Information Management

About: AgileWiki is a program that explores new knowledge representation.
It is an attempt to implement, at least in part, Norm Kashdan's Rolonic
Theory, a profoundly different approach to time and knowledge
representation. CowDb is a high-speed object store over which the next
generation of AgileWiki will be written. COODBMS is a Copy-on-write OODBMS
based on Rolonics.

Changes: There's a new TEXT role, with full support for bi-directional XML
transformations, as well as a programmer guide on the topic. A bug was
fixed in the wellKnown method: it was not using a unique name for the new
node.

About: Agilian is a complete modeling environment designed for applying
agile modeling. Agilian removes the limitation of notations. Architects,
project managers, analysts, designers, and developers can express their
ideas freely with any notation which is suitable.

Changes: New features include support for mind mapping diagrams for
organizing ideas and thoughts, the ability to define Requirement types and
display them in Tabular view, more robust annotation support via Callout
and Freehand shape, the ability to open up alternative views from models
or shapes, the ability to create translated copies of a model through the
use of Nicknamer, and Perforce integration. In addition, Report Writer has
been upgraded to use a newer version of the engine, which makes it more
stable and allows it to edit both the model and report simultaneously.

[006] - AROUNDMe collaboration server 1.6
  by tom calthrop (http://freshmeat.net/users/barnraiser/)
  Wed, Feb 6th 2008 02:37

About: AROUNDMe collaboration server is a solution for anyone wishing to
create collaborative social spaces on the Web. You can create multiple
collaborative groups and Web sites. Each group can create a multiple-page
collaborative Web site. They get social tools such as a guestbook (a
wall), a group blog, a forum, and a wiki which they can drop into Web
pages. Groups can be private or public. People can connect to a group to
contribute using OpenID. They get tracking tools such as forum digest and
blog RSS feeds.

Changes: AROUNDMe collaboration server now comes with a simple language
pack from which multiple languages can be created and added so that each
group can be in a local language. Installation was simplified, so the
person installing can now override the domain name, allowing them to
install first and then point the domain to the directory at a later stage.
Tagcloud font sizes were added to allow for CSS size styling.

Extended Edition also includes a PDF reader for importing and editing,
along with FDF support, verification for digital signatures and text
extraction. Both variations offer full Unicode support, encryption,
embedded TrueType and Type1 fonts, barcodes, hyperlinks, and spot and
calibrated color.

Changes: Huge improvements to memory use across the board, mainly when
loading objects (including PDFs) from a File or FileInputStream. Big speed
improvements when reading and writing PDFs. Reading has been parallelized
to make use of multi-core environments: the number of threads can be set
explicitly with the "org.faceless.pdf2.Threads" System property. An option
to parallelize TIFF rendering in PDFParser.writeAsTIFF() has been added.
Applying a digital signature has been improved from a two-pass operation
to a nearly single pass one.

Adaptive Technologies
Software Development :: Embedded Systems
System :: Installation/Setup

About: Fakeroot-ng runs a program while fooling it into thinking it is
running with root privileges. When the program does something that only
root can do (e.g. create a device file), fakeroot-ng emulates the
appropriate system calls so that the program gets a consistent view of its
actions. Unlike the original fakeroot, fakeroot-ng uses the ptrace
interface, which means that it will (soon) support emulating chroot jails
properly.

Changes: The package is fairly stable (for the platforms it supports). It
already supports running "strace" within the fake root (no support for
strace's -f option yet). There is no support for "chroot" yet.

[024] - Hotwire 0.710
  by Colin Walters (http://freshmeat.net/users/colinwalters/)
  Wed, Feb 6th 2008 00:56

Software Development

About: Hotwire is an object-oriented hypershell. It is a shell designed
for systems programming (files, processes), and thus it is in the same
conceptual category of software as the Unix shell/terminal and Windows
PowerShell. The goal of the Hotwire project is to create a better systems
programming shell than both Unix and PowerShell. It is called a
hyper-shell because Hotwire blends the concepts of a traditional shell
with a modern graphical user interface display.

Changes: Internal line processing now includes newlines. ~/.bash_history
is imported. Non-UTF8 locales can be handled. Sorting is done by the file
renderer. The "open" action now works on Windows. The "apply" builtin was
added. The "view" builtin was added, which launches an editor in read-only
mode. "kill" now optionally takes Process objects as input. "rm" has a new
--unlink option to really delete.

Education
Education :: Computer Aided Instruction (CAI)
Education :: Testing

About: LON-CAPA (The LearningOnline Network with CAPA) is a learning
content and course management system. It offers an underlying shared
content pool from which instructors across departmental and institutional
boundaries can assemble granular learning content for their courses. It
has strong assessment capabilities, both formative (homework and in-class
using wireless PDAs) and summative (online and bubblesheet exams), with a
one-source multiple-target strategy for the content. It offers students
portfolio space in which they can stage materials for submission to
projects, and provides a number of tools for synchronous and asynchronous
student-student and student-faculty communication. LON-CAPA scales well
with number of students, as load-balancing is possible across the whole
network of servers at participating institutions.

Changes: The validation of bubble sheet quizzes now again correctly
accommodates option responses, ranking responses, and match responses.
When a course is cloned between two semesters, usernames of course
personnel are not automatically cloned alongside the materials and other
settings. The fact that problems in "practice mode" are not graded is now
clearly pointed out to the students.

[057] - task spooler 0.5.1
  by viric (http://freshmeat.net/users/viric/)
  Wed, Feb 6th 2008 14:25

System

About: task spooler is a Unix batch system where the tasks spooled run one
after the other. Each user in each system has his own job queue. The tasks
are run in the correct context (that of enqueue) from any shell/process,
and its output/results can be easily watched. It is very useful when you
know that your commands depend on a lot of RAM, a lot of disk use, give a
lot of output, or for whatever reason it's better not to run them at the
same time.

Changes: The custom implementation of 'tail' has been fixed.

[058] - Tcl/Tk 8.5.1
  by Andres Garcia (http://freshmeat.net/users/andresgarci/)
  Wed, Feb 6th 2008 10:04

Software Development :: Embedded Systems
Software Development :: Interpreters
Software Development :: Testing

About: Tcl provides a portable scripting environment for Unix, Windows,
and Macintosh that supports string processing and pattern matching, native
file system access, shell-like control over other programs, TCP/IP
networking, timers, and event-driven I/O. Tcl has traditional programming
constructs like variables, loops, procedures, namespaces, error handling,
script packages, and dynamic loading of DLLs. Tk provides portable GUIs on
UNIX, Windows, and Macintosh. A powerful widget set and the concise
scripting interface to Tk make it a breeze to develop sophisticated user
interfaces.

Changes: This release improves [lsort] performance, repairs a buffer
overflow in GIF handling code, corrects broken regexp engine usage that
lost backref support, fixes binary reads from stacked channels, fixes
several crashes, and solves memory leaks in literals in expressions.

About: tcptrack is a packet sniffer, which passively watches for
connections on a specified network interface, tracks their states, and
lists them in a manner similar to the Unix 'top' command. It displays
source and destination addresses and ports, connection state, idle time,
and bandwidth  usage.

Changes: This release adds a new sort option: by total bytes transferred.
This also adds a way to cycle through all sort options.

[060] - TinyaML 0.3
  by Damien Leroux (http://freshmeat.net/users/beublo23/)
  Wed, Feb 6th 2008 08:51

Software Development :: Assemblers
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Debuggers

About: TinyaML is a virtual machine, a compiler, and a compiler- compiler,
powered by the abstract parser tinyap. It is endian-safe and allows easy
bindings of new C APIs into the virtual machine. The VM executes wordcode
with a virtual threading model and features a garbage collector. TinyaML
allows the user to compile and run assembly code, or plug new grammars for
higher-level languages into the parser and implement the methods to compile
their ASTs.

Changes: The opcode handling in grammar and compiler was refactored, so
compilation is about 5 times faster now. Raw exception handling was
implemented, and everything should be ready for object-oriented language
definition. The debugger has improved a bit but still lacks essential
features.

Database :: API
Office/Business :: Financial :: Investment

About: The trading-shim is a database driven connector API that provides a
persistent store SQL backend database, translates operations to and from
the Interactive Brokers Java TWS API. It can act as an interpreter for
commands, and permits downstream clients to access several worldwide
securities markets and exchanges (stocks, options, futures, bonds, Forex)
for "tick" data and history (intraday, and EoD). It also allows clients to
supervise trades of securities and more.

Changes: This release addresses the problem with orders in mapping of line
items to order IDs, which led to individual line items having multiple
order IDs.

About: VoiceXML::Client is a library that provides Perl programs with the
ability to act as a user agent that fetches Voice Extensible Markup
Language (VoiceXML) documents, parses them, and then executes the
instructions therein by playing prompts and collecting user DTMF
input/voice recordings through a handle to some type of telephone or other

[064] - VWM 1.3.0
  by TragicWarrior (http://freshmeat.net/users/TragicWarrior/)
  Wed, Feb 6th 2008 10:12

Desktop Environment
System :: Shells

About: VWM is an extensible window manager for the console. Built on top
of libpseudo and libviper, VWM is more visual alternative to Screen.
Mozilla-style plugins allow for simple expandability: follow a few simple
API rules and drop your shared object into a directory to have it added to
the main menu.

Changes: A major overhaul of the help system. The old "help-bar" has been
replaced by an "information ticker" on the main panel. There is a new set
of functions to control the scrolling marquee panel (not 100%
implemented). This release has been sync with libviper 1.3.1 (or higher).
Delete key functionality has been added to ptyterm and the terminfo entry
for vwmterm so that bash command/history editing will work correctly. An
environment issue with ptyterm that caused some environment variables to
be trampled has been fixed. gcc -O2 optimizations have been added to
Makefile, and this release has moved to the C99 standard (mostly for long
long int).
