About: abracadabra is a generic image processing program. It generates
animated GIFs, morphs GIF animations, and computes single morphing steps.
It also extracts features from a bunch of pictures to feed into the ghSOM
(a neural net). It also can preprocess those images with filters that are
either freely definable or have fixed implementations.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Capture/Recording
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio
About: The Advanced Linux Sound Architecture is composed of several parts.
The first is a fully modularized sound driver which supports module
autoloading, devfs, isapnp autoconfiguration, and gives complete access to
analog audio, digital audio, control, mixer, synthesizer, DSP, MIDI, and
timer components of audio hardware. It also includes a fully-featured
kernel-level sequencer, a full compatibility layer for OSS/Free
applications, an object-oriented C library which covers and enhances the
ALSA kernel driver functionality for applications (client/server, plugins,
PCM sharing/multiplexing, PCM metering, etc.), an interactive configuration
program for the driver, and some simple utilities for basic management.

by Stefan Hornburg (http://freshmeat.net/users/stefanhornburg/)
Thu, Jan 13th 2005 03:57
Communications :: Email :: Filters
About: AMaViS-ng is a modular rewrite of amavisd and amavis-perl. It scans
email for malicious code inside attachments and archive files, stopping
delivery if malicious code is found. It supports integration of several
third-party virus scanners and integrates nicely into several MTA setups.
Unlike amavis-perl and amavisd, there is no need for build-time
configuration.
Changes: The commented extractor line in example configuration file was
fixed. Logging and output fixes were implemented for the Panda scanner.
The unpack directory is now immediately recorded to avoid stale files.

by Gerbier Eric (http://freshmeat.net/users/gerbier/)
Thu, Jan 13th 2005 07:28
Security
System :: Systems Administration
About: afick is another file integrity checker, designed to be fast and
fully portable between Unix and Windows platforms. It works by first
creating a database that represents a snapshot of the most essential parts
of your computer system. You can then run the script to discover all
modifications made since the snapshot was taken (i.e. files added,
changed, or removed). The configuration syntax is very close to that of
aide or tripwire, and a graphical interface is provided.
Changes: Afick can now work on a read-only database (on a CDROM, for
example) in compare mode for better security. A bug was fixed in the
afickonfig program.

by mean99 (http://freshmeat.net/users/mean99/)
Thu, Jan 13th 2005 04:16
Multimedia :: Video :: Non-Linear Editor
About: Avidemux is a graphical tool to edit video. It can open AVI,
openDML, MPEG, Nuppelvideo, and BMPs. Most common codecs are supported
(M-JPEG, MPEG, DivX, Xvid, huffyuv, WMA, etc.) thanks to libavcodec and
libmpeg2. Video can be edited, cut, appended, filtered
(resize/crop/denoise), and re-encoded to either AVI (DivX/Xvid) or MPEG
1/2.
Changes: This releases added improved rate control for lavcodec MPEG1/2
encoding. It also included a better UI for cropping and a new filter for
stretching luma on VHS capture. A couple of PTS/DTS issues were also
fixed.

Thu, Jan 13th 2005 04:24
About: Backup Manager is a small and basic tool for generating archives.
It is designed for those who don't want an obfuscated tool for making
tarballs. It can make tar, tar.gz, tar.bz, and zip archives. It can be run
in a parallel mode with different configuration files. Archives are kept
for a given number of days. Its upload system can use ftp or scp to
transfer the generated archives to a list of remote hosts. The
configuration file is very simple and basic.
Changes: This release included full Spanish, German, and French
translations. Some minor changes were made to the installation process.

[009] - bash programmable completion 20050112 (Stable)
by Ian Macdonald (http://freshmeat.net/users/ianmacd/)
Thu, Jan 13th 2005 04:04
System :: Shells
System :: Systems Administration
Utilities
About: Since v2.04, bash has allowed you to intelligently program and
extend its standard completion behavior to achieve complex command lines
with just a few keystrokes. Imagine typing ssh [Tab] and being able to
complete on hosts from your ~/.ssh/known_hosts files. Or typing man 3 str
[Tab] and getting a list of all string handling functions in the UNIX
manual. mount system: [Tab] would complete on all exported file-systems
from the host called system, while make [Tab] would complete on all
targets in Makefile. This project was conceived to produce programmable
completion routines for the most common Linux/UNIX commands, reducing the
amount of typing sysadmins and programmers need to do on a daily basis.
Changes: Completion now works for chown/chgrp when group names contain
spaces. Improvements were made to wireless tools completion. The location
of openssl.cnf is now somewhat more flexible for OpenSSL completion.

Thu, Jan 13th 2005 21:44
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Networking
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux
About: The Beowulf Distributed Process Space (BProc) is set of kernel
modifications, utilities, and libraries which allow a user to start
processes on other machines in a Beowulf-style cluster. Remote processes
started with this mechanism appear in the process table of the front end
machine in a cluster. This allows remote process management using the
normal UNIX process control facilities. Signals are transparently
forwarded to remote processes and exit status is received using the usual
wait () mechanisms.

[011] - binmay 0.3
by Sean Loaring (http://freshmeat.net/users/clodomatic/)
Thu, Jan 13th 2005 04:03
About: Binmay is a command line binary search and replace program. It
allows one to specify a binary string (in hex) to search for and,
optionally, a binary string to replace it with. One can mask both search
and replace strings as one can mask an IP. It is handy for changing
broken user SID/RIDs in ntuser.dat files after you move a profile from
somewhere to somewhere else.
Changes: A -b switch was added, which allows binary input instead of hex.

[015] - cb2Bib 0.3.3
by constans (http://freshmeat.net/users/constans/)
Thu, Jan 13th 2005 21:24
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors
Scientific/Engineering
Text Processing :: Markup :: TeX/LaTeX
About: cb2Bib is a tool for rapidly extracting unformatted bibliographic
references from email alerts, journal Web pages, or PDF files. It
facilitates the capture of single references from unformatted sources.
References are written in BibTeX. A PDF file with the article text, if
available, can be easily linked and renamed by dragging it onto the
cb2Bib window. Reference manager applications can later retrieve,
import, and display these BibTeX references.
Changes: The copy/move/open for local and network files was rearranged.
This introduced the possibility of very simple network queries, of the
form 'journal-volume-first page'. Queries are performed as simple HTML
posts to user specified sites. Upon successful query termination, the
missing reference fields are updated and the PDF article is optionally
imported.

Thu, Jan 13th 2005 21:29
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes
About: Cgiapp.class.php is a port of CGI::Application to PHP. It utilizes
Smarty as its default templating engine, much as CGI::Application uses
HTML::Template, due to its prevalence and acceptance in the PHP community.
Due to PHP's built-in session support, it also adds two methods, s_param()
and s_delete(), to handle session parameters. A number of static methods
have also been included to facilitate error handling and array/hash
conversion.
Changes: Run mode is now explicitly retrieved from $_GET/$_POST arrays.
The mode parameter is now checked against the Cgiapp reserved method list
and PHP internal function list. If it matches either, the mode parameter
is retrieved via $_GET/$_POST. Error handling is now restored using
restore_error_handler().

by Matthew Jimenez (http://freshmeat.net/users/mjimenez/)
Thu, Jan 13th 2005 04:02
Software Development :: Version Control
About: CommitMessage is a modular, easy-to-use approach to CVS and SVN
commit emails. It consists of a controller for each supported system
(currently CVS and SVN), which populates a generic model with the entire
commit, and then passes the model to the configured views. The views are
written as Python classes, and are configured in the configuration file.
Changes: This release implemented a new summaryThreshold feature
(Subversion only) for not parsing diffs for large commits and a work
around for a Subversion bug on Windows that would cause commitmessage to
hang.

About: ctrlproxy is an IRC server with multiserver support. It runs as a
daemon and connects to a number of IRC servers, then allows you to connect
from a workstation and work as the user that is logged in to the IRC
server. After you disconnect, it maintains the connection to the server.
It acts like any normal IRC server, so you can use any IRC client to
connect to it. It supports multiple client connections to one IRC server
(under the same nick), allowing you to connect to IRC using your IRC nick,
even while you have an IRC session open somewhere else. It supports logging
(in any user-specified format), password authentication, and CTCP (in case
no clients are connected). IRC servers can be contacted over IPv6 and/or
using SSL. Automatic identification with NickServ is supported, as well as
various types of backlog.

About: The Framewerk engine is a PHP5-based object oriented site
development platform. It is intended to be both fast and extendable. It is
the culmination of years of site development and is designed to be a solid
foundation for everything from Web sites that require content management
to sites that run large communities. It is a scalable engine designed to
make developing Web sites and Web content easy.
Changes: This version featured major structural changes in the removal of
Modules and the change to Interface objects. PHP5's __autoload
functionality is now used to include Interface objects on the fly, and
using a mapping feature, URL parsing was made more secure and easy to
manage. The system updater now has fully recursive dependency checking and
the Article/Blog system and a base level comment object collection were
included.

Database :: Database Engines/Servers
Database :: Front-Ends
About: hsqldb is a relational database engine written in Java with a JDBC
driver that supports a subset of ANSI SQL3. It offers a small (about
100k), fast database engine. Embedded and server modes are available. It
includes tools such as a minimal Web server, in-memory query and
management tools (which can be run as applets or servlets, too), a test
framework, PHP compatibility, Eclipse and NetBeans IDE compatibility, and
a number of demonstration examples.
Changes: Code needed for embedding into OpenOffice.org was added. A
rewritten implementation of Cache is included. Reuse of file space when
rows are deleted was improved. This is aimed primarily at JBoss usage,
which involves a million or more insert/delete/update operations per day
and results in much smaller .data files over time. Performance has been
improved in certain areas, such as recovery after an abnormal termination.
Enhancements were made to DatabaseManagerSwing.

by Manuel Lemos (http://freshmeat.net/users/mlemos/)
Thu, Jan 13th 2005 04:26
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes
About: HTML Forms generation and validation is a PHP class that generates
HTML forms supporting keyboard navigation, has many built-in validation
types on server and client sides, prevents security attacks by discarding
spoofed values, has multiple submit protection, outputs HTML for fields
displayed as fully accessible or in read-only mode, has field value
filtering based on regular expressions, and has automatic capitalization
of field text. It can be extended with custom input control plug-in
classes. Calendar date and CAPTCHA plug-in controls are available. The
form output can be defined with templates using HTML with embedded PHP or
the Smarty template engine.
Changes: A plug-in class that implements CAPTCHA validation tests was
added to make it difficult for robot programs to access site resources.
Support for handling client side form input events by executing actions on
the server side was added to provide a means for implementing custom form
inputs that provide high level user interaction without having to submit
the form or refresh the whole form page.

[062] - N-View 3.0 Beta 1 (Stable)
by Wolfgang Ullrich (http://freshmeat.net/users/ullrich/)
Thu, Jan 13th 2005 04:06
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
About: N-View is a network monitor for small and medium-sized networks. It
features automatic scanning of subnets for host addresses, monitoring of
ICMP responses from all hosts, signalling of timeouts and delays in the
GUI and by mail, a portscanner, an SNMP client (MIB browser and trap
receiver), a graphical display of network traffic for network interfaces,
connectivity to hosts by telnet, HTTP browser, or an arbitrary external
program (such as ssh), printing of network diagrams, automatic generation
of HTML pages, and more.
Changes: This beta release featured a major code-cleanup and new JNI
libraries for sending and receiving ICMP packets. These are currently
available for Windows, Linux, and Solaris on x86 systems. The source code
for the libraries for other system architectures is also included. Some
feature enhancements and GUI improvements were also made.

Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)
Communications :: Email :: Filters
About: Nail is a mail user agent derived from Berkeley Mail. It provides
the functionality of the System V and POSIX mailx commands. Additional
features include support for MIME, IMAP (including caching and
disconnected use), POP3, SMTP, S/MIME, international character sets,
maildir folders, message threading, powerful search methods, scoring, and
a Bayesian junk mail filter. Nail can be used as a mail batch language in
nearly the same way as it is used interactively. It can thus act as a
mailbox filter, can fetch mail from remote accounts, and can send files as
attachments.
Changes: It is now possible to forward messages as attachments. The
handling of character sets when sending messages has been revised;
multiple character sets can be specified, with the appropriate one being
automatically selected, and replies can use the same character set as the
original message. Some bugfixes in that area were also made.

Communications :: Usenet News
About: ngetdaemon allows quick and efficient perusing and downloading from
Usenet remotely. Updating and sorting of all headers is done with one
click. The strongest feature is that posts are grouped together in 'file
groups', meaning a post consisting of 100 files is compacted into one line
and determined to be complete, incomplete, par fills, etc. There are no
pretty buttons, animations, etc. Everything is designed to create as
little strain on bandwidth as possible.
Changes: All text has been moved into 'language packs'. Currently the only
one is English, but hopefully that will change soon. Form buttons were
recoded to be more intelligent, and there are some minor fixes.

[069] - OSSP svs 1.0.1
by Ralf S. Engelschall (http://freshmeat.net/users/rse/)
Thu, Jan 13th 2005 04:41
Software Development :: Build Tools
About: OSSP svs is a simple frontend to diff(1) and patch(1). It provides
a convenient way for working with changes on textual files if no history
tracking and version control is necessary. This is especially the case
when having to patch pristine vendor sources for portability or bugfixing
reasons.
Changes: A convenient "svs status" command that outputs a "cvs
update"-style list of files and their status (modification or conflict)
was added. *.rej files are now removed during a "svs vi" if a modification
was made. The "make uninstall" procedure of the build environment was
fixed. When editing a file, svs now looks for a corresponding ".rej" file.
If one is found and the editor is Vim, both files are opened. When
searching for "*.orig" files, the resulting filename list is now sorted to
make sure that patches are deterministically re-produced.

by Ralf S. Engelschall (http://freshmeat.net/users/rse/)
Thu, Jan 13th 2005 04:33
Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Operating System
About: OSSP uuid is an ISO-C and Perl API and corresponding CLI for the
generation of DCE 1.1 and ISO/IEC 11578:1996 compliant Universally Unique
Identifiers (UUIDs). It supports DCE 1.1 variant UUIDs of version 1 (time
and node based), version 3 (name based), and version 4 (random number
based). UUIDs are 128 bit numbers which are intended to have a high
likelihood of uniqueness over space and time and are computationally
difficult to guess. They are globally unique identifiers which can be
locally generated without contacting a global registration authority.
Changes: Generation of v3 UUIDs was fixed by adding support for 64-bit
platforms to the underlying uuid_md5.c code. Run-time of the internal
md5_store() function was optimized. The build environment no longer
rebuilds the Perl API if there were no actual changes.

Thu, Jan 13th 2005 07:36
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
About: Linda is a widely studied distributed computing environment,
centered around the notion of a tuple space. A tuple space is a bag (also
called a multi-set) of tuples. A tuple is an ordered, typed chunk of data.
Tuple spaces exist independently of processes in the system, and the data
placed into a tuple space also exist independently. PyLinda is a simple
implementation of a Linda system, but it also includes several of the more
recently proposed extensions to Linda in the form of multiple tuple spaces,
garbage collection, sane non-blocking primitives and bulk tuple operations.
Changes: SysV shared memory was removed, and Unix Domain Sockets were made
the default, as they are quicker. A new flashy Web site was created. A bug
where some sockets caused an exception because they were not in blocking
mode was fixed. A bug where Windows didn't define MSG_DONTWAIT in the
socket module was fixed. A bug that prevented a network of servers from
being formed was fixed.

Text Processing :: Markup :: HTML/XHTML
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML
About: Serving XML provides a pipeline language for declaratively
adapting content to XML, transforming it through a chain of XSLT
stylesheets and SAX filters, and producing a stream of output to a local
or remote destination. The accompanying console app supports reading
content as XML files, flat files, SQL queries, or SAX events, and writing
it as XML, HTML, PDF, or mail attachments. This software is especially
suitable for converting flat files to XML, with its support for variant
record types, multi-valued fields, namespaces, hierarchical grouping of
records, row-by-row validation with XML Schema, and much more. There is
also an API for embedding the software in a Java application.
Changes: This version made it easier to use the framework as an "inversion

record and XML processing. Additional elements were added to support
directory readers, remote file IO, dynamically generated SAX source
events, and custom JDBC connection pools.

Communications
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Software Development :: Build Tools
About: XINS is a technology used to define, create, and invoke remote
APIs. XINS is specification-oriented. When API specifications are written
(in XML), XINS will transform them to HTML-based documentation and Java
code for both the client-side and the server-side. The communication is
based on HTTP. XINS competes with the complex SOAP technology. Main design
goals include simplicity, scalability, and testability. XINS is not only a
specification technology, but also an application development framework.
It offers transaction logging, unique log documentation, and active code
generation.
Changes: Various bugs have been fixed. The French translations for the log
messages are finished. Performance tests for the framework have been added.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Capture/Recording
About: xmcd2make is a set of Perl scripts which support users of the
gramofile recording, track splitting, and signal processing package. It
consists of 3 userland tools: findtracks.pl (a command line interface to
gramofile track detection), signalproc.pl (a command line interface to
gramofile track splitting and signal processing), and xmcd2make.pl (a
script that takes an xmcd file of song names and track timing files and
creates a makefile). When the makefile is run, it splits the tracks,
performs gramofile signal processing, and encodes the resulting tracks to
Ogg Vorbis format with the correct song names and good tags.
Changes: The scripts now uses Audio::Gramodile and libgramofile. All
dependencies on gramofile and swig were removed. A new xmcdsearch script
was added for automatically searching freedb.org and downloading xmcd
files.
