System :: Boot :: Init
System :: Networking
System :: Systems Administration

About: /etc/net is intended to become the replacement for traditional
Linux network configuration scripts. It tries to enable all iproute2
features for network interfaces while keeping simple-to-extend features
and adding new interface types.

Changes: This release adds an initial QoS framework and an initial
recursion and dependencies processing framework, fixes logger, DHCP, and
initscript argc bugs, changes ZCIP to IPv4LL, renames etcnet.init to
network.init, and introduces sysconfig/network to ease migration.

[003] - Another File Integrity Checker 2.6-0
  by Gerbier Eric (http://freshmeat.net/users/gerbier/)
  Fri, Dec 17th 2004 06:08

Security
System :: Systems Administration

About: afick is another file integrity checker, designed to be fast and
fully portable between Unix and Windows platforms. It works by first
creating a database that represents a snapshot of the most essential parts
of your computer system. You can then run the script to discover all
modifications made since the snapshot was taken (i.e. files added,
changed, or removed). The configuration syntax is very close to that of
aide or tripwire, and a graphical interface is provided.

Changes: This release adds two new options, exclude_re to have a regular
expression filter and max_checksum_size to limit the checksum size (for
better speed, less security).

About: BDesktopClock is an attractive graphical clock for the Linux
desktop. It features customizable settings for the date and time display
format, as well an option to always be on top.

Changes: This release adds an option to change the color of the hour,
minute, and second hands, and an option to change the font of the text
used for the date and time. From the unannounced 1.0.1 release, graphics
were cleaned up (especially the corners), spelling was fixed, and the
makefile was fixed so that the build and install parts are now separate
targets.

About: jsgal is a dynamic Web-based gallery. However, rather than
generating the gallery pages on a server using scripts, it is implemented
in Javascript and DHTML and generates the pages in the client's browser.
No offline generation of the Web pages is required; only a list of images
has to be maintained, which allows easy updating and extending of
galleries. This allows you to host dynamic galleries on servers without
scripting support, or on local filesystems (e.g. CD-ROMs).

Changes: The HTML page creation method was change to directly modify the
DOM model, which resulted in a major performance improvement.

About: Moodss is a modular monitoring application, which supports
operating systems (Linux, UNIX, Windows, etc.), databases (MySQL, Oracle,
PostgreSQL, DB2, ODBC, etc.), networking (SNMP, Apache, etc.), and any
device or process for which a module can be developed (in Tcl, Python,
Perl, Java, and C). An intuitive GUI with full drag'n'drop support allows
the construction of dashboards with graphs, pie charts, etc., while the
thresholds functionality includes warning by emails and user defined
scripts. Any part of the visible data can be archived in an SQL database
by both the GUI and the companion daemon, so that complete history over
time can be made available from Web pages, common spreadsheet software,
etc.

Changes: A new psbyuser module, analogous to the ps module but with data
aggregated by the user, was added. Almost all remote capable modules now
use an optimized non-blocking implementation, using events or threads.
Minor improvements and bugfixes were also made.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio :: CD Playing
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio :: CD Ripping
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Conversion

About: MoreAmp is an audio player that loads memory or a vdisk with many
songs so the hard disk can spin down while playing them (saving batteries
and reducing noise). It plays and makes ogg, flac, wav, aif, mp3, and aac
files and plays audio CDs and wma, mp1, mp2, m2a, and m4a files. It has an
easy-to use 31-band equalizer, separation, and a silent center channel.

Changes: There are now stubs for the Unix CD functions, so a Unix build
should be ok without the --without-cdreader option. LAME 3.96.1 is now
used (it was 3.95.1). Some bugs were fixed: the volume controls no longer
affect the system master volume, the equalizer now adapts to sample rates
other than 44100, loaded FLAC files now play from memory instead of from
disk, and the directory selector in OS X now works correctly. The code was
cleaned up (ongoing), the documentation was updated, and the Win32 build
instructions were simplified.

  by Jim Jozwiak (http://freshmeat.net/users/jozwiak/)
  Fri, Dec 17th 2004 14:44

Scientific/Engineering :: Medical Science Apps.

About: nut is nutrition software to record what you eat and analyze your
meals for nutrient composition. The database included is the USDA Nutrient
Database for Standard Reference, Release 17, which contains 6,839 foods and
128 nutrients. This database contains values for vitamins, minerals, fats,
calories, protein, carbohydrates, fiber, etc., and includes the essential
polyunsaturated fats, Omega-3 and Omega-6. Nutrient levels are expressed
as a percentage of the Daily Value, the familiar standard of food labeling
in the United States, but also can be fully customized. Foods can be added
from recipes or food labels, and nutrient intake can be graphed. The
program is completely menu-driven and there are no commands to learn.

Changes: This release fixes the incorrect "Analyze Meals" screen header
that says "Record Meals". It fixes the function that guesses recipes of
packaged foods, which worked properly but had a variable and a constant of
the same value reversed so that user modifications to increase the
precision would fail.

[060] - SCUBA::Table::NoDeco 0.03
  by Paul Fenwick (http://freshmeat.net/users/pjf/)
  Fri, Dec 17th 2004 21:24

About: SCUBA::Table::NoDeco provides the ability to perform useful
calculations using dive-tables, including calculating dive groups and
maximum no-decompression times for repetitive dives. A selection of
tables are available. The module assumes that the diver is using air as
their breathing gas.

Changes: A programming error in PADI surface tables was fixed. At best
this resulted in an error being thrown when used, and at worst, incorrect
results may have been returned. An off-by-one error in surface interval
calculations was corrected. The PADI surface tables were tweaked. These
tables are generated from an algorithm that does not exactly match the
printed tables. The reasons for these inconsistencies are open to
speculation. The module was updated to deal with different minimum and
maximum surface intervals per table.

[064] - spammergrok 0.96-beta
  by peek (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelpeek/)
  Fri, Dec 17th 2004 10:06

About: Spammergrok is a script that extracts URLs from spam emails and
downloads data from them a set number of times in an attempt to waste a
spammer's bandwidth. It has default limitations on the number of times it
will download and the throughput rate at which it downloads.

Changes: Bugs have been fixed and code cleaned up. A complete RFC 2396 URL
parser has been written (slower, but much more accurate, and requires GNU
gawk). There are many other updates/changes, including an updated man
page. Some changed command line options, some new command line options,
and a completely new resource file and temporary file management system.
This version is incompatible with older resource files and will ignore
them if found.

[072] - XDBCMS 0.06
  by Carl Beech (http://freshmeat.net/users/carlbeech/)
  Fri, Dec 17th 2004 16:25

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management

About: XDBCMS is a Web-based, multi-user CMS that can manage any number of
Web sites, each site with any number of pages, and each site organised in a
tree-based menu that can be any depth. Where XDBCMS differs from most
content management systems is that it actually generates a stand-alone Web
site, which requires no database to drive it, can be 'released' to any Web
server, and would be able to cope with very large numbers of users. For
the authors, it features a WYSIWYG editor, similar to MS-Word in
appearance, allowing full control over the format (tables, fonts,
graphics, etc.) of each individual page. It allows multiple authors and
features a group-based security system.

Changes: This release adds a new menu format facility that allows you to
have a default, Javascript tree, CSS transparent, or horizontal tabbed
menu. It also includes a facility to allow a choice of 'built by xdbcms'
logo. The old header and footer menu options are now removed as these are
superceded. A clickable link is provided when generating a Web site, which
displays the generated ite in a new browser window.
