  Thu, Dec 16th 2004 17:27

Desktop Environment
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio :: CD Playing
Office/Business

About: AntiRight is a lightweight and scripted desktop environment that
uses the Motif toolkit. Development is carried out with a minimalistic
philosophy in mind. The software consists of a text editor, a desktop
panel, a sticky note utility, system management panels, a file manager, a
calculator interface, a color/background selector, a command launcher, a
simple help system, an email and Web browser launcher, a theme selector, a
preferences utility, a series of system monitors including a graphical load
meter, and a CD player. The desktop panel consists of launcher icons, a
launcher panel button, a screen lock button, a virtual desktop switcher,
an alarm utility, a command launcher, a clock, a user counter, a load
meter, and a mail checker.

Changes: This release introduces an improved help system, new window
layering functionality, and a unified desktop panel.

Education
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics

About: Asymptote is a powerful script-based vector graphics language for
technical drawing, inspired by MetaPost but with an improved C++-like
syntax. It provides for figures the same high-quality level of typesetting
that LaTeX does for scientific text. It is a programming language as
opposed to just a graphics program, allowing it to exploit the best
features of script (command-driven) and graphical user interface (GUI)
methods. High-level graphics commands are implemented in the language
itself, allowing them to be easily tailored to specific applications.

Changes: This release fixes bugs in the asydef environment, the
defaultfontsize and texpreamble commands, the graph axis and labelling
routines, the path bounding box, nullpath, the tension atleast joiner,
and child processes. New routines firstcut and lastcut were added, along
with a MetaPost compatibility module. The documentation was updated,
particularly the 2d graph and axis routines. User-defined == operators
are now allowed on structures. A preliminary port of featpost3D and a
feynman module were also included.

  by bebbo (http://freshmeat.net/users/bebbo/)
  Thu, Dec 16th 2004 10:54

Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Mail Transport Agents
Communications :: Email :: Mailing List Servers

About: BEJY is a modular server application. It is packaged, by default,
as a Web application container and mail server with SSL. It has
functionality similar to inetd, and has some helper classes/functions to
ease the implementation of new protocols. It provides a generic
multithreaded TPC/IP server implementation with optional SSL support,
covering the complete connection and thread management. Each supported
service provides its protocol implementation. The current version comes
with HTTP, SMTP, POP3, and IMAP protocol implementations. The HTTP
protocol implementation also contains a servlet engine, a JSP 1.2 engine,
a handler to invoke CGI, and other useful things. The mail protocols
require a database using JDBC, as MySQL, MSSQL, and others.

Changes: This version contains several fixes for the servlet container and
some enhancements to the mail server component. Most important is the
ability to hook a virus detection for incoming email messages, and even
better resource utilization by using shared database connections and
multiple spooler threads.

  Thu, Dec 16th 2004 03:55

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Multimedia :: Video
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes

About: ffmpeg-php is an extension for PHP that adds an easy to use
object-oriented API for accessing and retrieving information from movies
and audio files. It has methods for returning frames from movie files as
images that can be manipulated using PHP's image functions. This works
well for automatically creating thumbnail images from movie files, and
it's fast enough to extract thumbnails on the fly so that thumbnail images
don't need to be stored. ffmpeg-php is also useful for reporting the
duration and bitrate of audio files (mp3, wma...). ffmpeg-php can access
many of the formats supported by ffmpeg.

Changes: A memory leak in GD image allocation was fixed and a few minor
bugfixes and cleanups were made. Better build instructions were provided
and a new getFrameIntoImage() function that can reuse a single GD image
when grabbing multiple frames was added. This is a bit faster than the
other getFrame functions when processing a sequence of frames.

About: fmeta generates a table of metadata for files specified on the
command line. The metadata items include (but are not limited to) size,
accessed/modified/changed times, owner/ group, and a (SHA-256) message
digest of the file's contents. This allows you to search for, e.g., all
new files, all changed files, files over a certain size, all files owned
by a certain user, and so on. It has the functionality of find (with the
additional digest), with the speed of locate. It writes the database to
standard output as a table, one record per line, and with record fields
separated by tabs. This makes the output easy to process with other tools
like a spreadsheet, database server, Perl, awk, and so on.

works on Linux, IRIX, Solaris, HP/UX, AIX, Tru64 Unix, Windows 9x,NT,2K
(VC++, GNUWIN32, Borland, VisualAge C++), FreeBSD, and Sequent.

Changes: New colors were added to FXApp for the selected menu foreground
and background. Some long-standing issues with FXPopup menu handling code
were fixed. APIs like fxcheckTIF() and fxcheckJPG() were added. These APIs
read a portion of the image file from the stream, determine if the image
format is recognized, and then rewind the stream back to the same point. A
problem with the focus navigation code eating key/modifier combinations
other than the ones it's supposed to was fixed.

About: Guifications is a Gaim plugin that adds notification windows
styled after those found in MSN, deadaim, and newer versions of AIM,
Yahoo instant messenger, and a lot of other applications.

Changes: This release adds the ability to select a theme or no theme for
buddies, contacts, and groups. Notifications covering taskbars on Win32
were fixed, as were the monitor preferences, and the context menu, so it
works on all notifications. Editing a theme name for a theme that was
loaded, then saved, now unloads and auto reloads. Duplicating text items
now actually works without crashing gaim. A lot of preferences were
removed or moved.

About: IP Sentinel is a tool that tries to prevent unauthorized usage of
IP addresses within an ethernet broadcast domain by answering ARP
requests. After receiving faked replies, requesting parties store the MAC
in their ARP tables and will send future packets to this invalid MAC,
rendering the IP unreachable.

Changes: This version made it possible to block hosts with a certain MAC
address regardless of their IP. This feature could help to isolate hosts
infected by worms or viruses. The default options were changed.

[038] - Linux Intrusion Detection System 2.2.1pre1 for kernel 2.6.9 (2.6)
  by Huagang Xie (http://freshmeat.net/users/xhg/)
  Thu, Dec 16th 2004 14:44

Security
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: The Linux Intrusion Detection System (LIDS) is a patch which
enhances the kernel's security by implementing a reference monitor and
Mandatory Access Control (MAC). When it is in effect, chosen file
access, all system/network administration operations, any capability use,
raw device, memory, and I/O access can be made impossible even for root.
You can define which programs can access specific files. It uses and
extends the system capabilities bounding set to control the whole system
and adds some network and filesystem security features to the kernel to
enhance the security. You can finely tune the security protections
online, hide sensitive processes, receive security alerts through the
network, and more.

Changes: This version fixed a bug that prevented it from working with
Fedora Core 3 by enhancing the the boot loading hooks. It also fixed a
minor compiling warning in lids_sysctl.c and a segment fault error in

[039] - Mail Avenger 0.5.5
  by xxx (http://freshmeat.net/users/fmxxx/)
  Thu, Dec 16th 2004 17:26

Communications :: Email

About: Mail Avenger is a highly-configurable, MTA-independent SMTP server.
It lets users run messages through filters like ClamAV and SpamAssassin
during SMTP transactions, so the server can reject unwanted email before
assuming responsibility for its delivery. Other unique features include
TCP SYN fingerprint and network route recording, SPF (sender policy
framework) as a general policy language, qmail-style delivery of extension
addresses, validation of sender addresses through SMTP callbacks, mail-bomb
protection, integration with kernel firewalls, and more.

Changes: When people send you mail, Mail Avenger now guesses the operating
system of the client machine based on characteristics of its TCP
implementation. The guess is recorded in the X-Avenger header, so you can
see what OSes are sending you spam and/or feed the information to your
Bayesian filter.

[042] - metisse 0.3.5
  by Olivier Chapuis (http://freshmeat.net/users/olivierlri/)
  Thu, Dec 16th 2004 06:20

Desktop Environment

About: Metisse is an experimental X desktop with some OpenGL capacity. It
consists of a virtual X server called Xwnc, a special version of FVWM, and
a FVWM module FvwmAmetista. Xwnc is a mix of Xvnc and XDarwin. It draws
nothing on your screen; everything is drawn into pixmaps. Similarly to
Xvnc, but with a different protocol, Xwnc can send these pixmaps (and
other information) to a "viewer". FvwmAmetista is such a viewer; it uses
OpenGL for rendering the X desktop into a window of a "regular" 3D
accelerated X server.

Changes: An Xwnc crash caused by off pixmap rendering was fixed. A crash
which occurred at a color depth of 16 was fixed, so Xwnc can be ran at
depth 16 again. Some gcc-3.4 MMX code from X.org for composite operation
and filling was added, providing a small speed improvement. FvwmAmetista
Image encoding handling was improved.

  Thu, Dec 16th 2004 03:53

About: Pcal prints nice-looking PostScript (or HTML) calendars, and has
more options than you can shake a stick at. Its real power is its ability
to create personalized calendars by marking 'events' (for example,
payday). Lcal is similar to Pcal, but it generates lunar calendars.

Changes: This version added the ability to embed EPS images in
monthly-format PostScript calendars, several new languages, 'legal' and
'tabloid' paper sizes, and the ability to specify paper size at runtime.
The 'pre-processor'-like directives were improved along with the HTML user
interface for CGI. "Friday the 13th" events were pre-defined and events
were specified in the native language. Additional sample calendar event

automatically generating abstract syntax trees, thus greatly reducing the
need for explicit semantic actions.

Changes: This release fixes two bugs that resulted in index out of bounds
exceptions. It also improves the accuracy of parse error messages.

(Shift+F5) was limited to 100 rows in order to avoid long waits with large
tables. Database connections can now be named for better identification.
CTRL+F5 executes the command under the cursor. The Option Result Window
now opens a new window for each result set when executing multiple
selects. Clicking in the history window and pressing Shift+F2/F3 adds
commands from the history buffer to the command window. Selection was
changed from popup to frame. Auto help was provided for column names.
