[001] - Absolute OS 12.1 RC1
by Paul Sherman (http://freshmeat.net/users/psherma1/)
Wed, Apr 9th 2008 13:47
About: Absolute Linux is a lightweight Slackware derivative that uses an
Icewm, pcmanfm, ROX-Filer, ivman, and others to create a lightweight yet
easy to use distribution. Installation is text-based but simplified, and
all packages are installed at once. It can run on a Pentium MMX with 64MB
of RAM (PII 400 with 128MB recommended). It features ease of browsing any
connected device in pcmanfm and an auto-popup menu for inserted playable
media. "Restricted" codecs are available to those eligible via a root-user
installer. Along with CD2 there is a large range of software compiled on
and for Absolute, including OpenOffice, Mplayer, GIMP, and K3B.
Changes: Enhanced pcmanfm replaces ROX as the default file manager. Rox is
still available, and runs desktop and icons. Wicd runs wireless (if enabled
in the services menu). Ivman deals with playable media. Kernel 2.6.24.4 is
included. Ctrl_Alt+Esc can close X if needed (since icewm and the current
Xorg don't play well together with Ctrl+Alt+backspace). Pdfedit has been
added. Hplip is working for use with an HP printer to get ink levels,
cleaning utilities, etc. Most packages (the toolchain, certainly) are up
to date with Slackware current except where there were issues with running
software.

Wed, Apr 9th 2008 10:23
Software Development :: Quality Assurance
Software Development :: Refactoring
About: CScout is a source code analyzer and refactoring browser for
collections of C programs. It can process workspaces of multiple projects,
mapping the complexity introduced by the C preprocessor back into the
original C source code files. CScout performs an analysis of C source code
that is more detailed and accurate than current compilers and linkers, as
it takes into account the identifier scopes introduced by the C
preprocessor and the C language proper scopes and namespaces.
Changes: This version calculates many new file and function-related
metrics to assist in the evaluation of the code's maintainability. A
couple of gcc extensions have been added. Support for various Microsoft C
extensions now allows CScout to process more Microsoft-platform C code,
like the complete Windows Research Kernel (WRK). Finally, this version
fixes some small language-related corner cases.

[012] - Expect-lite 3.1.1
by Craig Miller (http://freshmeat.net/users/cvmiller/)
Wed, Apr 9th 2008 08:06
Software Development :: Quality Assurance
About: Expect-lite is a wrapper for expect, created to make expect
programming even easier. The wrapper permits the creation of expect script
command files by using special character(s) at the beginning of each line
to indicate the expect-lite action. Basic expect-lite scripts can be
created by simply cutting and pasting text from a terminal window into a
script, and adding '>' '
Changes: Command line arguments were added to permit passing login user
and password. Using ssh keys is recommended, but the user may still be
different than the user running the script. Using the password option is
inherently insecure, as the password is in the clear (anyone can read it).

Wed, Apr 9th 2008 07:37
System :: Networking :: LDAP
System :: Systems Administration
About: MDS (Mandriva Directory Server), along with the Mandriva Management
Console (MMC), is a powerful system that allows developers, system
administrators, and other software vendors to manage users, groups, and
their associated policies in both OpenLDAP server and Fedora Directory
Server which allows multi-master replication. Its highly ergonomic
interface design makes it very easy to use, and delegation of
administration enables medium size organization to adopt MDS.
Changes: The MMC infrastructure has been updated and is now the main
framework of another Mandriva product called "Pulse 2". Pulse 2 is
intended to provide application and update deployment mechanisms for large
to very large organizations. MDS now features account provisioning from
multiple sources (including LDAP and databases). For example, an external
LDAP or a GLPI account database can both be used to authenticate and
create new users in the MDS. Samba shares and Samba service management
have been improved.

[037] - Medical Imaging Interaction Toolkit 0.8
by imipak (http://freshmeat.net/users/imipak/)
Wed, Apr 9th 2008 16:19
Scientific/Engineering :: Medical Science Apps.
About: The Medical Imaging Interaction Toolkit (MITK) is a C++ class
library which aims at supporting the development of leading-edge medical
imaging software with a high degree of interaction. It includes a QT-based
demo application showing level set segmentation, volumetry, and a
step-by-step tutorial. It combines VTK, ITK, and the pic-based-libraries
of the Div. Medical and Biological Informatics of the DKFZ, and adds those
features that are most important for developing interactive medical imaging
software covered neither by VTK nor ITK.
Changes: Slice-by-slice segmentation including interpolation between
segmented slices has been added. MPR planes are rotatable. There is a GUI
for basic RAW image import. Always-available modules for standard views
and selection of slices have been added. There is a Level-Of-Detail
mechanism for volume rendering. Rendering of multiple
overlapping/semi-transparent image-slices in 3D is supported. There are
numerous bugfixes.

[041] - n2n 1.1
by Luca Deri (http://freshmeat.net/users/deri/)
Wed, Apr 9th 2008 01:00
System :: Networking
About: n2n (network-to-network) is a layer-two peer-to-peer virtual
private network (VPN) that allows users to exploit features typical of P2P
applications at network instead of application level. This means that users
can gain native IP visibility (e.g. two PCs belonging to the same n2n
network can ping each other) and be reachable with the same network IP
address regardless of the network where they currently belong.
Changes: A bug that prevented n2n from communicating with direct peers was
fixed. Major code changes were made to pave for support of IPv6. Big-endian
platforms are supported (in addition to x86). Updates were made to the
Linux port so that it works like Mac OS X or Win32.

Wed, Apr 9th 2008 10:26
Internet
Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers
About: Stunnix JS-Obfus protects your JavaScript code from potential
analyzing/studying/reworking by unwanted parties. It's both an obfuscator
and encoder for the JavaScript/JScript source code. It converts the
JavaScript/JScript source files into highly mangled and obfuscated form,
making it extremely difficult to study, analyse, reuse, and re-work for
competitors or customers, while fully retaining functionality of the
original source code, and then encodes it afterwards, making it completely
unreadable. There are a lot of options to control all aspects of code
hiding, and full support for all syntax constructs. It is designed to be
multi-module aware.
Changes: YUI Compressor has been included to allow minifying of local
variable names (this works not only in raw files, but in .html and
php/.jsp/.asp files, for client-side and server-side JavaScript). A
native bundle has been created for Mac OS X. A bug with support for the
RUNAT attribute has been fixed. Many improvements in the Project Manager

Multimedia :: Graphics
Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization
About: The Visualization ToolKit (VTK) is an object oriented software
system for 3D computer graphics, image processing, and visualization. VTK
includes a textbook, a C++ class library, and several interpreted
interface layers including Tcl/Tk, Java, and Python. VTK supports a wide
variety of visualization algorithms including scalar, vector, tensor,
texture, and volumetric methods. It also supports advanced modeling
techniques like implicit modeling, polygon reduction, mesh smoothing,
cutting, contouring, and Delaunay triangulation. Moreover, dozens of
imaging algorithms have been integrated into the system. This allows
mixing 2D imaging / 3D graphics algorithms and data.
Changes: Assorted minor bugfixes.
