Education
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics

About: Asymptote is a powerful script-based vector graphics language for
technical drawing, inspired by MetaPost but with an improved C++-like
syntax. It provides for figures the same high-quality level of typesetting
that LaTeX does for scientific text. It is a programming language as
opposed to just a graphics program, allowing it to exploit the best
features of script (command-driven) and graphical user interface (GUI)
methods. High-level graphics commands are implemented in the language
itself, allowing them to be easily tailored to specific applications.

Changes: The direction(path, real) and direction(path, int) routines were
renamed to dir(path, real) and dir(path, int) for consistency. Overwrite
mode is now a pen attribute instead of a global setting. An infinite loop
bug in overwrite mode was fixed. The RGB to CMYK routine was fixed and a
CMYK to RGB routine and -cmyk and -rgb command options were added. The
labelx and labely routines, which are now mentioned in the documentation,
were changed to position labels consistent with the axis routines.

Text Editors :: Emacs
Text Editors :: Word Processors
Text Processing :: Markup :: TeX/LaTeX

About: AUCTeX is a much-enhanced (La)TeX environment for Emacs and part of
the GNU project.

Changes: This is mainly a bugfix release for XEmacs, as well as
performance issues with font locking and filling, and other issues like
broken fontification of verbatim environments. Font locking can now be
customized to a great extent, and support for URLs, listings, jurabib, and
csquotes was added. The parser now understands additional common commands
like \DeclareRobustCommand. Two new sections were added to the manual:
"Quick Start" for beginners, and "Font Locking" describing syntax
highlighting in AUCTeX and its customization options.

[019] - Dabo 0.3
  by Ed Leafe (http://freshmeat.net/users/edleafe/)
  Wed, Jan 12th 2005 08:41

About: Dabo is a three-tier, cross-platform database application
development framework, written in Python with the wxPython GUI toolkit.
The controls in Dabo's UI are easily bound to data by setting two
properties. The business object is designed to afford you complete control
over the validation and handling of your data. The cursor classes are
abstracted from their backend implementations, allowing for easy support
of nearly any backend database. Dabo's design and approach has been
inspired by RAD database development tools such as Visual FoxPro, Delphi,
and Visual Basic.

Changes: This is the third pre-release of the Dabo framework. The changes
since 0.2 include support for PostgreSQL in addition to MySQL and
Firebird, the addition of an interactive Command Window to make debugging
and testing much easier, and a simplified interface to sizers and menus.

About: Dillo Web browser is a very fast, extremely small Web browser
that's completely written in C. The source and binary are less than 400
kilobytes each. It is a graphical browser built upon GTK+, and it renders
a good subset of HTML, excluding frames, JavaScript, and JVM support.

Changes: A very important memory leak involving pthreads' stacks was
fixed. This cuts virtual memory usage (VSZ) by a factor ranging from 2 to
20, depending on usage and the pthreads library implementation. The
generic parser was orthogonalized, which brings some important
enhancements and improvements. The algorithm for parsing character
entities was redesigned. Lots of minor improvements were made, and a
security bug was fixed. Users are encouraged to upgrade.

  by Chris Bratlien (http://freshmeat.net/users/chrisbratlien/)
  Wed, Jan 12th 2005 22:20

About: DropAFew is a multi-user calorie counting program for your Web
browser. It runs with XAMPP or any Apache+MySQL+PHP setup. The program
helps you maintain a consistent calorie deficit based on your preferences
for the rate of weight loss you want to achieve. Daily graphs and a
long-term trend chart help you study your progress. Once new food items
are keyed in, they are searchable for the next time you enter them.

Changes: Improvements were made for use on PDAs, mobile phones, or
text-mode browsers. This release added the ability to weigh-in and show
the history of weigh-ins. The Trend Chart was improved. The user
preferences now handle more time zones. It is now possible to roll back
logged in items to the night before with one click. Unnecessary SQL for
showing stats was removed. The PHP and HTML coding style and form
validation was improved. Several experimental features were added,
including a PDF report showing logged items, the ability to view weigh-in
plots on the Trend Chart, a more useful Splurge Worksheet, and a CSS
navbar/pull-down menus.

space and recreated as hard links to the remaining copy.

Changes: Version 1.1 had 2 braces too few and compared only the first
64-bits of equally sized files in normal mode, so the inverse mode was
correct. Version 1.21 and later versions do not have this bug, and are now
tested before release with coreutils-5.2.1 and others.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules

About: Kamaelia is a project that aims to allow the BBC and others to
create and test open protocols for large scale streaming. Substantial
subsystems include a core concurrency subsystem and the beginnings of an
RTSP/RTP streaming server. Existing functionality includes a complete
single threaded, coroutine-based concurrency framework (Axon), a generic

created, a number of example protocols, and an Ogg Vorbis decoding
subsystem for client site testing (libvorbissimple).

Changes: This is a port of the main Axon core concurrency subsystem in
Kamaelia to the Nokia series 60 python environment. Various key changes
were made to enable this. Specifically, the namespace was flattened,
python 2.3 features have been downgraded to python 2.2.2 features, the

[060] - OSSP shiela 1.1.5
  by Ralf S. Engelschall (http://freshmeat.net/users/rse/)
  Wed, Jan 12th 2005 13:59

System :: Logging

About: Shiela is an access control and logging facility for use with the
Concurrent Versions System (CVS). It is intended to be hooked into CVS's
processing through the $CVSROOT/CVSROOT/xxxinfo callbacks. This way Shiela
provides access control on a path and branch basis to particular repository
users and user groups. Additionally, repository operations are monitored,
accumulated, and logged. The lookout of logging messages can be configured
individually on a module path and branch basis and messages can be both
saved to files and/or delivered by email.

Changes: The build environment has been upgraded to GNU shtool 2.0.1.
Internal error handling and shiela-install.pod's description of the
"--loginfo" hook have been fixed. A buggy optimization in Perl versions

  by scox (http://freshmeat.net/users/scox/)
  Wed, Jan 12th 2005 06:29

Security
System :: Systems Administration

About: pam_usb is a PAM module that enables authentication using a USB
storage device through DSA private/public keys. It can also work with
floppy disks, CD-ROMs, or any kind of mountable device. It supports
multiple users for the same device, multiple hostnames for the same user,
a serial number access list, and private key encryption. It includes the
usbhotplug tool which by default will run xlock when you remove the USB
device and kill it as soon as the same device is plugged back in.

Changes: pam_usb will now also try to autodetect /dev/sdN devices (not
just /dev/sdNX). A bug that happened when the application using PAM didn't
set PAM_TTY correctly was fixed. The use_first_pass and try_first_pass
options were added. If you enter your password on another PAM module (such
as pam_mount or pam_ssh), pam_usb will now use that password to decrypt the
private key.

  Wed, Jan 12th 2005 04:51

Internet :: Log Analysis
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration

About: pmacct is a small set of IP accounting and aggregation tools.
Aggregation of IP traffic revolves around the concept of primitives (VLAN
id, source and destination MAC addresses, IP addresses, networks, AS,
ports, and IP protocol are supported) that may be employed alone or
arbitrarily combined with others to form complex aggregation methods. It
supports custom historical breakdown, packet sampling, filtering and
tagging, recovery actions, and triggers. Both libpcap (and promiscuous
mode if required) and NetFlow are supported.

Changes: IPv6 accounting and aggregation were introduced; all filtering,
taggingm and mapping functions are now IPv6- enabled. Support for the
Cisco NetFlow v9 exporting protocol was introduced. Pre Tagging was
added, making it possible to assign small integer IDs to flows, which can
 apply tags based on engine type and engine ID. Additional checks for
endianness, CPU type, and MMU unaligned access capability were
introduced. Additional checks for PPPoE and VLAN routines were added
along with bugfixes.

Internet

About: Sendmail is a Mail Transfer Agent, which is the program that moves
mail from one machine to another. Sendmail implements a general
internetwork mail routing facility, featuring aliasing and forwarding,
automatic routing to network gateways, and flexible configuration.

Changes: This release contains fixes for a regression that was introduced
in 8.13.2. It now keeps proper track of closed connections and will not
reuse them erroneously. Before these bugfixes, more email could be
delivered to a domain despite errors. In some cases, the old behavior is
preferred because it more "aggressively" delivers mail, but the new one is
"correct" with respect to standards. On systems with large queues for
single domains, this may cause a noticeable change in behavior if the MTAs
of the recipient domain close connections with a persistent error, e.g.
421.

[085] - subPersistence 0.8.4
  by Maik Schreiber (http://freshmeat.net/users/blizzy/)
  Wed, Jan 12th 2005 04:52

Database

About: subPersistence is an abstract, light-weight, yet flexible framework
for working with O/R persistence mappers. It provides for independence of a
specific O/R mapper such as Hibernate or Castor. While you can use
Hibernate or Castor (or other O/R mappers) directly, coupling your
application too tightly to those can be a bad thing. subPersistence makes
it easy to switch underlying O/R mappers, thereby decoupling the
application layer from those. It abstracts away differences between the
mappers, while still making it possible to use their specific features if

[088] - TinyWM 1.1
  by Nick Welch (http://freshmeat.net/users/mackstann/)
  Wed, Jan 12th 2005 04:48

Desktop Environment :: Window Managers

About: TinyWM is a ridiculously tiny window manager implemented in nearly
as few lines of C as possible, without being obfuscated or entirely
useless. It allows you to move, resize, focus (sloppy), and raise
windows.

Changes: Windows resized to less than 1 pixel on either axis now refuse
to shrink any further instead of causing a fatal X error or becoming
gigantic. XStringToKeysym is now used to get the keysym of F1 instead of
the XK_F1 constant, removing the need to include X11/keysym.h.

System :: Operating System

About: uClibc (µClibc) is a C library for developing embedded Linux
systems. It is much smaller then the GNU C Library, but nearly all
applications supported by glibc also work perfectly with uClibc. Porting
applications from glibc to uClibc typically involves just recompiling the
source code. uClibc even supports shared libraries and threading. It
currently runs on standard Linux and MMU-less Linux (also known as
µClinux) systems with support for ARM, i386, h8300, m68k, MIPS, mipsel,
PowerPC, SH, SPARC, and v850 processors.

Changes: These release added a new stdio core, Linux 2.6.x support, a
much improved shared library loader, support for several new
architectures, and many bugfixes.

Database :: Front-Ends
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes
Software Development :: Widget Sets

About: xulRecordset is a project to create XUL widget library with a
recordset behaviour, like ADORecordset in Visual Basic. It uses PHP
server-side and derived XUL widgets (using XBL) and Javascript
client-side. Communication between the client and server is supported by
the JPSpan library. An agenda is provided as an example to show how it
works. You can move next, move previous, move first, move last, update,
remove, add records, etc. The example runs against a MySQL database.

Changes: Performance was optimized by checking if widgets' values have
changed in the update method. The "sourceParam" attribute was added to the
tree widget. The "simpleAdd" method was added to the xulRecordset widget.
