System :: Networking
System :: Systems Administration
About: /etc/net represents a new approach to Linux network configuration
tasks. Inspired by the limitations of traditional network configuration
subsystems, /etc/net provides built-in support for configuration profiles,
interface name management, removable devices, full iproute2 command set,
interface dependencies resolution, QoS, and firewall configuration
frameworks. /etc/net provides support for the following interface types:
ethernet, WiFi (WEP), IPv4/IPv6 tunnels, PSK IPSec tunnels, VLAN, PLIP,
ethernet bonding and bridging, traffic equalizer, Pent@NET, Pent@VALUE,
SkyStar-2, TUN/TAP, OpenVPN TUN/TAP, usbnet, and PPP. Due to its modular
structure, support for new interface types can be added without overall
design changes.
Changes: This release updates the WPA and IPv4LL code to the current
mainstream practices.

About: Ahcpd is an implementation of the Ad-Hoc Configuration Protocol
(AHCP), an IPv6 stateless configuration protocol for cases where standard
auto-configuration and DHCPv6 don't work, such as mesh networks.
Changes: This version fixes a bug in timer computation that would cause
ahcpd to be much more chatty than necessary.

[003] - Asterisk 1.4.11 (Current)
by rockoo (http://freshmeat.net/users/danielwebert/)
Thu, Sep 27th 2007 10:41
Communications :: Internet Phone
Communications :: Telephony
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
About: Asterisk is a hybrid TDM and packet voice PBX (Private Branch
eXchange) and IVR platform with ACD functionality. It acts as middleware
between the Internet (IAX, SIP, MGCP, Skinny, H.323), telephony channels
(like Zaptel, T1, PRI, E1, FXO, FXS, VoIP, VoFR, ISDN, modems, Internet
Phone Jack, etc.), and applications (like voice-mail, conferencing,
directories, MP3 players, intercoms, etc.). It has many advanced features
such as a codec translation API. The base distribution includes several
channel backends, as well as applications. However, the beauty of Asterisk
is its ability to be extended using its APIs, dynamic module loader, and
AGI scripting interface. End users can even write their own applications
that run on the system in C or any scripting language of their choice.
Changes: This version contains numerous bugfixes. One of these is for a
security issue in chan_sip. The issue is that SIP dialog history was being
stored in memory regardless of whether the option for this was turned on or
off. This could be abused to cause a system using chan_sip to run out of
memory.

About: BMP is a media player which provides a very easy-to-use interface
and usage semantics for all tasks, while having extensive standards and
services support under the hood (MusicBrainz, Last.fm radio/scrobbling,
HAL, DBus), yet keeping the details out of the way of the user.
Changes: The tray icon behavior was made GNOME HIG compliant. Crashes with
the GStreamer error handler and resizing columns in the playlist were
fixed. Equalizer use is now optional even when the GStreamer equalizer
element is installed. A few patches from pkgsrc are now included in
upstream.

[017] - Font Configuration Library 2.4
by SzeZo (http://freshmeat.net/users/szezo/)
Thu, Sep 27th 2007 14:27
About: Fontconfig is a library for configuring and customizing font
access. It contains two essential modules, the configuration module which
builds an internal configuration from XML files and the matching module
which accepts font patterns and returns the nearest matching font.
Changes: Shared mmap'ed cache files. All font cache files are mapped
read-only and shared across multiple processes. The startup performance
and memory footprint of the library have, as a result, been significantly
improved. Configuration is split into multiple files. While 2.3 provided
the ability to incorporate additional configuration files from a
directory, it didn't use them extensively. The new configuration structure
places most of the configuration into separate files.

About: FreeType 2 is a high-quality and portable font engine that is
capable of supporting several font formats (be they bitmapped or scalable)
through a simple and uniform interface. Its design is modular and allows
independent "font driver" modules to be added, even at runtime, to support
additional formats. It also provides a high-quality anti-aliasing renderer,
an innovative auto-hinting engine, and support for the following font
formats: TrueType Type1, CID-Type 1, Multiple Masters Type 1 OpenType/CFF,
pure CFF, and CEF Windows FNT/FON.

Games/Entertainment
Games/Entertainment :: Turn Based Strategy
About: LGeneral is a turn-based strategy engine heavily inspired by Panzer
General. Move your units each turn and attack your enemies in order to
capture strategic objectives to win a battle. LGeneral uses the SDL
library for graphics and sounds.
Changes: This release contains a few minor enhancements. Most notably, a
segmentation fault has been fixed that happened when a unit with a
transporter tried to move to an unreachable position (due to fuel
shortage).

[030] - MiniUPnP Client and Daemon 1.0-RC9
by nanard (http://freshmeat.net/users/nanard0/)
Thu, Sep 27th 2007 14:06
Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Networking :: Firewalls
About: The MiniUPnP project is a library and a daemon. The library is
aimed to enable applications to use the capabilities of a UPnP Internet
Gateway Device present on the network to forward ports. The daemon adds
the UPnP Internet Gateway Device functionality to a NAT gateway running
OpenBSD/NetBSD/FreeBSD with PF or Linux 2.4.x/2.6.x with netfilter. One of
its most interesting features is to enforce some permissions to allow or
deny redirections, bringing some security to UPnP.
Changes: Makefiles have been improved to support different installation
directories. MiniUPnPc now compiles to both libminiupnpc shared and static
libraries. MiniUPnPd support for multiple LANs has been greatly improved.
MiniUPnPd is now able to clean its ruleset periodically by removing unused
rules.

[031] - Nagios 3.0b4
by Ethan Galstad (http://freshmeat.net/users/nagios/)
Thu, Sep 27th 2007 14:09
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
About: Nagios (formerly Netsaint) is a daemon written in C that is
designed to monitor networked hosts and services. It has the ability to
notify contacts (via email, pager or other methods) when problems arise
and are resolved. Host and service checks are performed by external
"plugins", making it easy to write custom checks in your language of
choice. Several CGIs are included in order to allow you to view the
current and historical status via a Web browser, and a WAP interface is
also provided to allow you to acknowlege problems and disable
notifications from an internet-ready cellphone.
Changes: Several new macros were added, and performance improvements were
made to the cached host check logic. Several bugs were fixed, including
high CPU utilization with null host check commands, segfaults when
canceling scheduled downtime, incorrect performance statistics, and
incorrect object exclusion logic in object definitions.

[038] - SpamTestBuddy 0.95
by Jem Berkes (http://freshmeat.net/users/jberkes/)
Thu, Sep 27th 2007 02:20
Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Filters
About: SpamTestBuddy is a simple, light-weight, multiple-input spam
scoring tool. It is standalone and can be used with simple procmail rules
without root access or daemons. It features built-in support for simple
DNS checks including DNSBL (DNS-based blocklist) queries, and can scan
headers from filters such as SpamProbe, QSF, DSPAM. The configuration is
flexible and easy to edit in a human readable file. Different tests can
add or remove from the total score. You might think of SpamTestBuddy as a
very light version of SpamAssassin.
Changes: An enhanced test definition format was implemented to support
custom weights and fractional weights. It is now possible to search DNSBL
response codes for specific substrings rather than fixed 127.0. responses.
New internal caching of DNSBL queries and responses was added.

Thu, Sep 27th 2007 10:18
Information Management :: Metadata/Semantic Models
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Browsers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search
About: SRESI is a smart bookmark manager. It currently sports both a
command-line and a PHP interface. It works with both the standard
hierarchical trees and the new and fashionable tagged bookmarks. It was
developed as a way to interface both representation systems. SRESI can use
Del.icio.us, Mozilla, Opera, and XBEL bookmarks, and handles a few more
exports besides. Directories and tags are used equivalently, and the final
hierarchies are inferred from actual tag use.
Changes: The tagged set union did not work consistently when an element
was present in both sets. From now on, it always cumulates the tags of
both duplicates, as the add function does. A Windows package is available
again.

[045] - ZoneAdmin 0.2-Beta1
by Rudolph Bott (http://freshmeat.net/users/ZoneAdmin/)
Thu, Sep 27th 2007 10:15
Internet :: Name Service (DNS)
About: ZoneAdmin is a Web interface for the powerDNS name server using the
MySQL backend. It allows you to manage existing zones and add, remove, and
alter new ones, supports on-the-fly input validation, and allows comments
per zone and per record. Furthermore, it keeps a detailed history of
changes and allows you to temporary enable or disable zones without having
to remove them completely. New zones can use templates that contain
predefined records. It is designed to be used with one of Apache's
authentication methods.
Changes: You are now able to add slave zones, and you can edit/delete
multiple records at once, which makes updating zones easier. These
features require testing, and you should not use this release in a
production environment. The annoying Javascript popup that informed the
user about input validation errors has been removed, and replaced by
simple color highlighting of the input fields containing invalid
characters.
