[001] - AsmBug 0.9.44
by Jeff Owens (http://freshmeat.net/users/rabidrecluse/)
Fri, Sep 21st 2007 16:46
About: AsmBug is a small powerful debugger for assembly language. It is
written in assembly, and connects directly to an X server. It works with
source files to present results, and also works with striped executables.
It has no dependencies and can be installed by copying. Most operations
are a single click or keystroke, and each window has a help pop-up.
Changes: This release adds a new elf decoder and fixes several bugs.
Problem reports have been few, and this release is expected to be a stable
beta.

by Andi Kleen (http://freshmeat.net/users/andikleen/)
Fri, Sep 21st 2007 06:55
Software Development :: Testing
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux
About: autoboot is a job scheduler/watchdog to automatically compile/boot
and run test suites with experimental Linux kernels. It runs from a
central server and a pool of clients. The central server builds various
kernels, then automatically boots a subset of them on the clients and runs
test suites (like autotest). The server is very careful to watch the
clients for hangs and power switch them as needed, and will also
automatically fetch serial logs from a console server. All the resulting
information is stored in a unique output directory for each for easy post
processing. autoboot is a collection of bash shell scripts. It will need
some adaption for local infrastructure.

[005] - biosdevname 0.2.4
by Matt Domsch (http://freshmeat.net/users/mdomsch/)
Fri, Sep 21st 2007 19:28
System :: Hardware
System :: Systems Administration
About: biosdevname in its simplest form takes a kernel device name as an
argument, and returns the BIOS-given name it "should" be. This is
necessary on systems where the BIOS name for a given device (e.g. the
label on the chassis is "Gb1") doesn't map directly and obviously to the
kernel name (e.g. eth0).
Changes: Work has been done to integrate biosdevname with udev rules
cleanly. This release, along with udev > 115, accomplishes that. A
segfault in the PCMCIA code path and another segfault have been fixed.
This release is available as a Debian package. There are some changes to
the makefile and RPM spec file.

multiplatform installers for Linux (x86/PPC/s390/x86_64/Itanium), Windows,
Mac OS X, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Solaris (x86/Sparc), IRIX, AIX, and HP-UX
applications. The generated application installers have a native
look-and-feel and no external dependencies, and can be run in GUI, text,
and unattended modes. In addition to self-contained installers, the
installation tool is also able to generate standalone RPM packages.
Changes: LZMA compression support creates smaller installers. Installer
startup speed was improved. Better Vista integration. New actions and
rules to check for processes, calculate free space, and INI file

by Luis Otávio Furquim (http://freshmeat.net/users/vuco/)
Fri, Sep 21st 2007 10:56
System :: Archiving :: Mirroring
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Filesystems
About: Chiron FS is a FUSE based filesystem that implements replication at
the filesystem level like RAID 1 does at the device level. The replicated
filesystem may be of any kind you want; the only requisite is that you
mount it. There is no need for special configuration files; the setup is
as simple as one mount command (or one line in fstab).
Changes: A vulnerability has been fixed where files created a user other
than the user that mounted ChironFS were owned by the mounting user and
not the file creator. An experimental fix for a failure to exclude all
files when doing massive delete ("rm -Rf" on directories with thousands of
files). A bug that prevented using logfile-relative pathnames has been
fixed. A prioritization system has been implemented, modifying the simple
round-robin that made the load balance on read operations, and improving
performance when some replicas are significantly slower than others. A
memory leak has been fixed.

About: Ctalk provides object oriented programming features, like classes,
methods, operator overloading, and inheritance to otherwise standard C
programs. You can use only a few objects and classes in a program, or you
can write programs entirely in ctalk. The package provides a translator
from ctalk source code into C for compilation and a library that provides
run-time support for class objects. The preprocessor, ctpp, is also
available separately, and the package includes sample programs and
documentation.
Changes: This release adds methods that define instance and class
variables in class objects, and contains further improvements in

Changes: Works with badly formed HTML that can be found "in the wild". The
diffing is more specialized in HTML than XML tree differs. Changing part of
a text node will not cause the entire node to be changed. In addition to
the default visual diff, HTML source can be diffed coherently. Provides

About: The Enterprise Password Safe is designed to solve the problem of
password management, protection, and access auditing in multi-user,
multi-system environments. The Enterprise Password Safe secures data using
a multi-layered combination of the RSA, AES, and PKCS5-3 encryption
algorithms. It also provides access controls at the group, user, and
network levels. The EPS logs privileged operations and allows real time
email alerts to be sent to a nominated list of administrators. The EPS
adapts to your infrastructure.
Changes: This release adds a personal password folder to hold the user's
personal passwords, a page showing outstanding restricted access requests,
the ability to set custom fields for all new passwords, the ability to
include custom fields in a password importation, and an API for external
programs.

Fri, Sep 21st 2007 01:34
Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Filesystems
About: libferris is a virtual filesystem that exposes hierarchical data of
all kinds through a common C++ interface. Access to data is performed using
C++ IOStreams and Extended Attributes (EA) can be attached to each file or
directory to present metadata. Ferris uses a plugin API to read various
data sources and expose them as filesystems and to generate interesting
EA. Current implementations include native (kernel disk IO with fam), XML
(mount an XML file as a filesystem), DB4, xmldb, Evolution, Firefox,
Emacs, LDAP, HTTP, FTP, eet, sockets, RDF/XML, RDF/bdb, and mbox. EA
generators include image, audio, and animation decoders.
Changes: This release has initial optional support for running metadata
extraction out of process. Optimizations were made to the PostgreSQL
metadata index plugin. The boost::uncompressed document gap codec was
added for the db4 index plugin. The db4tree metadata index plugin was
added, which assimilates the inverted file completely into the tree
structure. PostgreSQL and stldb4 metadata indexes will need to be remade.
The ferris-export-concept-lattice-to-burmeister client was added for

Desktop Environment
Software Development
About: NoMachine NX is a fast terminal server and desktop virtualization
system based on the X11 protocol. NX is an order of magnitude faster than
VNC or X11 and can run on bandwidth as narrow as 10 kBit/sec. In addition,
NX translates and embeds the MS Windows Terminal Server and VNC protocols
into X/NX, enabling users to compress and accelerate remote Windows and
VNC sessions. The NX project provides a suite of libraries and X11proxying
agents implementing efficient compression and optimized transport of X11,
SMB, IPP, HTTP, and arbitrary protocols like audio and video over the
Internet.
Changes: A new configuration key was added to allow for the specifying of
a different program to be run instead of NX Client or to specify a
different location for the nxclient binary. Fixes were made for a number
of problems. For example, characters may appear mirrored in a nested X11
session, and warnings could arise on some platforms when building nxagent,
NX server may leave a defunct process during the reconnect procedure, and
printing may fail from within the NX session if the local Windows machine
doesn't have the guest account enabled.

[033] - numactl 1.0.2
by Andi Kleen (http://freshmeat.net/users/andikleen/)
Fri, Sep 21st 2007 06:47
About: numactl implements simple NUMA policy support. A NUMA policy allows
you to tune programs by controlling the placement of memory in NUMA (Non
Uniform Memory Access) systems. The numactl program runs other programs
with a specific NUMA policy, and the libnuma shared library ("NUMA API")
can be used to set NUMA policy in applications. Libnuma is the preferred
interface to the Linux kernel NUMA policy system calls. The package also
has various tools, like numastat to decode the kernel NUMA statistics.
Changes: This release fixes a parallel Makefile build, fixes target
command argument parsing for numactl ("-" is no longer needed), and
clarifies the numa_node_to_cpus() manpage.
