[001] - Advanced Bash Scripting Guide 5.2 (Stable)
  by M. Leo Cooper (http://freshmeat.net/users/thegrendel/)
  Fri, Mar 14th 2008 01:17

Education
Software Development :: Documentation
System :: Systems Administration

About: The Advanced Bash Scripting Guide is both a reference and a
tutorial on shell scripting. This comprehensive book (the equivalent of
880+ print pages) covers almost every aspect of shell scripting. It
contains 340 profusely commented illustrative examples, a number of
tables, and a cross-linked index/glossary. Not just a shell scripting
tutorial, this book also provides an introduction to basic programming
techniques, such as sorting and recursion. It is well suited for either
individual study or classroom use. It covers Bash, up to and including
version 3.2x.

Changes: Many bugfixes and stylistic cleanups were done. Four new example
scripts were added. A new subsection on version 3.2 Bash update was added.
Explanations of certain difficult concepts were clarified. This is an
important update.

Communications :: Email :: Post-Office
Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: IMAP
Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: POP3

About: BEJY is a modular server application. It is packaged, by default,
as a Web application container and mail server with SSL. It has
functionality similar to inetd, and has some helper classes/functions to
ease the implementation of new protocols. It provides a generic
multithreaded TPC/IP server implementation with optional SSL support,
covering the complete connection and thread management. Each supported
service provides its protocol implementation. The current version comes
with HTTP, SMTP, POP3, and IMAP protocol implementations. The HTTP
protocol implementation also contains a servlet engine, a JSP 1.2 engine,
a handler to invoke CGI, and other useful things. The mail protocols
require a database using JDBC, as MySQL, MSSQL, and others.

[014] - Crate Game Engine 20080313
  by Jason Turner (http://freshmeat.net/users/lefticus/)
  Fri, Mar 14th 2008 05:24

Games/Entertainment
Software Development :: Libraries

About: The Crate Game Engine is a game engine that is designed to make
creating games trivial. The rendering and scripting engines are removed
from the game engine to make the specialization of games as easy as
possible. Currently, scripting support is implemented to allow a Lua
script to be put directly in the game file, which can be validated as XML.
Multiplayer text based adventure-style games can be played with the
existing console rendering engine.

Changes: Crate Game Engine has been completely rewritten from scratch
after realizing that the current direction was not going to scale as
intended. This release represents the first working release after the
rewrite. No games are currently playable, but it is a working
proof-of-concept of the new asynchronous message passing-based engine.

  Fri, Mar 14th 2008 13:05

Desktop Environment :: File Managers
Desktop Environment :: Tools
Software Development :: Libraries

About: Envoy is an "open and display things" library. It provides an
interface for storing file associations and launching files based on those
associations. This comes with a wrapper program to enable desktop users to
benefit from the file associations without developers adding explicit
support. It also supports opening any URI transparently, as long as the
corresponding protocol support exists: applications that want simple read
(and write, depending on the protocol) access to files, wherever they are,
can use the envoy API to do so.

Changes: This release adds a proof-of-concept for URI/protocol handling
via plugins. It renames the frontend to "consul", and includes a working
pc file. There are small updates to the GTK frontend. The project
structure and build process have been cleaned up a lot.

[019] - Florence 0.1.1
  by François Agrech (http://freshmeat.net/users/agrech/)
  Fri, Mar 14th 2008 13:00

Desktop Environment :: Gnome

About: Florence is a scalable on-screen virtual keyboard for GNOME that
stays out of your way when you don't need it. It is useful if you can't
use a real keyboard either because of a handicap, disease, broken
keyboard, or tablet PC but you can use a pointing device. It aims at being
easy and pretty.

Changes: Some info bubbles have been added and some bugs have been fixed.
The biggest changes are internal. The layout key file is now an XML (XSD
validated) file instead of a basic key file. It makes florence dependant
on libxml. This allows more complex changes in the future layout. Future
versions will include extensions like function keys, arrow keys and a
numpad support as well as eye-candy features like SVG keys and composite
effects.

interface.

Changes: This is a maintenance release, so no new features have been
added. This will be the last stable release based on FreeBSD 6.2.
consolehm sensor support was removed because it doesn't work or recognize
up-to-date hardware. WebGUI uses NiftyCubes for rounded corners with CSS

suitable for creating DVDs. A simple DVD authoring tool is included as
well. You need to have mplayer, mencoder, and dvdauthor installed in order
to run gAny2DVD.

Changes: This release adds an option for adding black borders around the
video (expand). Aspect info is restored, as dvdauthor lacked it. Better
construction of the MEncoder command. .tgz and .rpm packages. Insertion of
'autoaspect' instead of 16/9 or 4/3, as it seems to keep the a_ratio
correct. 'expand' has been removed from menc encoding. The vbitrate value

More complex output can be created by relying on GLE's scripting language,
which is full featured with subroutines, variables, and logic control. GLE
relies on LaTeX for text output and supports mathematical formulae in
graphs and figures.

Changes: This release fixes a problem with reading certain JPEG files, one
with plotting non-square height maps, and one with rotated LaTeX formulas.
It includes fixes for compilation with GCC 4.3 and has better support for
path names with special characters.

[032] - ns4 4.0(7)
  by Chris Mason (http://freshmeat.net/users/chrimaso/)
  Fri, Mar 14th 2008 10:09

Utilities

About: ns4 is a configuration management tool which allows the automated
backup of just about anything, but it was designed for routers and
switches. If you are able to log into it through a CLI, you can back it
up. Commands are defined within a configuration file, and when they are
executed, the output is sent to a series of FTP servers for archiving. As
well as archiving configurations, it allows scripts to be run on nodes;
this allows configurations to be applied en masse and allows conditional
logic so different bits of scripts are run on different nodes.

Changes: This release adds support for a null proxy, which removes the
requirement of having to bounce through a proxy server if the node is
directly reachable. It adds support for cartridge implied tags that are
combined with the node defined tags, which allows vendor-specific tags. It
also includes various bugfixes and cleanups.

[043] - tenshi 0.10
  by Andrea Barisani (http://freshmeat.net/users/lcars/)
  Fri, Mar 14th 2008 10:02

System :: Monitoring

About: tenshi (formerly wasabi) is a log monitoring program designed to
watch a log file for lines matching user defined regular expressions and
report on the matches. The regular expressions are assigned to queues that
have an alert interval and a list of mail recipients. Queues can be set to
send a notification as soon as there is a log line assigned to them, or to
send periodic reports. Additionally, uninteresting fields in the log lines
(such as PID numbers) can be masked with the standard regular expression
grouping operators ( ). This allows cleaner and more readable reports. All
reports are separated by hostname and all messages are condensed when
possible.

Changes: The option includedir now skips dotfiles. The PID file is now
created in debug, profile, and foreground modes. An incorrect UID check
not handling the root user has been fixed. Buggy time_to_die, buggy
tail_multiple option parsing, empty report sending if the filter program
returns no output, and a bug regarding unmatched subpatterns have been
fixed. This release dies before the pipe if tail_file is not readable,
which prevents an fd leak. IO::Select has been replaced with
IO::BufferedSelect, which fixes parsing delay of buffered lines.
