System :: Boot :: Init
System :: Networking
System :: Systems Administration

About: /etc/net represents a new approach to Linux network configuration
tasks. Inspired by the limitations of traditional network configuration
subsystems, /etc/net provides built-in support for configuration profiles,
interface name management, removable devices, full iproute2 command set,
interface dependencies resolution, QoS, and firewall configuration
frameworks. /etc/net provides support for the following interface types:
ethernet, WiFi (WEP), IPv4/IPv6 tunnels, PSK IPSec tunnels, VLAN, PLIP,
ethernet bonding and bridging, traffic equalizer, Pent@NET, Pent@VALUE,
SkyStar-2, TUN/TAP, OpenVPN TUN/TAP, usbnet, and PPP. Due to its modular
structure, support for new interface types can be added without overall
design changes.

Changes: This maintenance release features a bugfix for ifplugd-enabled
interfaces and some minor improvements in QoS and firewall processing code.
Configuration examples were updated as well.

[002] - Accelerando 0.6
  by Ben Crowell (http://freshmeat.net/users/bcrowell/)
  Sun, Jul 13th 2008 23:30

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio

About: Accelerando is a musical metronome that can speed up, allowing you
to practice your music at progressively faster tempos. For example, you
could set it to play 60 beats per minute for 4 bars, then automatically
speed up by 10 beats per minute, and so on.

Changes: This version changes from using the "play" command (packaged with
sox) to using "aplay" (packaged as part of ALSA, as alsa-utils).

  by Scarfy (http://freshmeat.net/users/Scarfy/)
  Sun, Jul 13th 2008 14:24

Games/Entertainment :: Arcade

About: Blob Wars : Blob and Conquer is a 3rd person action shooter. With
the apparent defeat of Galdov and the reclaiming of the Fire, Time, Space,
and Reality Crystals, the Blobs' battle was only just beginning. Bob had
rescued many Blobs and fought many battles, but now he had an ever bigger
task ahead of him. The Blobs' homeworld is still littered with the alien
forces and Bob once again makes it his task to lead the counter attack. But
even without Galdov the aliens are still extremely well organised.

Changes: Multiple sources of crashes were fixed.

[010] - Dudders 1.02 (Release)
  by Dean Scarff (http://freshmeat.net/users/p00ya/)
  Sun, Jul 13th 2008 23:52

Internet :: Name Service (DNS)

About: Dudders spells "Dynamically Updating DNS Duly Embracing RSA SIG(0)"
(with some poetic license). It points a domain name to a given IP address
using the DNS UPDATE protocol and a SIG(0) signature. It is designed with
embedded systems in mind.

Changes: The crypto plugins should no longer export unresolved symbols.
The authority can now be overidden with the -m and -z options. This
circumvents the search for the master and zone using the local resolver.
The manual page is now in section 8, and has been renamed accordingly. The
private key parsing is more strict, which prevents some potential segfaults
(e.g. when trying to use a dnssec-keygen .key file instead of the .private
file).

  by Emil Brink (http://freshmeat.net/users/emilbrink/)
  Sun, Jul 13th 2008 23:29

Desktop Environment :: File Managers

About: gentoo is a file manager written in C. It uses the GTK+ toolkit,
and the two-pane concept, somewhat inspired by DOpus. gentoo strives to be
very configurable, and also to let you do all configuration from a GUI
within the program itself. Using advanced file typing and styling systems,
gentoo determines how to display files in its listings, and also how to act
on them. The package includes a set of over 120 unique handcrafted icons,
for many different types of files.

Changes: Updated automake and gettext. A Mexican Spanish translation. Bugs
#1983108 and #2005746, which caused Gentoo to fail with a code 11 very
often, have been fixed. There are some minor new features and options.

[016] - LinuxConsole 1.0.2008 CD
  by yledoare (http://freshmeat.net/users/yledoare/)
  Sun, Jul 13th 2008 06:49

Communications
Games/Entertainment
Internet

About: LinuxConsole can be started from CD/DVD, Hard disk, floppy disk,
USB disk, or network card (PXE). The 'console' word doesn't mean that it
is started in 'console' mode, but is meant to symbolize the simplicity of
using it. This distribution is as simple to use as a games console: you can
start applications without installing them. It is a live CD, and all
hardware should be auto-configured at first boot. LinuxConsole is modular:
there is a common base (device detection, GUI) and optional modules for
multimedia, communication, and servers.

Changes: This release has been buildt from a new toolchain based on gcc
4.2.2 and glibc 2.7. The 2.4 kernel is also not available for this release,
but you can continue using 2007 ISOs if you have to install linuxconsole on
very old computers. The kernel is 2.6.25.4, patched with squashfs and aufs.
Since bootsplash is obsolete, usplash replaces it. Mplayer 1.0rc2 has DVD
navigation support built-in. You can use it as a "live CD", install
LinuxConsole 1.0.2008 on an empty hard disk, or next to Windows.

[023] - pksh 0.2.0
  by Rocco Carbone (http://freshmeat.net/users/carby/)
  Sun, Jul 13th 2008 06:43

System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: 'pksh' is a hack of the popular 'tcsh' for packets, bytes hosts,
and protocols counts. It is a shell, a network sniffer, a query language
for network monitoring, and finally a rendering engine to display in a form
readable for humans and network administrators all traffic on LAN segments.
It aims to give on character-based terminals the same level of information
'ntop' already provides via its embedded Web interface. It does not
continuously fill the terminal with packet/byte/protocol information, but
allows the user to perform his daily job at the shell level and take a look
at network only via a set of commands implemented as extensions to native
tcsh built-ins. Output can be filtered/sorted/paged/mailed/etc. using
native Unix commands.

Changes: This release adds support for a lot of new counters for bytes,
packets, and protocols. Data-link and IP decoding/counting were enhanced to
include the most popular protocols. A new built-in extension was added
("protocols") and the "pkfinger" command now shows network usage per host
in terms of {bytes,packets,protocols} distribution.

[031] - SlackRoll v27
  by rg3 (http://freshmeat.net/users/rg3/)
  Sun, Jul 13th 2008 14:50

System :: Software Distribution
System :: Systems Administration

About: SlackRoll is a package or upgrade manager for Slackware Linux. It
is designed to work with official mirrors in systems mainly composed of
official packages with a few unofficial packages. It lets you automatically
upgrade or install packages, and displays which packages have been added or
removed from the Slackware tree.

Changes: This release fixes a problem in the changelog entry ordering with
the "full-changelog" operation, adds the "replace" operation suitable for
package name changes and other similar situations, and makes the program
use a primary mirror to download the GnuPG key and the package signatures.
This prevents an attacker from setting up an evil mirror and try to pass an
old, vulnerable but signed package version as a new version by simply
renaming the old package and signature files.
