[001] - Aranha server monitor 0.0.3
by krico (http://freshmeat.net/users/krico/)
Wed, Dec 29th 2004 16:02
System :: Benchmark
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Diagnostics
About: Aranha is an application that uses an XML-RPC layer to retrieve
information from one or more servers. The type of information gathered is
available via plugins, and can be displayed or archived in several
different ways. The data is gathered in Round Robin Databases (integrated
with rrdtool) and can be accessed using the CGI interface avaliable from
the system. Plugins are very easy to write.
Changes: This is the final release for this version. All plugins work with
kernel 2.4 and up now. "make test" works on any kernel as well. The INSTALL
document has a few more details. Idle apears with a "white" color (i.e.
invisible) for the CPU plugin.

Communications :: Chat
Communications :: File Sharing
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Presentation
About: Arsenal is a group collaboration and conferencing platform. It
supports presence, instant messaging (1:1 and group), sending notes and
files, a shared whiteboard, Web browsers, a file repository, and
persistent sessions. It has a plug-in architecture for easy extensibility.
SIP for audio and video conferencing is planned.
Changes: This release supports two types of audio alerts: user initiated,
where the user can send audio alerts to other users, and system events,
where there are audio alerts on login, logout, chat messages, and the
entering or exiting of a session.

[003] - ASCIIMathML 1.4.3
by Peter Jipsen (http://freshmeat.net/users/jipsen/)
Wed, Dec 29th 2004 11:42
Education
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Browsers
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
About: ASCIIMathML is a script that converts calculator-style ASCII math
notation (and many LaTeX formulas) to Presentation MathML while your Web
page loads. It works with HTML and XHTML files in Mozilla/Firefox/Netscape
7+ browsers, as well as in Internet Explorer 6 with MathPlayer. For
example, the solutions for the equation 'ax^2+bx+c=0' are expressed in the
HTML file as '(-b +- sqrt(b^2 - 4ac))/(2a)', and display as nicely
formatted MathML. The script can be easily used in wikiservers and blogs,
as a rudimentary MathML editor (with instant preview), and to preview math
formulas as they are typed into a Web page input area.
Changes: In this release there are two bugfixes, some symbols have been
added, and there is also an example where ASCIIMathML is used for a
scientific calculator with live MathML output.

by Swaine Chen (http://freshmeat.net/users/slchen/)
Wed, Dec 29th 2004 16:13
Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics
Software Development :: Libraries :: Perl Modules
About: Genome-Tools provides flexible tools and a simple API for genomic
sequence processing on genomes published in the standard Genbank format.
A CGI-based Web interface is also available.
Changes: It is highly recommended that all installations upgrade to this
release. There is a new upgrade script to simplify the upgrade procedure,
which should work if there is a previously installed genome-tools.conf
file. This release fixes some parsing errors and processing errors which
resulted in possibly missing some intergenic sequence (although nothing
can be done about NCBI .ptt files specifying illogical situations), and
possibly not preprocessing some genome data files. It should also fix
parsing errors of the new .ptt file format NCBI started using December 19,
2004.

by Alexandre Dulaunoy (http://freshmeat.net/users/adulau/)
Wed, Dec 29th 2004 13:40
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: Object Brokering
About: MQS (Minimalist Queue Services) is a minimalist queueing system
that provides a set of basic methods in order to offer asynchronous
messaging for program/application. Applications can use this type of
services in order to store and retrieve messages to a dedicated queue in
the queue services. This allows you to avoid direct connection between
applications and provides a simple asynchronous communication system. It
provides a simple set of XML-RPC methods for pushing and getting messages
in a specific queue (so you can use the system with any application that
can talk XML-RPC). The queues are stored in a database (e.g., MySQL) or in
dedicated db files (e.g. QDBM).
Changes: Minor fixes to support Stunnel version 4. A sample/proof of
concept application that uses MQS has been added (to distribute packet
filter policies).

[048] - Plash 1.3
by mseaborn (http://freshmeat.net/users/mseaborn/)
Wed, Dec 29th 2004 15:12
Security
About: Plash (the Principle of Least Authority Shell) is a Unix shell that
lets you run Unix programs with access only to the files and directories
they need to run. In order to implement this, the filesystem is
virtualized. Each process can have its own namespace, which can contain a
subset of your files. Plash is implemented by modifying GNU libc and
replacing the system calls that use filenames. For example, open() is
changed so that it sends a message to a file server via a socket. If the
request is successful, the server sends the client a file descriptor.
Processes are run in a chroot jail under dynamically-allocated user IDs.
No kernel modifications are required. Existing Linux binaries work
unchanged.
Changes: Better security: now runs processes under dynamically-allocated
user IDs rather than the user "nobody". Globbing and file descriptor
redirection have been implemented in the shell. bind(), symlink(),
utime(), rename(), and link() have been implemented. A file descriptor
leak in the shell has been fixed.

methods are no longer being closed, as it is impossible to avoid races
completely otherwise, and a race means a crash. The keyboard mapping was

by Jordan Wilberding (http://freshmeat.net/users/diginux/)
Wed, Dec 29th 2004 11:41
System :: Systems Administration
Terminals :: Telnet
About: Secure Back Door (SBD) is a tool that provides ultra-secure and
minimal access to a computer, which allows you to run a single command
based on a one time key. It is good if you don't want to have an SSH
server running all the time, and only want to start it when needed.
Because it is written in only a few lines of code, it is hoped that it
will be less susceptible to security exploits than a program like SSH.
Changes: This release has switched over to a completely new protocol which
uses a one time pad, along with HMAC-SHA1, instead of just using OTP. The
old version is still in CVS, and will still be developed focusing on
finding a solution of transmitting commands securely with only OTP, but
for now SBD will be released with the new version of the protocol, since
it is based on more well-known cryptographic primitives.

Software Development :: Interpreters
About: Steel Bank Common Lisp is a development environment for Common
Lisp, with excellent support for the ANSI standard: garbage collection,
lexical closures, powerful macros, strong dynamic typing, incremental
compilation, and the famous Common Lisp Object System (multimethods and
all). It also includes many extensions, such as native threads, socket
support, a statistical profiler, programmable streams, and more. These are
all available through an integrated, interactive native compiler which
feels like an interpreter. SBCL is unique in being a multiplatform native
compiler which bootstraps itself completely from source, using a C
compiler and any other ANSI Common Lisp implementation.
Changes: References to foreign variables and functions can now be compiled
and loaded before the corresponding shared object file is loaded, as long
as the foreign definitions are available at runtime. Reloading changed
shared object files with LOAD-SHARED-OBJECT now causes the new definitions
to take effect. Solaris 10 (aka SunOS 5.10) on the SPARC platform is now
supported. Several bugs related to Unicode integration have been fixed.

It focuses on the correct use of C++ functions, and especially on the
correct use of error handling mechanisms.

the JPSpan library. An agenda is provided as an example to show how it
works. You can move next, move previous, move first, move last, update,
