System :: Archiving :: Backup
Utilities

About: Back In Time is a simple backup system for the GNOME desktop
inspired by the "flyback project" and "TimeVault". The backup is done by
taking snapshots of a specified set of directories. All you have to do is
configure: where to save snapshot, what directories to backup, and when a
backup should be done (manually, every hour, every day, every week, or
every month). It acts as a "user mode" backup system. This means that you
can backup and restore only folders to which you have write access.

Changes: This release add size and date columns in the files list, and
changes some texts.

  Fri, Oct 10th 2008 09:29

Internet
Printing
Software Development :: Libraries

About: CUPS provides a portable printing layer for Unix(r)-based operating
systems. It has been developed to promote a standard printing solution for
all Unix vendors and users. CUPS provides the System V and Berkeley command
line interfaces, and uses the Internet Printing Protocol ("IPP") as the
basis for managing print jobs and queues. The Line Printer Daemon (LPD)
Server Message Block (SMB), and AppSocket (a.k.a. JetDirect) protocols are
also supported with reduced functionality. CUPS adds network printer
browsing and PostScript Printer Description ("PPD") based printing options
to support real world printing under UNIX. It includes an image file RIP
that supports printing of image files to non-PostScript printers. A
customized version of GNU Ghostscript 7.05 for CUPS called ESP Ghostscript
is available separately to support printing of PostScript files within the
CUPS driver framework. Sample drivers for Dymo, EPSON, HP, and OKIDATA
printers are included that use these filters.

Changes: Three integer overflow bugs, an incompatibility with Firefox 3,
several printing bugs, and several scheduler bugs were fixed.

[041] - SHOGUN 0.6.5
  by Soeren Sonnenburg (http://freshmeat.net/users/sonnenburg/)
  Fri, Oct 10th 2008 20:35

Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence
Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics

About: SHOGUN is a machine learning toolbox whose focus is on large scale
kernel methods and especially on Support Vector Machines (SVM). It provides
a generic SVM object interfacing to several different SVM implementations,
all making use of the same underlying, efficient kernel implementations.
Apart from SVMs and regression, SHOGUN also features a number of linear
methods like Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), Linear Programming Machine
(LPM), (Kernel) Perceptrons, and algorithms to train hidden Markov models.
SHOGUN can be used from within C++, Matlab, R, Octave, and Python.

Changes: This release contains several cleanups and bugfixes. It
implements a general kernel normalizer that can be attached to kernels via
set_normalizer() in the modular and set_kernel_normalization in the static
interfaces. This fixes a long standing bug in the
WeightedDegreePositionStringKernel normalization, but also breaks
compatibility for a few kernels. This release integrates the Oligo
string-kernel, and adds distances BrayCurtis, ChiSquare, Cosine, and
Tanimoto. It supports Intel MKL on 32-bit architectures. It fixes
compilation when Atlas/Lapack is not available.

  by Marco Caminati (http://freshmeat.net/users/caminati/)
  Fri, Oct 10th 2008 18:02

System :: Archiving :: Mirroring

About: TRIXER creates catalogs of transparent file indexes. A transparent
file index is an exact mirror of a directory, except that each of its file
is void, thus "taking no space", while apparently having the same size of
its indexed counterpart so as to describe it fully. This is accomplished by
combining sparse files support with fusecompress on-the-fly compression
technology. This is useful for many purposes, e.g. creating a catalog of
your CD/DVD-ROM library to browse its contents without having to
physically access it. The advantage of this software is that a TRIXER
catalog is a plain mountable ext2 filesystem, allowing huge
interoperability.
