Information Management :: Metadata/Semantic Models
Multimedia :: Video

About: Advene (Annotate Digital Video, Exchange on the NEt) is aimed at
providing a model and a format to share annotations about digital video
documents (movies, courses, conferences, etc.), as well as tools to edit
and visualize the hypervideos generated from both the annotations and the
audiovisual documents. Teachers, moviegoers, etc. can use them to exchange
multimedia comments and analyses about video documents. The project also
aims at studying the way that communities of users (teachers, moviegoers,
students, etc.) will use these self-publishing tools to share their
audiovisual "readings", and to envision new editing and viewing interfaces
for interactive comment and analysis of audiovisual content.

Changes: This versions corrects some bugs and introduces some convience
features such as autocompletion in annotation edition windows, workspace
customization, auto-saving, etc. Mac OS X users can now more easily test
the application, as it is available as a .dmg image.

About: AlphaMail is a mod_perl webmail system with a C++ middleware
component that is intended to make the system highly scalable. It supports
many Unix variants with any RFC-compliant IMAP server (including UW, Cyrus,
and Dovecot).

Changes: Minor bugfixes were made to the address book and the handling of
improperly encoded folder names (which could potentially cause infinite
loops containing memory allocation). A configurable parameter for login
name field length was added.

About: BalanceNG is a modern software IP load balancing solution. It is
small, fast, and easy to use and setup. It offers session persistence,
different distribution methods (Round Robin, Random, Weighted Random,
Least Session, Least Bandwidth, Hash, Agent, and Randomized Agent) and a
customizable UDP health check agent in source code. It supports VRRP to
set up high availability configurations on multiple nodes. It supports
SNMP, integrating the BALANCENG-MIB with Net-SNMPD. It integrates pcap
packet dumping for debugging purposes and allows the implementation of a
"transparent forensic logging bridge".

Changes: A bug in ARP resolving during NAT has been fixed (applied to the
"development" branch as well, resulting in 2.016).

[004] - BeanKeeper 2.3.2
  by Robert (http://freshmeat.net/users/demonofthesystem/)
  Fri, Sep 28th 2007 05:55

Database :: API
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: BeanKeeper (formerly Simple Persistence for Java) is a full
featured, powerful object/relational persistence and query library. It has
a unique philosophy of simpleness and ease of use: it does not require
config files, annotations, code generation, code "enhancing", or any kind
of tools to be used. It handles simple Java beans (or POJOs) and its query
service returns lists. Despite its simpleness, under the hood the library
takes care of all the necessary logic: transaction visibility, result list
paging, keys and ids, table creation/modification, class relations,
inheritance/polymorphism, case sensitiveness, and much more. It currently
supports: Oracle, HSQLDB, MySQL, and PostgreSQL.

Changes: This release fixes multiple "MySQL for Windows" bugs, improves
Oracle support and Oracle paging, adds connection leak detection to the
connection pool code, and fixes a ListImpl reindexing bug.

Text Editors

About: Bibcursed is a simple curses-based editor for BibTeX bibliography
files, especially useful for those who have to maintain a large number of
references for a major piece of documentation, like a PhD thesis. It
performs everyday functions such as adding, removing and viewing reference
entries. Intelligent prompting for fields is used when adding entries so
that authors do not have to rely on memory for knowing which fields can
and cannot be used for different entry types.

Changes: Bugs regarding adding and deleting entries were fixed.

About: clweather is a no bloat, no frills implementation of wmweather for
the command line. The GUI, as well as many other features, has been
stripped out. It will display weather information to stdout.

Changes: The code was extensively reworked. The curl code was greatly
simplified and revamped. malloc generation calls and file generation code
were eliminated when really all that was needed was a couple of strings.
libcurl has a lot of error checking built in already, so most of the
external unneeded stuff was removed. All of the leftover assert debugging
code was removed from wmweather. Bloat was greatly reduced and efficiency
was increased. The entire source file is now only 168 lines.

  Fri, Sep 28th 2007 17:44

Internet
Printing
Software Development :: Libraries

About: CUPS provides a portable printing layer for Unix(r)-based operating
systems. It has been developed to promote a standard printing solution for
all Unix vendors and users. CUPS provides the System V and Berkeley
command line interfaces, and uses the Internet Printing Protocol ("IPP")
as the basis for managing print jobs and queues. The Line Printer Daemon
(LPD) Server Message Block (SMB), and AppSocket (a.k.a. JetDirect)
protocols are also supported with reduced functionality. CUPS adds network
printer browsing and PostScript Printer Description ("PPD") based printing
options to support real world printing under UNIX. It includes an image
file RIP that supports printing of image files to non-PostScript printers.
A customized version of GNU Ghostscript 7.05 for CUPS called ESP
Ghostscript is available separately to support printing of PostScript
files within the CUPS driver framework. Sample drivers for Dymo, EPSON,
HP, and OKIDATA printers are included that use these filters.

Changes: CUPS 1.3.3 fixes some scheduler and localization issues.

About: Das Schaefchen is a lightweight HTTP server for Linux platforms. It
supports the minimum requirements of the HTTP/1.1 protocol and virtual
hosts, basic authentication (which can be used to protect either files or
directories), directory listing, and byte ranges. It is an event-driven
server that runs as a single process with a single thread using
non-blocking I/O. It uses epoll as the event notification mechanism to
multiplex control between active connections.

Software Development
Software Development :: Libraries :: Tcl Extensions

About: eTcl is a "batteries-included" thread-enabled Tcl/Tk runtime
available as a single standalone executable. It includes several popular
extensions (Thread, Sqlite, Zlib, etc.), together with a Tcl wrapper for
the Pixane image  processing library.

Changes: This release relies on the latest Tcl/Tk 8.4.16 core, and up to
date versions of several packages (e.g. SQLite 3.4.2, libpng 1.2.19, tile
and tkhtml3 CVS snapshots, etc). Support for the XFT/Anti-Aliased font
engine has been added, and can be enabled or disabled at runtime. Native
implementations of most usual digest/hash methods (MD5, SHA1, CRC16,
CRC32, etc.) have been introduced for performance. A new package called
Odyce provides an experimental API for dynamic compilation from C code, in
a way similar to critcl but without requiring an external compiler and
linker to be installed on the target machine.

Software Development :: Documentation
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: LiquiBase is a DBMS-independent library for tracking, managing, and
applying database changes. It is built on a simple premise: all database
changes (structure and data) are stored in an XML-based descriptive manner
and checked into source control. While there have been many attempts to
provide a similar tool, LiquiBase aims to provide a solution that supports
merging of changes from multiple developers, works well with code branches,
supports a database refactoring IDE/plugin, and more.

Changes: Major features include <custom> change, <executeCommand> change,
<createProcedure> change, the ability to specify multiple contexts per
change set, improved database diff, and a new Spring migrator.

[038] - ProGuard 4.0
  by Eric Lafortune (http://freshmeat.net/users/lafortune/)
  Fri, Sep 28th 2007 11:09

Software Development :: Build Tools
Software Development :: Code Generators

About: ProGuard is a free Java class file shrinker, optimizer, and
obfuscator. It can detect and remove unused classes, fields, methods, and
attributes. It can then optimize bytecode and remove unused instructions.
Finally, it can rename the remaining classes, fields, and methods using
short meaningless names. The resulting jars are more compact and more
difficult to reverse-engineer. Advantages of ProGuard compared to other
Java shrinkers and obfuscators are compact template-based configuration,
memory efficiency, and speed.

Changes: This release also performs pre-verification for Java Micro
Edition and Java 6. The optimization step propagates constant fields and
arguments, inlines methods, and supports more than 250 new peephole
optimizations. The obfuscation step has more options for repackaging
classes and for processing resource files. The GUI provides tool tips on
all options. Configuration is more flexible, with additional wild cards
and the ability to use annotations. The program provides additional
feedback on potential configuration problems. The documentation and
examples have been updated.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules

About: Libxslt is a C library for GNOME which allows developers to work
with XSLT. It is based on libxml for XML parsing, tree manipulation, and
XPath support. Also included is 'xsltproc', a command line XSLT processor.
The library is written in plain C, making as few assumptions as possible,
and sticking closely to ANSI C/POSIX for easy embedding. It should work on
Linux, Unix, and Windows. Though not designed primarily with performances
in mind, libxslt seems to be a relatively fast processor. It also include
full support for the EXSLT set of extension functions as well as some
common extensions present in other XSLT engines.

Changes: RVT cleanup problems, an exclude-result-prefix bug, and
stylesheet compilation error handling were fixed. Building was improved
with VS2005. Building on AIX was fixed. The security file checks on
Windows were fixed. An --encoding option was added to xsltproc.

[055] - UMLGraph 4.9
  by Diomidis Spinellis (http://freshmeat.net/users/diomidis/)
  Fri, Sep 28th 2007 11:01

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Software Development :: Documentation

About: UMLGraph facilitates the declarative specification and drawing of
UML class and sequence diagrams. One can specify a class design using the
Java syntax complemented by Javadoc tags. Running the UmlGraph doclet on
the specification generates a Graphviz diagram specification that can be
automatically processed to create Postscript, GIF, SVG, JPEG, fig, or
Framemaker drawings. Similarly, sequence diagrams are specified using
declarative pic macros and compiled with the GNU plotutils pic2plot
program into a PNG, PNM, (pseudo) GIF, SVG, AI, Postscript, CGM, FIG, PCL,
HPGL, Regis, or TEK drawing.

Changes: This version offers improved invocation scripts and corresponding
documentation on installing and invoking UmlGraph. In addition, the code

Communications
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Software Development :: Build Tools

About: XINS is a technology used to define, create, and invoke remote
APIs. XINS is specification-oriented. When API specifications are written
(in XML), XINS will transform them to HTML-based documentation and Java
code for both the client-side and the server-side. The communication is
based on HTTP. XINS competes with the complex SOAP technology. Main design
goals include simplicity, scalability, and testability. XINS is not only a
specification technology, but also an application development framework.
It offers transaction logging, unique log documentation, and active code
generation.

Changes: The Web Service can be started with "java -jar <api name>.war"
with an option to start it with a graphical user interface. It is possible
to include or exclude calling convention with the ACLs. The runtime
properties can include other files and the location can be a URL. The
generated build.xml is now much smaller. Several bugs were fixed and small
RFEs have been implemented.
