Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)
Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: IMAP

About: AlphaMail is a mod_perl webmail system with a C++ middleware
component that is intended to make the system highly scalable. It supports
many Unix variants with any RFC-compliant IMAP server (including UW, Cyrus,
and Dovecot).

Changes: A problem with mimeword decoding that was clipping some fields in
compose and the address book was fixed. Encode::IMAPUTF7 was integrated
into the code base along with a patch for it, avoiding problems with the
old encoder from the CPAN Unicode package (pre .38) and the new one from
the CPAN Encode package. A bug in the Web cache that prevented certain
special characters (like quotes) in folder names was fixed.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio :: CD Writing

About: burnCDDA is a console frontend to cdrdao, cdrecord, MPlayer,
mpg321, oggdec, mppdec, flac, normalize, and mp3_check. It can be used to
create audio CDs from an M3U playlist (the playlist format of XMMS and
amaroK) or from files inside a directory. It supports MP3, OGG Vorbis,
Musepack, FLAC, WMA, M4A, and WAV files, and it might be the easiest way
to copy an audio CD.

Changes: Now it is possible to burn files inside a directory without a
playlist.

[005] - camp2ascii 0.97
  by Mathias Bavay (http://freshmeat.net/users/math/)
  Thu, Sep 13th 2007 11:01

Scientific/Engineering

About: camp2ascii is a tool for converting Campbell Scientific binary
files into ASCII (formatted as CSV, SQL, etc.). It extracts the data
stored in the binary files created by data loggers while trying to be
fast, reliable, and to extract as much information as possible. It should
also work on a wide range of platforms.

Changes: More data types are now supported (bool4, ASCII, NSEC, IEEE 4
(LSB and MSB), FP2, uint2, and int4 have been validated), and the code has
been further optimized for speed.

  Thu, Sep 13th 2007 01:12

System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration

About: collectd is a small and modular daemon which collects system
information periodically and provides means to store the values. Included
in the distribution are numerous plug-ins for collecting CPU, disk, and
memory usage, network interface and DNS traffic, network latency, database
statistics, and much more. Custom statistics can easily be added in a
number of ways, including execution of arbitrary programs and plug-ins
written in Perl.

Changes: The "types" used by the apcups-plugin have been fixed. The
exec-plugin sets the group ID for executed applications in a more robust
fashion. New RRD files created by the rrdtool-plugin now have the "start
time" set to the time of the first data sample, not what the server
considers to be "now". Error reporting and the documentation have been
improved.

[010] - deco archive file extractor 0.5.3.1
  by P. Hartlich (http://freshmeat.net/users/phartlich/)
  Thu, Sep 13th 2007 11:25

System :: Archiving

About: deco is a generic archive file extractor that has a consistent
command line interface ("deco 1.tar.bz2 2.zip 3.flac 4.rar 5.deb" will
just work) and consistent behavior (it never deletes archives after
extraction, extracts relative to the current working directory, and
extracts just verbosely enough, all unless explicitly requested
otherwise). It provides automatic handling of extractor gotchas by
creating an extraction directory if there is more than one file or
directory at the archive top level and by being able to fix strange
permissions. Dozens of archive file extensions are supported out of the
box, and adding support for others requires very little work.

[011] - Fachwerk 0.3.0
  by qwert (http://freshmeat.net/users/qwert2003/)
  Thu, Sep 13th 2007 14:19

Scientific/Engineering

About: Fachwerk calculates strut-and-tie models used by structural
engineers for analysing and designing reinforced concrete structures. The
program only uses the equilibrium conditions, thus it is not assuming
elastic behaviour.

Changes: Upon request, the program proposes member forces if the system is
statically indeterminate. The calculation is linear-elastic and assumes a
fixed ratio compression to tension stiffness. The algorithm works even if
the system is unstable. The user still has to judge if the proposed member
forces are reasonable for the given case.

  Thu, Sep 13th 2007 11:12

Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Interpreters
Software Development :: Libraries

About: GNU Smalltalk is a free implementation of the Smalltalk-80
language.

Changes: The documentation generator used during the build is also
installed as gst-doc. Late binding of variable names allows a single Eval
to load an external file and refer to a class defined in that file. A new
Sport package has been added. SUnit test suites can access variables
defined on the command line to gst-sunit. The ZLib deflation stream was
rewritten, and supports partial flushing. A parser written in Smalltalk
for GNU Smalltalk 3.0 syntax has been added. Package loading is faster,
and no longer needs InfoZIP after compilation. The DBI library has been
rewritten with support for MySQL and PostgreSQL. Bugfixes in 2.3.6 are
included.

  by PCMan (Hong Jen Yee) (http://freshmeat.net/users/PCMan/)
  Thu, Sep 13th 2007 07:16

Desktop Environment :: Gnome
Desktop Environment :: Tools
Multimedia :: Graphics

About: GPicView is a simple and fast image viewer with low memory usage.
It's aimed at replacing the default image viewer of current desktop
systems. Fast startup, low memory usage, and a simple user interface make
it a good choice for a default viewer. It is extremely lightweight and
fast with low memory usage, has a simple and intuitive interface, minimal
library dependencies (only GTK+ is used), and doesn't require any specific
desktop environment. It was inspired by the Windows XP image viewer and
gimmage.

Changes: The memory usage and speed of "zoom in" and "zoom out" was
optimized. Some small but important bugs were fixed.

  Thu, Sep 13th 2007 11:38

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Object Brokering

About: Granite Data Services (GDS) is an alternative to Adobe® LiveCycle®
(Flex™ 2) Data Services for J2EE application servers. It is not, however,
a drop-in replacement: you won't be able to simply deploy a Flex 2 Data
Services application into a Granite Data Services server without
modifications. The main goal of this project is to provide a framework for
Flex 2/EJB3/Spring/Pojo application development with full AMF3/RemoteObject
benefits.

[017] - Gujin 2.2
  by Etienne (http://freshmeat.net/users/etiennelorrain/)
  Thu, Sep 13th 2007 14:20

System :: Boot :: Init

About: Gujin is a PC boot loader which can analyze your filesystems. It
finds the Linux kernel images available, as well as other bootable
partitions (for *BSD, MS-DOS, Windows, etc.), and displays a graphical
menu for selecting which system to boot. Because it understands the
structure of Linux kernel images, Gujin does not need LILO and can even
load ELF kernels. There is no need to execute anything after making a new
kernel: just copy the kernel image file into the "/boot" directory. Gujin
is written almost entirely in C with GCC, and it fully executes in real
mode to be as compatible as possible.

Changes: This release fixes the bug related to saving Gujin parameters to
the boot device, adds a 10x20 font for graphic modes over 768 lines (and a
small software "fnthex2h" to convert hex font from gbdfed to gujin format),
recognizes the file "bootsect.dos" as a copy of a partition boot sector and
tries to boot from it, and better manages the write_enable flag when the
boot device is read-only. It also treats Windows XP like Windows 98, and
should be able to run them in extended partitions or on a different (BIOS)
drive than the first one.

Internet
System
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks

About: Keepalived for LVS aims to add a strong and robust keepalive
facility to the Linux Virtual Server project. This project is written in C
with multilayer TCP/IP stack checks. It implements a framework based on
three family checks: Layer3, Layer4, and Layer5. This framework gives the
daemon the ability of checking a LVS server pool states.When one of the
servers in the LVS server pool is down, keepalived informs the Linux
kernel via a setsockopt call to remove this server entry from the LVS
topology. In addition, it implements a VRRPv2 stack to handle director
failover.

Changes: The parsing framework has been extended to support include
directives and error logging. Patches have been merged from RPMforge. A
script goodies directory has been added. A compilation issue in the VRRP
code has been fixed. VRRP negative weights in script have been fixed. The
VRRP framework has been extended to support old-style Linux aliases.
Support for VRRP script logging has been added.

  Thu, Sep 13th 2007 11:29

System :: Archiving
System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Archiving :: Compression

About: Star is a very fast, POSIX-compliant tar archiver. It saves many
files together into a single tape or disk archive, and can restore
individual files from the archive. It includes command line interfaces for
the "tar", "Sun-Tar", "cpio", "pax", and "gnutar" command-line syntax. It
includes a FIFO for speed, a pattern matcher, multi-volume support, the
ability to archive sparse files and ACLs, the ability to archive extended
file flags, automatic archive format detection, automatic byte order
recognition, automatic archive compression/decompression, remote archives,
and special features that allow star to be used for full and incremental
backups. It includes the only known platform independent "rmt" server
program.

Changes: This release fixes a core dump problem with gcc compiled binaries
and -data-change-warn. The file star-symtable is now written in a way that
is safe against system crashes during writes. To keep directory time
stamps, star no longer recreates symlinks and special files in incremental
restore mode if the files are identical.

  Thu, Sep 13th 2007 07:00

Software Development :: Interpreters
Software Development :: Libraries

About: SigScheme is a R5RS Scheme interpreter for embedded use. It
features a small footprint (64KB in library form on the "small"
configuration) like SIOD and TinyScheme, low memory consumption (2-words
per cons cell), handling of multibyte characters (UTF-8, EUCs, and
Shift_JIS), and more. It is mainly developed to replace the Scheme
interpreter of uim.

Changes: Most features left unvalidated in the 0.7.x series have been
validated and now can be used for production codes. Various new features
were implemented such as SRFI 0, 1, 9, 43, 55, 69, 95, define-macro, and

blacklisting, graylisting, DNS RBL checking, improved logging, and more.
spamdyke will provide SMTP AUTH and TLS to unpatched qmail servers.
Installing spamdyke does not require patching or recompiling qmail.

Changes: Options can be read from configuration files instead of just the
command line. Common configuration problems can be found with an automated
test. SMTP AUTH on patched qmail servers is handled automatically, without
configuration. Compilation is much easier with the "configure" script.
RHSBLs are supported. Inverse DNSBLs and RHSBLs (whitelists instead of
blacklists) are supported.

About: SyWiCo is a tool for managing concurrent modifications of shared
files between unconnected computers. It can be used as a synchronization
tool relying on email. Its main design goal was for synchronizing the
source code by email between developers, when the use of a source control
software is not possible. The communication is stateless and reduced to a
very small number of messages, typically 2 or 4. It does not create any
files in the directories that it synchronizes, and leaves one participant
free from dealing with merging and conflict resolution. This is not a tool
to replace source control programs, as it provides no versioning.

[046] - X11 Audio Extension 0.5
  by Helge Bahmann (http://freshmeat.net/users/caleridas/)
  Thu, Sep 13th 2007 01:26

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
Software Development :: Libraries

About: The X11 Audio Extension aims to provide audio support for the X
Window System, in particular the X.Org reference implementation. Audio
data can be directly routed through the X protocol so that remote
applications can transparently play and capture audio across the network
in the same way they can do graphics and mouse/keyboard user interaction.
Applications with strict latency requirements can alternatively use shared
memory. The extension provides hooks for an "audio compositing manager"
that manages how multiple applications may simultaneously access the audio
hardware (mix streams, mute some streams); it is the counterpart to the
window manager.

About: XML Schema for Java (XSD4J) is a small, well-documented library
that implements schema parsing, handling, and transformations. Built-in
types can be bootstrapped, and the level of parsing and structure building
can be controlled by the application and augmented at every time. XSD4J
ships with tools like Regexp2XSD to convert regular expressions to
schemas, and XSDGraph to display complete type graphs.

Changes: Bootstrap schemas can now be loaded in precompiled format to
speed up XSD processing. Constraint propagation and other optimisations in
merged mode were introduced. XML Schema compliance was increased by the
inclusion of uniqueness constraints and whitespace facets. The command
line tools xsdbootcompiler, xsdinstantiator, and regex2xsd were added to
make XSD4J's functionality available to non-programmers. Debian packages
are now provided.
