  Mon, Nov 24th 2008 07:06

Education
Software Development :: Documentation
System :: Systems Administration

About: The Advanced Bash Scripting Guide is both a reference and a
tutorial on shell scripting. This comprehensive book (the equivalent of
900+ print pages) covers almost every aspect of shell scripting. It
contains 350 profusely commented illustrative examples, a number of tables,
and a cross-linked index/glossary. Not just a shell scripting tutorial,
this book also provides an introduction to basic programming techniques,
such as sorting and recursion. It is well suited for either individual
study or classroom use. It covers Bash, up to and including version 3.25.

Changes: Many bugs were fixed. Additionally, there is a great deal of new
material. Editing was done for increased consistency. Two new example
scripts were added.

About: Aigaion is a Web-based shared bibliography manager built on
PHP/MySQL. It is based on the BibTeX format, but has support for other
formats as well. Some of its key features are extensive support for
organizing a bibliography in a topic structure, personal and public
annotations on each publication, multi-user support, easy import/export,
and an intuitive user interface.

Changes: This release can export publications via email. It has major
improvements in the BibTeX import facilities, new handling of BibTeX
special characters allowing many new characters and making it very simple
to add new characters in the future, an improved and more stable login
module, and advanced search capabilities.

[005] - Botan 1.7.23 (Development)
  by Jack Lloyd (http://freshmeat.net/users/randombit/)
  Mon, Nov 24th 2008 00:40

Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
Security :: Cryptography
Software Development :: Libraries

About: Botan is a C++ library of cryptographic algorithms, including AES,
DES, SHA-1, RSA, DSA, Diffie-Hellman, and many others. It also supports
X.509 certificates and CRLs, and PKCS #10 certificate requests, and has a
high level filter/pipe message processing system. The library is easily
portable to most systems and compilers, and includes a substantial tutorial
and API reference.

Changes: This release optimizes most hash function implementations,
particularly MD4 and Tiger, both of which are over 10% faster on x86-64. It
reduces the time needed for entropy polling by using better caching and
buffering techniques. Using C++ TR1 (enabling ECDSA support) is on by
default with GNU C++ and Intel C++. This is the second release candidate
for 1.8.0.

Multimedia :: Graphics
Software Development :: Interpreters

About: Box is a programming language that puts special emphasis on
graphics. It is intended to be for vector graphics what LaTeX is for
writing scientific documents.

Changes: Boxer, a graphical user interface for Box, was released to edit
Box sources while immediately seeing their graphical output. The user can
change the position and shape of objects interactively by using the mouse
to add and move reference points, which are used as parameters for the Box
source. The GUI makes Box a powerful tool which can be used effectively to
create complex figures for reports, papers, and presentations.

Multimedia :: Video :: Conversion

About: ccextractor is a fast closed caption extractor for MPEG files. It
can generate .srt/.smi (subtitles) files directly from your TV recordings
(both analog and digital) or DVDs, Tivo, etc.

Changes: This release adds support for live streaming (it can now process
files that are being recorded at the same time). It adds a new DVR-MS loop
so that it no longer uses the generic MPEG code for DVR-MS. DVR-MS should
(or will eventually, at least) be as reliable as TS.

[009] - Curie 4
  by jyujin (http://freshmeat.net/users/jyujin/)
  Mon, Nov 24th 2008 03:11

Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Operating System

About: Curie is a very minimalistic, tiny C library. It supports basic
I/O, basic networking, S-expression based I/O, signal handling, process
handling, and I/O multiplexing. If the target architecture is explicitly
supported, statically linked binaries may be as small as 4-20 kilobytes; if
not, then it only relies on the host's C library. The library explicitly
does not provide a POSIX interface so that it may be used in conjunction
with a regular host libc (or without one).

Changes: This release includes icemake, as well as a hefty increase in
documentation. Icemake is somewhat experimental, so things could be a bit
odd.

  Mon, Nov 24th 2008 03:09

Database
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search

About: DBSight is a J2EE search platform for instant scalable full-text
search on any relational database, for both beginners and experts. It
features a built-in database crawler following user-defined SQL,
incremental indexing, user-controllable result ranking, the ability to
return results with highlights (like Google), and categorized result counts
(like Amazon). It can easily integrate with other languages with
XML/JSON/HTML. There is a UI for all operations, so no Java coding is
necessary. Deleted or updated records in database can be synchronized also.

Changes: This release adds index-specific spell checking. It fixes
highlighter highlighting without summarizing. It adds an optional classpath
for indexing to resolve a Tomcat JSDK classpath issue. It simplifies
narrowBy rendering logic. It improves search performance by optimizing on
Facet Search.

  by Sapon Oleg (http://freshmeat.net/users/xsaper/)
  Mon, Nov 24th 2008 21:12

Internet :: Log Analysis

About: Free-SA is tool for statistical analysis of daemons' log files,
similar to SARG. Its main advantages over SARG are much better speed
(7x-20x), more support for reports, and W3C compliance of generated
HTML/CSS reports. It can be used to help control traffic usage, to control
Internet access security policies, to investigate security incidents, to
evaluate server efficiency, and to detect troubles with configuration.

Changes: The license was changed to the GPLv3+. Experimental support for
NetCache and Blue Coat logs via Squid 2.x native log format has been added.
The log format autodetection feature has been removed because it appeared
useless and slow. A 'skip_errors' experimental option for skipping
erroneous log file records has been added. To specify a year value for
syslog-based log formats, a SYSLOGYEAR macro was added. Other small fixes
were implemented.

[026] - gtkaml 0.2.2.1
  by b100dian (http://freshmeat.net/users/b100dian/)
  Mon, Nov 24th 2008 00:39

Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers

About: gtkaml is an XML syntax and an XML parser that extends the
Vala.Parser and transforms all your XML tags into a valid Gtk+ UI class. It
features a compact XML syntax for describing the way Gtk widgets are laid
out in a (new) custom widget you're creating. Code "islands" (written in
Vala) are used for widget signal handling and other
methods/signals/properties that you're introducing. It doesn't depend on an
external library at run-time, and it is much more readable than the usual
UI boilerplate.

Changes: This release has been upgraded to Vala 0.5.1. Issue #15 ("Should
take interfaces into account when searching an add method described in an
implicits file") has been fixed.

[027] - gWaei 0.8.0
  by Zachary Dovel (http://freshmeat.net/users/pizzach2/)
  Mon, Nov 24th 2008 00:26

Education

About: gWaei is a Japanese-English dictionary program for the GNOME
desktop. It is made to be a modern drop-in replacement for Gjiten, with
many of the same features. The dictionary files it uses are from Jim
Breen's WWWJDIC project and are installed separately through the program.
It features easy dictionary installation, support for searching using
regular expressions, streaming of results so the interface is never frozen,
and a simple interface that makes sense.

Changes: The build system now uses automake. There have also been a number
of bugfixes (including crashers). The toolbar is now hidden by default.
History search items now appear in the history menu. The "Most Relevant
results" and "Other results" headers have been removed from the results
pane. The results are still organized in that fashion, but they are now
easier to read without the blaring red text. The search algorithm has been
tweaked some more.

  Mon, Nov 24th 2008 18:27

Multimedia
Software Development :: Libraries

About: Kate is a codec for karaoke and text encapsulation for Ogg. Most of
the time, this would be multiplexed with audio/video to carry subtitles,
song lyrics (with or without karaoke data), etc, but it doesn't have to be.
A possible use of a lone Kate stream would be an e-book. Moreover, the
motion feature gives Kate a powerful means to describe arbitrary curves, so
hand drawing of shapes can be achieved. This was originally meant for
karaoke use, but can be used for any purpose. Motions can be attached to
various semantics, like position or color, so scrolling or fading text can
be defined.

Changes: This release fixes a wildly embarrassing bug: forgetting to copy
data in kate_packet_init. It fixes a size mixup when removing markup at
decode time. It adds a couple of tests for make check. It adds extra
validation checks to the decoder.

About: mylvmbackup is a Perl script for quickly creating backups of a
MySQL server's data files. To perform a backup, mylvmbackup obtains a read
lock on all tables and flushes all server caches to disk, makes an LVM
snapshot of the volume containing the MySQL data directory, and unlocks the
tables again. The snapshot process takes only a small amount of time. When
it is done, the server can continue normal operations while the actual file
backup proceeds. The actual backup can be performed by using tar, rsync, or
rsnap.

Changes: The --quiet option was added. Error handling was made more robust

  by Graham Knop (http://freshmeat.net/users/Haarg/)

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
Office/Business

About: WebGUI is a content management framework built to allow average
business users to build and maintain complex Web sites. It is modular,
pluggable, and platform independent. It was designed to allow the people
who create the content to manage it online, rather than content management
taking up the time of busy IT staff. WebGUI comes with a full host of
features including shopping cart, subscriptions, forums, photo galleries,
FAQs, link lists, blogs, SQL reports, a Web services interface, and a very
configurable user privilege and profiling system.

Changes: This release introduces a new pluggable account system
integrating profile, inbox, friends, and more. It also includes a brand new
survey, enhancements to the Shop, versioning, and around three dozen
bugfixes.

System :: Monitoring

About: Webminstats is a Webmin module designed to store system information
in an rrdtool database and to display historic (hourly, daily, weekly,
monthly, and custom) graphs. It is modular in design, so as to be able to
log everything from CPU usage to email box size.

Changes: The upgrade code was completely rewritten to work without any
data loss. A new module based on netstat was added to monitor input and
output connections. A bug was fixed in the remove parameter code.

[060] - Xplico DEFT4
  by Gianluca Costa (http://freshmeat.net/users/gcosta/)
  Mon, Nov 24th 2008 18:21

Communications :: Email
Security :: Forensics
System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: The goal of Xplico is to extract the applications data from an
Internet traffic capture. For example, from a pcap file Xplico extracts
each email (POP, IMAP, and SMTP protocols), all HTTP contents, each VoIP
call (SIP), and so on. Xplico isn't a packet sniffer or a network protocol
analyzer; it's an IP/Internet traffic decoder or network forensic analysis
tool (NFAT).

Changes: This release adds Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) and Printer
Job Language (PJL) dissectors. It has console-mode execution (without a
GUI), acquisition and processing in real time (only in console mode),
access to every HTTP message (with a GUI in PHP), and browsing all images
transported over HTTP.
