Office/Business

About: The Big Faceless PDF Library is a Java class library for creating
PDF documents. The Extended Edition offers the ability to create and edit
AcroForms, PDF's answer to the HTML form. Like HTML forms, PDF forms can
contain text boxes, radio buttons, and can call JavaScript functions. The
Extended Edition also includes a PDF reader for importing and editing,
along with FDF support, verification for digital signatures and text
extraction. Both variations offer full Unicode support, encryption,
embedded TrueType and Type1 fonts, barcodes, hyperlinks, and spot and
calibrated color.

Changes: The ability to write Linearized (also known as "Web optimized")
PDFs was added. The PageExtractor class was rewritten completely; it is now
faster, better, and works with rotated documents. A problem which caused
increased memory usage when using a PDFReader in a single thread was fixed.
The difference can be significant, so anyone in this situation is
encouraged to upgrade. Significant improvements were made to the behavior
and appearance of the Viewer, giving more reliable results across the
board.

[005] - Botan 1.7.8 (Development)
  by Jack Lloyd (http://freshmeat.net/users/randombit/)
  Wed, Jul 16th 2008 14:04

Security :: Cryptography
Software Development :: Libraries

About: Botan is a C++ library of cryptographic algorithms. It includes a
wide selection of cryptographic algorithms (including AES, DES, SHA-1, RSA,
and DSA, among many others). It also support X.509 certificates and several
common certificate-related formats and protocols. It has a high level
interface, is easily portable to most systems and compilers, and includes a
substantial tutorial and API reference.

Changes: The Shanks-Tonelli algorithm, used to find square roots modulo a
prime, was added. An implementation of the Noekeon block cipher was added.
The function used to generate random primes can now generate primes of any
length, instead of being limited to those larger than 48 bits. Among
various other internal cleanups, the Config class and the global function
deref_alias were removed.

  by David Basden (http://freshmeat.net/users/shig/)
  Wed, Jul 16th 2008 17:21

System :: Operating System Kernels

About: DeLiRiuM is a 32-bit nanokernel hybrid operating system. One of its
aims is developing and testing unconventional interfaces between OS and
userspace rather than providing yet another ubiquitous POSIX.1-like API.
The goal is to do this in a not only in a programmer friendly way, but also
without sacrificing modern OS features or performance. Development
currently targets IA-32 (x86), the Xen hypervisor, and Unix userspace. The
DeLiRiuM kernel is primarily written in ANSI C and x86 assembler (gas).

Changes: Early stages of a port of kernel to run as a domU under xen. A
huge amount of concurrency problems/race conditions have been fixed. IPC
has been greatly improved, and is integrated more closely with the
short-term scheduler. Much more independent and resilient user-space. A
user-space SLIP driver. Many changes to support loading of
position-independent executables. Many other minor bugfixes and features.

  Wed, Jul 16th 2008 14:00

Database
Information Management
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: The Envers project makes it simple to version (JPA) entities. The
only thing required is annotating them with @Versioned. Storing historical
data (versions) is completely transparent to the developer, and the
entities may be handled as always. Not only basic properties of an entity
can be versioned, but also relations, making it possible to view parts of
the database as they were at a given revision. Moreover, Envers provides a
straightforward interface for retrieving historical data, a criteria-like
query interface, and the possibility to store additional information
alongside each revision.

Changes: This is the first general availability release, stabilizing the
preview and beta versions. Minor bugs were fixed. Versions of entities are
generated when collections change. For more information on what this means,
see http://www.warski.org/blog/?p=15.

[012] - fakechroot 2.7
  by Piotr Roszatycki (http://freshmeat.net/users/d3xter/)
  Wed, Jul 16th 2008 13:45

System :: Systems Administration

About: fakechroot provides a fake chroot environment to programs. A fake
chroot allows you to run programs which require root privileges on an
unprivileged user account. For example, you can create a Debian bootstrap
or a development environment and build packages inside a chroot'ed system
using a standard non-root user account. You can then use the apt-get
command to install other packages without root privileges.

Changes: Stability and compatibility were improved for the latest libc.
Fixes were made for latest version of coreutils. PF_UNIX sockets are
supported. New functions were added: __fxstatat(2), __fxstatat64(2),
fchmodat(2), fchownat(2), __openat(2), __openat64(2), unlinkat(2),
mkdirat(2), renameat(2), eaccess(3), bind(2), connect(2), getpeername(2),
and getsockname(2). The chroot(2) function was fixed to not change the
current working directory and to handle relative path. The execve(2)
function was fixed to not expand argv0 and handle "#!" correctly.

About: gwhois is a generic whois client (and server) which strives to
know the right server to query for each and every top level domain and IP
address. You can ask gwhois about a domain or IP address, and it will
automatically forward your query to the appropriate server. It even
queries whois servers that can only be reached by a Web form, and outputs
the results as text. It can be used as a client or as a relaying server,
so you can use your normal whois client to ask gwhois.

System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: Kernel Mode Linux is a technology which enables the execution of
user programs in a kernel mode. In Kernel Mode Linux, user programs can
access kernel address space directly. Unlike kernel modules, user programs
are executed as ordinary processes (except for their privilege level), so

[027] - mod_myuserdir 0.99.4 (DBD)
  by igoriii (http://freshmeat.net/users/igoriii/)
  Wed, Jul 16th 2008 08:38

About: mod_myuserdir is an Apache module for dynamically configured mass
user dirs that stores all configuration in a MySQL database. It removes the
need to have every user in /etc/passwd and does not require Apache to be
restarted after configuration changes. It is also capable of changing PHP4
settings such as safe_mode and register_globals dynamically for every user.
By default, open_basedir is set to the home directory and safe_mode is on
to prevent users from accessing files belonging to other users.

Changes: Apache 2.2+ is now supported. To access database and SQL result
caching, APR's DBD API (mod_dbd) is used, so it is possible to use not only
MySQL, but any databse that is supported by DBD.

Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes

About: PHP MIME Mail decoder class is a PHP class to parse and decode MIME
email messages. It supports decoding single RFC 2822 MIME messages or
archives that aggregate multiple messages in the mbox format. It can decode
messages read from files or data strings. The bodies of multipart messages
can be decoded into distinct sub-messages. Optionally, the message body
data can be saved to separate files, so the class can handle messages
larger than the available memory. The parser can tolerate some syntax
errors in malformed messages that are not compliant with RFC 2822.

Trisul. What sets Trisul apart from other monitoring tools is its
drill-down capabilities for analyzing past events (e.g. "Show me the top

be used as a Web-based network security monitoring platform. Web Trisul
features live SVG charts that allow you to select a time interval and
invoke drill-down analysis using the raw traffic data as the source. You
can also write tools that communicate with Trisul directly via a secure TLS

[050] - Xapian and Omega 1.0.7

Information Management
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search
Software Development :: Libraries

About: Xapian is a search engine library, scalable to collections
containing hundreds of millions of documents. It's written in C++ with
bindings for Perl, Python, PHP, Java, Tcl, C#, and Ruby. It is a highly
adaptable toolkit that allows developers to easily add advanced indexing
and search facilities to their own applications. It supports the
Probabilistic Information Retrieval model and also a rich set of boolean
query operators. Omega is a Web search application built upon the Xapian
library. It can index a Web server's document tree (including HTML, PDF,
OpenOffice, MS Word/Excel/Powerpoint/Works, WordPerfect, RTF, PS, etc.), or
data exported from arbitrary sources (e.g. SQL databases).

Changes: When there are gaps in the docids, OP_VALUE_* operators are now
more efficient and don't ever return non-existent docids. The bounds on,
and the estimate of, the number of matches are now better in various cases.
Some O(N*N) behavior in the QueryParser has been fixed. Matches with
multiple databases, at least one of which is remote, and when the top hit
is from a remote database are faster. Omega's $highlight color combinations
are now all readable. Omindex now understands BOMs in text files, and the
built-in converter used when libiconv isn't available now understands
UCS-2/UTF-16.
