Integrating Agile Development In The Real World
by Dean Margerison (http://www.dekam.net/)
Section: Book Reviews
Sat, Feb 12th 2005 00:00
I have been interested in practical software process improvement
initiatives for a number of years now, and I stress the word practical.
The world of theory is fine, but what most people want is help and advice
based in the real world, the world where companies, projects, teams,
people, and processes are not perfect.

About: Aeromys is an application that provides extremely fast access to
email through the Web. It accomplishes this by using predictive caching,
which means that information is retrieved from the mail server before it
is requested by the user. It is designed to be highly scalable, vastly
configurable, and extremely fast. The default front-end is written in PHP,
and the back-end engine is written in C.
Changes: webmaild was rewritten to be multi-threaded. A new default theme

Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
About: Asynchronous remote-script callback invocation (a.k.a. remote
scripting) is a technique by which ECMAScript code in a browser can
connect to a server without reloading a page. Remote callback invocation
allows you to create pages with sophisticated, dynamic features. ARSCIF is
a powerful framework that makes it trivial to use this technique. It helps
the developer by working out problems such as data and character encoding,
concurrency control, browser implementations, and so on.
Changes: The documentation has been updated and made clearer. The embedded
code documentation has been regenerated.

[013] - Electric Fence 2.4.13
by Hayati Ayguen (http://freshmeat.net/users/hayguen/)
Sat, Feb 12th 2005 22:20
Software Development :: Debuggers
About: Electric Fence (efence) stops your program on the exact instruction
that overruns (or underruns) a malloc() memory buffer. GDB will then
display the source-code line that causes the bug. It works by using the
virtual-memory hardware to create a red-zone at the border of each buffer
- touch that, and your program stops. Catch all of those formerly
impossible-to-catch overrun bugs that have been bothering you for years.
Changes: This release reworks and revises all internal functions. It adds
an EF_OLD_NEW_MACRO preprocessor flag to keep compatibility to old
NEW_ELEM() / NEW_ARRAY() macros. Freeing already freed memory is now
detected. It stores __FILE__ and __LINE__ of free() to be able to print
the position of first free. This version fixes a bug that occurred when
calling eftest with a higher number e.g. 10000. There were bugfixes to
memalign() which was not exported. Macros and functions are now also
defined for valloc().

Database :: Front-Ends
Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: User Interfaces
About: ERW (Entities and Relationships on the Web) is an innovative system
for handling complex databases using a Web browser. It uses the most recent
standards endorsed by the W3C to offer to the user a sophisticated
environment, similar to a dedicated client. Moreover, the user interface
is generated in a completely automatic way starting from a conceptual
description of the database by means of an XML-based description language
for entity-relationship schemata. From the same description, you can also
automatically obtain diagrams and documentation. ERW can be used for
content management, in particular when the data is structured along
complex relations.
Changes: This release adds a number of minor bugfixes. It now accepts
Opera 8+, as it implements enough of the DOM to work with ERW.

About: JOELib/JOELib2 is a cheminformatics library which supports SMARTS
substructure search, descriptor calculation, processing/filtering pipes,
and conversion of different chemical file formats. It is written in 100%
pure Java, and interfaces to external programs (e.g. Ghemical) are
available.
Changes: This release consolidates the caller pipe for the protonation
model, which caused problems for the SMARTS matching and the SDF export.
The problems were caused by deleting hydrogen atoms during SMARTS matching
or SDF export.
