System :: Networking :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration

About: Atop is an ASCII full-screen performance monitor, similar to the
top command. At regular intervals, it shows system-level activity related
to the CPU, memory, swap, disks and network layers, and it shows for every
active process the CPU utilization in system and user mode, the virtual and
resident memory growth, priority, username, state, and exit code. The
process level activity is also shown for processes which finished during
the last interval, to get a complete overview about the consumers of
things such as CPU time. Atop only shows the active system-resources and
processes, and only shows the deviations since the previous interval.

Changes: Analysis of disk I/O and network utilization on the process level
was enabled. This requires kernel patches that maintain additional
per-process counters. Various bugfixes were made and the man page was
modified.

[010] - BitDefender AntiVirus and AntiSpam for Sendmail 1.6.1-1
  by BitDefender (http://freshmeat.net/users/linuxdefender/)
  Wed, Dec 22nd 2004 01:30

Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Filters
Communications :: Email :: Mail Transport Agents

About: BitDefender Antivirus and Antispam for Sendmail is a content
inspection solution for Linux mail servers that provides proactive
protection for message traffic at the email server level filtering viruses
and spam. Both sent and received messages are scanned in real-time,
avoiding possible infections and preventing anyone from sending an
infected message. It claims a 100% detection rate for all viruses in the
wild through its powerful scanning engines.

Changes: An "Update Pushing" mechanism was introduced to allow the
"pushing" of updates to BitDefender clients instead of "pulling" them from
the update servers. New antispam heuristics that can be updated were added
in order to detect the latest spam tricks. Statistics are now saved over
restarts and show detailed information about scanned, infected,
suspicious, or spam messages or parts and the action taken. A new bdsafe
(BitDefender Swiss Army kniFE) tool was added to automate product
upgrading and patching.

About: clcal provides a terminal-based on-screen reminder of appointments,
important dates, and other events over a pre-defined range of days.

Changes: The ability to print previous entries using negative period
modifiers has been added, for example: "clcal -d -7" will print the
calendar entries for the seven days prior to today. This function has also
been extended to searches, such that "clcal -s dentist -w -4" will search
the four weeks prior to today for all calendar entries containing the
string "dentist". The clcal options --searchfwd, -b, and --searchbck are
now deprecated by the introduction of the use of negative numbers as
search period modifiers, and will be removed from later versions of clcal.

Communications
Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Libraries

About: COID consists of an object-oriented networking library and tools
that automatically generate a lightweight communications layer from C++
class declarations. Instantly functioning object-oriented networking can
be done just by decorating a C++ class with a few keywords and
implementing stream operators for custom types. The coidgen tool
automatically extracts designated classes and methods from specified
header files and generates a corresponding client class and host
dispatcher. The server library manages networked and local connections and
provides various services to running objects. The communication layer
establishes either remote connection through TCP or direct (vtable)
connection between the client and the server (if they reside in the same
process).

Changes: A connect bug was fixed. findi/finds console commands were added.

[016] - Conary 0.12.1
  by Michael K. Johnson (http://freshmeat.net/users/johnsonm/)
  Wed, Dec 22nd 2004 14:58

Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup

About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.

Changes: Major changes in flavor handling. The client now passes a
requested flavor to the repository, which scores available flavors and
provides the best match. The local flavor is now defined in part by files
in /etc/conary/use/. Repository ACLs now control almost everything,
including anonymous access of all types, which has to be explicitly
enabled with user 'anonymous' password 'anonymous'.

Internet
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries

About: Connect Daily, a Web-based calendaring system, allows multiple
users to add and edit calendar events using a Web browser. The calendar
display can be directly integrated into your Web site. It provides
advanced capabilities for managing resources and facilities. The approval
processes allow many users to edit calendars, with the assurance that all
items added are approved. It supports event download to MS Outlook and
Palm OS PDAs. Export to iCal clients like KOrganizer, Evolution, and Apple
iCal is supported. Authentication to LDAP directories is also supported.

Changes: The resource Gantt chart view is now available to users who are
not logged in. The publicAdd.jsp page now allows users to add resources
when creating events. The column width for the month view calendar is now
fixed. A unique CSS style is now called to allow special formatting of the
current date cell in the calendar. HTML formatted email templates are now
supported for notification and reminder messages. A non-US locale related
bug in the Palm sync program was fixed. Another bug in the Palm sync
program was fixed, allowing it to work with Tungsten series PDAs.

  Wed, Dec 22nd 2004 11:01

Database
Database :: Front-Ends

About: DbWrench is multi-vendor, multi-platform database design and
synchronization software. Features include a syntax highlighting SQL
query editor, support for many of today's most popular databases, a
graphic entity relation diagram (ERD) designer, and the ability to
forward and reverse engineer databases. Its multi-vendor and
multi-platform functionality makes it ideal for heterogeneous database
environments.

Changes: This release focused on making common tasks easier and
eliminating repetitive tasks. Tables can now be quickly populated with
common columns, such as Id and Name, using Column Templates. It allows
users to define templates for these common columns and have them
automatically added to new tables upon creation. Simple foreign keys can
be added much more quickly by selecting the child table from a diagram and
then selecting the parent table from a drop down menu.

Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics

About: Gmsh is an automatic 3D finite element grid generator (primarily
Delaunay) with built-in CAD and post-processing facilities. Its design
goal is to provide a simple meshing tool for academic problems with
parametric input and up to date visualization capabilities. It is built
around four modules: geometry, mesh, solver, and post-processing. The
specification of any input to these modules is done either interactively
using the graphical user interface (based on FLTK and OpenGL) or in ASCII
text files using Gmsh's own scripting language.

Changes: Many enhancements were made in the post-processing module, such
as improved display of vector fields, generalized raise mode, new
integration, and eigenvector plugins. The memory footprint for mesh
visualization was greatly reduced. Mesh I/O was made faster. Bugfixes were
made in all parts of the program.

Adaptive Technologies
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Operating System

About: OpenSSI Clusters for Linux uses HP's NonStop Clusters for Unixware
and various open source technologies to provide a full, highly-available
SSI (Single System Image) clustering environment for Linux. Goals include
availability, scalability, and manageability from commodity servers.

Changes: OpenSSI 1.2.0 is a stable release, suitable for production use.
New features include several CFS performance enhancements and the
integration of LVS-NAT. POSIX process groups and multi-threaded
applications can atomically migrate as a group. Also, processes can
migrate while holding file record locks. When clusternode_shutdown is

Software Development

About: Papyrus is a XML-based reporting langauge for PostgreSQL and MySQL.
It allows you to generate well-formatted reports in LaTeX, PDF, PostScript,
HTML, ANSI, and XML. The XML is expressed in a formatting-oriented style to
allow you to develop a wide range of reports. SQL is then embedded into the
report to give you the desired data. Papyrus is commandline-driven, and
data arguments can be passed into the report. Equations and expressions
can also be carried out on data.

Changes: A GUI frontend for GNOME was developed for running reports. It
allows you to select the reports you wish to run and then asks you for the
arguments that are used for generating that report.

About: Snurf is a blogging system. It differs from many similar systems in
that it uses the filesystem for data storage and generates static HTML

  by jemfinch (http://freshmeat.net/users/jemfinch/)
  Wed, Dec 22nd 2004 03:15

Communications :: Chat :: Internet Relay Chat

About: Supybot is a clearly-written Python IRC framework and bot, intended
to be both easily extensible and very flexible. Several modules are
included by default. Numerous plugins are already written, including
Google, Factoids, RSS, Quotes, and Relay. Plugins and their commands
achieve greater utility via command nesting, something that no other IRC
bot does. The user database is based on "capabilities" rather than obscure
flags or arbitrary numeric "userlevels", giving the bot flexibility and
fine-grained control (think ACLs vs. standard *nix permissions).
Developing your own additions to the bot is simple with the base classes
provided; writing a new command for the bot is as simple as writing a
function. Unlike many other IRC frameworks, this simplicity is achieved at
no cost to generality, which lets new programmers and old programmers alike
feel at home in the framework.

Changes: A bug in User.register that prevented people from registering
with the bot was fixed. Topic.separator was added for changing the topic
separator for a channel, and Misc.apropos was fixed to not be
case-sensitive. A bug that would cause channel-specific configuration
variables to pick up non-channel children was fixed along with some minor
bugs that prevented AutoMode from working.

Changes: This should be the final beta release. A number of improvements
were made to performance in various areas of the API. Depending on the
nature of programs and documents, performance should increase somewhere
between 0% and 20% compared to beta 7. There are no user-visible changes
in this release. A few classes have undergone major rewrites, and a couple
of non-public classes have been removed. In addition, some packaging issues
that affected Windows systems have been resolved.

Terminals :: Terminal Emulators/X Terminals
Utilities

About: xtermcontrol enables dynamic control of XFree86 xterm properties.
It makes it easy to change colors, titles, fonts, and the geometry of a
running xterm, as well as to report the current settings of the
properties. Window manipulations such as (de)iconify, raise and lower,
maximize and restore, and reset are also supported. It also lets advanced
users issue any xterm control sequence.

Changes: All dependencies on Xlib have been removed.
