[002] - Arkeia Network Backup 5.3
by Arkeia Software Corp (http://freshmeat.net/users/arkeia/)
Tue, Mar 1st 2005 08:27
System :: Archiving :: Backup
About: Arkeia Network Backup is the solution for automated
backup/archiving and restoration on Linux, UNIX, and Windows NT networks.
It utilizes an exclusive multi-flow technology to deliver speeds that are
200 to 300% faster than rival software packages. Its unique transaction
engine allows multiple backups and restores to be performed simultaneously
with total reliability. This is especially valuable for multiple users
backing up or restoring data on their own. (A multiple drive library is
required).
Changes: New features include Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Services (VSS)
support for MS-Windows 2003 servers snapshot backup, support for Linux
Kernel 2.6, optional NDMP network-attached storage (NAS) support, and a
new Blowfish algorithm that supports up to 448-bit encryption. Backup
speeds were accelerated. 64-bit Linux support was increased with packages
for Intel Itanium-2 and AMD Opteron. Platform support was expanded to
include Debian packages compatible with the apt-get system. Enhancements
were made to tape verification and index rebuilding. The command line
interface was extended. Flexibility was added to the graphical user
interface.

Tue, Mar 1st 2005 09:27
System :: Archiving :: Backup
About: Bacula is a set of programs that allow you to manage the backup,
recovery, and verification of computer data across a network of different
computers. It is based on a client/server architecture and is efficient
and relatively easy to use, while offering many advanced storage
management features that make it easy to find and recover lost or damaged
files.
Changes: All fixes for bugs since version 1.36.1 were applied. New
directives from 1.37 code were added. Tim's patch for ACLs was applied.
Eight new option keywords were added in a FileSet resource: ignorecase,
fstype, hfsplussupport, wilddir, wildfile, regexdir, regexfile, and
hardlinks. A deadlock in multiple simultaneous jobs was fixed. The bug
with tape "truncation"/"number of files" after restore was fixed.
ClientRun jobs on Win32 were fixed to fail if the return code is not zero.

[009] - core restart 1.1
by Asim Shankar (http://freshmeat.net/users/asimshankar/)
Tue, Mar 1st 2005 14:38
About: core restart is a user-level process checkpointing and restarting
system for processes in Linux. It differs from some existing
implementations in that it does not require the executables to be linked
with a library, so processes can be checkpointed without being changed.
The mechanism of restoring the stack and register state of the
checkpointed process is simplified by the fact that the restarted process
and the restoration code are in independent address spaces. The system
runs only on user-level code and requires no modifications to the kernel.
Changes: The "Could not read name of note #1" bug that seemed to appear
quite often has been fixed.

by EC (http://freshmeat.net/users/coquelle/)
Tue, Mar 1st 2005 09:22
Desktop Environment :: K Desktop Environment (KDE)
Utilities
About: kArchiver is a KDE utility made to ease working with compressed
files. With kArchiver, you can create tar.gz, tar.bz2, .zip, and other
files, and you can add, remove, or view one or more files with a
multiselection window. Its interface merges with konqueror, allowing you
to view and extract all of your archives within the file manager.
Right-clicking on an archive allows you to extract archives in background.
You can also convert files between .tar.gz and .tar.bz2. It also provides
an automatic splitter/unsplitter to fit a file onto a set of floppies, and
wizards that will help you step by step to compile and install software
through kArchiver's interface. It can act as a command line tool, useful
for creating and extracting archives without taking care of the
compressor's name and its options.
Changes: Many bugs have been fixed, mostly dealing with the dir-by-dir
navigation of ZIP archives. The support for password protected archives
has been enhanced, and should work with rar archives with encrypted
filenames. The focus has also been set on usability: the creation of new
archives should be easier, as well as the file adding with the file
browser (which now supports drag and drop).

Security :: Cryptography
About: OpenSkat is an cryptographically secure implementation of the

About: rwdshell uses the RubyWebDialogs GUI to run shell commands in a Web
browser. It uses the rwdtinker framework for removal and installation of
applets. You have a Ruby eval screen, a shell command line, and a shell
script runner. You can edit scripts and run Ruby scripts.
Changes: The code, GUI, and lang loading were refactored to eliminate
intermediate files. The script for running scripts was fixed so that
scripts can be located in a different directory. The first unofficial
Debian package was released.

[065] - SDL.NET 3.0.0
by jendave (http://freshmeat.net/users/jendave/)
Tue, Mar 1st 2005 00:08
Games/Entertainment
Multimedia :: Graphics
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
About: SDL.NET is a set of object-oriented CLS-compliant .NET bindings for
the SDL gaming library. It provides high-level access to audio, keyboard,
mouse, joystick, TrueType fonts, various image formats, sound mixing,
MPEG-1 movies, and 3D hardware via OpenGL and a 2D video framebuffer. It
is compatible with both .NET and Mono runtimes.
Changes: The mixer system and event system were completely revamped. Each
channel is now an object and can be manipulated easily, and the event
queue can be totally controlled. There are now methods for adding new
events, viewing events, and removing events directly from the queue. The
video subsystem now returns much better information on the available modes
and the features available in the current mode and hardware. A massive,
impressive demo by Moonfire called MfGames.Sdl.Demos was added. It shows
off complex Sprite animation and Gui interaction.

[066] - SecureServ 1.3
by Justin (http://freshmeat.net/users/fishwaldo/)
Tue, Mar 1st 2005 07:59
Communications :: Chat :: Internet Relay Chat
Security
About: SecureServ is an IRC trojan detector. It's much like a virus
scanner, but aimed at IRC networks. Using several methods, including
version checks, behavior analysis, and general pattern matching, it aims
to detect trojans, viruses, and floodbots which connect to your IRC
network. Its "brains" are based on a "Definition file" which contains
information on how to detect trojans. To update detection for new trojans,
you only have to download a new file.
Changes: This version fixes errors with the MonBots acting correctly with
recieved messages, leaving channels when they are empty, the ability for
IRCops to specify the modes that a MonBot uses, and a KILL action for some
signatures.

[067] - Serving XML 0.1.8
by Daniel Parker (http://freshmeat.net/users/danielaparker/)
Tue, Mar 1st 2005 07:29
Database
Text Processing :: Markup :: HTML/XHTML
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML
About: Serving XML provides a pipeline language for declaratively
adapting content to XML, transforming it through a chain of XSLT
stylesheets and SAX filters, and producing a stream of output to a local
or remote destination. The accompanying console app supports reading
content as XML files, flat files, SQL queries, or SAX events, and writing
it as XML, HTML, PDF, or mail attachments. This software is especially
suitable for converting flat files to XML, with its support for variant
record types, multi-valued fields, namespaces, hierarchical grouping of
records, row-by-row validation with XML Schema, and much more. There is
also an API for embedding the software in a Java application.
Changes: This release contains substantial enhancements for XML to flat
file conversion. It includes support for mapping multiple occurrences of
an element to fields.

[068] - SFSU Penaltybox 0.4.5
by Ben Wilder (http://freshmeat.net/users/mrcawfee/)
Tue, Mar 1st 2005 14:10
System :: Networking
About: The SFSU Penaltybox is a solution for high network traffic in
residence halls. It implements a bandwidth quota, penalizing the users
who cause most of the network congestion. When users go over their
bandwidth quota in a time period their traffic is limited using a
Packeteer PacketShaper for a certain period of time before they are let
out of the penalty box.
Changes: hash_map compilation problems with certain versions of gcc have
been fixed.

[069] - Simplebackup 1.5.1 (Stable)
by Miguel Angelo (http://freshmeat.net/users/miguelangelo/)
Tue, Mar 1st 2005 03:55
System :: Archiving :: Backup
About: Simplebackup is a cross-platform backup program. It reads a
configuration file, then it builds a compressed file for each of your
backup directories or files on your backup list, and places the compressed
files into another location. For example, this location can be a network
mapped drive in Windows, an NFS mounted drive in Unix, another hard disk,
an FTP server, or a tape device (Unix only). This will duplicate your
information, doing the so called "backup".
Changes: A non-critical bug that could cause Perl to dump warnings if it
was unable to get the file modification time during incremental and
differential backups was fixed. If hostname_on_backup_files is used with
the auto-configuration options, the hostname is now added into the
auxiliary files (log file, management file, history file). Log messages
and the documentation were improved.

[070] - Source Address Hardware Translator 0.7
by Michael-Jordan Hrycaj (http://freshmeat.net/users/mjhrycaj/)
Tue, Mar 1st 2005 08:14
About: The purpose of SHAT (Source Address Hardware Translator) is to
support wireless clients regardless of the configuration of their IP
stack. The current approach lives in userland. The idea is to filter and
forward data between an Ethernet interface and a TUN interface. TCP/IP
port scanning between wireless clients can be prevented to some extrend by
attracting all traffic using similar mechanisms as implemented with SHAT.

[072] - Steel Bank Common Lisp 0.8.20
by Brian Mastenbrook (http://freshmeat.net/users/darmokcl/)
Tue, Mar 1st 2005 08:03
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Debuggers
Software Development :: Interpreters
About: Steel Bank Common Lisp is a development environment for Common
Lisp, with excellent support for the ANSI standard: garbage collection,
lexical closures, powerful macros, strong dynamic typing, incremental
compilation, and the famous Common Lisp Object System (multimethods and
all). It also includes many extensions, such as native threads, socket
support, a statistical profiler, programmable streams, and more. These are
all available through an integrated, interactive native compiler which
feels like an interpreter. SBCL is unique in being a multiplatform native
compiler which bootstraps itself completely from source, using a C
compiler and any other ANSI Common Lisp implementation.
Changes: Redundant type checks have been removed from code with many calls
to CLOS methods specialized on CLOS classes, resulting in a significant
speed improvement for object-oriented code. Several bugs relating to
Unicode support have been fixed, and several string operations have been
optimized. Many bugs in the AMD64 backend have been removed.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Perl Modules
Software Development :: Version Control
About: svk is a decentralized version control system. While Subversion
(svn) aims to take over the CVS user base, svk attempts to take over the
user base of the other version control systems, including people who have
already switched to another version control system, as well as people who
have not yet started using a version control system. It is written in Perl
and uses Subversion's underlying filesystem.
Changes: This release fixes an important bug where local modification
would not be seen by svk after update or merge without clearing the cache.
It also highlights proper pathname and commit message translation from/to
your native encoding. You should notice significant start-up time
improvement with the adoption of Class::Autouse.

Tue, Mar 1st 2005 09:05
Communications :: Email :: Filters
About: t-prot (TOFU Protection) is a filter which improves the readability
of email messages and Usenet posts by hiding some of their annoying parts.
The annoyances it handles include mailing list footers, signatures, TOFU,
sequences of blank lines, and repeated punctuation. TOFU is an acronym
that stands for "Text oben, Fullquote unten", a German reference to the
practice of adding just a few lines of original text and quoting a
complete message below them.

Tue, Mar 1st 2005 09:24
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
System :: Networking
About: UPNPLib is a Java library for the UPNP protocol. It features an
easy programming interface for developers as well as an HTTP-based console
for end users or developers, so that they can control the UPNP devices
residing on their network. It implements all UPNP features like discovery

(by exposing UPNP devices as MBeans) and RMI through transparent
NAT/firewall traversal.
Changes: This release contains some workarounds to support non-compliant
UPNP devices. One minor library bug was fixed. This should greatly improve
UPNP device compatibility. The InternetGatewayDevice class has been also
modified to support the WANPPPConnection service, and some new methods
were added to retreive the NAT table size on the IGD device.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
About: XDBCMS is a Web-based, multi-user CMS that can manage any number of
Web sites, each site with any number of pages, and each site organised in a
tree-based menu that can be any depth. Where XDBCMS differs from most
content management systems is that it actually generates a stand-alone Web
site, which requires no database to drive it, can be 'released' to any Web
server, and would be able to cope with very large numbers of users. For
the authors, it features a WYSIWYG editor, similar to MS-Word in
appearance, allowing full control over the format (tables, fonts,
graphics, etc.) of each individual page. It allows multiple authors and
features a group-based security system.
Changes: This release fixes a problem where a message appears on the
screen saying, "printf... not enough arguments," and then does not allow
the program to submit the data from that screen.
