SQLite Tutorial
by Mike Chirico (http://freshmeat.net/~mchirico/)
Section: Tutorials
Sat, Dec 25th 2004 00:00

This article explores the power and simplicity of sqlite3, starting with
common commands and triggers. It then covers the attach statement with the
union operation, introduced in a way that allows multiple tables, in
separate databases, to be combined as one virtual table, without the
overhead of copying or moving data. Next, I demonstrate the simple sign
function and the amazingly powerful trick of using this function in SQL
select statements to solve complex queries with a single pass through the
data, after making a brief mathematical case for how the sign function
defines the absolute value and IF conditions.

[006] - ffmpeg-php extension 0.4.0_alpha
  by tkirby (http://freshmeat.net/users/tkirby/)
  Sat, Dec 25th 2004 22:44

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Multimedia :: Video
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes

About: ffmpeg-php is an extension for PHP that adds an easy to use
object-oriented API for accessing and retrieving information from movies
and audio files. It has methods for returning frames from movie files as
images that can be manipulated using PHP's image functions. This works
well for automatically creating thumbnail images from movie files, and
it's fast enough to extract thumbnails on the fly so that thumbnail images
don't need to be stored. ffmpeg-php is also useful for reporting the
duration and bitrate of audio files (mp3, wma...). ffmpeg-php can access
many of the formats supported by ffmpeg.

Changes: This release reworks API to make it more object oriented and
make objects more scriptable. This cleans up the interface and make
integrating encoding support possible. This version also fixes a major
bug in duration calculation that was causing incorrect frame counts to be
returned.

  by Christian Grothoff (http://freshmeat.net/users/grothoff/)
  Sat, Dec 25th 2004 22:44

Communications :: File Sharing
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search
Multimedia

About: libextractor is a library used to extract meta-data from files of
arbitrary type. It is designed to use helper-libraries to perform the
actual extraction, and to be trivially extendable by linking against
external extractors for additional file types. The goal is to provide
developers of file-sharing networks, file managers, and WWW-indexing bots
with a universal library to obtain meta-data about files. libextractor
contains a shell-command "extract" that, similar to the well-known "file"
command, can extract meta-data from a file and print the results to
stdout. Currently, it supports the formats HTML, PDF, PS, OLE2 (doc, xls,
ppt), StarOffice, OpenOffice, MAN, DVI, MP3 (ID3v1, ID3v2), OGG, WAV,
JPEG, GIF, PNG, TIFF, DEB, RPM, TAR(.GZ), ZIP, Real, QT, MPEG, RIFF (AVI),
ASF, and ELF. Various additional MIME types are detected. libextractor can
also be used to compute hash functions (SHA-1, MD5, ripemd160). A Java
binding (JNI) is available.

Changes: This release improves support for different character encodings
and character set conversion. For ID3 tags, the genre is now also
extracted. Support for compressed PNG comments was added.

[027] - pasmal 1.7
  by James Meehan (http://freshmeat.net/users/jamesmeehan/)
  Sat, Dec 25th 2004 12:09

System :: Networking
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: pasmal is a TCP/IP packet authentication system. When it receives a
sequence of ICMP or TCP packets to any port (open/closed), it will issue a
command on the server. It uses a "smokescreen frame" that features
encrypted authentication packets for avoiding sniffers, as well as a
TCP/UDP key for remotely activating the system. pasmal comes with an
optional Web-based administrator that can handle all its
filter/firewall/port knocking/encoding keys facilities. It also acts as an
intrusion detection system due to its sniffer capabilities.

Changes: Intrusion alert levels (depending on the intrusion time on
forbidden ports) and customizable protection were added. An access list of
authorized IP addresses to be filtered by the intrusion detection engine
was added. Code optimization of module_alert.c, pasmal.c. Customizable
features (STATICKEY option) were added to avoid high CPU usage during
sniffing. PHP customization features were added to pasmal web-admin.

[035] - Secure Back Door 0.3
  by Jordan Wilberding (http://freshmeat.net/users/diginux/)
  Sat, Dec 25th 2004 13:53

System :: Systems Administration
Terminals :: Telnet

About: Secure Back Door (SBD) is a tool that provides ultra-secure and
minimal access to a computer, which allows you to run a single command
based on a one time key. It is good if you don't want to have an SSH
server running all the time, and only want to start it when needed.
Because it is written in only a few lines of code, it is hoped that it
will be less susceptible to security exploits than a program like SSH.

Changes: This version includes server to client authentication, which
should help to reduce and almost eliminate the ability of using IP
spoofing to brute force the server, as well as the ability to do a DoS
attack on the server. There was also some code cleanup in the sockets to
reduce unneeded code. This release also contains a basic layout of the
protocol that SBD uses. It is nearing completion, and close to being
finalized.

[038] - tzls and tzx 1.04
  by perdenab (http://freshmeat.net/users/perdenab/)
  Sat, Dec 25th 2004 06:27

Utilities

About: tzls and tzx are commandline utilities for quickly unpacking or
listing the contents of various types of common Unix archive files, which
may be compressed in any of several ways. The supported compression types
are bzip2, gzip, and compress. The supported archive types are tar, cpio,
zip, rar, and arj. The tools are implemented as shell scripts, so no
compilation is required.

Changes: The ARJ and RAR formats are now supported if the required
binaries exist on the target system. The required archive and compression
binaries are now checked for. A filename extension check has been re-added
due to older file(1) commands reporting "data" for certain archive types.
file(1) on some systems cannot read from stdin; this is now handled.
bunzip2(1) on some systems requires a filename after -c, so -c is no
longer used in the script.
