[004] - Arno's IPTABLES Firewall Script 1.9.0-rc1
  by Arno (http://freshmeat.net/users/arnova/)
  Tue, Jul 29th 2008 14:40

System :: Networking
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: Arno's IPTABLES Firewall Script is a secure stateful firewall for
both single and multi-homed machines. It supports NAT and SNAT, port
forwarding, ADSL ethernet modems with both static and dynamically assigned
IPs, MAC address filtering, stealth port scan detection, DMZ support,
protection against SYN/ICMP flooding, experimental IPv6 support,
multi-interface/aliased-IP support, and extensive user definable logging
with rate limiting to prevent log flooding. It has plugin support to add
extra features (like SSH Brute Force protection and (Racoon) IPSEC
support). It is easy to configure and highly customizable. A filter script
that makes your firewall log more readable is also included.

Changes: A bug in the NAT forwarding code that prevented interfaces from
working was fixed. The ipsec-vpn plugin was updated (and renamed from
"racoon-ipsec-vpn"). Updates were made to the README file. Miscellaneous
changes were made.

  by Dominique Dumont (http://freshmeat.net/users/ddumont/)
  Tue, Jul 29th 2008 17:45

Software Development
System :: Systems Administration

About: Config::Model::Itself provides a configuration model for
Config::Model. In other words, the structure of a model specification is
described in Config::Model::Itself so you can use the same user interface
to edit configuration data (for instance Xorg configuration data from
xorg.conf) and Xorg model (if you need to add new parameters in Xorg
model). You can also create your own configuration model to get a
configuration tool for your own application.

Changes: The "meta-model" has been changed for the autoread and autowrite
feature (needed by Config::Model 0.624). The user's configuration model
will be automatically upgraded from the old format to the new one. The
ability to specify Red Hat's Augeas as a permanent storage backend has been
added. The 'migrate_from' parameter has been added to Class so that your
own configuration model will be able to smoothly upgrade your user's
configuration data (See the upgrade documentation in Config::Model::Value).

[011] - deco archive file extractor 1.3
  by P. Hartlich (http://freshmeat.net/users/phartlich/)
  Tue, Jul 29th 2008 17:52

System :: Archiving

About: deco is a generic archive file extractor that has a consistent
command line interface ("deco 1.tar.bz2 2.zip 3.flac 4.rar 5.deb" will just
work) and consistent behavior (it never deletes archives after extraction,
extracts relative to the current working directory, and extracts just
verbosely enough, all unless explicitly requested otherwise). It provides
automatic handling of extractor gotchas by creating an extraction directory
if there is more than one file or directory at the archive top level and by
being able to fix strange permissions. Dozens of archive file extensions
are supported out of the box, and adding support for others requires very
little work.

Changes: A slash is now appended when printing directory names even if
stdout isn't a terminal, making reuse of deco's output in scripts more
convenient. The EXTRACTORS variable in config.mk has been formatted to be
easier to read and modify. Error messages have become more consistent. Over
20 lines of code were removed.

  by Juraj Bednar (http://freshmeat.net/users/jooray/)
  Tue, Jul 29th 2008 14:47

About: DSSH was written as a direct replacement for the OpenSSH client. It
adds SSH over SSH tunneling capabilities (for example, to log in to a
network hidden by a firewall), scripting support (using Groovy), an
advanced agent (which allows storing of passwords) and "su -" interactive
logging for machines that have disabled direct root login. All of this was
done to enable automated scripting and logging to many machines based on a
few simple rules. It uses the Ganymed SSH library (slightly patched).

  Tue, Jul 29th 2008 00:02

Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)
Communications :: Email :: Filters

About: Heirloom mailx (formerly known as "nail") is derived from Berkeley
Mail and provides the functionality of the System V and POSIX mailx
commands. Additional features include support for MIME, IMAP (including
caching and disconnected use), POP3, SMTP, S/MIME, international character
sets, maildir folders, message threading, powerful search methods, scoring,
and a Bayesian junk mail filter. Mailx can be used as a mail batch language
in nearly the same way as it is used interactively. It can thus act as a
mailbox filter, can fetch mail from remote accounts, and can send files as
attachments.

Changes: This release adds an option to discard empty messages. It adds
support for SMTP AUTH PLAIN. Messages with illegal byte sequences in
non-interactive mode are not rejected anymore but sent as
"application/octet-stream" instead. Attachments with such sequences are
always sent in this way. Automatic outgoing character set selection now
works for each part of a multi-part message separately.

Internet
System :: Diagnostics
System :: Logging

About: ICPLD (Internet Connection Performance Logging Daemon) is a
connection monitor that sends ICMP requests to IP addresses of your choice
and monitors if your machine has a working network connection. It logs
failed attempts to reach the hosts, and will stamp a log as soon as a reply
is received. It keeps track of when and for how long the connection was
unavailable and records both total down time and each occasion of
interrupted connection. It supports IPv6 and can execute a command whenever
a connection goes up or down, which is useful for alerting users.

Changes: This is simply a maintenance release which replaces a recently
deprecated struct. A noticeable change is that icpld now compiles with IPv6
support by default.

[028] - Postfix 2.5.3 (2.5.x (Stable))
  by Patrick Lenz (http://freshmeat.net/users/scoop/)
  Tue, Jul 29th 2008 00:05

Communications :: Email :: Mail Transport Agents

About: Postfix is an attempt to provide an alternative to the widely-used
Sendmail program. Postfix attempts to be fast, easy to administer, and
hopefully secure, while at the same time being sendmail compatible enough
to not upset your users.

Changes: CN comment strings are now null-terminated after sanitization.
"Bad address pattern" errors with non-address patterns in
namadr_list_match() calls are avoided. A "cleanup -v" panic has been fixed
that occurred because the new "SMTP reply" request flag did not have a
printable name. Using "Before-queue content filter", RFC3848 information
was not added to the headers. A poorly-implemented integer overflow check
for TCP MSS calculation had the unexpected effect that people broke Postfix
on LP64 systems. Delivery is deferred when a mailbox file is not owned by
the recipient.

[031] - PyPEL 0.1
  by Josef Spillner (http://freshmeat.net/users/josef80/)
  Tue, Jul 29th 2008 14:41

About: PyPEL is an experimental prototype for a BPEL 1.1/2.0 execution
engine written in Python. Compared to conventional Java-based engines, it
aims at exploring the integration on the operating system level to bridge
the gap between shell programming and service-oriented environments.

Changes: Some very simple processes can be parsed and transformed into
Python code. BPEL 2.0 processes don't need deployment descriptors when they
include links to the associated WSDL files.

to take care of password aging. A "double slash" path bug in
scms_footer.php has been fixed. user_logins.php and user_sessions.php error

Desktop Environment :: Gnome

Security :: Cryptography

About: Tin Hat is a Linux distribution derived from hardened Gentoo. It
aims to provide a very secure, stable, and fast desktop environment that
lives purely in RAM. Tin Hat boots from CD, or optionally USB pen drive,
but it is not a LiveCD in that it does not mount any file system from the
boot device. Rather, Tin Hat employs a massive squashfs image which expands
into tmpfs upon booting. This makes for long boot times, but remarkable
speeds during human-computer interaction.
