[001] - Altse Internet Search Engine 2008-04-29
  by Jari Tuominen (http://freshmeat.net/users/jerofpanic/)
  Mon, May 5th 2008 06:53

Database
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search

About: ALTSE is an alternative search engine technology. It can index up
to a couple million Web pages. Altse does not aim to replace existing
search engine technologies such as Google, Yahoo, and so on. Instead, it
aims to provide an affordable alternative to index Web pages for small
size businesses and organizations.

Changes: A central configuration file has been put into use more widely in
all applications. The search engine has been tested and developed further
to achieve faster searches and faster indexing. Some major bugs in the
search have been identified and removed. Installation instructions were
added, along with a couple of scripts that will aid in the installation,
although the process is still mainly manual.

[002] - BG-Tiny Linux Bootdisk 0.8

  Mon, May 5th 2008 17:08

System :: Installation/Setup
System :: Operating System :: Linux Distributions :: Floppy-Based
System :: Recovery Tools

About: BG-Tiny Linux Bootdisk is a Linux bootdisk that does not use a
ramdisk, so it will run on computers with very little RAM. It is basically
a somewhat extended fork of Tiny Linux Bootdisk. It is based on Linux 2.4
series, uClibc, and BusyBox. It includes dosfsprogs, e2fsprogs, gpart,
lilo, and ms-sys. Supported filesystems are ext2, ext3, iso9660, tmpfs,
and vfat.

Changes: The Linux kernel has been updated to 2.4.36.3. The devfsd applet
has been removed from busybox, since it is no longer needed. The init
applet has been removed from busybox, and an extra busybox compiled that
contains only init and halt/poweroff/reboot. This saves a lot of RAM,
since not all busybox code has to be kept in RAM when running init. When
compared to version 0.7, the total amount of free RAM (free low RAM +
buffers + cached) is now 844kb instead of 772kb on a machine with 4 MB of
RAM.

About: ccurve_create.tcl is a TCL script (plus associated csh scripts)
that makes it is possible to calculate cooling curves (plasma
emissivities, in units of erg cm^3 s^-1) as a function of plasma
temperature using the hot plasma codes available in the XSPEC spectral
fitting program. Element-or-line-specific cooling functions can also be
created. These can be used in hydrodynamical simulations to assess the
total cooling rate, calculate the luminosity in a specific
wavelength/energy range, or more generally to calculate X-ray or UV line
diagnostics.

  by Chris Cappuccio (http://freshmeat.net/users/chrisc/)
  Mon, May 5th 2008 10:35

System :: Installation/Setup

About: Flashdist is an embedded OpenBSD installer for flash disks, hard
disks, and pseudo disks. It keeps the entire system mounted read-only
during normal operation for minimal chance of failure. It installs an
entire set of system utilities and manual pages (targeted towards
networking features) in less than 32MB of disk or flash space. The
distribution list can be customized to target other applications, or to
use even less space.

Changes: This release adds a flag to flashdist that disables SSH private
key generation. Use this flag in flashimgbld. SSH key generation has been
moved ahead of nsh execution (for current nsh.) In /etc/nshrc, sshd is
active by default. Outdated items have been removed from kernel
configurations. All disk images on the Web site now have SSH private keys
removed (and will auto-generate on first boot.)

  Mon, May 5th 2008 11:13

Software Development :: Libraries

About: libmemcached is a C client library for interfacing to a memcached
server. It has been designed to be light on memory usage, thread safe and
to provide full access to server side methods. It also implements several
command line tools: memcat, memflush, memrm, memstat, and memslap (for
load generation). The library has been designed to allow for different
hashing methods on keys, partitioning by keys, and to use consistent
hashing for distribution.

Changes: New consistent distribution tests. A memory leak when a server
constantly fails has been fixed. There is a fix in the watchpoint macro.
The default timeout has been changed to 1 second for poll timeouts. Wheel
uses less memory/dynamic allocation for size (no longer limited to 512
hosts by default). A memslap memory leak has been fixed. Ketama
distribution has been added. An assert.h compile problem on CentOS has
been fixed.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: LimeSurvey (formerly PHPSurveyor) is a Web application that
interacts with MySQL, MSSQL, or Postgres to develop surveys, publish
surveys, and collect responses to surveys. Once a survey has been created,
data can be inserted into the survey either by a "pretty" public screen
which presents each question one at a time, or by a quick and nasty data
entry screen. It includes the capacity to generate individualized
"tokens", so that invitations can be issued to participants. It also has
the capacity to set conditions on whether questions will display
(branching), numerous question types, and a basic statistics function.

Changes: Updates to Spanish, German, French, Italian, and Croatian
language files. Fixes for several bugs when trying to send HTML invitation
email. fixes for numerous smaller bugs.

  Mon, May 5th 2008 10:41

Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)
Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: IMAP

About: OfflineIMAP is a tool to simplify email reading. It allows you to
read the same mailbox from multiple computers and ensures that your
changes will be automatically reflected on all computers. You can use
various mail clients to read a single box or read mail while offline with
full synchronization when you reconnect. You can read IMAP mail with
readers that lack IMAP support (same goes for SSL). OfflineIMAP's
multithreaded synchronization algorithm performs between 10 and 60 times
faster than many mail readers' internal IMAP support, and it can be used
even with mail readers that support IMAP already. There are five available
user interface modules, including scripted execution, an interactive
terminal interface, and GUI interfaces.

  Mon, May 5th 2008 10:38

System :: Networking
System :: Shells

About: NSH consolidates configuration for interfaces, bridging, routing,
PF packet filtering, NAT, queueing, BGP, OSPF, RIP, IPsec, DHCP, DVMRP,
SNMP, relayd, and NTP. It presents the user with a vaguely Cisco-like
interface with all configuration in one easy to read text list. It also
gives the user access to system information and diagnostics. NSH replaces
the userland commands that handle these functions, and talks directly to
the OpenBSD kernel (or to the control utilities for external managed
daemons.)

Changes: Command completion for first level and most second level
commands. ftp-proxy, sshd, and inetd handlers (no options yet, just
on/off) and a resolv.conf handler (with local-control or dhcp-control.)
Various bugfixes. Daemon controls including SSH, NTP, BGP, and OSPF are
now production-tested and considered reliable.

  Mon, May 5th 2008 14:30

Information Management
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: P4A (PHP For Applications) is a RAD and object oriented PHP
framework for building event-driven stateful Web applications. It features
tableless HTML, accesskey support, transparent AJAX support, auto data type
recognition, UTF-8 support, advanced i18n/l10n support, handheld "zero
code" support, "zero code" printing via advanced CSS2, and PEAR
integration.

Changes: The saveUploads() method was moved to P4A_Data_Source.
P4A_DB::quote() method's 2nd parameter "autoquote" is now false by
default, solving some problems with P4A_Data_Field::getSQLValue() and
getSQLNewValue(). When P4A_DB_Source needs a quoted value, it uses
P4A_DB->quote() with autoquote turned on. The P4A_DB::quote() method, if
the autoquote parameter is on, always encloses the value within single
quotes. jQuery::form was updated to 2.0.8. jQuery::iFixPNG was updated to
2.1. P4A_Menu's CSS was changed a bit, solving a bug with IE6.
P4A_DB_Navigator movements were disabled (due to the unavailable jQuery
UI).

[034] - Plash 1.19
  by mseaborn (http://freshmeat.net/users/mseaborn/)
  Mon, May 5th 2008 11:17

Security
System :: Filesystems
System :: Operating System

About: Plash is a sandbox for running GNU/Linux programs with minimum
privileges. It is suitable for running both command line and GUI programs.
It can dynamically grant Gtk-based GUI applications access rights to
individual files that you want to open or edit. This happens transparently
through the Open/Save file chooser dialog box, by replacing
GtkFileChooserDialog. Plash virtualizes the file namespace and provides
per-process/per-sandbox namespaces. It can grant processes read-only or
read-write access to specific files and directories, mapped at any point
in the filesystem namespace. It does not require modifications to the
Linux kernel.

Changes: The build system for PlashGlibc has been changed to integrate
better with glibc's normal build process. As a result, it is easier to
build Plash on architectures other than i386, and this is the first
release to support AMD-64. The forwarding of stdin/stdout/stderr that was
introduced in the previous release caused a number of bugs that should now
be fixed.

[035] - QMC2 0.2 beta 2
  by Prian (http://freshmeat.net/users/prianthefist/)
  Mon, May 5th 2008 10:39

System :: Emulators

About: M.A.M.E. Catalog / Launcher II (also referred to as QMC2) is the
successor of one of the first XMAME GUI frontends available, QMamecat
(derived from MAMECAT, which was text-only). QMC2 has been rebuilt from
scratch as a Qt 4 project. Parts of the design and code were inspired by
its predecessor. The new design was made as flexible as possible to
minimize dependencies from frontend- and CLI-related MAME changes, which
was a major deficiency of QMamecat. QMC2 uses a template-based MAME
configuration scheme, which can easily be enhanced with additional command
line options (defined in an XML template file).

Changes: A Polish translation of the emulator options template has been
completed, as well as a French translation. The template reader for
emulator options has been improved (using QXmlStreamReader), and template
syntax has changed to a new format to allow for easier translation (this
format is not compatible with older versions of QMC2). The game's short
name (the game ID) is now also included in the gamelist and can be used
for sorting.

[038] - samhain 2.4.4
  by rainer (http://freshmeat.net/users/rainer/)
  Mon, May 5th 2008 14:40

Security

About: samhain is a daemon that can check file integrity, search the file
tree for SUID files, and detect kernel module rootkits (Linux only). It
can be used either standalone or as a client/server system for centralized
monitoring, with strong (192-bit AES) encryption for client/server
connections and the option to store databases and configuration files on
the server. For tamper resistance, it supports signed
database/configuration files and signed reports/audit logs. It has been
tested on Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris, AIX, HP-UX, and Unixware.

Changes: It is possible to store the full content of (small) files in the
baseline database, which allows this release to determine what has changed
in a file. A couple of bugs have been fixed, and the mount check and
process check modules are supported on OpenBSD.

  Mon, May 5th 2008 11:15

Database :: API
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: Widget Sets

About: SPTK (Simply Powerful Toolkit) is a cross-platform toolkit that
provides a set of C++ classes for fast and easy application development.
It provides GUI components that use FLTK, and features database support
with seamless connection to GUI components. There are drivers for use of
SQLite and PostgreSQL directly, as well as support for other database
engines through UnixODBC. SPTK includes many classes for working with
strings, dynamic arrays, and maps, and is faster and has a smaller
footprint than STL. It also supports reading, writing, and creating Excel
7 files, high-level GUI components with dataset support, support for
automatic layouts, and support for Aspell.

Changes: This release introduces a new tool: sql2cpp. Sql2Cpp reads SQL
scripts that create stored procedures and generates C++ source files.
Every C++ source file defines a single class that corresponds to an SQL
script file. Every method implements a single stored procedure call.
Sql2Cpp tries to support strong type control of parameters and returned
data. This is achieved by using classes for DB-specific types such as
table and view records.
