[001] - Bacula 2.1.28 (Development)
by Lev_Arris (http://freshmeat.net/users/LevArris/)
Fri, Jul 20th 2007 14:33
System :: Archiving :: Backup
About: Bacula is a set of programs that allow you to manage the backup,
recovery, and verification of computer data across a network of different
computers. It is based on a client/server architecture and is efficient
and relatively easy to use, while offering many advanced storage
management features that make it easy to find and recover lost or damaged
files.
Changes: Starting with this release, the Win32 version can no longer be
shutdown from the tray monitor. A bug in the Win32 installer and FD client
were fixed, and ./configure now does a better job at finding the qwt
libraries (needed for bat).

[003] - cryptmount 2.1beta1 (Testing)
by rwpenney (http://freshmeat.net/users/rwpenney/)
Fri, Jul 20th 2007 10:28
Security :: Cryptography
System :: Filesystems
About: cryptmount assists system administrators in setting up encrypted
filesystems based on the device mapper (dm-crypt) of GNU/Linux systems
using a 2.6-series kernel. After initial setup, it allows any user to
mount or unmount filesystems on demand, solely by providing the decryption
password, with any system devices needed to access the filing system being
configured automatically. A wide variety of encryption schemes (provided
by the kernel and OpenSSL library) can be used to protect both the filing
system and the access key. The protected filing systems can reside in
either ordinary files or disk partitions. The package also supports
encrypted swap partitions, and automatic configuration on system boot-up.
Changes: A tool for setting up encrypted filesystems was added. Support
for reading/writing OpenSSL key files via libgcrypt was added. Facilities
for translating between key files stored in different formats was added.
Support for improved dismantling of loopback filesystems during system
shutdown was added.

Fri, Jul 20th 2007 10:22
Multimedia :: Graphics
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Presentation
Multimedia :: Video
About: image2mpeg is a tool to convert digital photos (or any other
images) into MPEG video streams, with transitions between the images. The
photo stream may be accompanied with music (or any other audio stream).
The resulting slideshow may be prepared for VCD, SVCD, or DVD playback in
stand-alone players, or the MPEG videos may be converted into FLV (Flash
Videos). The type of transition can be selected for each image separately
from a set of fade, slide, roll, etc.
Changes: Support for a 16:9 aspect ratio (and support for any aspect
ratio, if ffmpeg is used as the encoder). Smarter aspect correction
support. Image scaling is now done using Gaussian Filter for better
quality, and the Point Filter is used for low quality (in quick mode). The
geometry processing (including Ken-Burns-Effect) is no longer disabled in
quick mode, but input images are scaled down to speed things up. image2ppm
is now directly piped into ffmpeg; with this optimization, ppmtoy4m is no
longer needed. Some small memory leaks have been fixed, and there are some
code improvements.

[018] - massXpert mass spectrometry package 1.6.3
by filippo rusconi (http://freshmeat.net/users/FilippoRusconi/)
Fri, Jul 20th 2007 14:28
Education
Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics
Scientific/Engineering :: Chemistry
About: The massXpert software package is a mass spectrometry environment
for linear (bio-)polymers. It inherits all the innovations of GNU
polyxmass. It allows the detailed definition of new polymer chemistries in
the XpertDef module. These chemistry definitions are then used in the
desktop calculator-like mass calculator (XpertCalc) and in the
sophisticated polymer sequence editor and (bio-)chemical/mass
spectrometric simulations module (XpertEdit). Available simulations
include polymer and monomer chemical modifications, polymer sequence
cleavage, gas-phase fragmentation, m/z ratio calculations, and more.
Changes: This release adds the ability to modify a polymer sequence using
arbitrary formulas, not necessarily modifications from the polymer
chemistry definition. It fixes many bugs with the modifications in the
modification_dictionary file and related graphical vignettes. The code has
been updated to comply with Qt 4.3.0 on GNU/Linux. Some glitches have been
fixed in the sequence editor window. Recorder output in the calculator
window has been improved. The documentation has been greatly improved by
making it more concise and specific. The problematic MS Windows package
creation procedure should hopefully be fixed.

About: MUCLM (My Uber Cool LDAP Manager) is an AJAX Web-based LDAP
manager with a lot of features. It is designed to aid in managing large
LDAP servers.
Changes: Faster login/load time by loading editors on the fly and async
schema caching. Closing an object while in the editor will automatically
open the next loaded object. Expanding tree nodes with more children than
the result limit allows will produce a notice message. By adding the
"immediate" keyword to an object template, muclm will try to simply create
a new object with the template (without allowing the user to edit and save
first). See the "Organizational Unit" template for an example.

[038] - QMC2 0.1 beta 10
by Prian (http://freshmeat.net/users/prianthefist/)
Fri, Jul 20th 2007 14:35
System :: Emulators
About: M.A.M.E. Catalog / Launcher II (also referred to as QMC2) is the
successor of one of the first XMAME GUI frontends available, QMamecat
(derived from MAMECAT, which was text-only). QMC2 has been rebuilt from
scratch as a Qt 4 project. Parts of the design and code were inspired by
its predecessor. The new design was made as flexible as possible to
minimize dependencies from frontend- and CLI-related MAME changes, which
was a major deficiency of QMamecat. QMC2 uses a template-based MAME
configuration scheme, which can easily be enhanced with additional command
line options (defined in an XML template file).
Changes: Included in this release are many new features such as image and
sample checkers, individual ROM checks, more sort criteria (year and
manufacturer), and game icon support. There are major improvements to the
build system to allow for distribution-dependent configuration and to make
it easier to use Qt libraries supplied by distributions. This release
supports Qt 4.3. However, please note that with Qt 4.3 it takes a few
seconds for QMC2 to exit.

System :: Archiving :: Backup
About: Rsyncrypto allows you to encrypt a file or a directory structure
such that they can later be synchronized to another machine using rsync.
This means that local changes to the plain text file result in local
changes to the cipher text file. rsyncrypto compresses the plain text file
prior to encrypting it with gzip using the "rsyncable" patch, which is
available from the rsync sources.
Changes: On Unix, it is now possible to encrypt a list of files where the
file list is received from standard input. Out of tree tests are now
supported.

[042] - rsyslog 1.17.1 (Development)
by Rainer Gerhards (http://freshmeat.net/users/rgerhards/)
Fri, Jul 20th 2007 04:50
System :: Logging
About: Rsyslog is an enhanced multi-threaded syslogd. Among other
features, it offers support for reliable syslog over TCP and RFC 3195,
writing to MySQL databases, fully configurable output formats (including
great timestamps), the ability to filter on any part of the syslog
message, and on-the-wire message compression. It is designed as a drop-in
replacement for stock syslogd and thus is able to work with the same
configuration file syntax. Of course, some enhanced features require
changing the configuration file, but in general, this should be fairly
easy.
Changes: IPv6 scopes are now correctly supported in $AllowedSenders. The
capability to continue trying to write log files if the file system is
full has been added. The binaries are now again named correctly. A few
minor memory leaks on HUP have been fixed. Code cleanup and modularization
continued. This is a recommended update for all users.

[043] - Rule Set Based Access Control 1.3.5 (Stable)
by frealek (http://freshmeat.net/users/frealek/)
Fri, Jul 20th 2007 04:53
Security
About: Rule Set Based Access Control (RSBAC) is a Free Software security
extension for current Linux kernels. It is based on the Generalized
Framework for Access Control (GFAC) by Abrams and LaPadula and provides a
flexible system of access control based on several modules. All security
relevant system calls are extended by security enforcement code. This code
calls the central decision component, which in turn calls all active
decision modules and generates a combined decision. This decision is then
enforced by the system call extensions.
Changes: This release relates to kernel 2.4.34.5 and 2.6.22.1. There are
important fixes with some compilation errors and an important bug with
User Management password hashing, introduced with the newer 2.6 kernel
crypto API. Some security has been added with safety measures against null
pointers.
