[001] - Absolute OS 12.0.5
  by Paul Sherman (http://freshmeat.net/users/psherma1/)
  Sat, Sep 8th 2007 17:29

About: Absolute is a lightweight Slackware Linux derivative distribution
that uses an Icewm, ROX-Filer window/file manager combination. It comes
with Firefox, The GIMP, MPlayer, K3B, kTorrent, Gaim, Frostwire, Gftp,
StarDict, Skype, and many other titles all set up and ready to run.
Several utilities are included to ease configuration and management. It is
compatible with all Slackware 11 packages and can be installed just like a
Slackware disk, except that you cannot choose which packages to install or
remove, as it just installs everything.

Changes: Kernel woes have been put to rest. The final kernel image is
2570k and can install on a Pentium Classic with just 48MB of RAM. Any
lingering patent-encumbered software has been removed. Several UI tweaks
have been made and source code diffs included for customized KDE-LIBS and
abs_fdisk used by linHDD. An ISO is now available from SourceForge, as
well as a zip file containing ISO and HTML installation instructions.

  Sat, Sep 8th 2007 12:20

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Analysis
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Mixers
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players

About: BpmDj is a program that can be used by a DJ. It plays MP3 and Ogg
files. It has a fully automatic BPM counter. It can determine the sound
color. It has a full fledged Qt based interface. It will help you manage a
large amount of songs. It can help in creating playlists and has proven to
be very robust. The program also allows offline automatic mixing and
contains a wavelet based beat graph analyzer to visualize audio tracks.

Changes: Mpc files are recognized now. If the tempo is unknown, the player
will jump forwards or backwards by seconds. The software should be more
64-bit compatible. The bpmmerger was extended with a "use last cue"
option.

  by Risujin (http://freshmeat.net/users/Risujin/)
  Sat, Sep 8th 2007 17:23

Adaptive Technologies
Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence
Scientific/Engineering :: Image Recognition

About: CellWriter is a grid-entry natural handwriting input panel. As you
write characters into the cells, your writing is instantly recognized at
the character level. When you press 'Enter' on the panel, the input you
entered is sent to the currently focused application as if typed on the
keyboard. Writer-dependent, CellWriter learns your handwriting for
reliable recognition. Correcting preprocessor algorithms account for
digitizer noise, differing stroke order, direction, and number of strokes.
Unicode support enables you to write in any language.

Changes: The source and the Debian package are now compatible with Debian
Etch and Ubuntu.

[007] - Das Schaefchen 0.1.7
  by Guido (http://freshmeat.net/users/guidoreina/)
  Sat, Sep 8th 2007 11:35

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers

About: Das Schaefchen is a lightweight HTTP server for Linux platforms. It
supports the minimum requirements of the HTTP/1.1 protocol and virtual
hosts, basic authentication (which can be used to protect either files or
directories), directory listing, and byte ranges. It is an event-driven
server that runs as a single process with a single thread using
non-blocking I/O. It uses epoll as the event notification mechanism to
multiplex control between active connections.

Changes: The header fields: "Date" and "Last-Modified" showed the day of
the month with just one digit (instead of two) when it was less than 10,
which is not conformant with the RFC 822. This made the
"If-Modified-Since" request header field useless. This release now
displays all days with two digits. The "304 No Modified" response didn't
include the "Last-Modified" header field.

Education
Education :: Computer Aided Instruction (CAI)
Education :: Testing

About: LON-CAPA (The LearningOnline Network with CAPA) is a learning
content and course management system. It offers an underlying shared
content pool from which instructors across departmental and institutional
boundaries can assemble granular learning content for their courses. It
has strong assessment capabilities, both formative (homework and in-class
using wireless PDAs) and summative (online and bubblesheet exams), with a
one-source multiple-target strategy for the content. It offers students
portfolio space in which they can stage materials for submission to
projects, and provides a number of tools for synchronous and asynchronous
student-student and student-faculty communication. LON-CAPA scales well
with number of students, as load-balancing is possible across the whole
network of servers at participating institutions.

Changes: This release supports the creation of author accounts with "@" in
the username. Errors in Kerberos 5 authentication are logged. Importing IMS
Packages into courses works again. The clicker interface now better
supports the error situation in which two users in one class registered
the same clicker. During course creation, restrictions on course cloning
are better supported. Several improvements in the user creation and
authorization interface were implemented to query the LON-CAPA or
institutional user directories. The German localization was improved.

  by Ben Crowell (http://freshmeat.net/users/bcrowell/)
  Sat, Sep 8th 2007 14:20

Education :: Computer Aided Instruction (CAI)

About: Spotter is software that can check students' answers to symbolic
and numerical problems in math and science. It recognizes an answer
regardless of the form it's in, and the instructor can put in helpful
hints as responses to frequently-occurring mistakes. Symbolic answers can
be input in a notation closely resembling normal human math notation
(e.g., xy rather than x*y, and sin x instead of sin(x)). Spotter runs as a
Perl CGI application on a Web server; the student doesn't need to install
any software.
