[005] - Cowloop 2.11
by AT Consultancy (http://freshmeat.net/users/atconsultancy/)
Wed, Dec 15th 2004 06:13
About: The cowloop-driver is a copy-on-write loop driver (block device)
which can be used on top of any other block driver. It shields the lower
driver from any write access. Instead, it diverts all write-accesses to an
arbitrary regular file, called the cowfile. When a modified block is read
again later on, the cowloop-driver obtains the block from the cowfile,
while non-modified blocks are obtained from the original read-only device.
This mechanism allows block-devices to be used in a read-write fashion
without modifying the underlying block-device itself.

[008] - DES with Plan 9 Support 1.0
by Boyd Roberts (http://freshmeat.net/users/MajorWillard/)
Wed, Dec 15th 2004 21:53
Security :: Cryptography
About: There are two parts to this: a Unix DES implementation, and some
Plan 9 support for Unix that uses the DES implementation. The Plan 9
support gives you encrypt(2) and netkey(2). The only significant
difference between this DES and the Plan 9 DES is that Plan 9 packs a DES
key into 7 bytes, while this uses 8. In the Plan 9 support, there's a
function (des9key) that does the key conversion (Plan 9 to 8 bytes). The
versions of encrypt and decrypt should call des9key() before invoking
deskey(), so it's transparent. The DES implementation has a Makefile,
manual entry, and test program. The Plan 9 support comes with no Makefile
support; that's up to you.
Changes: This version is rock solid and runs in VN Inferno.

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors
About: The GLIPS Graffiti editor is a cross-platform SVG graphics editor
based on Batik and developed by ITRIS. It features shape tools
(rectangles, circles, ellipses, lines, polygons, and polylines), path
tools (Bezier curves, conversion to a path, union, subtraction, and
intersection), basic text support, and image import (SVG or Bitmap).
Supported transformations are translate, resize, rotate, and skew. A
property manager is available for each object, and a resource manager
takes care of gradients, patterns, markers, and filters. It requires Java
VM 1.4.1 or higher. It is a part of the GLIPS Project, which aims to be a
PLC cross-platform development environment.
Changes: The scrolling has been improved on the SVG canvas, and mouse
wheel events are now supported. Icons representing resources are displayed
in the resource dialog and in the properties dialog when choosing a
resource. The entire UI has been improved. New alignment actions have been
created, allowing the user to align the center of shapes horizontally and
vertically. A color picker, a DOM viewer, and a memory monitor are
available. SVG files may be exported as PNG, JPEG, and TIFF.

Internet
Security
About: GNU SASL is an implementation of the Simple Authentication and
Security Layer framework and a few common SASL mechanisms. SASL is used
by network servers such as IMAP and SMTP to request authentication from
clients, and in clients to authenticate against servers. The library
includes support for the SASL framework (with authentication functions
and application data privacy and integrity functions) and at least
partial support for the CRAM-MD5, EXTERNAL, GSSAPI, ANONYMOUS, PLAIN,
SECURID, DIGEST-MD5, LOGIN, NTLM, and KERBEROS_V5 mechanisms.
Changes: SASLprep related improvements to PLAIN, LOGIN, and CRAM-MD5. The
DIGEST-MD5 mechanism is disabled by default, pending a rewrite for the new
API. The LOGIN client now uses authentication identity, not authorization
identity. The PLAIN client now works when no authorization identity is
provided. The NTLM mechanism now supports the 'domain' field. Callback
backwards compatibility is improved. Disabling Libidn/SASLprep should now
result in an RFC 2222 compliant library. There are documentation fixes.
Self-test bugs have been fixed.

[031] - makepp 1.40
by Gary Holt (http://freshmeat.net/users/holt/)
Wed, Dec 15th 2004 11:53
Software Development :: Build Tools
About: makepp is a syntax-compatible reimplementation of make designed for
more reliable builds and simpler makefiles. It scans automatically for
include files, handles builds involving multiple directories in a much
simpler and more reliable fashion, supports transparently putting object
files in a different directory, can automatically import files from a
central repository, won't rebuild if only comments and indentation have
changed, knows to rebuild if the build commands change, has wildcards
which match files which don't exist yet but can be built, and can be
extended by embedding Perl code in the makefile.
Changes: Support for new command line options: -n (to display commands
that would execute rather than executing them), --assume-old,
--assume-new, --dont-build, and --keep-repository-symlinks. Client-server
mode for fast startup. A rewritten interface to handle scanning for
include files. Support for verilog. Many bugfixes. Support for GNU make's
define statement. Reorganized and corrected documentation.

[034] - MoSSHe 1.2.9
by Volker Tanger (http://freshmeat.net/users/vtanger/)
Wed, Dec 15th 2004 06:16
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
About: MoSSHe (MOnitoring with SSH Environment) is a simple, lightweight
(both in size and system requirements) server monitoring package designed
for secure and in-depth monitoring of a number of typical Internet
systems. It was developed to keep the impact on network and performance
low, and to use a safe, encrypted connection for in-depth inspection of
the system checked. It is not possible to remotely run (more or less
arbitrary) commands via the monitoring system, nor is unsafe cleartext
SNMP messaging necessary (yet possible). A read-only Web interface makes
monitoring and status checks simple (and safe) for admins and helpdesk.
Checking scripts for remote and local systems (disk space, load,
processes, users), common services (SMTP, POP3, HTTP) and SNMP queries are
included.
Changes: The HTTP check was improved with much easier checking for URLs.
Unfortunately, this breaks compatibility. A bug that disabled logging was
fixed.

System :: Networking :: Monitoring
About: Nagios (formerly Netsaint) is a daemon written in C that is
designed to monitor networked hosts and services. It has the ability to
notify contacts (via email, pager or other methods) when problems arise
and are resolved. Host and service checks are performed by external
"plugins", making it easy to write custom checks in your language of
choice. Several CGIs are included in order to allow you to view the
current and historical status via a Web browser, and a WAP interface is
also provided to allow you to acknowlege problems and disable
notifications from an internet-ready cellphone.
Changes: This release adds support for passive and regularly scheduled
host checks, adaptive monitoring features, service groups, and host
freshness checks. There are CGI speed improvements, the addition of new
event broker API, and many other enhancements.

by Dmitry Dvoinikov (http://freshmeat.net/users/ddvoinikov/)
Wed, Dec 15th 2004 06:44
Communications
Internet
System :: Networking
About: Nest is a secure IP VPN tunnel for FreeBSD. It connects two LANs
over an insecure WAN. Nest works on the IP packet level. Its features
include packet authentication and integrity checking (with 96-bit
SHA1-derived HMAC), packet encryption (with Blowfish and 160-bit key CBC
mode), replay protection, adjustable packet queuing, and compression. The
VPN traffic appears on the WAN as a bidirectional stream of IP packets or
as a unidirectional ICMP request/response stream. The latter case allows
the establishment of VPN tunnels through certain firewalls.
Changes: A compatibility problem with FreeBSD 5.3-STABLE and 4.10-STABLE
was fixed. This problem was caused by a sudden change that was made in the
semantics of divert sockets under these versions of FreeBSD. This prevented
nest from working in ICMP response sending mode.

by NXAdmin (http://freshmeat.net/users/NXAdmin/)
Wed, Dec 15th 2004 06:40
Communications
Desktop Environment
Software Development
About: NoMachine NX is a fast terminal server system based on the X11
protocol. In addition, NX also translates and embeds the MS Windows
Terminal Server and VNC protocols into X/NX. NX is an order of magnitude
faster than VNC or X11 and can run on bandwidth as narrow as 10 kBit/sec.
By embedding RDP and RFB, it enables users to compress and accelerate
remote Windows and VNC sessions. NX lets you work fluently even across
slow links like modems. The NX project provides a suite of libraries and
X11 proxying agents implementing efficient compression and optimized
transport of X11, SMB, IPP, HTTP, and arbitrary protocols like audio over
the Internet.
Changes: This is a deep rework of the NX Client for Mac OS X. It is
intended to solve all the X server interoperability issues that were still
present in the recent releases. Support for the old NXDarwin code base has
been removed. Starting from this version, the client will require the
Apple X11 server to be installed. This version has been extensively tested
on Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther). Except some minor GUI rendering problems, it
has proven to work very reliably.

About: NuFW is a authentication firewall suite: the gateway authorizes a
packet depending on which remote user has sent it. It can also set quality
of service on a per-user basis and log user activities into a SQL database.
Furthermore, the server architecture uses an external authentication source
such as an LDAP directory.
Changes: A new authentication module, named "system", has been added. It
provides authentication against PAM, and the groups of a user are the same
as the ones on the operating system. This brings all the extensions of PAM
and NSS to NuFW. TLS certificate authentication is now supported.

convenient way to connect rich media clients with data and business logic
residing on a server. The library, together with a
WebServicesConnectivityAddOn, also allows developers to easily consume Web
services from within Flash MX.
Changes: PHP4-specific bugs in Gateway.php were fixed, including the issue
in which methods with mixed/upper-case names could not execute before the

About: QTads is a graphical, non-HTML interpreter for Tads games. Both
Tads 2 as well as Tads 3 games are supported. It uses Trolltech's Qt
library, which means it's highly portable. It has some nice features, like
fullscreen mode, text justification, margins, and font anti-aliasing. It
fully supports Unicode in Tads 3, ISO Latin character mapping files in
Tads 2, and the full set of Multimedia Tads character entities in both
Tads 2 and 3 (like "curly" quotes and typographical dashes).
Changes: Due do a stupidity-related mistake, version 1.6 wouldn't compile
nor run with versions lower than 3.3 of Qt. The problem has been fixed.
Compiling and running with 3.1.x and 3.2.x versions of Qt is possible
again. Another important change is the compile-time detection of the

[056] - s11n 1.0.0RC1
by stephan beal (http://freshmeat.net/users/s11n/)
Wed, Dec 15th 2004 11:57
About: s11n ("serialization") is a C++ library for easily serializing a
wide variety of objects, including PODs, arbitrary streamable types, and
user-defined Serializable types. It is completely data-format agnostic and
currently supports 8 data formats, including three XML dialects and one
MySQL-powered back-end. Its author, with atypical hubris, truly believes
s11n to be the most advanced, most flexible, simplest-to-use, and utterly
most powerful serialization framework ever implemented in C++.
Changes: The xxx_serializer_proxy classes have been renamed to
xxx_serializable_proxy because the original names were confusing
misnomers. The class s11n::list::streamable_list_serializable_proxy has

proxy for i/ostreamable types (it produces much more compact output).

[065] - Squashfs 2.1
by Phil Lougher (http://freshmeat.net/users/lougherp/)
Wed, Dec 15th 2004 06:35
Software Development :: Embedded Systems
System :: Archiving :: Compression
System :: Filesystems
About: Squashfs is a highly compressed read-only filesystem for Linux 2.4
and Linux 2.6. It uses zlib to compress files, inodes, and directories.
All blocks are packed to minimise the data overhead, and block sizes of
between 4K and 32K are supported. It is intended to be used as a
filesystem for archival use and in embedded systems where low overhead is
needed, and has been tested on PowerPC, i586, SPARC, and ARM
architectures.
Changes: This release introduces indexed directories, which considerably
speed up directory lookup for directories which are greater than 8K in
size. All directories are now also sorted alphabetically, which further
speeds up directory lookup. Many smaller improvements have also been made
to this release.

[071] - Syslinux 2.13
by H. Peter Anvin (http://freshmeat.net/users/hpa/)
Wed, Dec 15th 2004 17:29
System :: Boot
About: SYSLINUX is a collection of boot loaders for the Linux operating
system which operates off MS-DOS floppies, network servers using PXE
firmware, or from CD-ROMs. It is intended to simplify first-time
installation of Linux, rescue disks, and other uses for boot floppies. A
SYSLINUX floppy can be manipulated using standard MS-DOS (or any other OS
that can access an MS-DOS filesystem) tools once it has been created; and
requires only a very small DOS or Linux program to create in the first
place. It also includes MEMDISK, a tool for booting legacy operating
systems from nontraditional media like PXE or CD-ROM.
Changes: This release is a bugfix release for the recently released 2.12,
in which MEMDISK command line parsing was broken. It adds a "raw" mode to
MEMDISK that can work around certain broken versions of DOS.
