Multimedia :: Video
Multimedia :: Video :: Conversion
About: ANDREW's Not a DVD Ripping and Encoding Wizard, but an interactive
wrapper to simplify the use of oggenc, mencoder, and mkv/ogmmerge to
create, from a DVD, one or more Matroska or Ogg Media files containing an
ISO MPEG-4 compliant video track, encoded using the FFmpeg libavcodec or
the XviD codec, one or more AC-3 or Vorbis audio tracks, and a chapters
index.
Changes: XviD video encoding support has been added. Estimation of
Matroska and Ogg Media overhead is improved. Merging of AC-3 audio tracks
containing some non AC-3 data into Ogg Media files has been added.
Fractional quality levels are allowed for Vorbis audio encoding.
Resolution optimization used incorrect input values and output the wrong
results. Non-root users weren't able to halt the system even if they were
allowed to do that (the bug wasn't fixed correctly in version 1.0.1).

About: Apwal is a simple application launcher. It displays icons around
the mouse with transparency when it is called. The position of the icons
is relative to the current position of the cursor. An easy to use editor
with an icon selector allows users to configure it. Filters are available
to simplify the search of icons (by extension, resolution, recursive path
search, name filter with wildcard pattern, etc.).
Changes: New GTK2 widgets were integrated. Code which became obsolete due
to new GTK2 features was cleaned up. The "--config" option was added, and
provides a simple way to create submenus. A busy cursor is now shown when
loading icons.

Mon, Dec 20th 2004 09:00
Desktop Environment :: Gnome
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: MIDI
About: Beast is a powerful music composition and modular synthesis
application. It offers multiple input methods like multitrack, piano roll,
and pattern editing and supports skins. On the technical side, it has a
wide range of abilities like sequencing, unlimited undo/redo history,
real-time synthesis with multiprocessor support, full duplex 32-bit audio
rendering, precise timing down to sample granularity, on demand loading of
partial wave files, on the fly decoding of various sample formats, aliasing
free oscillators, and full Scheme scripting support.
Changes: The most important change in this release is probably the reduced
CPU consumption due to lowered scope updating priority. Very convenient are
the newly added -n<nicelevel> and -N (don't renice) options. A nice bonus
in this release are the FFT-based spectrographs for module output
channels. The experimental PortAudio driver is new. As usual, there have
been many language translation updates, in particular Canadian English,
British English, Czech, Dutch, and Spanish.

Communications :: Email :: Mail Transport Agents
About: BitDefender AntiSpam and AntiVirus for CommuniGate Pro provides
proactive antivirus and antispam protection of message traffic at the
email server level. All messages, both sent and received, are scanned in
real-time for spam and viruses, avoiding possible infections and
preventing anyone from sending an infected message. The AntiSpam
technology (SpamTOX) includes heuristic scanning, WBL, and URL filters,
scanning more than 100 emails/sec. BitDefender claims 100% detection rate
for all viruses in the wild (ITW) through its powerful scanning engines.
It integrates itself into CommuniGate Pro as a filter.
Changes: the "Update Pushing" mechanism has been introduced to allow
"pushing" of updates to BitDefender clients instead of "pulling" them from
the update servers. New antispam heuristics that can be updated have been
added in order to detect the latest spam tricks. The statistics are now
saved over restarts and show detailed information about scanned, infected,
suspicious, or spam messages or parts and the action taken. A new bdsafe
tool has been added to automate product upgrade and patching.

by Joe Morrison (http://freshmeat.net/users/jdm/)
Mon, Dec 20th 2004 03:04
Database :: Front-Ends
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Compilers
About: Eleven is a programming language for creating robust, scalable Web
applications quickly and easily. It offers a roughly 20x programmer
productivity increase over traditional server programming languages like
ASP, PHP, and JSP by automating state management and taking control of the
application's look and feel. From high-level source code with a simple,
C-like syntax, the compiler generates complete, ready-to-run
implementations in PHP or mod_perl. Applications maintain their state in a
relational database and are inherently fault-tolerant, secure, and
scalable.
Changes: Many new features were added, most notably an elegant mechanism
called "livetables" that allows applications to read and write arbitrary
database tables. For example, a one-line command invoking the "edit"
function on a livetable can generate a complete Web-based table editor,
automatically creating SQL queries on demand to select, filter, sort, and
page through the table. Other new features included row variables
(essentially state-safe hash tables) and dynamic enum variables for
creating drop-down menus whose values and labels are automatically
populated from tables.

[063] - parapin 1.0.0
by Al (http://freshmeat.net/users/ahooton/)
Mon, Dec 20th 2004 08:51
Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Hardware
About: parapin makes it easy to write C code under Linux that controls
individual pins on a PC parallel port. This kind of control is very useful
for electronics projects that use the PC's parallel port as a generic
digital I/O interface. Parapin goes to great lengths to insulate the
programmer from the somewhat complex parallel port programming interface
provided by the PC hardware, and comes as a user-space C library, or
linked as part of a Linux kernel module.
Changes: This is the first production/stable release for parapin. Changes
since the previous beta2 release include fixing a small Makefile problem
(one header file required for building kernel modules was not installed
correctly) and reordering some conditional #include directives in
parapin-linux.h to enable parapin to cleanly build on a wider variety of
distributions.

[074] - runit 1.2.0 (Development)
by Gerrit Pape (http://freshmeat.net/users/pape/)
Mon, Dec 20th 2004 00:15
System :: Boot :: Init
About: runit is a daemontools alike replacement for SysV-init and other
init schemes. It currently runs on GNU/Linux, *BSD, Mac OS X, and Solaris,
and can easily be adapted to other Unix operating systems. runit implements
a simple three-stage concept. Stage 1 performs the system's one-time
initialization tasks. Stage 2 starts the system's uptime services (via the
runsvdir program). Stage 3 handles the tasks necessary to shutdown and halt
or reboot.
Changes: In this version the runsv program made controlling of services
through commands normally sent by runsvctrl configurable. Arbitrary
actions through external programs can optionally be specified, and
signalling of the service can be disabled if desired. The status
information of services in finish state and services failing on start-up
has changed.

[075] - s11n 1.0.0RC2
by stephan beal (http://freshmeat.net/users/s11n/)
Mon, Dec 20th 2004 10:14
About: s11n ("serialization") is a C++ library for easily serializing a
wide variety of objects, including PODs, arbitrary streamable types, and
user-defined Serializable types. It is completely data-format agnostic and
currently supports 8 data formats, including three XML dialects and one
MySQL-powered back-end. Its author, with atypical hubris, truly believes
s11n to be the most advanced, most flexible, simplest-to-use, and utterly
most powerful serialization framework ever implemented in C++.
Changes: This release adds lib manual cleanups and corrections, a fix to
the classloading parts regarding registration of abstract base types
(they'll work now when registering with S11N_ABSTRACT_BASE), and a couple
of minor build tools fixes. This is likely to be the last RC release

by jemfinch (http://freshmeat.net/users/jemfinch/)
Mon, Dec 20th 2004 00:14
Communications :: Chat :: Internet Relay Chat
About: Supybot is a clearly-written Python IRC framework and bot, intended
to be both easily extensible and very flexible. Several modules are
included by default. Numerous plugins are already written, including
Google, Factoids, RSS, Quotes, and Relay. Plugins and their commands
achieve greater utility via command nesting, something that no other IRC
bot does. The user database is based on "capabilities" rather than obscure
flags or arbitrary numeric "userlevels", giving the bot flexibility and
fine-grained control (think ACLs vs. standard *nix permissions).
Developing your own additions to the bot is simple with the base classes
provided; writing a new command for the bot is as simple as writing a
function. Unlike many other IRC frameworks, this simplicity is achieved at
no cost to generality, which lets new programmers and old programmers alike
feel at home in the framework.
Changes: A configuration variable was added to the Relay plugin for
relaying non-PRIVMSG messages as NOTICEs instead of PRIVMSGs. A shuffle
command was added to the Utilities plugin for the purpose of shuffling the
arguments it's given. Significant bugs in AutoMode, Channel, Config,
Network, Observer, and RSS were fixed.

[099] - zsync 0.1.5
by Colin Phipps (http://freshmeat.net/users/cph/)
Mon, Dec 20th 2004 14:57
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
About: zsync is a client-side implementation of the rsync algorithm. It
allows updating of files from a remote Web server without requiring a
full download or a special remote server application. It uses a metafile,
which must be created on the server, to determine which parts of a file
the user already has; it then downloads the remaining parts via HTTP. No
special server or Web server module is needed. It can also look inside
gzip files, allowing efficient update transfers even when files are
compressed.
Changes: Improvements to the HTTP code.
