About: Carcode is an experiment in programming education. The idea is to
give beginning programmers carcode, which provides an animated car they can
drive around the screen either using the keyboard or programmatically
through a simple API. By working on a series of problems (such as "park the
car in parking space A"), beginners learn to program in an engaging and
goal-driven environment with which they already familiar.

Communications :: File Sharing
Information Management
Scientific/Engineering
About: CODESH (COllaborative DEvelopment SHell) is an automatic persistent
logbook for sessions of personal command line work. It records what and how
is being done, for private use/reuse and for sharing selected parts with
collaborators. It is an intelligent shell that automatically logs user's
shell sessions. Sessions are uniquely tagged and stored in local or
distributed backend repositories (ASCII flat file or Subversion or CVS
based) and can be extracted and reproduced at any time by the user who
created the session or by collaborators located anywhere in the world.
Changes: The test suite was streamlined to produce shorter and more
focused output, making it easier to scan the results from each test. The
code for the various backends was cleaned up. A problem when extracting
flex sessions (the log-modify-and-replay mechanism of CODESH) from remote
CVS backends was fixed.

Software Development :: Interpreters
Software Development :: Libraries
About: Ctalk provides object oriented programming features, like classes,
methods, operator overloading, and inheritance to otherwise standard C
programs. You can use only a few objects and classes in a program, or you
can write programs entirely in Ctalk. The package provides a translator
from Ctalk source code into C for compilation and a library that provides
run-time support for class objects. The preprocessor, ctpp, is also
available separately, and the package includes sample programs and
documentation.
Changes: This release allows programs to use objects as arguments to
ordinary functions, and adds additional type promotion in several methods.

About: DBAHelper is a collection of scripts to ease the daily maintenance
work of Oracle database administrators. Examples are moving objects
between tablespaces, analyzing schemata, and rebuilding invalid indices.
Also included is a little framework to simplify the use of RMAN (this
framework depends on the use of Oracle 10g with the Recovery Area enabled
and properly sized, so all backups go there).
Changes: There are many little enhancements to the RMAN framework's
create_standby and restore_full commands. Several small fixes have been
applied to the restore_full and restore_ctl commands.

[010] - DBLog Amateur Radio Logging Program 0.13.2
by Pino Zollo (http://freshmeat.net/users/pinoz/)
Fri, Jul 11th 2008 17:48
About: DBLog is a logging program for radio amateurs based on a relational
database. It allows the user to log QSOs and export a range of them in ADIF
format. It can read the radio frequency via CAT interface. It includes a CW
Keyer based on cwdaemon.
Changes: This release is especially for developers of other HAM radio
applications such as programs for digimodes, EME, or Meteorscatter. It now
works also as 'Log server': another program can send commands to DBLog via
TCP on port 3164 to fill fields and to log QSOs. DBLog replies with 'Name'
and 'QTH' if the call has been worked before.

[011] - deco archive file extractor 1.1
by P. Hartlich (http://freshmeat.net/users/phartlich/)
Fri, Jul 11th 2008 07:15
System :: Archiving
About: deco is a generic archive file extractor that has a consistent
command line interface ("deco 1.tar.bz2 2.zip 3.flac 4.rar 5.deb" will just
work) and consistent behavior (it never deletes archives after extraction,
extracts relative to the current working directory, and extracts just
verbosely enough, all unless explicitly requested otherwise). It provides
automatic handling of extractor gotchas by creating an extraction directory
if there is more than one file or directory at the archive top level and by
being able to fix strange permissions. Dozens of archive file extensions
are supported out of the box, and adding support for others requires very
little work.
Changes: The oxt (OpenOffice extension) alias for zip archives is
supported. Unlinking is done correctly when both -u and -e are given.
Undefined cp behavior is avoided during make install. c99 is used instead
of cc to compile and link. The code was made nicer.

[012] - Dnsmasq 2.43
by Simon Kelley (http://freshmeat.net/users/simonkelley/)
Fri, Jul 11th 2008 17:13
Internet :: Name Service (DNS)
About: Dnsmasq is a lightweight, easy to configure DNS forwarder and DHCP
server. It is designed to provide DNS and (optionally) DHCP to a small
network. It can serve the names of local machines which are not in the
global DNS. The DHCP server integrates with the DNS server and allows
machines with DHCP-allocated addresses to appear in the DNS with names
configured either in each host or in a central configuration file. Dnsmasq
supports static and dynamic DHCP leases and BOOTP/TFTP for network booting
of diskless machines.
Changes: This release fixes the DNS spoofing vulnerabilities announced in
CERT VU#800113. It adds source port randomization for communication with
upstream nameservers and replaces the C library PRNG with stronger code. It
makes failure to drop root privileges a hard error (previous versions would
log the error and continue, running as root.) Other changes include an
update to avoid triggering Linux kernel messages about an out-of-date
capabilities ABI, support for NAPTR records, and RFC 5107
server-id-override.

by Albert Chu (http://freshmeat.net/users/chu11/)
Fri, Jul 11th 2008 23:29
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Systems Administration
About: Genders is a static cluster configuration database used for cluster
configuration management. It is used by a variety of tools and scripts for
management of large clusters. The genders database is accessed by every
node in a cluster, either through a networked file system or by replicating
the database on every node of the cluster. The database describes the
layout and configuration of the cluster so that tools and scripts can sense
the variations of cluster nodes. By abstracting this information into a
plain text file, it becomes possible to change the configuration of a
cluster by modifying only one file.
Changes: Host range calculation corner cases have been fixed.

[017] - Google Gadgets for Linux 0.10.0
by suzhe (http://freshmeat.net/users/suzhe/)
Fri, Jul 11th 2008 20:24
Desktop Environment
Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: User Interfaces
About: Google Gadgets for Linux provides a platform for running Google
Gadgets under Linux, catering to the unique needs of Linux users. It's
compatible with the gadgets written for Google Desktop for Windows as well
as the Universal Gadgets on iGoogle. There are two main components to the
application: one is a common gadget library responsible for running and
presenting a gadget, and the other is a host program that allows the user
to choose gadgets and run them on the desktop. Currently it has hosts
written for GTK+ and Qt, with the GTK+ host offering a sidebar similiar to
that of Google Desktop for Windows.
Changes: Memory consumption and performance have been improved by
introducing class based property registration. Several built-in gadgets
have been added, such as Web Clip, Analog Clock, etc. Most issues of
SideBar have been resolved. SideBar now supports auto hide mode. ggl-gtk
now supports hotkey. Compatibility issues with xulrunner 1.9 have been
resolved. Desktop entries for ggl-gtk and ggl-qt have been added. A Debug
Console has been added for both ggl-gtk and ggl-qt. Use the -dc command
option to enable it. qt_script_runtime has been added, though there are
still some bugs. There are many other bugfixes.

[018] - Hasard 0.5
by Haypo (http://freshmeat.net/users/haypo/)
Fri, Jul 11th 2008 07:17
Scientific/Engineering :: Physics
Software Development :: Libraries
About: Hasard is a pseudo-random number generator (PRNG) library. It
includes multiple engines (algorithms): Park-Miller, Mersenne Twister,
Linux device (/dev/urandom or /dev/random), and more. It has a simple but
powerful API. For example, a PRNG seed can be generated using strong
entropy (using a hardware random number generator like /dev/random on
Linux). The library is written in C, and a Python binding is available. The
word "hasard" is the French word for "randomness" or "chance".
Changes: The library is now thread safe: locking callbacks were created.
Random profiles (@fast, @secure, @hardware, and @test) were created.
hasard_engine_int() and hasard_engine_ulong() were rewritten to support
64-bit CPUs; the GMP library is now used. The function hasard_uuid() was
created. Support for FreeBSD and partial support for Windows were added.
The CMake build system is now used.

Education
Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization
About: iDMC is user-friendly software for the simulation and analysis of
non-linear models. It was designed both as a teaching and research tool,
and is very easy to use (a users guide is available). Numerical
calculations are performed on models included in the package, or any model
formulated by the user and easily encoded (a few lines with no compilation
necessary). The Java graphical user interface provides fast generation of
graphical data of good quality, which can be saved as .png files. Hard
computational tasks are delegated to a separate, small C library.
Changes: The legend in Lyap.exp has been fixed. Map plot uses 'NA' instead
of 'divergent'. A bug in the trajectory initialization code has been fixed.
There is miscellaneous internal code cleanup. The silent error message is
now reported when there are 'NaN' values in trajectory rendering.

[024] - MirBSD Korn Shell R35
by mirabile (http://freshmeat.net/users/mirabile/)
Fri, Jul 11th 2008 23:37
System :: Shells
About: The MirBSD Korn Shell (mksh) is an actively developed successor of
pdksh (the Public Domain Korn Shell), aimed at producing a shell good for
interactive use, but with the primary focus on scripting. It is intended to
be portable to most *nix-like operating systems as long as they're not too
obscure. mksh incorporates improvements from OpenBSD and Debian, as well as
bugfixes and enhancements developed for the MirOS, FreeWRT, and MidnightBSD
projects. The emacs command line editing mode is UTF-8 capable, and Byte
Order Marks are ignored in scripts. The shell supports large files, as well
as all pdksh and some csh, AT&T ksh, and GNU bash features, is compatible
with the Bourne shell and POSIX (within limits), has no limit on array
sizes, and incorporates some other useful builtins and features. While
being already fast and small (without losing functionality), flags to make
it even smaller can be given at compile time. An interactive shell reads
"~/.mkshrc" on startup.
Changes: This release fixes quite a few bugs and improves UTF-8 handling.
It adds base-1 numbers as codepoints; the new variables PGRP and USER_ID;
new a builtin realpath; new platforms dietlibc and LLVM; GNU bash
compatible I/O "&>" redirection; the ability to have more than 10 redir
file descriptors; improvements in the build system and regression test
suite; and licence simplification (the advertising clause was rescinded).

Fri, Jul 11th 2008 23:33
Games/Entertainment :: Puzzle Games
About: nPush is a logic game somewhere in between Sokoban and Boulder
Dash. You need to collect all the gold on the level and reach the exit. To
make it hard there are some rocks that stand in your way, and you also have
some dynamite to blast them. The main difference from similar games is that
you can have multiple player-controlled characters on the screen.
Changes: The title screen logo has been changed to be pure 7-bit ASCII
since it created problems on some terminals. 7 new levels have been added.
Levels have been moved to a separate subdirectory to avoid clutter. This
release builds on Mac OS X. An option to configure keyboard controls has

[034] - Plan 9 From User Space 20080711
by Lost Goblin (http://freshmeat.net/users/lostgoblin/)
Fri, Jul 11th 2008 20:30
Software Development
About: Plan 9 From User Space is a port of the bulk of the Plan 9 software
build environment to Unix. While the libraries make an attempt to play nice
with the rest of the system (by using the Unix rules for printf verbs and
Unix system headers, for example), this port tries to reproduce the Plan 9
build environment as faithfully as possible, providing u.h and libc.h, and
blithely redefining tokens such as open, dup, and accept in order to
provide implementations that better mimic the Plan 9 semantics. The result
is a more complicated and less Unix-friendly environment, but Plan 9
programs can typically be compiled with little or no changes.
Changes: Almost everything has been updated since the last freshmeat
announcement, from the new venti backup system to the new upas/fs mailbox
interface. The most recent major feature is a native GUI for OS X.

by Rainer Gerhards (http://freshmeat.net/users/rgerhards/)
Fri, Jul 11th 2008 17:40
System :: Logging
About: Rsyslog is an enhanced multi-threaded syslogd. Among others, it
offers support for on-demand disk buffering, reliable syslog over TCP, SSL,
TLS, and RELP, writing to databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, and many
more), email alerting, fully configurable output formats (including
high-precision timestamps), the ability to filter on any part of the syslog
message, on-the-wire message compression, and the ability to convert text
files to syslog. It is a drop-in replacement for stock syslogd and able to
work with the same configuration file syntax.
Changes: This release is branch based on the previous 3.17.5 beta branch.
It includes all features and bugfixes from the beta, including the ability
to natively send email. A minor bug where RainerScript did not always

[038] - Shell Flags 1.0.1
by Kate Ward (http://freshmeat.net/users/sfsetse/)
Fri, Jul 11th 2008 21:20
System :: Shells
About: Shell Flags (shFlags) is a library written to greatly simplify the
handling of command-line flags in Bourne based Unix shell scripts (such as
those run with bash, dash, ksh, sh, and zsh). Most shell scripts use getopt
for flag processing, but the different versions of getopt on various OSes
make writing portable shell scripts difficult. shflags instead provides an
API that doesn't change across shell and OS versions, so the script writer
can be confident that the script will work.
Changes: This release improves zsh 3.0 support and fixes some other minor
bugs. Several additional unit tests were added to improve testing under
more operating systems.

Changes: The consistency checking method was improved to reduce thumbnail
regeneration time. Info files now contain detailed information about the
sizes of each picture/thumbnail, which allows regenerating only for
selected thumbnails within a folder. Old info files get automatically
converted into a new format. CSS style definition and an example of a CSS
