[001] - Absolute OS 12.1.0 beta1
by Paul Sherman (http://freshmeat.net/users/psherma1/)
Wed, Oct 31st 2007 15:36
About: Absolute is a lightweight Slackware Linux derivative distribution
that uses an Icewm, ROX-Filer window/file manager combination. It comes
with Firefox, The GIMP, MPlayer, K3B, kTorrent, Gaim, Frostwire, Gftp,
StarDict, Skype, and many other titles all set up and ready to run.
Several utilities are included to ease configuration and management. It is
compatible with all Slackware 11 packages and can be installed just like a
Slackware disk, except that you cannot choose which packages to install or
remove, as it just installs everything.
Changes: Based on Slackware-current (hence the Beta), but it is actually
the best tested and integrated 12.x release to date. Xorg 7.3, GIMP 2.4
final, recompilation of about half the distribution including Firefox
2.0.0.8 (with headers and IDL included), new mplayer, and mplayerplug-in
compiled on the distribution itself. An updated multimedia installer and
updated utilities.

by Michael Sweet (http://freshmeat.net/users/easysw/)
Wed, Oct 31st 2007 12:29
Internet
Printing
Software Development :: Libraries
About: CUPS provides a portable printing layer for Unix(r)-based operating
systems. It has been developed to promote a standard printing solution for
all Unix vendors and users. CUPS provides the System V and Berkeley
command line interfaces, and uses the Internet Printing Protocol ("IPP")
as the basis for managing print jobs and queues. The Line Printer Daemon
(LPD) Server Message Block (SMB), and AppSocket (a.k.a. JetDirect)
protocols are also supported with reduced functionality. CUPS adds network
printer browsing and PostScript Printer Description ("PPD") based printing
options to support real world printing under UNIX. It includes an image
file RIP that supports printing of image files to non-PostScript printers.
A customized version of GNU Ghostscript 7.05 for CUPS called ESP
Ghostscript is available separately to support printing of PostScript
files within the CUPS driver framework. Sample drivers for Dymo, EPSON,
HP, and OKIDATA printers are included that use these filters.
Changes: This release fixes a buffer overflow bug along with some
localization, authentication, and printing bugs.

System :: Filesystems
System :: Systems Administration
Utilities
About: Freedup eliminates duplicate files using links and thus reduces the
amount of used disk space within one or more file systems. Freedup searches
all provided file system trees for identical files and links them together.
If the devices differ, a symbolic link is used, otherwise a hard link by
default. Many options allow you to modify the file comparison, the linking
behavior, and the output. The input is either taken from external pipe
input or from an internally generated pipe using find.
Changes: This release provides runtime checks for hash functions and
currently allows a fallback between SHA1, MD5, and SUM. If one or more
executables are not in place, the most reliable available method is
chosen. If none is present, the "-#" option is activated automatically. No
further assertions should occur. Bugs were fixed for AIX and Cygwin. It
turned out that the content of two files was not compared in certain
situations. This was a general problem, currently seen under Cygwin only.
The fix has been verified for Cygwin and Linux.

execution time. So it is hard to use any kind of reflection on the browser
side of an application. To make JavaScript reflectable, some helpers were
created that can memorize class descriptions at compilation time. This
description will later (at runtime) help to manipulate classes, even after
obfuscation.

[031] - Haskell Database Connectivity 1.1.3.0
by John Goerzen (http://freshmeat.net/users/jgoerzen/)
Wed, Oct 31st 2007 12:22
Database :: API
Software Development :: Libraries
About: HDBC provides an abstraction layer between Haskell programs and SQL
relational databases. This lets you write database code once, in Haskell,
and have it work with any number of backend SQL databases (MySQL, Oracle,
PostgreSQL, ODBC-compliant databases, etc.) HDBC is modeled loosely on
Perl's DBI interface, though it has also been influenced by Python's
DB-API v2, JDBC in Java, and HSQL in Haskell.
Changes: This release adds strict versions of several functions. The spec
has been changed to make metadata functions strict. SqlByteString support
has been added.

About: Nomatic*IM provides a service that supports the convenient and
appropriate broadcasting of presence through instant messaging clients. It
provides the flexibility to support multiple IM protocols, IM clients, and
operating systems. From a high-level, what Nomatic*IM does is to figure
out where you are and what you are doing from the sensors that come with
your computing platform. That information is processed with machine
learning techniques to develop a semantic interpretation about the name of
your current place, activity, and social context.
Changes: Learning is aware of active processes and processes with focus.
Learning was improved with greater speed and by ignoring data without
enough support when learning. SQLite is used to store local history. The
following windows were added to the GUI: a dashboard to show users sensor
information, an about dialog, a news window for pushing out announcements,
and a preferences dialog. Support was added for Windows and Linux. A logo
was made for the project. Start-up speed was improved by serializing the

by Radek Podgorny (http://freshmeat.net/users/rpodgorny/)

System
About: Uptimed is an uptime record daemon keeping track of the highest
uptimes the system ever had. Instead of using a pid file to keep sessions
apart from each other, it uses the system boot time. Uptimed has the
ability to inform you of records and milestones through syslog and e-mail,
and comes with a console front end to parse the records, which can also
easily be used to show your records on your Web page.
Changes: More statistics were added.

by pifactorial (http://freshmeat.net/users/pifactorial/)
Wed, Oct 31st 2007 01:53
Database :: Front-Ends
Information Management :: Document Repositories
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
About: Vulpive is webcomic archive software with all of the common
features of other online comics, plus some fairly novel ones. Comics can
be uploaded for particular dates in advance, and will appear at midnight.
There is a separate "calendar view" where comics can be browsed by
thumbnail. Three different layout modes are available. Commentary for
individual comics is supported. Plot arcs can be organized into chapters.
It is easily skinnable by anyone with basic HTML or CSS experience. An
automatic RSS feed is provided.
Changes: A formatting bug that caused the calendar not to display properly
was fixed. The title-to-filename conversion was made more thorough using
regular expressions. Additional minor cleanup was done.

[063] - WordPress 2.3.1 (Release)
by Dougal Campbell (http://freshmeat.net/users/emc3/)

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: News/Diary
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
About: WordPress is a state-of-the-art, semantic, personal publishing
platform with a focus on aesthetics, Web standards, and usability. It was
born out of a desire for an elegant, well-architected personal publishing
system. While primarily geared towards functioning as a Weblog, WordPress
is also a flexible CMS capable of managing many types of Web sites. In
addition to the basic blog functions, it also has an integrated link
manager (e.g. for blogrolls), file attachments, XFN support, support for
stand-alone pages, Atom and RSS feeds for both content and comments,
blogging API support (Atom Publishing Protocol, Blogger, MetaWeblog, and
Movable Type APIs), spam blocking features, advanced cruft-free URL
generation, a flexible theme system, and an advanced plugin API.
Changes: This release contains a security update that is important for
sites that still run with register_globals turned on (which you shouldn't
do anyway). There are also several bugfixes and enhancements, including
improved SQL performance for tag intersection queries, tagging support for
Windows Live Writer, and improved email address extraction in wp-mail.php
(post-by-email).
