Office/Business :: Office Suites
Other/Nonlisted Topic

About: Archiv-G is an Internet-capable document archive and form center.
It keeps all documents in one database. For very simple TeX documents, no
client software apart from a normal Web browser is needed. To edit more
complex documents, a checkout or checkin should be done to use the
preferred TeX editing tools. The TeX source of all TeX documents can be
viewed and edited with a Web browser. PDF or Postscript can be generated
on the fly. Microsoft Word and Excel documents are supported through a
plugin which stores the original document and a plain-text version.

Changes: This release is a full rewrite of BuFRS (Business Forms Retrieval
System). It featured a number of improvements to the installation process
and support for Microsoft Word and Excel using a VBA/C++ plugin. The
license now is commercial with free trial.

System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: Bandwidth Monitor NG is a small and simple curses-based bandwidth
monitor for Linux, BSD, and Mac OS X, or other systems with either
/proc/net/dev, netstat (Linux and BSD), getifaddrs, sysctl, or
libstatgrab. You can choose whether to show all interfaces or only those
interfaces that are up. Output is possible as plain console, curses, CSV,
or HTML. Unlimited interfaces are supported and will be added dynamically
while running.

Changes: This release adds BSD and Mac OS X support, as well as many
configure options and things like a configure script, config files, packet
error hightlighting, and HTML output. Supported input methods are
/proc/net/dev, netstat (BSD and Linux), getifaddrs, sysctl, and
libstatgrab.

[005] - cacti 0.8.6c (Development)
  by Ian Berry (http://freshmeat.net/users/raxnet/)
  Sun, Dec 19th 2004 17:23

System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: Cacti is a complete frontend to RRDTool. It stores all of the
necessary information to create graphs and populate them with data in a
MySQL database. The frontend is completely PHP driven. Along with being
able to maintain graphs, data sources, and round robin archives in a
database, Cacti also handles the data gathering. There is SNMP support for
those used to creating traffic graphs with MRTG.

Changes: Various bugs discovered since the release of 0.8.6b have been
fixed. They include bugs related to the poller, graph creation, and user
management. A few smaller features also made it into this release,
including the often requested multiple-OID index support.

Communications :: Chat
Communications :: Chat :: AOL Instant Messenger

About: centericq is a text mode menu- and window-driven IM interface that
supports the ICQ2000, Yahoo!, AIM, IRC, MSN, Gadu-Gadu, and Jabber
protocols. It allows you to send, receive, and forward messages, URLs,
SMSes (both through the ICQ server and email gateways supported by
Mirabilis), contacts, and email express messages, and it has many other
useful features. An internal RSS reader and a LiveJournal client are also
provided.

Changes: The client now builds with GCC 3.4. A new --debug command line
parameter was added, making it unnecessary to re-build the program to
enable debug output. IRC accounts can now include two passwords: one for
Nickserv and the other one for regular IRC authentication. Online and
free-for-chat modes now have the same priority in contact list sorting.
Unicode characters in RTF-encoded ICQ messages are no longer lost. A
segfault that occurred when accepting Yahoo! file transfers was fixed. For
online users, the time for which those contacts have been online is now
shown.

  Sun, Dec 19th 2004 00:02

System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: fwsnort translates snort rules into an equivalent iptables ruleset.
By making use of the iptables string match module, fwsnort can detect
application layer signatures which exist in many snort rules. fwsnort adds
a --hex-string option to iptables, which allows snort rules that contain
hex characters to be input directly into iptables rulesets without
modification. In addition, fwsnort makes use of the IPTables::Parse Perl
module in order to (optionally) restrict the snort rule translation to
only those rules that specify traffic that could potentially be allowed
through an existing iptables policy.

[026] - Kernel TCP Virtual Server 0.0.18
  by Wensong Zhang (http://freshmeat.net/users/wensongzhang/)
  Sun, Dec 19th 2004 00:03

System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Networking
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: Kernel TCP Virtual Server is a Layer-7 switching software in the
Linux Virtual Server framework. It can do application-level load balancing
(such as content-based scheduling) inside the Linux kernel. The reason for
implementing it inside the kernel is to avoid the overhead of context
switching and memory copying between user-space and kernel-space. Although
the its scalability is lower than that of IPVS (IP Virtual Server), it is
flexible, because the content of the request is known before the request
is redirected to the real server.

Changes: This version includes one fix for a sock lock issue, which
probably only appeared on SMP platforms.

anything on a hard disk due to on-the-fly decompression.

Changes: Many package updates were made and kernel 2.4.27 and 2.6.9 (with
ACPI) were included. KDE 3.3.1 was included from Debian/unstable along
with FreeNX 0.2.5, a Java security update (1.4.2_06), a few graphics cards
entries, a menu entry for Samba browsing, and isdntool-knoppix for text and
GUI-based ISDN configuration. Some documents were removed to reduce the ISO

[041] - OSSP cfg 0.9.7

  Sun, Dec 19th 2004 15:17

Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Operating System
Text Processing

About: OSSP cfg is a ISO-C library for parsing arbitrary C/C++-style
configuration files. A configuration is sequence of directives, each
directive consists of zero or more tokens, and each token can be either a
string or again a complete sequence. This means the configuration syntax
has a recursive structure and allows you to create configurations with
arbitrarily-nested sections. The configuration syntax also provides
complex single/double/balanced quoting of tokens,
hexadecimal/octal/decimal character encodings, character escaping, C/C++
and shell-style comments, etc. The library API allows importing of a
configuration text into an Abstract Syntax Tree (AST), traversing the AST,
and optionally exporting the AST again as a configuration text.

Changes: The cfg_node_get() function has been fixed after the recent
introduction of LOAN/GIFT/COPY argument passing semantics. This unbreaks
the Perl API's unpack() function.

vocabularies that consist of "commands" and "responses". When the
operator speaks a command (such as "Web browser"), the computer will
execute the designated response (e.g. "mozilla"). Versions 0.7 and
greater have extendable 'desktop plugins' that allow for desktop (KDE,
etc.) navigation and control.

Changes: Magic word capabilities were added. This allows the system to run
in guarded or continuous mode. A change was made from 'festival_server' to
a piped connection to the main festival interface. The current message

[061] - vsound 0.6
  by fuzzbucket (http://freshmeat.net/users/fuzzbucket/)
  Sun, Dec 19th 2004 17:20

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Capture/Recording

About: vsound allows you to record the output of any standard OSS program
that uses /dev/dsp without having to modify or recompile the program. It
uses the same idea as the esddsp wrapper and preloads a library that
intercepts calls to open /dev/dsp and returns a handle to a normal file.
It also intercepts IOCTLs on that file handle and logs them to help
convert the audio data from its raw form. It then uses sox to convert the
raw data to the desired file format.

Changes: This release adds an --autostop option that will kill the player
after a set number of seconds of inactivity (defined as the time that the
/dev/dsp device is closed). The non-functional --resample option has been
fixed.

Software Development :: Libraries

About: XmlBlaster is XML based MOM (Message oriented Middleware) with a
lot of features. It is a publish/subscribe and point-to-point MOM server
which exchanges XML-encoded messages. Communication with the server is
based on CORBA (using JacORB), RMI, XML-RPC, native socket, or a
persistent HTTP plugin. Subscribers can use XPath expressions to filter
the messages they wish to receive and add their own MIME-based filter
plugins. C/C++, Java, Perl, Python, VisualBasic.net, C#, and PHP client
demos are included in the xmlBlaster test suite, and Tcl and Python demo
clients are scheduled. XmlBlaster also provides a browser callback
framework, allowing browsers (Netscape, Mozilla, MSIE) to receive instant
callbacks over a persistent http connection. A security plugin framework
allows authentication/authorization in many ways. Currently there are
LDAP- and passwd-based plugins available.
