[001] - amavisd-new 2.2.1
by Mark Martinec (http://freshmeat.net/users/mmartinec/)
Thu, Dec 23rd 2004 09:19
Communications :: Email :: Filters
About: amavisd-new is a high-performance and reliable interface between
MTAs and one or more content checkers, including virus scanners, and/or
the Mail::SpamAssasin Perl module. It talks to the MTA via (E)SMTP or
LMTP, or by using helper programs. No timing gaps exist in the design,
which could cause a mail loss. It is normally positioned at or near a
central mailer, not necessarily where the user's mailboxes and final
delivery takes place.
Changes: The pax(1) utility is supported in preference to cpio(1),
avoiding a potential security problem in decoding tar or cpio archives.
Additional tests are performed at startup time on the proper protection of
the configuration file. The concept of "clean but inconclusive" av scanner
result was introduced. Error recovery was improved to remove unexpected
directories. Missing Perl modules needed by SA when running in chroot are
pre-loaded. The new variable @newvirus_admin_maps sends virus
administrator notification only for newly encountered viruses. The av
scanner File::Scan and ripOLE decoder are supported.

[002] - aMule 2.0.0rc8
by Kry (http://freshmeat.net/users/ElKry/)
Thu, Dec 23rd 2004 02:05
Communications :: File Sharing
About: aMule is short for "all-platform eMule-like file-sharing program",
or, in short, "all-platform Mule". It's a port of the well-known eMule P2P
client for the eDonkey2000 file sharing network, supporting most of eMule
features. Additionally, it provides a small separate Web server and
command line interface to connect to a running aMule via the network. Like
its predecessors lMule and xMule, it uses wxWidgets and runs on Linux, BSD,
Solaris, Windows, and Mac OS. It also supports multiple architectures.
Changes: This release featured many bugfixes, much improved network and
sources handling, an option to select if hidden files can be shared,
darkening of stopped files, an (almost) perfectly working Web server, a
much improved daemon binary, and much better support for Mac and big
endian architectures. The Mac version can be considered almost stable now.

by krico (http://freshmeat.net/users/krico/)
Thu, Dec 23rd 2004 08:56
System :: Benchmark
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Diagnostics
About: Aranha is an application that uses an XML-RPC layer to retrieve
information from one or more servers. The type of information gathered is
available via plugins, and can be displayed or archived in several
different ways. The data is gathered in Round Robin Databases (integrated
with rrdtool) and can be accessed using the CGI interface avaliable from
the system. Plugins are very easy to write.
Changes: Plugins are now displayed in alphabetical order. A new client
layout (CGI interface) was implemented, including a logo and a better
appearance. A kernel 2.4 compatibility bug was fixed. A TODO item about
the frontend stopping when 1 host fails was fixed. It now continues for
all hosts that work. A TIMEOUT was added to client requests so that if a
host is "down" it takes only TIMEOUT seconds to fail (default 10).

by Erwin Bonsma (http://freshmeat.net/users/eriban/)
Thu, Dec 23rd 2004 13:16
Adaptive Technologies
Information Management
Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence
About: DIET Agents is a multi-agent platform in Java. A bottom-up design
is used to ensure that the platform is lightweight, scalable, robust,
adaptive, and extensible. It is especially suitable for rapidly developing
peer-to-peer prototype applications and/or adaptive, distributed
applications that use bottom-up, nature-inspired techniques.
Changes: The Application Reusable Components have been improved. Jobs have
been updated to obey a more strict startup and shutdown contract, and the
SubScheduler and EventManagerContainer classes have been added to
facilitate this. The functionality of the SerialJobManager has been
extended, as it now supports various modes. This is demonstrated in the
new "job" sample application, which also illustrates how to use most of
the newly added jobs. In the core layer, the visualisation models have
been fully separated from their implementation. There are many other
changes.

[007] - DNSDusty 0.5
by Jeffrey Layton (http://freshmeat.net/users/poochiereds/)
Thu, Dec 23rd 2004 13:14
Internet :: Name Service (DNS)
About: DNSDusty is an uncomplicated Web-based DNS management tool. It does
all of its modifications via signed dynamic updates, and gets info on zones
via zone transfers. Thus, it does not require any external databases, and
plays along well with other tools that do dynamic updates (such as DHCP).
DNSDusty is written as a Perl CGI script, so it should work with most Web
servers.
Changes: The interface has been overhauled. All functionality is on one
page, so no external Web pages are needed. There is code cleanup and
better use of subroutines.

Text Processing :: Filters
About: DSPAM is a server-side statistical anti-spam agent for Unix email
servers. It masquerades as the email server's local delivery agent and
effectively filters spam using a combination of de-obfuscation techniques,
specialized algorithms, and statistical analysis. The result is an
administratively maintenance-free, self-learning anti-spam tool. DSPAM has
yielded real-world success rates beyond 99.9% accuracy with less than a
0.01% chance of false positives.
Changes: A problem with DSPAM's handling of signed messages was fixed.
Support for reading from a streamlined blackhole list server was added. A
bug was fixed, allowing preferences extensions to function with storage
profiles. A fix for trusted user security and daemon mode was added.

You can make each program run cyclically or only at specified times given
in the input file. You can define a run interval instead of only the
program start time. You can tell job-scheduler what to do in the program's
run interval if the program terminates, that is: run it once, rerun it, or
rerun it until its return value equals zero.
Changes: A network interface was implemented for changing, adding,
deleting, or getting information about scheduled jobs and shutting down
the scheduler.

Changes: Final GUI optimizations and several fixes were made. A count-down
timer and timer OSD has been added. The playlist will be cleared when a URL
is dropped into the video window or passed by command line (Konqueror|Open
With...). It's now possible to shut off the monitor and/or quit after
playback. When a subtitle file is opened or dropped, a dialog box asks for
the movie it belongs to. Garbage characters in titles have been fixed, as
well as a crash after changing the audio driver and (un)muting
arts-driver.

System :: Filesystems
About: MetaFS allows users to access information about their files (such
as MP3 tags or JPEG EXIF tags) easily and consistently using extended
attributes. It also allows them to easily perform fast searches using
this information. It can be easily extended by writing plugins to
support new types of metadata and uses the FUSE library to act as a
layer between user programs and the filesystem, which allows indexes to
be kept up- to-date in realtime, and eliminates the need for a
specialized metadata API.
Changes: Thisproof-of-concept release is not feature-complete and has no
searching functionality, but includes three sample plugins: "stat" for
retrieving rudimentary stat() information, "mime" for auto-detecting MIME
types, and "custom" for providing extended attribute and ACL

About: NoMachine NX is a fast terminal server system based on the X11
protocol. In addition, NX also translates and embeds the MS Windows
Terminal Server and VNC protocols into X/NX. NX is an order of magnitude
faster than VNC or X11 and can run on bandwidth as narrow as 10 kBit/sec.
By embedding RDP and RFB, it enables users to compress and accelerate
remote Windows and VNC sessions. NX lets you work fluently even across
slow links like modems. The NX project provides a suite of libraries and
X11 proxying agents implementing efficient compression and optimized
transport of X11, SMB, IPP, HTTP, and arbitrary protocols like audio over
the Internet.
Changes: Now a specific printer driver can be selected on the server side
at session startup. Windows clients can also benefit from all available
CUPS drivers, instead of the limited selection of the previous version.
The X server for Windows includes support for the XInput extension. This
allows clients using recent versions of the KDE libraries to function in
single application mode. A more reliable mechanism for detecting when
session has been successfully connected to the remote display is
implemented, eliminating one of the common sources of problems of the
previous versions.

[065] - wifiswitch 1.5
by f0rked (http://freshmeat.net/users/f0rked/)
Thu, Dec 23rd 2004 13:15
System :: Networking
About: wifiswitch is a script to greatly aide in switching between
multiple configured wireless environments for Wireless Tools-enabled wifi
cards. wifiswitch will run iwconfig, ifconfig (or dhcpcd if configured),
and route to configure the connection's settings, as well as configure
/etc/resolv.conf if desired. Settings are unique for each environment (or
access point). A string of pre-configuration commands can also be
executed before the necessary tools are run (useful for shutting down an
ethernet interface).
Changes: A DCHP environment bug has been fixed. A verbosity switch and
alternate config file option have been added. Post-config commands have
been changed to pre-config. There are major code cleanups.

[066] - WindowLab 1.25
by Nick Gravgaard (http://freshmeat.net/users/nickgravgaard/)
Thu, Dec 23rd 2004 08:39
Desktop Environment :: Window Managers
About: WindowLab is a small and simple window manager of novel design. It
has a click-to-focus but not raise-on-focus policy, a window resizing
mechanism that allows one or many edges of a window to be changed in one
action, and an innovative menubar that shares the same part of the screen
as the taskbar. Window titlebars are prevented from going off the edge of
the screen by constraining the mouse pointer. When appropriate, the
pointer is also constrained to the taskbar/menubar in order to make target
menu items easier to hit.
Changes: Some Z ordering bugs were fixed, and click-to-focus was made to
work on fullscreen windows that have lost focus. Size changes are applied
to the original non-fullscreen coordinates of fullscreen windows. All of
the function prototypes were made consistent. Windows that reconfigure
themselves without changing positions no longer move. The shortcut keys
behavior changed. gcc 3.3.x warnings were fixed, the switch statement in
handle_property_change() is no longer missing a break, and send_xmessage()
now uses an XClientMessageEvent instead of a generic XEvent.

About: Wmsensormon is a dockapp for Window Maker that utilizes lm_sensors
to monitor CPU temp, sys temp, fan speeds, and CPU voltage. It offers
configurable warnings for overheating, and the sensors displayed are
adjustible by the user with commandline parameters.
Changes: This release adds support for autodetecting the sensors chip to
use and detecting if the chosen chip is a temperature sensor chip or some
other type. A command line argument to specify which chip to use was
added. The limits for temp sensors being swapped if using the swap
argument were fixed.

[069] - x11vnc 0.7
by Karl Runge (http://freshmeat.net/users/runge/)
Thu, Dec 23rd 2004 09:10
Communications :: Conferencing
Terminals :: Terminal Emulators/X Terminals
About: x11vnc is a program that allows one to remotely view and interact
with real X displays (i.e. a display corresponding to a physical
monitor, keyboard, and mouse) with any VNC viewer. It is similar to
WinVNC and is designed to be compatible with all Unix variants and
depend on a very small set of standard libraries. It supports a growing
number of command line options, such as -nofb for dual- headed mode with
Win2VNC. It is part of the LibVNCServer project.
Changes: The XFIXES X extension is supported to show the exact cursor
shape. The remote-control option (-R) allows one to change nearly all
settings dynamically. A Tcl/Tk GUI based on the -R commands is also
provided. Overlay/multi-depth (24+8) visuals are supported on Solaris and
IRIX. Support for the XRANDR X extension enables x11vnc to adapt to
changing screen sizes or rotations. New pointer input handling algorithms
are provided via the -pointer_mode option. The man page x11vnc.1 and
x11vnc/README files were created.

[070] - XINS 1.0.1-rc1
by Ernst de Haan (http://freshmeat.net/users/znerd/)
Thu, Dec 23rd 2004 08:47
Communications
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Software Development :: Build Tools
About: XINS is a technology used to define, create, and invoke remote
APIs. XINS is specification-oriented. When API specifications are written
(in XML), XINS will transform them to HTML-based documentation and Java
code for both the client-side and the server-side. The communication is
based on HTTP. XINS competes with the complex SOAP technology. Main design
goals include simplicity, scalability, and testability. XINS is not only a
specification technology, but also an application development framework.
It offers transaction logging, unique log documentation, and active code
generation.
Changes: Main changes since XINS 1.0.0 include performance improvements
(sometimes up to 400%), memory leak fixes, and support for the old-style
(e.g. XINS 0.168) calling convention.

Security
Software Development :: Libraries
About: XmlBlaster is XML based MOM (Message oriented Middleware) with a
lot of features. It is a publish/subscribe and point-to-point MOM server
which exchanges XML-encoded messages. Communication with the server is
based on CORBA (using JacORB), RMI, XML-RPC, native socket, or a
persistent HTTP plugin. Subscribers can use XPath expressions to filter
the messages they wish to receive and add their own MIME-based filter
plugins. C/C++, Java, Perl, Python, VisualBasic.net, C#, and PHP client
demos are included in the xmlBlaster test suite, and Tcl and Python demo
clients are scheduled. XmlBlaster also provides a browser callback
framework, allowing browsers (Netscape, Mozilla, MSIE) to receive instant
callbacks over a persistent http connection. A security plugin framework
allows authentication/authorization in many ways. Currently there are
LDAP- and passwd-based plugins available.

[074] - Zabbix 1.1alpha4 (Development)
by Alexei Vladishev (http://freshmeat.net/users/hugetoad/)
Thu, Dec 23rd 2004 13:18
System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
About: Zabbix is software that monitors your servers and applications.
Polling and trapping techniques are both supported. It has a simple, yet
very flexible notification mechanism, and a Web interface that allows
quick and easy administration. It can be used for logging, monitoring,
capacity planning, availability and performance measurement, and providing
the latest information to a helpdesk.
Changes: This release introduces displaying of error reasons in case a
monitored parameter becomes unsupported or a server unavailable. Error
reasons will also be displayed for undeliverable notifications. The new
special parameter zabbix[log] will store warning and error messages
generated by the Zabbix server in the database, thus making the
information available via a Web interface. Support has been added for
plain text information in Zabbix Screens. There are several important
bugfixes.
