",
"bfopdf-cmap.jar", and "bfopdf-qrcode.jar". A pack200 compressed Jar
"bfopdf.jar.pack.gz" is supplied for JWS and Applet use, along with a
sample "bfopdf.jnlp" file for Java Web Start. Public key support was
updated to work with the Sun JCE and AES encryption or unencrypted
metadata. More fixes were made for when moving objects between PDFs,
catching a number of RF1 warnings and a potential
ConcurrentModificationException in render().

Last.fm XML-RPC backend was ported to the current Last.fm XML-RPC API.
Various fixes in the Podcast backend, the general playback backend
(GStreamer engine), and the library backend/database were made.
Preliminary support for Jamendo was added. The MusicBrainz backend was
mostly rewritten, now more sensibly parsing and applying MusicBrainz
metadata to tracks. A lot of various fixes all over the code have been
done.

System :: Archiving
About: cdrtools (formerly cdrecord) creates home-burned CDs/DVDs with a
CDR/CDRW/DVD recorder. It works as a burn engine for several applications.
It supports CD/DVD recorders from many different vendors; all SCSI-3/mmc-
and ATAPI/mmc-compliant drives should also work. Supported features
include IDE/ATAPI, parallel port, and SCSI drives, audio CDs, data CDs,
and mixed CDs, full multi-session support, CDRWs (rewritable), DVD-R/-RW,
DVD+R/+RW, TAO, DAO, RAW, and human-readable error messages. cdrtools
includes remote SCSI support and can access local or remote CD/DVD
writers.
Changes: Mkisofs now sets up the input character set from the locale. SCSI
send permission problems with USCSI and Solaris are detected and correctly
handled. "cdrecord -pad cue=file" now works as people expect. Linux 2.6.8
warnings are printed only if there really was a problem. The Blu Ray
driver now supports "cdrecord -atip" to read manufacturer IDs. DVD writing
works again. Introducing Blu Ray with 2.01.01a29 did cause problems with
DVDs.

About: DUMA (Detect Unintended Memory Access) stops your program on the
exact instruction that overruns (or underruns) a malloc() memory buffer.
GDB will then display the source-code line that causes the bug. It works
by using the virtual-memory hardware to create a red-zone at the border of
each buffer: touch that, and your program stops. It can catch formerly
impossible-to-catch overrun bugs. DUMA is a fork of Bruce Perens' Electric
Fence library.
Changes: Many changes were made for the Win32 platform including Detours
support for using DUMA with just binaries. Support for posix_memalign() on
Linux/Unix was added.

collect responses to surveys. Once a survey has been created, data can be
inserted into the survey either by a "pretty" public screen which presents
each question one at a time, or by a quick and nasty data entry screen. It
includes the capacity to generate individualized "tokens", so that
invitations can be issued to participants. It also has the capacity to set
conditions on whether questions will display (branching), numerous question
types, and a basic statistics function.

[040] - Lucene Image REtrieval 0.5.4
by Mathias (http://freshmeat.net/users/motte/)
Tue, Jul 10th 2007 04:09
Multimedia :: Graphics
Scientific/Engineering :: Image Recognition
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
About: The LIRE (Lucene Image REtrieval) library provides a simple way to
create a Lucene index of image features for content-based image retrieval
(CBIR), which allows searching for similar images. The used features are
taken from the MPEG-7 standard: ScalableColor, ColorLayout, and
EdgeHistogram. Furthermore, methods for searching the index are provided.
Changes: An issue where the scalable color descriptor (color histogram)
was not compliant to the MPEG-7 standard was fixed. The color only search
was changed to use the color layout descriptor and a bug in the edge
histogram descriptor was hunted down. The LireDemo GUI application has
also been updated: A new function for creating image mosaics has been
introduced and the indexing of digital photos is now faster than ever as
only the EXIF thumbnails - if available - are used instead of the whole
image.

[043] - MirBSD Korn Shell R29g
by mirabile (http://freshmeat.net/users/mirabile/)
Tue, Jul 10th 2007 01:15
System :: Shells
About: The MirBSD Korn Shell (mksh) is an actively developed successor of
pdksh (the Public Domain Korn Shell), aimed at producing a shell good for
interactive use, but with primary focus on scripting. It is intended to be
portable to most *nix-like operating systems as long as they're not too
obscure. mksh incorporates improvements from OpenBSD and Debian, as well
as bugfixes and enhancements developed for the MirOS and FreeWRT projects.
The emacs command line editing mode is UTF-8 capable, and Byte Order Marks
are ignored in scripts. The shell supports large files, as well as all
pdksh and some csh, AT&T ksh, and GNU bash features, is compatible with
the Bourne shell and POSIX (within limits, but you can turn off brace
expansion), has no limit on array sizes, and incorporates some other
useful builtins and features. While being already fast and small (without
losing functionality), flags to make it even smaller can be given at
compile time. An interactive shell reads "~/.mkshrc" on startup.
Changes: Large file support was fixed (on GNU/Linux mostly) and a few
minor bugfixes and improvements were merged from mksh-current. No changes
were made to the interface or build system (for packagers).

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
About: QjackCtl is a simple Qt application to control the JACK sound
server daemon, specifically for the Linux Audio Desktop infrastructure. It
is written in C++ around the Qt4 toolkit for X11, most exclusively using Qt
Designer. It provides a simple GUI dialog for setting several JACK daemon
parameters, which are properly saved between sessions, and a way to
control of the status of the audio server daemon. With time, this
primordial interface has become richer by including an enhanced patchbay
and connection control features.
Changes: Many subtle bugs were fixed, but the main focus of this release
is that Qt4 migration was completed. The "firewire" audio backend driver
option is included.

[067] - rsyslog 1.15.1 (Development)
by Rainer Gerhards (http://freshmeat.net/users/rgerhards/)
Tue, Jul 10th 2007 10:58
System :: Logging
About: Rsyslog is an enhanced multi-threaded syslogd. Among other
features, it offers support for reliable syslog over TCP and RFC 3195,
writing to MySQL databases, fully configurable output formats (including
great timestamps), the ability to filter on any part of the syslog
message, and on-the-wire message compression. It is designed as a drop-in
replacement for stock syslogd and thus is able to work with the same
configuration file syntax. Of course, some enhanced features require
changing the configuration file, but in general, this should be fairly
easy.
Changes: This version is primarily a stability release. Most importantly,
the "last message repeated n times" functionality found in stock sysklogd
has been re-enabled. It was lost during some modifications. A bug was
fixed that caused a dynamic file name selector line to become inoperable
when a file could not be opened. In order to better take care of dynamic
files, a number of properties for the current date/time have been added
(e.g. $YEAR and $MONTH). Some minor bugs were also fixed. This release is
a recommended update for all users.

Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Interpreters
About: Seed7 is a general purpose programming language. It is a higher
level language compared to Ada, C++, and Java. In Seed7, new statements
and operators can be declared easily. Functions with type results and type
parameters are more elegant than a template or generics concept. Object
orientation is used when it brings advantages and not in places when other
solutions are more obvious. Although Seed7 contains several concepts of
other programming languages, it is generally not considered as a direct
descendant of any other programming language.
Changes: The compiler (comp.sd7) support for different C compilers was
improved. Support for socket send and recv was added to the compiler. A
description of openInetSocket was added to the documentation. A pos
function and the "not in" operator were added for the type ref_list. The
var_conv operator was renamed to varConv. Some setters (setCategory,
setValue, setParams) were added to the reflection. The classtype of the
interpreter was renamed to categorytype since it has nothing to do with
classes.
