Software Development :: Libraries

About: The ADAPTIVE Communication Environment (ACE) is an object-oriented
(OO) C++ framework that helps you develop and deploy high-performance
networked applications faster and with less code to write and maintain.
ACE is especially useful for systems that use network and/or inter-process
communications and that take advantage of multithreading. While the ACE
source code is free, that's not the only way you save money with ACE.
ACE's wrappers and higher-level patterns help you develop your software
quickly and portably, helping you to complete your projects on time and
within budget.

Changes: Improved CodeGear C++ Builder support. Assorted bugfixes and code
cleanups.

Software Development :: Interpreters

About: ActivePython is a Python distribution available for Windows, Linux,
Mac OS X, Solaris, AIX, and HP-UX. ActivePython is fully compatible with
the reference distribution of Python. Code tested with ActivePython will
run on any Python installation that has the appropriate extensions

[006] - BlockHosts 2.0.6
  by Avinash Chopde (http://freshmeat.net/users/avinash1/)
  Wed, Sep 19th 2007 00:01

System :: Networking

About: BlockHosts is a script to record how many times a local system is
attacked, based on configurable scanning of system logs for sshd or other
services. When a particular IP address exceeds a configured number of
failed login attempts, that IP address is blocked using hosts.allow files,
or by using null-routing, or by using packet filtering. An email
notification facility is also available.

Changes: A rule to match postfix attacks was added. An issue was fixed
where blockhosts.py was reprocessing log files from the beginning instead
of where it last left off because of incorrect handling of log files whose
first line contained trailing spaces at end-of-line.

Internet :: Proxy Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Security

About: CacheGuard is a Linux-based operating system dedicated to Web
traffic control and optimization. It transforms an x86-based machine into
a powerful, Web gateway appliance. It allows you to secure Web traffic for
Web surfers and Web servers by acting as a forwarding and reverse HTTP /
HTTPS proxy. It supports HTTP transparent implementation, HTTP
compression, Web caching, URL black- and whitelist guarding, and Web
server load balancing. It features a stateful firewall with NAT and PAT,
and a content filtering module blocking malicious HTTP requests like XSS,
SQL and Command Injection. It integrates a caching DNS, a DHCP server, a
bandwidth shaper to manage the QoS, a load sharing system, and an HA (high
availability) mode with VRRP and link bonding.

Changes: TRACK and TRACE methods are denied for the embedded Web server
and all hosted Web servers even if the filtering mode is not activated.
Content filtering is only applicable to reverse Web sites, and does not
affect the forwarding proxy. Custom content filtering based on regular
expressions is operational. The syntax of the command "guard" has been
changed. The command "conf" is optimized to run faster.

System :: Filesystems
System :: Systems Administration

About: FSlint is a toolkit to find various forms of lint on a filesystem.
At the moment it reports duplicate files, bad symbolic links, troublesome
file names, empty directories, non stripped executables, temporary files,
duplicate/conflicting (binary) names, and unused ext2 directory blocks.

Changes: New translations were made for Hebrew, Italian, and Russian. The
translations for Chinese (simplified), French, German, Swedish, and
Vietnamese were updated. The GUI now handles paths with spaces in the
names of empty directories and spaces at the end of names of duplicate
files. Brace expansion was removed from debian/rules to allow the package
to build on Debian systems where dash is the default shell. A bug
reintroduced in 2.22 (GUI only) where duplicates with independent
hardlinks were not reported correctly was fixed.

[018] - fwknop 1.8.2
  by Michael Rash (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelrash/)
  Wed, Sep 19th 2007 06:04

Security
System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: fwknop implements an authorization scheme that requires only a
single encrypted packet to communicate various pieces of information,
including desired access through a Netfilter policy and/or specific
commands to execute on the target system. The main application of this
program is to protect services such as SSH with an additional layer of
security in order to make the exploitation of vulnerabilities much more
difficult. The authorization server works by passively monitoring
authorization packets via libpcap.

Changes: fwknopd server support was added for Mac OS X. The Darwin uname
return string is detected and this enables Darwin-specific installation
code in install.pl. Sensitive key/password information is not printed in
--debug mode with fwknopd. A bugfix was made for install.pl on Windows
2003 Server running under Cygwin where "uname -o" output is reported
"Gygwin" for some reason. The --OS-type command line argument was added to
install.pl to allow the user to force the installation type.
Crypt::Rijndael was updated to version 1.04. This fixes incompatibilities
between SPA packets between 64-bit and 32-bit platforms.

Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Chemistry

About: GAMGI (General Atomistic Modelling Graphic Interface) is a program
to build, view, and analyze atomic strucures such as molecules, crystals,
glasses, liquids, etc. It aims to be useful for: the scientific community
working in Atomistic Modelling that needs a graphic interface to build
input data and to view and analyse output data, calculated with Ab-Initio
and Molecular Mechanics programs; the scientific community at large
studying chemistry, physics, materials science, geology, etc., that needs
a graphic interface to view and analyse atomic structural information and
to prepare images for presentations in classes and seminars; teaching
chemistry and physics in secondary schools and universities; science

System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Systems Administration

About: Genders is a static cluster configuration database used for cluster
configuration management. It is used by a variety of tools and scripts for
management of large clusters. The genders database is accessed by every
node in a cluster, either through a networked file system or by
replicating the database on every node of the cluster. The database
describes the layout and configuration of the cluster so that tools and
scripts can sense the variations of cluster nodes. By abstracting this
information into a plain text file, it becomes possible to change the
configuration of a cluster by modifying only one file.

Database :: Database Engines/Servers
Internet

About: GeoServer connects your information to the Geospatial Web. With
GeoServer, you can publish and edit data using open standards. Your
information is made available in a large variety of formats as maps/images
or actual geospatial data. GeoServer's transactional capabilities offer
robust support for shared editing. It supports WFS-T and WMS open
protocols from the OGC to produce JPEG, PNG, SVG, KML/KMZ, GML, PDF,
Shapefiles, GeoRSS, JSON, and more. It is built on the GeoTools2 Java GIS
toolkit.

Changes: The main focus of this release has been a number of performance
improvements, mostly centered around rendering maps. Other improvements
include fixes in reprojection in the WFS, with some of the WFS 1.1 work
being backported to WFS 1.0. This allows things like digitizing on top of
Yahoo! Maps and saving the points back to GeoServer, where it
automatically puts it in the right projection for the dataset. The WFS
datastore is also now fixed up. The GeoJSON implementation is now part of
the standard distribution instead of a separate download.

  by Kumosan (http://freshmeat.net/users/kumosan/)
  Wed, Sep 19th 2007 14:21

Communications :: File Sharing

About: GSTorrent is a Bittorrent client/server system. A daemon program
handles all the file transfers as a Bittorrent client. The GSTorrent
daemon also acts as a server for an external GUI client. The objective is
to have a relatively small Bittorrent client, which runs on a small
computer without a graphical interface and to control this server from a
different machine. An example of this type of architecture is the mldonkey
client/server system for the edonkey protocol.

Changes: Under heavy traffic between client and server, the client
reported a 'hash corruption' or 'number conversion failed' and aborted.
This has been fixed.

Software Development :: Compilers

About: Metastorage is a PHP data access object generator compiler tool. It
implements an object persistence API from a description in an XML format
named CPML. The persistent object classes implement object-relational
mappings, so developers do not have to write SQL manually. It features an
object query language for specifying conditions for querying objects,
generation of classes for producing reports, generation of classes to
manage templated Web forms for creating new persistent objects, and
generation of UML class diagrams. It can be run from the command line or
from a Web interface.

Changes: This release introduces the capability of generating a new type
of function to create a copy of an existing persistent object in memory.
The generation of form processing classes for creating new objects was
enhanced to support classes with variables of types boolean, integer,
decimal, and float. This release also includes several minor bugfixes.

[049] - Stunnix VBScript and ASP Obfuscator and Encoder 3.2
  by Stunnix (http://freshmeat.net/users/stunnix/)
  Wed, Sep 19th 2007 10:43

Internet
Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers

About: Stunnix VBS-Obfus protects your VBScript code from potential
analysis, study, or reworking by unwanted parties. It's both an obfuscator
and encoder for the VBScript code. It converts the VBScript in raw .vbs
files, or in ASP or HTML pages into a highly obfuscated form, making it
extremely difficult to study, analyse, or reuse, while fully retaining
functionality of the original source code. It optionally adds expiration
and hostname checking. It has a lot of options to control all aspects of
code hiding, and has full support for all syntax constructs. It is
designed to be multi-module aware.

Changes: This release adds support for protecting VBScript inside string
constants that are arguments of specific function calls in files written
any programming language. This allows one to obfuscate VBScript in .cpp,
java, and .aspx.cs files in a way synchronous with .html or .aspx files
in the same project. Minor fixes and enhancements have been introduced.

send periodic reports. Additionally, uninteresting fields in the log lines
(such as PID numbers) can be masked with the standard regular expression
grouping operators ( ). This allows cleaner and more readable reports. All
reports are separated by hostname and all messages are condensed when
possible.

Changes: A tail_multiple option was added. A CSV option was added for

About: Tudu Lists is a Web application for managing todo lists. With Tudu
Lists, todo lists can be easily accessed, edited, and shared on the Web.
It is a simple but effective project management tool.

Changes: Better Eclipse configuration using WTP and Tomcat (Tudu Lists is
a sample application for a Spring book.) In-line editing of todos. Better
use of ehcache: now Acegi Security and Hibernate have separated ehcache
instances, which will suppress some annoying messages when shutting down
the application. Several minor bugs have been corrected.

[056] - VULCAN 6.0.1
  by imipak (http://freshmeat.net/users/imipak/)
  Wed, Sep 19th 2007 14:14

Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics
Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization

About: VULCAN (Viscous Upwind aLgorithm for Complex flow ANalysis) offers
computational fluid dynamics for subsonic speed through hypersonic
turbulent reacting and non-reacting flows on a variety of serial and
parallel computational platforms. The computational cost of propulsion
flow analysis is reduced through the use of special turbulent wall
treatments, multi-grid methods for elliptic and space marching schemes,
and conditioning of the governing equations to reduce numerical stiffness.
Physical modeling capabilities are improved through the inclusion of models
for compressibility, Reynolds stress anisotropies, turbulent diffusivity,
finite rate chemistry, and turbulence/chemistry interaction effects.
VULCAN can simulate two-dimensional, three-dimensional, or axi-symmetric
multi-block problems.

Changes: This release adds support for 64-bit platform options that
utilize the Portland Group or PathScale compilers. It adds support for the
freely available G95 F90 compiler. Extended initial conditions that can be
set within the solver. Numerous bugfixes.

[057] - whatsup 1.7-1
  by Albert Chu (http://freshmeat.net/users/chu11/)
  Wed, Sep 19th 2007 10:28

System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks

About: Whatsup is a cluster node up/down detection utility. It can quickly
calculate and output the up and down nodes of a cluster through one of
several possible backend tools and several optional cluster node
databases. The currently supported backend tools are Ganglia, Cerebro, and
Pingd (which can be downloaded as a subpackage of Whatsup). The curently
supported cluster databases are genders, gendersllnl (a locally supported
LLNL version of genders), and hostsfile (a textfile list of host names). C
and Perl libraries for detecting up/down nodes are also included in the
package.

Changes: A libnodeupdown nodeupdown_last_up_time() function has been
added. last_up_time support has been added to the nodeupdown cerebro
backend. A whatsup -r option has been added.

[060] - zfec 1.0.4
  by zooko (http://freshmeat.net/users/zooko/)
  Wed, Sep 19th 2007 17:58

Communications :: File Sharing
Communications :: Usenet News
System :: Archiving :: Backup

About: zfec is a fast, portable, and programmable implementation of
erasure coding. It includes a C library, a Python library, and a
command-line tool. Erasure coding is also known as "forward error
correction", which is the generation of redundant blocks of information
such that if some blocks are lost then the original data can be recovered
from the remaining blocks. The RAID-5 algorithm is an erasure code, but
while RAID-5 can recover from the loss of any one element, zfec can be
parameterized to choose in advance the number of elements whose loss it
can tolerate.

Changes: Packaged with setuptools/easy_install. If you have easy_install
(the Python install tool), then you can download and install zfec with the
command line "easy_install zfec".
