freshmeat.net newsgroups retiring soon
by Patrick Lenz (http://freshmeat.net/users/scoop/)
Section: freshmeat

Way back when it was still in fashion (no religious wars please) to read
your news in a newsreader, freshmeat.net was one of the few sites that
distributed its articles and release announcements via the wonders of NNTP.
And we still do that today (with a minor interruption when we moved
datacenters). But that was then and this is now. Nowadays people use RSS
readers to keep tabs on their favorite sites and freshmeat.net readers are
no different. In fact, our newsserver has so little traffic that we have
collectively decided that the cost of maintenance to keep this service up
is not justified by the usage it gets. Therefore I herely officially
announce the retirement of the news.freshmeat.net newsgroups effective July
15th, 2008. Stronger offerings of RSS-based subscriptions will be made
available over the course of this year. Thank you for your continued
support.

[016] - GtkAda contributions 2.2
by Dmitry Kazakov (http://freshmeat.net/users/kazakov/)
Mon, Jun 30th 2008 20:09
Software Development
Software Development :: Libraries
About: The library is a contribution to GtkAda, an Ada bindings to GTK+
toolkit. It deals with the following issues: tasking support; custom models
for tree view widget; custom cell renderers for tree view widget;
multi-columned derived model; an extension derived model (to add columns to
an existing model); an abstract caching model for directory-like data; tree
view and list view widgets for navigational browsing of abstract caching
models; file system navigation widgets with wildcard filtering; resource
styles; capturing the resources of a widget; embeddable images; some
missing sub-programs and bugfixes; a measurement unit selection widget and
dialogs; an improved hue-luminance-saturation color model; simplified image
buttons and buttons customizable by style properties; controlled Ada types
for GTK+ strong and weak references; and a simplified means to create lists
of strings.
Changes: This version is based on GNAT GPL 2008 and GtkAda.2.10.2. In
order to improve security, Gtk.Persistent_Storage_Browser wipes password
strings it creates before their deallocation. Gtk.Tree_Model.Columned_Store
contains Is_Ancestor and Is_Descendant functions and supports a mode
without a reference model. The extension tree model
Gtk.Tree_Model.Extension_Store supports reference model change. The
procedure Set is added to GLib.Object.Weak_References. A bug is fixed in
GLib.Object.Strong_References and Weak_References.

About: htmLawed is a PHP script that makes input text more secure, HTML
standards-compliant, and suitable in general from the viewpoint of a
Web-page administrator, for use in the body of HTML 4 or XHTML 1 or 1.1
documents. It is a customizable HTML/XHTML filter, processor, purifier, and
sanitizer. It can ensure that HTML tags are balanced and properly nested
tags, neutralize code that may be used for cross-site scripting (XSS)
attacks, and limit the allowed HTML elements, tags, attributes, or URL
protocols.
Changes: This release provides a new option to compact HTML by removing
unnecessary white spaces, or to beautify it like HTMLTidy with indentations

by Miloslav Trmac (http://freshmeat.net/users/mitr/)
Mon, Jun 30th 2008 01:55
System :: Systems Administration
About: mlocate is a new locate implementation. The "m" stands for
"merging", because updatedb reuses the existing database to avoid rereading
most of the file system, which makes updatedb faster and does not trash the
system caches as much. The locate(1) utility is intended to be completely
compatible to slocate. It also attempts to be compatible to GNU locate,
when it does not conflict with slocate compatibility.
Changes: A new variable PRUNENAMES, and new updatedb options
--add-prunenames and --prunenames. Fixes for prunepaths and bind mount
pruning in certain cases. The database is locked in updatedb to avoid more
than one updatedb running concurrently. The temporary database file is
removed if updatedb aborts with an assertion failure. Sorting of prunefs if
an entry contains uppercase characters has been fixed. There are new and
updated translations.

[031] - Pantry 24
by massysett (http://freshmeat.net/users/massysett/)
Mon, Jun 30th 2008 20:06
Scientific/Engineering :: Medical Science Apps.
About: Pantry is a command line nutrient analysis program. It will help
you track your food intake and analyze recipes for their nutrient content.
Because it works entirely from the command line, it is very fast to use,
powerful, and flexible.
Changes: This release was rewritten in C++. This allows for greater speed,
much less memory use, a massive reduction in the number of bugs, and
cleaner code because there are no nasty hacks to reduce memory use or
increase speed. The user interface has changed substantially, as now there
are no more XML files: all data is entered from the command line.
Installation uses GNU Autotools (e.g. ./configure && make && make install).

[032] - portreserve 0.0.2
by Tim Waugh (http://freshmeat.net/users/tmw/)
Mon, Jun 30th 2008 15:06
About: portreserve aims to help services with well-known ports that lie in
the bindresvport() range. It prevents portmap (or other programs using
bindresvport()) from occupying a real service's port by occupying it
itself, until the real service tells it to release the port (generally in
its init script).
Changes: A typing mistake in the previous version has been fixed.

[034] - rp-pppoe 3.10
by David F. Skoll (http://freshmeat.net/users/dskoll/)
Mon, Jun 30th 2008 14:30
System :: Networking
About: rp-pppoe is a PPPoE client and server suite for Linux. It is fully
RFC-compliant and supports cookies, relay-IDs, and multiple simultaneous
PPPoE discovery phases. It is cleanly coded and fairly efficient, and
supports kernel-mode PPPoE on Linux 2.4 and 2.6.
Changes: Compilation problems on various platforms were fixed. The
Makefiles now obey DESTDIR to relocate installed files. The kernel-mode
PPPoE plugin is easier to compile, since you do no longer need to specify
the path to pppd.h if it's installed under /usr/include.

[035] - Schoorbs 1.0.3
by xhochy (http://freshmeat.net/users/xhochy/)
Mon, Jun 30th 2008 14:30
Office/Business :: Scheduling
About: Schoorbs is a system to make room and resource bookings through a
Web 2.0 GUI. You can also interact with it through a REST API. It allows
you to book rooms and resources grouped by areas. Activity can be logged
via a simple logging interface. The code is automatically tested by several
unit tests. The interface can easily be styled through the usage of a
template system. Schoorbs produces valid XHTML 1.1 output, has packages for
Debian and Ubuntu, and is well documented online.
Changes: This version comes with a fix for the first security problem that
was ever detected in Schoorbs. Despite the fact that it is an SQL injection
vulnerability, it doesn't give the users who could exploit it any more
rights since the affected code passage may only be called by
administrators. Although this is a security release, an email logging
backend is now included, so that one could be notified by mail if a booking
will be created or edited.

Changes: This release adds classic SPF support. Configuration reload has
been added on signal 1 (SIGHUP). The "NS Relay" algorithm has been renamed
to AutoSPF. The auto-confirmation algorithm has been renamed to AutoSWL
(Auto Sender White List). There is a small bugfix in the AutoSPF and data
caching code. There are new options in the config file, and minor changes
to config defaults. There is a bugfix in the greylisting code. The code has

About: Word War vi is a side-scrolling shoot 'em up '80s style arcade
game. You pilot your "vi"per craft through core memory, rescuing lost .swp
files, avoiding OS defenses, and wiping out those memory hogging emacs
processes. When all the lost .swp files are rescued, head for the socket
which will take you to the next node in the cluster.
Changes: Now, when you shoot down jets or gdbs, the pilots and crew eject
and, by means of jetpack, come after you with lasers blasting. The breather
period between lives was increased from 1 second to 4 seconds. Some minor
Makefile problems were fixed.
