System :: Monitoring

About: akk@da is a simple network monitoring system designed for small and
medium size computer networks. Its purpose is to quick detect system or
network faults, and to display information about detected problems for the
administrator. It is designed as a pro-active network monitor. It does not
wait for information from any agents, systems, etc. It collects
information itself every minute (you can decrease this period to as little
as 1 second if needed). Almost all services of the monitored hosts are
discovered automatically.

Changes: Some bugs have been fixed and some new functionality has been
added.

  Fri, Sep 7th 2007 13:34

System :: Operating System :: Linux Distributions

About: Himerge is a GUI for emerge (Gentoo's Portage system) written in
Haskell using gtk2hs. The main idea is to simplify browsing the entire
portage tree, and allow running the most basic and common options from the
emerge command. It also offers several handy tools, like global and local
use flags browsers, inspired by UFED (the Gentoo Linux USE flags editor).
It also uses eix (a small utility for searching ebuilds with indexing for
fast results) as a back-end command to show package information in
HTML/CSS format, so you can access a package's Web site for a quick
glance.

Changes: Tooltips have been added to the buttons' operations. There is
support for /etc/portage/ directories. There is support for calculating
the direct reverse dependencies of a package. This release will
automatically move and show the notebook pages when they are initially
created with an operation. The package search box has been improved with a
drop-down list for search history. The USE flag browser has been improved
to match the correct local use flags option for a package. Some bugs have
been fixed, and there is slight code refactoring in several functions.

  Fri, Sep 7th 2007 05:47

About: inotail is a replacement for the 'tail' program found in the base
installation of every Linux/Unix system. It makes use of the inotify
infrastructure in recent versions of the Linux kernel to speed up tailing
files in the follow mode (the '-f' option). Standard tail polls the file
every second by default, while inotail listens to special events sent by
the kernel through the inotify API to determine whether a file needs to be
reread.

[028] - libelf 0.8.10
  by Michael Riepe (http://freshmeat.net/users/tootired/)
  Fri, Sep 7th 2007 06:12

Software Development :: Libraries

About: libelf lets you read, modify or create ELF files in an
architecture-independent way. The library takes care of size and endian
issues. For example, you can process a file for SPARC processors on an
Intel-based system. This library is a clean-room rewrite of the System V
Release 4 library, and is supposed to be source code compatible with it.
It was meant primarily for porting SVR4 applications to other operating
systems, but can also be used as the basis for new applications (and as a
light-weight alternative to libbfd).

Changes: Users are now able to turn off select sanity checks that are not
compatible with other versions of libelf.

[029] - Locked Area 5.0 (Lite)
  by Neil Skirrow (http://freshmeat.net/users/skirrow/)
  Fri, Sep 7th 2007 16:46

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: Locked Area is a highly sophisticated password protection and
membership management system. It has been designed to be as secure as
possible while it still runs hands-free with no input from the Webmaster
needed. Locked Area uses Apache's .htaccess and .htpasswd along with DES
randomized salt or MD5 encryption of passwords for increased security. It
also includes a member database that lets the administrator maintain a
mailing list along with the member's area.

Changes: This release is Windows compatible. It also adds PayPal
Subscription Payments integration, allowing you to charge a monthly fee
for your secure content. Automated account expiration. Significant layout
revisions and features. Improvements in both the registration system and
administration panel. An improved automated upgrade facility and a new
installer, resolving common installation issues.

[030] - MirBSD Korn Shell R31
  by mirabile (http://freshmeat.net/users/mirabile/)
  Fri, Sep 7th 2007 17:11

System :: Shells

About: The MirBSD Korn Shell (mksh) is an actively developed successor of
pdksh (the Public Domain Korn Shell), aimed at producing a shell good for
interactive use, but with the primary focus on scripting. It is intended
to be portable to most *nix-like operating systems as long as they're not
too obscure. mksh incorporates improvements from OpenBSD and Debian, as
well as bugfixes and enhancements developed for the MirOS, FreeWRT, and
MidnightBSD projects. The emacs command line editing mode is UTF-8
capable, and Byte Order Marks are ignored in scripts. The shell supports
large files, as well as all pdksh and some csh, AT&T ksh, and GNU bash
features, is compatible with the Bourne shell and POSIX (within limits),
has no limit on array sizes, and incorporates some other useful builtins
and features. While being already fast and small (without losing
functionality), flags to make it even smaller can be given at compile
time. An interactive shell reads "~/.mkshrc" on startup.

Changes: This release supports building with TenDRA and Fabrice Bellard's
tcc, improves some mirtoconf checks so availability of, for example,
mknod() is checked more reliably, fixes the OpenBSD port, supports
MidnightBSD, adds the new Emacs binding ESC ^L (clear-screen), and adds
the commands "source" (like the dot command, but with just the current
working directory searched, like GNU bash), "rename" (an absolutely
minimal version of mv, for rescue purposes), and "set ±o arc4random" (for
controlling what algorithm is used to produce $RANDOM numbers).

About: MUSCLE (Multi User Server Client Linking Environment) is an N-way
messaging server and networking API. It includes client-side networking
APIs for various languages, including C, C++, C#, Delphi, Java, and
Python. MUSCLE lets programs communicate over a network via streams of
serialized Message objects. The included server program ("muscled") lets
its clients message each other and store information in its server-side
hierarchical database. The database supports flexible queries via
hierarchical wildcarding, and "live" updates via a subscription mechanism.

Changes: This version adds optional IPv6 support, support for accepting

System :: Archiving
System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Archiving :: Mirroring

About: Partimage Is Not Ghost (PING) is a live Linux ISO based on LFS
(Linux From Scratch). It can be burnt on a CD and booted, or integrated in
a PXE/RIS environment. Several tools that make it the perfect choice for
easily backing up and restoring whole partitions are included. It supports
backups to and from SMB shares, backup of BIOS data, the ability to blank
the local admin's password, creation of bootable restoration DVDs, the
ability to partition and format a disk before installing Windows, and
more.

Changes: This release upgrades dhcpcd. It asks before overwriting BIOS
settings with those of the source image. It's now possible to pass
parameters to PING through isolinux.cfg/pxelinux.cfg's APPEND line (easier
than /etc/ping.conf). Mkfs.vfat has been added to the distribution (this is
a bugfix, as PING needs it when it has to split a disk's unique partition
to store an image locally). The kernel has been updated to 2.6.22.6.

[046] - rsyslog 1.19.5 (Development)
  by Rainer Gerhards (http://freshmeat.net/users/rgerhards/)
  Fri, Sep 7th 2007 11:09

System :: Logging

About: Rsyslog is an enhanced multi-threaded syslogd. Among other
features, it offers support for reliable syslog over TCP and RFC 3195,
writing to MySQL databases, fully configurable output formats (including
great timestamps), the ability to filter on any part of the syslog
message, and on-the-wire message compression. It is designed as a drop-in
replacement for stock syslogd and thus is able to work with the same
configuration file syntax. Of course, some enhanced features require
changing the configuration file, but in general, this should be fairly
easy.

Changes: This release is primarily targeted at fixing rare situations in
which a segfault could occur. These have not consistently been able to be
reproduced in the lab. This release may still have a problem, or may hang
where previous versions segfaulted. Feature-wise, the $ModDir config
directive has been added, and $ModLoad has been enhanced. This upgrade is
recommended for those that experience the problem with earlier versions,
or those actively interested in helping to troubleshoot.

[048] - samhain 2.3.6
  by rainer (http://freshmeat.net/users/rainer/)
  Fri, Sep 7th 2007 02:33

Security

About: samhain is a daemon that can check file integrity, search the file
tree for SUID files, and detect kernel module rootkits (Linux only). It
can be used either standalone or as a client/server system for centralized
monitoring, with strong (192-bit AES) encryption for client/server
connections and the option to store databases and configuration files on
the server. For tamper resistance, it supports signed
database/configuration files and signed reports/audit logs. It has been
tested on Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris, AIX, HP-UX, and Unixware.

Changes: A problem with the SUID check has been fixed that would prevent
quarantining new SUID files already found by the regular file system
check. Also, a new option has been added to run the SUID check on file
systems mounted with the "nosuid" flag. Compile problems have been fixed,
as well as a potential local DoS against the server on BSD systems lacking
the getpeereid() library function.

About: Solar Imperium is a Solar Realms Elite clone. In it, you rule a
solar empire. The goal is to become and remain the most powerful empire.
You can gain strength by buying forces, and you can gain size by
colonizing planets. You start with some planets, and a little bit of
money. You are required to feed your people and army, and to pay to
maintain your planets and army. If you fail to do these things, disastrous
results may occur. You are given several turns of protection, during which
you cannot attack or be attacked, and cannot perform covert operations.
This provides a way for smaller empires to build up their defenses and
planets before they enter the real world.

Changes: This release adds a new global market, a real economic system, a
Flash8 interactive StarMap, two new resources (ore and petroleum), and an
installer made in PHP. Users can now sell research points. All the
resources (food, petroleum, ore) are now auto-buyable if some quantity is

possible to "protect" game data from editors. Support for window manager
window closing has been added, and the main menu was also improved.

[056] - The Parsnip Parser Library 0.13
  by Alex Rubinsteyn (http://freshmeat.net/users/viergroupie/)
  Fri, Sep 7th 2007 14:13

Software Development

About: The Parsnip library allows you to build complex parsers from a rich
set of parser primitives. This allows developers to easily and succinctly
express grammars in C++. Parsnip's default parser strategy is form of
packrat parsing, augmented to allow for left-recursion within a parser.
Since left recursion is allowed, the set of languages Parsnip can
recognize may be (and probably is) a superset of those recognized by
Parser Expression Grammars. Vanilla packrat parsing is available as a
configuration option.

Changes: This is the first usable/useful release. Some functions have not
yet been implemented, and error handling is abysmal. Nonetheless, the
implementation of simple programming languages (mini-schemes, calculators,
etc.) is already quite easy.

[057] - Truecrypt Installer for Debian 20070902
  by Jari Aalto (http://freshmeat.net/users/jaalto/)
  Fri, Sep 7th 2007 06:04

System :: Filesystems

About: Truecrypt Installer for Debian helps to get Truecrypt running with
a minimum of effort under Debian-based Linux systems (Debian and Ubuntu
are officially supported). Truecrypt is Open Source disk encryption
software which uses a concept of containers to store encrypted data. The
containers (or volumes) can be read transparently under Linux and Windows.
The installer creates installable *.deb packages from the Truecrypt
sources, and those debs can be used in turn to activate Truecrypt.

  Fri, Sep 7th 2007 14:14

Internet
Software Development :: Libraries

About: WvStreams is a library set composed of a number of parts. Among
them are WvIPStreams (WvTCPStream and WvUDPStream), WvStrings (yet another

support to applications), UniConf (a universal configuration system),
WvLog (nice, simple handling of log files), and a whole host of other
goodness. These are the base classes used to build programs such as the
ever popular WvDial, TunnelVision, FastForward, KWvDial, and retchmail.

Changes: Many fixes and updates to make the Win32 port work again. Crash
dump support in Win32. For unit testing purposes, a graphical test runner
and a set of valgrind suppressions suitable for WvStreams are now
installed by default.
