  Mon, Jul 14th 2008 09:26

Communications
Communications :: Chat
Communications :: Chat :: Unix Talk

About: 123 Flash Chat Server software is a full-featured chat server with
a Flash client with custom skins, linkable to external databases. 123 Flash
Chat is fast, easy, secure, and supports high loads. It is scalable to
support a business of any size. It's also flexible with moderated chat,
CRRC, avatar chat, and event chat. It includes powerful multilingual and
multimedia capabilities.

Changes: A handwriting chat module was added. Different chat rooms can now
have a unique robot that automatically sends messages, and each message may
use a special style. The whiteboard can be enabled or disabled on a
per-room basis. The chat server may now be restarted from the Admin Panel.
Chat backgrounds, Flash emotions, Flash sound files, and chat advertisement
banners can now be easily changed in the visual Admin Panel. Chatting speed
was increased.

[002] - Automatic Drawing Generation 0.3.0
  by Nicola Fontana (http://freshmeat.net/users/entidi/)

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Viewers
Printing
Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization

About: Automatic Drawing Generation is GObject-based library that provides
a non-interactive Cairo canvas specifically designed for generating
technical drawings.

Changes: This release has reworked styles and implements AdgContext, a
clean and well defined approach to manage rendering customization. All the
geometrical code has been moved into the Cairo Path Manipulation Library
(CPML), an internal library depending only on cairo. The documentation has
been greatly improved.

[003] - Blitz templates for PHP 0.6.1
  by Alexey Rybak (http://freshmeat.net/users/alexeyrybak/)
  Mon, Jul 14th 2008 17:55

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: Blitz templates is a fast PHP template engine written in C and
compiled as a PHP extension. It started as a php_templates replacement, but
developed into much more. It is based on extensible template controllers
(custom view classes in PHP) and weakly-active templates (simple logic in
HTML). Benchmarks show that it is one of the fastest template engines for
PHP, even though it's not trivial and makes Web application closer to a
smart MVC-like architecture model with maximal separation of HTML from your
code. It was designed for big high-load Internet projects with a lot of
complex presentation logic.

Changes: In this release, IF/UNLESS multi-line blocks were added. The
primary goal is to help users with the usual header/footer/empty list
pattern in templates (see CHANGES for a detailed example), but this will
help with "long" conditional HTML parts as well. Some minor bugfixes and
code cleanup were performed.

[004] - cpufrequtils 004
  by Dominik Broodwski (http://freshmeat.net/users/brodo/)
  Mon, Jul 14th 2008 13:58

System :: Hardware

About: The cpufrequtils package consists of a library which offers an
unified access method for userspace tools and programs to the CPU frequency
and voltage scaling (cpufreq) subsystem in the Linux kernel, the
"cpufreq-info" and "cpufreq-set" tools to determine and set cpufreq
settings, and debug tools helpful if frequency scaling doesn't work as
expected.

Changes: The most user-visible change of this release is the addition of
statisitics output for cpufreq-info. The cpufrequtils library "libcpufreq"
was updated accordingly, and it doesn't depend on libsysfs any longer.

[005] - databene benerator 0.5.4
  by Volker Bergmann (http://freshmeat.net/users/vbergmann/)
  Mon, Jul 14th 2008 09:44

Software Development :: Testing

About: benerator is a framework for creating realistic and valid
high-volume test data, used for testing (unit/integration/load) and
showcase setup. Metadata constraints are imported from systems and/or
configuration files. Data can imported from and exported to files and
systems, anonymized, or generated from scratch. Domain packages provide
reusable generators for creating domain-specific data such as names and
addresses, internationalizable in language and region. benerator is
strongly customizable with plugins and configuration options.

Changes: All known bugs were fixed, and convenience was improved with the
new <reference> descriptor, configurable CSV separators, improved
distribution support, and a new "finance" domain with generators and
validators for bank account numbers with IBANs. The descriptor syntax and
semantics have been clarified and unified (see
http://databene.org/databene-benerator/file_format.html). Some more XML
Schema features are supported, but there is still work to do.

Database
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search

About: DBSight is a J2EE search platform for instant scalable full-text
search on any relational database, for both beginners and experts. It
features a built-in database crawler following user-defined SQL,
incremental indexing, user-controllable result ranking, the ability to
return results with highlights (like Google), and categorized result counts
(like Amazon). It can easily integrate with other languages with
XML/JSON/HTML. There is a UI for all operations, so no Java coding is
necessary. Deleted or updated records in database can be synchronized also.

Changes: Javadoc for rendering the search result was added. The speed of
data retrieval was increased by batching de-duplication checking. A file
deletion error on Windows was fixed. Logging was added for direct Lucene
queries. Search usage logging based on IP for servers behind proxies was
improved.

Games/Entertainment :: Role-Playing

About: Dungeon Crawl is a fun game in the grand tradition of Rogue, Hack,
and Moria. Your objective is to travel deep into a subterranean cave
complex and retrieve the Orb of Zot, which is guarded by many horrible and
hideous creatures.

Changes: Many interface improvements were made. Tiles were greatly
improved. All sensible species/class combinations are allowed. The vampire
species was added. The good gods were overhauled. The monsters were made
smarter.

About: envstore allows you to save environment variables into a seperate
store, list them, and reload them into the shell again.

Changes: This release adds a better usage statement and a nicer way to set
variables directly, instead of setting and exporting them from the shell
first. It also adds some unit tests.

[009] - Flexible Isometric Fallout-like Engine 2008.1
  by mvBarracuda (http://freshmeat.net/users/mvbarracuda/)
  Mon, Jul 14th 2008 03:58

Games/Entertainment :: Role-Playing
Games/Entertainment :: Turn Based Strategy

About: Flexible Isometric Fallout-like Engine (FIFE) is a cross-platform
2D game creation framework. Games can be created with a combination of
engine, editor tools, game specific scripts, and game content (e.g. maps,
graphics, and sounds). The framework is not tied to any type of game (e.g.
RTS, RPG), but instead provides a flexible platform for all of them. It
supports different isometric views and a pure top-down view. Instead of
full 3D flexibility, the engine focuses mainly on using high quality 2D
graphics. This puts fewer demands on target platforms and also simplifies
the framework and game development.

Changes: The license has been switched from the GPL 2.0 to the LGPL 2.1 or
newer. Map format and resource loading (datasets branch) have been
improved. There is a vastly improved editor tool and batch object loading.
There is a new (work in progress) Rio de hola demo: new maps, graphics, and
sounds. Eye candy: stepless zoom (OpenGL mode only) and instance coloring
and outlining.

Multimedia :: Graphics :: 3D Modeling
Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics

About: Gmsh is an automatic 3D finite element grid generator with built-in
CAD and post-processing facilities. Its design goal is to provide a simple
meshing tool for academic problems with parametric input and advanced
visualization capabilities. It is built around four modules: geometry,
mesh, solver, and post-processing. The specification of any input to these
modules is done either interactively using the graphical user interface
(based on FLTK and OpenGL) or in ASCII text files using Gmsh's own
scripting language.

Changes: This release improves the clipping interface and fixes various
bugs.

[015] - GNU libextractor 0.5.20c
  by Christian Grothoff (http://freshmeat.net/users/grothoff/)
  Mon, Jul 14th 2008 03:56

Communications :: File Sharing
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search
Software Development :: Libraries

About: libextractor is a library used to extract meta-data from files of
arbitrary type. It is designed to use helper-libraries to perform the
actual extraction, and to be trivially extendable by linking against
external extractors for additional file types. The goal is to provide
developers of file-sharing networks, file managers, and WWW-indexing bots
with a universal library to obtain meta-data about files. It includes a
shell-command and bindings for Java (JNI) and Python.

Changes: This release fixes locale paths (for translations). It also
ensures that plugin loading and unloading are thread-safe. Some linkage
errors on OpenBSD were resolved. An experimental thumbnail extractor based
on ffmpeg was added (but is not enabled by default due to security
concerns).

Security :: Cryptography
Software Development :: Libraries

About: The Legion of the Bouncy Castle Java Cryptography API provides a
lightweight cryptography API in Java, a provider for the JCE and JCA, a
clean-room implementation of the JCE 1.2.1, generators for Version 1 and
Version 3 X.509 certificates, generators for Version 2 X.509 attribute
certificates, PKCS12 support, and APIs for dealing with S/MIME, CMS, OCSP,
TSP, OpenPGP, and TLS. Versions are provided for the J2ME, and JDK 1.0-1.6.

Changes: This release adds GCM mode and a DES-EDE only PKCS12 file type.
The TSP package now supports validation of responses with
v2signingCertificate entries. X509Name now handles escaped "+" symbols
correctly, and some minor bugs have been fixed affecting SMIME, EAX mode,
and the OpenPGP APIs. In addition, a regression from 1.38 to 1.39 with the
populating of PKIXCertPathValidatorResult.getPublicKey() has been dealt
with. At the request of a number of users, this release also splits the
provider jars so that the default jar no longer contains the IDEA
encryption algorithm.

[027] - ns4 4.1.2
  by Chris Mason (http://freshmeat.net/users/chrimaso/)
  Mon, Jul 14th 2008 17:55

Utilities

About: ns4 is a configuration management tool which allows the automated
backup of just about anything, but it was designed for routers and
switches. If you are able to log into it through a CLI, you can back it up.
Commands are defined within a configuration file, and when they are
executed, the output is sent to a series of FTP servers for archiving. As
well as archiving configurations, it allows scripts to be run on nodes;
this allows configurations to be applied en masse and allows conditional
logic so different bits of scripts are run on different nodes.

Changes: This release adds support for proxy load balancing and includes
more informative messages about unmatched last lines. It fixes a regression
bug where MATCH_X dynamic variables failed to match.

[033] - pkgmake 0.1.8
  by Izzy (http://freshmeat.net/users/izzysoft/)
  Mon, Jul 14th 2008 13:41

Software Development
Software Development :: Build Tools

About: pkgmake automates some steps when making software releases. It
creates a copy of the development tree, optionally cleans it up a bit (i.e.
removes CVS/* and .svn/*), tars it, places the tarball in the SOURCES/
directory, creates the corresponding .spec file from a provided template
(and the data specified in the configuration/on the command line), and runs
rpmbuild and/or debbuild as well as spec2arch. As a result, you will have
packages for Debian and RPM based distributions as well as the PKGBUILD
file for ArchLinux. Using relman as the recommended frontend to pkgmake,
new software releases are as easy as calling relman with two parameters:
the project name plus the release version - and all packages are made and
distributed.

Changes: An additional script has been added (and integrated with the main
process) to also create PKGBUILD files as used by "pacman", the package
manager of ArchLinux. So pkgmake now supports three different packaging
systems.

  Mon, Jul 14th 2008 17:48

System :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration

About: The sysstat package contains the sar, sadf, iostat, mpstat, and
pidstat commands for Linux. The sar command collects and reports system
activity information. The statistics reported by sar concern I/O transfer
rates, paging activity, process-related activites, interrupts, network
activity, memory and swap space utilization, CPU utilization, kernel
activities, and TTY statistics, among others. The sadf command may be used
to display data collected by sar in various formats. The iostat command
reports CPU statistics and I/O statistics for tty devices and disks. The
pidstat command reports statistics for Linux processes. The mpstat command
reports global and per-processor statistics.

Changes: Virtual machine time accounting has been added to "sar -u ALL"
and mpstat (%guest). pidstat has also been updated to be able to display
time spent by a task in a virtual machine. The option -S has been added to
sar, which tells sar to display swap space utilization. "%swpcad" has been
added to sar -S (percentage of cached swap memory in relation to the amount
of used swap space). "kbcommit" and "%commit" have been added to sar -r
(amount and percentage of memory needed for current workload). iostat now

[048] - System for Internet-Level Knowledge 1.1.0
  by Michael Welsh Duggan (http://freshmeat.net/users/md5i/)
  Mon, Jul 14th 2008 13:43

Information Management
Internet :: Log Analysis
Security

About: SiLK (System for Internet-Level Knowledge) consists of two sets of
tools: a packing system and an analysis suite. The packing system receives
Netflow V5 PDUs or IPFIX and converts them into a more space efficient
format, recording the packed records into service-specific binary flat
files. The analysis suite consists of tools that can read these flat files
and then perform various query operations, ranging from per-record
filtering to statistical analysis of groups of records. The analysis tools
interoperate using pipes, allowing a user to develop a relatively
sophisticated query from a simple beginning.

Changes: It is now possible to use the PySiLK (SiLK in Python) capability
in rwcut, rwuniq, and rwsort to create arbitrary fields for printing,
counting, and sorting. rwuniq can count more bins than will fit in memory.
When its hash table fills, rwuniq uses temporary files to store the data
and merges these files once all input has been read. rwtotal has minimum
and maximum thresholds. rwflowpack and the sensor.conf syntax have been
changed to allow the administrator to explicitly set the directionality of
collected flows (for use on a unidirectional tap).

Communications :: Email

About: Topal is yet another program that links GnuPG and Pine/Alpine. It
offers facilities to encrypt, decrypt, sign, and verify messages. Multiple
PGP blocks included in the text of a message are processed. Decryption and
verification output can be cached to reduce the number of times the
passphrase is entered. RFC2015/3156 multipart messages can be sent and
received with help from some scripts, procmail, and a patch to Pine/Alpine.
There is a high level of configurability.

Changes: A remote sending mode was added. MIME viewing was improved, so it
can use run-mailcap, metamail, or save the email for viewing with Alpine. A
modified version of MIME-tool (included in the source distribution) is now
used. UI improvements were made. Various minor bugfixes and enhancements
were made.

System :: Networking

About: tunctl is a small tool for controlling Linux TUN/TAP devices.
TUN/TAP devices are virtual network devices where software emulates the
wire. With the help of tunctl, such virtual devices can be pre-created and
assigned to non-root users for later use, e.g. in virtualization or
emulation setups. Many other applications of TUN/TAP devices exist.

Printing
System :: Hardware

About: TurboPrint is a comfortable high-quality printer driver system for
Linux. It is designed to produce maximum quality photo printouts as well as
high-speed text documents. It provides printer drivers for almost every
inkjet printer, e.g. Canon PIXMA, Epson Stylus Color and Photo, and HP
DeskJet, DesignJet, and PhotoSmart. All printer features are supported.
TurboPrint has a real color management system. High quality color profiles
ensure optimum color reproduction on all print media. A comfortable GUI
configuration menu and a printer toolbox (head cleaning, alignment, ink
quantity) are included. TurboPrint can be easily integrated into the CUPS
printing system.

Changes: Many new features were added, such as color management with ICC
profiles, printer status monitoring with a panel applet, manual duplex
printing, print preview, ink saving mode, and color profiling service. This
version has a completely new GTK2 user interface with a central
configuration program that can be used without root privileges. A print
plugin for GIMP makes printing via TurboPrint comfortable. A free 30-day
trial version with full functionality is available.

[056] - Votorola 0.1.10
  by Michael Allan (http://freshmeat.net/users/mcallan/)
  Mon, Jul 14th 2008 08:22

About: Votorola is software for hosting free and open elections. It
provides the freedom to nominate one's own candidate, to retain control of
one's own vote, and to express one's choice in year round, continuous
elections. The elections are independently hosted by volunteers in your own
community, the votes are openly posted for verification, and the voter
lists are backed by a trust network that is rooted in local neighborhoods.
You are invited to join with your neighbors in advancing your candidates
for public office, your policies for executive action, and your legislative
bills for statutory law. All it takes to declare independence is to vote
free.

Changes: Doubt signaling was implemented as an adjunct to the trust
network, serving to indicate suspicious voter registrations. Controls and
views of the overall trust network were added to the Web interface. A cache
was added to relieve the load on remote geocoding services. Constraints on
the length of user input were tightened, closing several security holes. A
theory outline was drafted, predicting the rough fit of Votorola in
society.
