System :: Diagnostics
About: Aranha is an application that uses an XML-RPC layer to retrieve
information from one or more servers. The type of information gathered is
available via plugins, and can be displayed or archived in several
different ways. The data is gathered in Round Robin Databases (integrated
with rrdtool) and can be accessed using the CGI interface avaliable from
the system. Plugins are very easy to write.
Changes: This release includes several plugins: a connections plugin,
which measures TCP/UDP connections; a disk plugin, which measures disk
I/O; a CPU plugin; a DF plugin, which uses Inline::C to fetch disk usage;
a PS plugin, which counts processes based on a regexp; an ACPI plugin,
which fetches ACPI info; a memory plugin, which measures memory and swap
usage; and a net plugin, which mesures the number of bytes transferred on
a network interface.

Tue, Dec 21st 2004 10:15
Communications :: Internet Phone
Communications :: Telephony
About: asterisk-oh323 adds H.323 support to the ASTERISK soft PBX. It does
this by interfacing the OpenH323 library to ASTERISK through a loadable
module. The package provides the channel driver as well as a wrapper in a
shared library form. It is able to initiate and receive calls to and from
H.323 endpoints, and has been successfully tested with the H.323 terminals
on the OpenH323 site (ohphone, openphone), GnomeMeeting, Microsoft
NetMeeting, Cisco routers, H.323 Snom phones, and other hardware and
software H.323 IP phones.
Changes: This version includes many stability fixes, automatic gatekeeper
re-registration, and correct updating of the DIALSTATUS variable. A new
build option enables the generation of a channel driver that has
statically linked the OpenH323/Pwlib/oh323wrap libraries.

About: Barcode Writer in Pure Postscript implements the printing of many
barcode formats entirely within level 2 PostScript, so that the process of
converting the input string into the printed output is performed by the
printer itself. This avoids the need to re-implement the barcode
generation process whenever your language needs change. The project
supports most major barcode formats including EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E,
ISBN, Code 128-B, Code 39, Interleaved 2 of 5, Postnet, Code 2 of 5, and
Codabar.
Changes: The Supported Symbologies section of the documentation was
enhanced to include samples of all the supported barcode types.

[007] - BitDefender AntiVirus and AntiSpam for Postfix 1.6.1-1
by BitDefender (http://freshmeat.net/users/linuxdefender/)
Tue, Dec 21st 2004 22:56
Communications :: Email :: Filters
Communications :: Email :: Mail Transport Agents
Security
About: BitDefender for Postfix provides proactive protection of message
traffic at the email server level, eliminating the risk to the entire
network that could be caused by a negligent user. All messages, both sent
and received, are scanned for spam and viruses in real time, avoiding the
possible infections and preventing anyone from sending an infected
message. BitDefender claims 100% detection rate for all viruses in the
wild (ITW) through its powerful scanning engines.
Changes: An "Update Pushing" mechanism was introduced to allow the
"pushing" of updates to BitDefender clients instead of "pulling" them from
the update servers. New antispam heuristics that can be updated were added
in order to detect the latest spam tricks. Statistics are now saved over
restarts and show detailed information about scanned, infected,
suspicious, or spam messages or parts and the action taken. A new bdsafe
(BitDefender Swiss Army kniFE) tool was added to automate product
upgrading and patching.

[016] - DKMS 2.0.4
by lerhaupt (http://freshmeat.net/users/lerhaupt/)
Tue, Dec 21st 2004 22:32
System :: Systems Administration
About: DKMS (Dynamic Kernel Module Support) is a framework where device
driver source can reside outside the kernel source tree so that it is very
easy to rebuild modules as you upgrade kernels. This allows Linux vendors
to provide driver drops without having to wait for new kernel releases (as
a stopgap before the code can make it back into the kernel), while also
taking out the guesswork for customers attempting to recompile modules for
new kernels. For veteran Linux users it also provides some advantages since
a separate framework for driver drops will remove kernel releases as a
blocking mechanism for distributing code.
Changes: This release fixed architecture detection in the case where
multiple RPMS own the /lib/modules/$kernel directory. The ia32e check was
fixed to not require kernel sources.

[017] - DualRpcServer 1.2.0
by threadsafe (http://freshmeat.net/users/threadsafe/)
Tue, Dec 21st 2004 10:14
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
About: DualRpcServer is an easy-to-use Java framework for bi-directional
RPC method calls between a client and server. No RMI stubs or J2EE remote
interfaces are needed. It keeps session state between calls and works
great with Swing and SWT rich clients. Clients can be deployed with Java
Web Start.
Changes: This release adds the ability for the server to access all
current client connections. This enables you to send messages or call
methods on all connected clients. Another new feature is that the server
handlers are visible to each other within a single client connection. This
eliminates the need for a hash map to store and share session data between
a connection's server handlers. The starter applications have been
updated.

System :: Networking
About: Ettercap is a network sniffer/interceptor/logger for ethernet LANs.
It supports active and passive dissection of many protocols (even ciphered
ones, like SSH and HTTPS). Data injection in an established connection and
filtering on the fly is also possible, keeping the connection synchronized.
Many sniffing modes were implemented to give you a powerful and complete
sniffing suite. Plugins are supported. It has the ability to check whether
you are in a switched LAN or not, and to use OS fingerprints (active or
passive) to let you know the geometry of the LAN.
Changes: The hosts scan can now be canceled by the user, and the netmask
can be specified within the GUI. The checksum_check option was renamed to
checksum_warning, and a new option to prevent the check was introduced.
The dns_spoof plugin was greatly enhanced, and a new plugin was
introduced. Many bugfixes were made, especially for the Windows port.

About: fastutil extends the Java Collections Framework by providing
type-specific maps, sets, lists, and queues for Java with a small memory
footprint and fast access and insertion. The classes implement their
standard counterpart interfaces (e.g., Map for maps) and can be plugged
into existing code. Besides the usual features, fastutil provides
reference-based containers (which do not use equals() to compare objects)
and linked structures. Most iterators provided by fastutil classes are
bidirectional, or even implement the standard list iterator interface.

Tue, Dec 21st 2004 22:17
System :: Archiving :: Compression
About: GNU `tar' saves many files together into a single tape or disk
archive, and can restore individual files from the archive. It includes
multivolume support, the ability to archive sparse files, automatic
archive compression/decompression, remote archives and special features
that allow `tar' to be used for incremental and full backups. It also
includes `rmt', the remote tape server (the `mt' tape drive control
program is in GNU `cpio').
Changes: Compressed archives are now recognised automatically and it is no
longer necessary to specify -Z, -z, or -j options to read them. When
restoring incremental dumps, the --one-file-system option prevents
directory hierarchies residing on different devices from being purged.
--strip-path was renamed to --strip-components for consistency with the
GNU convention. Skipping archive members is sped up if the archive media
supports seeks. A new --exclude-caches option was added, which instructs
tar to exclude cache directories automatically on archive creation.

Communications :: Chat
Communications :: Chat :: AOL Instant Messenger
Security :: Cryptography
About: Off-the-Record (OTR) Messaging is a GAIM plugin which allows you to
have private conversations over the instant messaging system of your
choice. It provides encryption, which prevents someone who intercepts your
instant messages from reading them; authentication, which ensures that the
correspondent is who you think it is; and perfect forward secrecy, which
ensures that no previous conversation is compromised if you lose control
of your private keys.
Changes: If a Man-in-the-Middle steals both Alice's and Bob's DSA private
keys, he can perform a birthday attack to try to get his session id with
each end to match. Since the session id was only 64 bits long, his work
was only 2^32, which is not enough. This release makes the session id the
whole SHA-1 hash, instead of truncating it, to protect against this
unlikely scenario.

[063] - pmacct 0.7.9
by Paolo Lucente (http://freshmeat.net/users/plucente/)
Tue, Dec 21st 2004 02:59
Internet :: Log Analysis
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration
About: pmacct is a small set of IP accounting and aggregation tools.
Aggregation of IP traffic revolves around the concept of primitives (VLAN
id, source and destination MAC addresses, IP addresses, networks, AS,
ports, and IP protocol are supported) that may be employed alone or
arbitrarily combined with others to form complex aggregation methods. It
supports custom historical breakdown, packet sampling, filtering and
tagging, recovery actions, and triggers. Both libpcap (and promiscuous
mode if required) and NetFlow are supported.
Changes: A new data preprocessor that filters out data via conditionals
and checks was added. For example, aggregates that have accounted just a
few packets or bytes may be discarded or saved through the recovery
mechanism. New environment variables are available when firing triggers
from SQL plugins. These included the effective number of aggregates
encapsulated into SQL queries and number of INSERT and UPDATE queries. The
logfile players now support a '-n' option for playing arbitrary portions of
the logfile and '-t -d' for printing the logfile content. Options for
overriding SQL parameters were also added.

Communications :: Email :: Filters
Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: POP3
About: pop3spam is a POP3 client which connects to a POP3 server and
deletes unsolicited mail. It's possible to check for messages that exceed
a certain limit and to scan header lines for special patterns (regular
expressions). If a message has been identified as unsolicited, it can be
deleted directly from the POP3 server without the need to download it
first. Eventually your normal mail-retrieval utility (e.g. fetchmail) can
gather all (cleaned) mail as usual.

[068] - Quantum GIS 0.6 (Development)
by Gary Sherman (http://freshmeat.net/users/mrccalaska/)
Tue, Dec 21st 2004 22:29
Scientific/Engineering :: Geographical
Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization
About: Quantum GIS (QGIS) is a Geographic Information System (GIS) for
Linux/Unix. It will offer support for vector and raster formats. It
currently supports spatially enabled tables in PostgreSQL using PostGIS
and common GIS vector formats such as Shapefiles. Due to the complexity of
creating a feature-rich GIS application, support for various data stores
will be added in a phased approach. Ultimately, QGIS will be able to edit
shapefiles and display geo-referenced rasters (TIFF, PNG, and GEOTIFF),
create map output, and support database tables. A plugin feature to
dynamically add new functionality is planned.
Changes: This release added a PostgreSQL query builder, GEOS support for
identifying features, and scale dependent rendering. New options allow
better control over rendering, including an interrupt feature. Attribute
actions allow you to run an external program based on the contents of an
attribute field. The editing tools were improved and now include a
function for creating a new shapefile for editing. The Windows version is
now packaged in a setup program to simplify installation. Several of the
core plugins were enhanced, including the delimited text, SPIT, graticule
builder, and the GPS plugin.

[069] - remerge 2.0.0
by Tim Horton (http://freshmeat.net/users/TheHortonsVT/)
Tue, Dec 21st 2004 15:13
System :: Installation/Setup
About: remerge is a simple Web interface to Gentoo Linux's 'portage'
package management and building system. It supports installation,
uninstallation, and upgrading of Portage packages.
Changes: Threading-related memory leaks have been fixed, and this release
uses 1/100 the amount of memory that 1.2.0 did. The remerge cache creation
code has been rewritten, and the slowest part of syncing should be faster
by a huge amount. Large portions have been rewritten to utilize more
memory and speed efficient code; every single line has been checked and
double-checked for optimum performance. A queue has been added where you
can watch the status of each pending action and all completed actions.

[077] - tinyglot.pl 1.1
by Alessandro Ranellucci (http://freshmeat.net/users/Sound/)
Tue, Dec 21st 2004 22:16
Software Development :: Localization
About: tinyglot.pl is a useful script for maintaining localization of
strings files in Cocoa applications. It compares two files (the new
unlocalized one and the old localized one) and merges their strings into a
new file. New strings that have no translation are put at the end of the
file so that it's easy to complete them. This script reads and generates
both plain .strings files (UTF-16 encoding) and XML plist files (UTF-8)
encoding.
Changes: This version fixed a couple of bugs that prevented the reading of
strings using escaped quotes or unescaped keys as in InfoPlist.strings

[078] - Valgrind 2.2.0
by Martin Schröder (http://freshmeat.net/users/martinschrder/)
Tue, Dec 21st 2004 07:58
Software Development :: Testing
About: Valgrind is a tool that helps you find memory management problems
in programs. When a program is run under Valgrind's supervision, all reads
and writes of memory are checked, and calls to malloc/new/free/delete are
intercepted. As a result, Valgrind can detect problems such as use of
uninitialized memory, reading/writing of memory after it has been freed,
reading/writing off the end of malloced blocks, reading/writing
inappropriate areas on the stack, memory leaks in which pointers to
malloced blocks are lost forever, passing of uninitialized and/or
unaddressable memory to system calls, and mismatched use of malloc/new/new
[] vs. free/delete/delete [].
Changes: Compared to the previous stable release (2.0.0), 2.2.0 has
much-improved signals/syscalls/threads support, works well on recent Linux
distributions, improves SSE2/SSE3 support, and brings you Massif, a new
tool for investigating space use of your programs. There are dozens of
other improvements and refinements, and hundreds of bugfixes. 2.2.0 builds
and runs its regression tests on Red Hat 7.2, 7.3, 8.0, and 9, Fedora Core
2, and SuSE 9.1. It should work on Linux distributions with kernel 2.4 or
2.6 and glibc 2.2.x or 2.3.x.
