[002] - Alpha Shooter 0.0.2
by Nicola Cocchiaro (http://freshmeat.net/users/ncocchiaro/)
Mon, Jul 30th 2007 17:15
Games/Entertainment :: First Person Shooters
About: Alpha Shooter is a 3D OpenGL first-person shooter game with a
sci-fi setting. It features multi-platform support (Linux, Mac OS X,
CygWin, and Windows), a 3D environment built with OpenGL, GLU, and GLUT,
dynamic lighting, a shooting practice mini-game, particle and collision
detection systems, and quaternion-based rotations. It will evolve over
time to incorporate dynamic shadows, simulated physics, network support,
and more.
Changes: Microsoft Windows is now supported. An auto-leveling feature
levels the camera at the press of a key. Rotations have been revised to
include the local Z axis (when flying) and use quaternions; mouse
rotations were also fixed. Progressive mouse mode has been improved by not
using glutWarpPointer. The Makefile has been updated for Windows and Cygwin
binary releases. More error checking has been to the TGA load library, and
fseek() calls and various potential bugs have been fixed. Some controls
meant for debug (like the fog toggle) have been disabled, and a debug mode
added. The project has switched to the GPL version 3 and above.

Scientific/Engineering
Software Development :: Embedded Systems
System :: Hardware
About: amforth is an embedded Forth distribution for the the AVR Atmega
microcontroller. Once put into flash, it needs only a serial connection to
the host computer. New words are compiled directly into flash, thus
extending the dictionary immediately. It provides most of the ANS94 Forth
CORE plus some extensions. It is written in assembly language and Forth
itself. The main development uses Atmega8 and Atmega32 controllers; other
Atmega controllers work with small adjustments.
Changes: This release cleans up the code and adds some error checking for
critical routines to make the system more robust. Some code parts were
moved to other words for easier customization.

Education
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Scientific/Engineering
About: Asymptote is a powerful descriptive vector graphics language for
technical drawing, inspired by MetaPost but with an improved C++-like
syntax. It provides for figures the same high-quality level of typesetting
that LaTeX does for scientific text. Asymptote is a programming language as
opposed to just a graphics program. It can exploit the best features of
script (command-driven) and graphical user interface (GUI) methods.
High-level graphics commands are implemented in the language itself,
allowing them to be easily tailored to specific applications.
Changes: Bounding box routines for Bezier surfaces were added. Extended
for loops were documented. Page numbering of slide presentations with
stepping was fixed. Integers are now 64 bits. A projection bug in the
grid3 module was fixed. The search path order was changed. Bugs in
asy-mode.el were fixed. Texput files are removed. The framepoint and
truepoint routines work with inexact picture size estimates; a picture
scaling bug was fixed. Writing to a global file on the command line is
allowed again. Memory leaks were fixed. Large file support was added. A
segmentation fault in complement was fixed.

[007] - Blitz templates for PHP 0.4.24
by Alexey Rybak (http://freshmeat.net/users/alexeyrybak/)
Mon, Jul 30th 2007 06:07
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
About: Blitz templates is a fast PHP template engine written in C and
compiled as a PHP extension. It started as a php_templates replacement,
but developed into much more. It is based on extensible template
controllers (custom view classes in PHP) and weakly-active templates
(simple logic in HTML). Benchmarks show that it is one of the fastest
template engines for PHP, even though it's not trivial and makes Web
application closer to a smart MVC-like architecture model with maximal
separation of HTML from your code. It was designed for big high-load
Internet projects with a lot of complex presentation logic.
Changes: Repeated includes from a template will skip the parsing stage and
use the internal template cache (in previous versions this cache worked for
the controller include method only). The "Context" method was slightly
changed: now it returns the previous context path. The
getContext/get_context method was added for the same purpose. Additional
minor fixes were made, most of them related to Win32 and multi-threaded
issues. Some tests were updated and new tests were added.

by BenZ (http://freshmeat.net/users/zhaoxh/)
Mon, Jul 30th 2007 14:09
System :: Operating System :: Linux Distributions :: CD-Based
System :: Systems Administration
About: CDlinux is a CD based mini Linux distribution. It aims to be a
handy administration and rescue tool for system administrators as well as
general users. It is highly configurable, supports a wide range of
hardware (PCMCIA, SCSI, USB, etc.), and many network protocols (FTP, SSH,
NFS, SMB, DHCP, etc.). It also has good support for CJK, especially
Simplified Chinese.
Changes: This release adds support/auto-detection for more hardware. It
fixes a bug in hd/sd auto-detection, a bug in pcmciautils udev rules, and
a bug in the dhcpcd init script. Many packages were upgraded.

[009] - Conary 1.1.33 (1.1)
by Matthew Wilson (http://freshmeat.net/users/msw/)
Mon, Jul 30th 2007 14:08
Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup
About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.
Changes: A new "conary rdiff" command has been added that displays the
differences between two troves in a Conary repository. Significant
improvements have been made to HTTP proxy support. A new "searchPath"
configuration option has been added, which allows the user to specify a
group to use when searching for new packages or performing dependency
resolution. Numerous additional enhancements and bugfixes are included.

Mon, Jul 30th 2007 17:22
Other/Nonlisted Topic
Software Development
Software Development :: Embedded Systems
About: Funky is a tiny, embeddable programming language with almost
unlimited extending capabilities. It presents itself as a single class
that contains the entire interpreter. Two versions of this class exist:
Funky::Funky, a floating-point version, and Funky::Groovy, an integer
version. You can install your own functions in the language as long as
your functions take a vector of the built-in type of the interpreter and
return an instance of that built-in type (or a vector of those). Funky is
a functional programming language. As such, it treats everything as
functions, and those functions handle only one type: double in the case of
Funky::Funky, or int in the case of Funky::Groovy.
Changes: This release adds support for GCC 4.x by fixing a small error in
the declaration of a variable. It also comes with more documentation on
how to build Funky.

[064] - rsyslog 1.17.5 (Development)
by Rainer Gerhards (http://freshmeat.net/users/rgerhards/)
Mon, Jul 30th 2007 06:11
System :: Logging
About: Rsyslog is an enhanced multi-threaded syslogd. Among other
features, it offers support for reliable syslog over TCP and RFC 3195,
writing to MySQL databases, fully configurable output formats (including
great timestamps), the ability to filter on any part of the syslog
message, and on-the-wire message compression. It is designed as a drop-in
replacement for stock syslogd and thus is able to work with the same
configuration file syntax. Of course, some enhanced features require
changing the configuration file, but in general, this should be fairly
easy.
Changes: This release is a major milestone on the path to a clean output
module interface. The abstraction of doAction() is now completed. Besides
that, the release also contains some bugfixes. The focus of this release
is to attract testers, as lots of code has changed. Users of 1.17.2 and
above are advised to update. All others may do so, but it is not strongly
recommended.

[073] - Turn Watcher 1.2
by dooglio (http://freshmeat.net/users/dooglio/)
Mon, Jul 30th 2007 14:41
Games/Entertainment :: Role-Playing
About: Turn Watcher is a tool based on Dungeons & Dragons rules. It is
used to track the initiative of your players and monsters. It includes an
option to roll initiative on every round, roll will, listen, and spot, and
it has a status column that shows you the current status of your players.
When you enter a player or monster, you also enter all of its modifiers,
so the computer can take care of rolling all the dice for you. Still want
to roll initiative? You can simply order the characters with the Move Up
and Move Down options.
Changes: This release tracks spell, ability, and other effects, notifying
you when an effect expires. You can also delay the effect a number of
rounds before it kicks in. Temporary hit points are now handled, along
with hit point boosts. New combatants are inserted in correct initiative
order. There are many bugfixes.

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Graphics Conversion
About: UFRaw is a utility for converting and manipulating raw images from
digital cameras. It can be used as a stand-alone tool or as a Gimp plugin,
and images can be batch processed using the commandline interface. UFRaw
reads most existing raw formats using Dave Coffin's raw conversion utility
DCRaw, and it supports basic color management using Little CMS, allowing
the user to apply color profiles. For Nikon users, UFRaw has the advantage
that it can read the camera's tone curves. Even if you don't own a Nikon,
you can still apply a Nikon curve to your images.
Changes: This release has many new features including full color
management, cropping, rotating, scrolling, noise reduction based on
wavelet denosing, two new interpolation methods (PPG and EAHD), a
cinepaint plug-in, 21 new cameras, and much more.

[075] - upgrade.php 15
by milky (http://freshmeat.net/users/milky/)
Mon, Jul 30th 2007 23:09
Software Development :: Libraries
About: The upgrade.php script provides PHP backwards compatibility. It
does so by automatically defining workalikes for more recently introduced
PHP 5.2 or 6.0 core functions when run in an older interpreter version
(like 4.1). This allows developers or projects to safely use the more
advanced features of PHP while still supporting most applications that run
on outdated servers. It emulates over 100 core functions and the complete
FTP, ctype, GETTEXT, and mime_magic extensions, and comes with reasonable
emulations for PDO, bcmath, ODBC, and the FILTER extension.
Changes: This release includes PDO emulation for PHP 4.x. This new unified
PHP5 standard database interface prevents SQL injection exploits if you use
its prepared statements instead of error-prone string concatenation and
manual escaping. Other changes include more detailed phpDoc-style comments
in the main script, and file_put_contents() support for the file locking
flag. The emulated json_decode() function now supports Unicode escapes and
still remains five times faster than JSON.php or the Zend_Framework
decoder.

Mon, Jul 30th 2007 06:19
Desktop Environment :: Tools

Terminals
About: vlock is a program to lock one or more sessions on the Linux
console. This is especially useful for Linux machines which have multiple
users with access to the console. One user may lock his or her session(s)
while still allowing other users to use the system on other virtual
consoles. If desired, the entire console may be locked and virtual console
can be switching disabled.
Changes: vlock-grab was split into two separate tools: vlock-grab now
simply grabs the console and prevents switching. vlock-new handles
allocating a new console. As a result, vlock gains a new option "-n,--new"
for allocating a new console before locking. Manpages for all binaries were
added, and the manpage of vlock was updated. vlock-lock now supports
locking as $USER if run as root and requires the enter key to be pressed
before authentication is started.

Software Development :: Libraries
About: Vortex Library is a BEEP Core protocol implementation, following
the standard defined in RFC 3080 and RFC 3081. It has a clean and
easy-to-use API that allows you to write new application protocols very
quickly. Vortex Library has been developed within the Af-Arch project, and
it is being used at the data transport layer. However, Vortex Library can
be used independently of Af-Arch.
Changes: xml-rpc-gen was updated to make it more robust. Now the tool,
through the IDL language, allows the user to group services under the same
resource. Several bugs in the code produced were fixed. Some checks were
included to avoid marshall errors for NULL strings. Now the tool allows
the user to include user defined code that is translated into the output.
New functions were included to produce a peer certificate digest or
content digest (now with support for MD5). Two new macros were added that
allow the user to get SASL auth Id easily from a channel or connection.
Some bugs and memory leaks were fixed.
